Syncing photos?

Hi.
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this..
I have an 8gb 4th gen iPod touch (4.2.1) and I have been having some problems syncing photos.
My ipod photo cache folder is about 50mb and I can sync photos as long as I have at least 270mb free capacity space.
Yet when the free space on my ipod goes below 270mb, I get the error +"no photos were copied to the iPod XXX because there is not enough free space on the iPod to hold your photos and photo albums"+. I still have at least 200mb free left and my ipod photo cache is only 50mb, so wouldn't that still fit?
Is this normal? Because I want to use up all the space in my iPod but I also want to sync photos at the same time. 270mb is such a waste to compensate for photos.
I didn't have a problem syncing photos to my old 4th gen ipod nano and could sync the same size of photo cache folder as long as I had the space for it.
Does this happen to anyone too?
Thanks~

Thanks for replying~
But how come I can fill the space up when I "Manually manage music and videos"? I can put in more songs and videos and fill the remaining space while keeping the photos too? Yet when it's automatically syncing, it deletes the photos when I sync more?
Also, when I don't sync any photos at all, I can fill up the entire space in my iPod. Yet only when syncing photos is when the problem occurs.

Coincidentally, my wife just purchased an iPhone 4S and syncs to iTunes on the same computer.

The "best" way to handle it, if you want to keep everything separate, is to create separate user accounts on the computer. make sure you log into your account on the computer before you attempt to sync your phone and log out when you're done using the computer.
Though it's possible to sync both of them to the same iTunes library, and even share an account for the iTunes store, you're inviting confusion and possible data loss (as you've discovered already). Best to just use separate user accounts on the computer. That also gives you the benefit of not polluting the other persons browser favorites, contacts, etc.

• IPod touch 2nd Gen 8gb will no longer Sync photos.

all the posts I could find that were similar had to do with ipods that were jailbroken and on Windows.
I have iTunes 10.1, iPhoto 6.0.6. running on OSX 10.6.5
iPod Touch 2nd Gen 8GB OS 4.2.1
The Problem: Since I got 4.0 and later, I have not been able to sync photos from iphoto. itunes says that it is, the bar moves and says all photos have been synced, all the photos I want synced are checked in itunes and still nothing when I check them on my ipod. iPod says no photos in album. I tried deleting the ipod cache on my mac, nothing. I tried syncing to a single file folder with the same photos, same. I tried exporting all the photos I wanted synced to a separate folder to jpg and smaller resolution, same result, no photos on ipod.
Note. the photos used to sync up until 4.0
I have also tried starting from scratch and putting it back to factory defaults then going from backup. Same result.
I have tried rebooting both iMac and iPod, same thing.
and I hate how I can't just email apple and tell them the problem.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I just can't seem to find anyone else with the same problem.
Thanks in advance for the possible help.

I dont get an error message at all. itunes just does its normal business when syncing and says its synced, but no photos. I have never tried mobile me, so I dont think my problem is connected. I dont have $300 to get a new ipod. this makes me sad.

• Can only sync photos by dropping folder on desktop - iPad won't sync photos

Hi all,
I've been trying for a couple weeks now to sync photos to my iPad.
I'm running SL 10.6.2 and have updated to the latest iTunes. I have one hard drive that runs only my OS and my applications and I have a secondary drive that contains all my data including music, videos, photos, documents etc.
I have been able to repeatedly successfully sync apps, movies, music, and even a pages document to my iPad from the secondary drive through iTunes.
Every single time I have tried to sync photos it just seems to hang at the Sync in Progress screen for hours. I finally have to cancel because it's obvious the sync will not be successful. This happens whether I have one folder selected with just a dozen photos or several folders selected.
I am not using iPhoto. I'm simply choosing the folders with the images I'd like to sync from the Photos tab in iTunes when my iPad is connected.
Today I took one of the folders I was trying to sync containing 12 photos and dropped it on my desktop. The photos synced in seconds and iPad happily said sync complete. Any ideas?
Is this a quirk with SL 10.6.2, iTunes 9.1, or iPad?
It's not necessarily a huge issue that I have to move all the photos I want to sync to my main mac drive... but I just really didn't want to clutter my OS drive with data stuff... I prefer to keep them separate. Seems the only way I can sync photos right now, though, is to move them to the main mac drive... even though everything else syncs just fine from the secondary drive...
Thanks for any help!

• Can't view synced photos on iPhone 5S

The girlfriend recently upgraded her iPhone 4S to the iPhone 5S.
The 4S was running ios7 and all photos in events and albums synced from iPhoto could be viewed.
Since she backed up her new 5S from her 4S back up she can only view a fraction of the photos that were visible on the 4S.
When you go into Settings- General - Usage it says they are all on her phone. Its taking up many Gigabytes of data but when u go into the photo app there are little to no photos in any albums or events.
I have photo stream off and icould turned off in reagrds to anything photo related. Since they are all on my laptop and not on the cloud i didnt not think that has anything to do with the issue at hand.
Nothing on the camera roll has been affected just strictly photos synced from iphoto from my laptop.
Can anyone shine some light on the irritating siutuation???
or is anyone having any problems like this??????

You might try syncing again. Each time you sync Photos via iTunes, the photos on the phone are supposed to be set identical to the current photos in the iTunes settings. I would sync as follows: for the first sync, after you have connected the phone and opened iTunes, go to the Photos tab in iTunes and remove the check mark beside "Synch Photos from" and then do the sync. That should remove all of the previously synced photos from the phone. After verifying that has happened you could then change the iTunes settings to select the desired photos and sync again and see if they sync correctly.

• Problem with some synced photos to my iphone rotating incorrectly

I recently synced a folder of photos in My Pictures to my iPhone 4 via iTunes. 68 picture...21 were taken in a portrait rotation, the rest were landscape. I had no tropuble with the landscape photos. But, after the sync, 5 of the 21 portrait photos had the wrong rotation. From my basic troubleshoot...they are not all rotated incorrectly in the same direction and I confirmed that they all have a similar resolution as at least one of the correctly oriented portrait photos from the same sync. Editing and saving the picture directly on the iPhone is not an option because I am only given the option to save an edited photo to the Camera Roll album. It is extremely frustrating. Why does this process ignore the native orientation of only some of the synced photos? I'd be less confused if it mess up all of the portrait photos. I would very much appreciate any advice to fix this seemingly arbitrary malfunction. Thank you.

I'm having a problem where when I import my iPhone photos into Picasa, photos are rotated incorrectly (even when viewed in Finder). Landscape photos are upside down, portrait photos aren't rotated to portrait orientation. I suspect this has someting to do with the iPhone saving photos without rotating them based on iPhone orientation and instead adding EXIF data to indicate the orientation based on something I read online, but I don't really know. When viewing info for a portrait photo in Preview, it indicates Y resolution is less than X resolution (which is what it should be for landscape photos only), and on the TIFF tab says Orientation 1 (Normal).
So my question is, why is it not being rotated properly in the iPhone for use on other devices? How can I fix this?
It should be noted that important photos with iPhoto or Image Capture makes it display properly in Preview and Finder with updated Orientation information, but still not in Firefox (so... good for some software on your Mac but even still not if you intend to send the picture to anyone... MAJOR BUG ).
BTW using iPhone 4s with latest version of iOS 5.1.1, Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
PS VIdeo orientation is perfect.

• Photos Not Syncing; Photos Missing From Albums, No Error Message, Running iTunes for Windows & iOS 7.1.2

I am having an issue with syncing my photos on my iOS devices running iOS 7.1.2, the two being an iPhone 4s and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G.
When I sync photos, I keep on having photos turn up missing from entire albums. I have tried everything I can to resolve this issue from the support article titled iTunes: Unable to sync photos, and nothing has successfully worked in any kind of permanent form. I have even gone so far as to sync albums individually with a limit of around 400-500 total photos per sync, (give or take), and tried using what very little options I have on the photos tab for my devices in iTunes to essentially trick the devices to sync the missing photos. Despite this, iTunes still fails to sync newly added photos from the source location.
I have even made the attempt of re-installing iOS 7 on both devices, and restoring from backup. Again with no avail.
My best guess for my iPhone is that as it is a 16 GB, not all of 15.6 GB of photos will sync to the device, (go figure), but that doesn't explain why recent photos aren't added OR why my iPad 2 of 64 GB has missing photos.
As of this post, I have an estimated 38,940 files, spread across 1,703 folders, (a large amount of folders being in some of the folders; from my knowledge never being more than two folders in). They are all in one dedicated folder on a hard drive I've dedicated to iTunes and music related files, (for the sake of AVOIDING this kind of nonsense, I might add).
As for the system OS and iTunes, I am running Windows 7 64 bit, and I am using iTunes 11.2.2.3, but will have updated to iTunes 11.3 by the time anyone responds.

I have the exact same problem.
Same kind of photos/videos taken with the same camera randomly sync.
Did 11.3 fix this issue?
Sincerely

• Anyone else having problem with RAID and iTunes syncing photos in Vista?

Hello,
For whatever reason iTunes can not load some of the photos from C drive. It can do it from D drive, though VERY slow. Both C and D are NTFS system, but C is a RAID 0 drive (implemented by hardware on motherboard, Intel 82801G controller). I just wander if this is something related to iTunes not working correctly with RAID drivers, or is it something else? I should say that ALL other programs and games working fine on this drive.
Thanks for the replies.

The problem is with Windows Vista using the NTFS file system, check out this post for the official solution. This has worked perfectly for me everytime I've tried it:

• ITunes has stopped working error message on my Dell Latitude E6520 when trying to sync photos to my iPhone 3GS. Why?!

For some reason, I keep getting the "iTunes has stopped working" error message on my Dell Latitude E6520 when trying to sync photos to my iPhone 3GS. I am using Windows 7 on my 64-bit computer. iTunes will begin to optimize the photos in the folder I have directed it to (I am trying to load almost 3000 photos and videos), and it will go through optimizing all of them singularly, then get to the step where it says "optimizing" again, but does so in bigger groups. It will get to about 2000, and then the error message "iTunes has stopped working" will pop up, and say that "Windows must close the program and will search for a solution, and if it finds one, it will notify me". Why can't I sync these photos, and what can I do? Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it!

Same problem here! Moreover, for some reason, the pictures in my iPhone 3GS somehow have been divided into 2 folders, Photos and Medialibrary. And when I open iPhone as a folder through the explorer I can see only the Photos folder, but cannot see the Medialibrary folder which stores the photos taken before updating/upgrading the iPhone and getting separated folders!!! What the hack with all of this?!!! When I connect iPhone to PC it automatically opens iTunes and starts syncronizing it, but at the process of OPTIMIZING the photos (and according to the number of photos it shows, I see that it tries to syncronize that invisible Medialibrary folder) the process suddenly stops and error message pops out Tried the sync test, tried the button DEBUG in that pop out message, but NOTHING HELPS!!! Also, when I open the Medialibrary in my iPhone, the screen get sblack all through scrolling it down, only the video clips are shown there... >.<
So, could you, apple developers, please, explain WHAT THIS PROBLEM IS ABOUT?!!!!!! FIX IT! I am getting ****** of to spend hours at the computer and reading those lame advises which do not help at all! I have my own things to do except reading your support websites. And I payed for the product ready to use, but not a halfproduct which problems should further be solved somehow by users..

• I have the original ipad. I can't delete my photos from the ipad, and the new itunes update does not give me the option to sync photos. What do I do?

I have the orignal ipad. I synced all my photos from my computer onto. Now I don't have enough storage on my ipad so I want to delete these photos. When I try from my ipad it only gives me the option to share or copy, NOT DELETE. I went to resync my ipad to itunes, after I downloaded the new version and now it doesn't give me an option to sync photos. How do I get rid of them?

Wow. That's weird.
Is your iPad jailbroke? If it is, all bets are off. If it is not jailbroke, keep reading.
First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

• Can 2 Macs sync photos in iPhoto Library?

Hi everyone,
I have 2 Macs (iMac and MacBook both got 10.5.6 and iPhoto 09)
and I'm just wondering if I can sync photos in iPhotos on both Macs.
What I want to do is I just transfer photos from my camera to only one Mac
and then somehow 2 Macs have same photos.
Normally 2 Macs are connected wirelessly night time,
so somehow they can sync iPhoto Library automatically.
Like syncing contacts between iPhone and Mac...
Is there any way? or I'm just lazy...
Thank you,
Hiro

Since I recently purchased an iMac to go along with my MacBook Pro, I am now having this same dilemma. So far, the options seem to be cloud based syncs, local syncs, and local sharing.
Right away, local sharing is out for me since I want both computer to effectively be duplicates of one-another. In other words, I want my transition from working on one computer to the next to be nearly transparent.
For local sync, I am trying out ChronoSync as I have constantly heard it recommended, but there seems to be a major issue. When you open and close an iPhoto library, regardless of whether you change any content, it changes the modification date. Thus, if I were to load new pics on my MacBook, then open my iMac iPhoto and realize they weren't there, then sync (assuming a bi-directional sync setup), I would actually overwrite the MacBook because the package file on the iMac shows as newer. Bam, data lost. These package files Apple loves to use sure look elegant, but are causing problems all over the syncing world. Luckily, if you have Time Machine running, you can at least experiment with all of this with a relative degree of safety. The other nit-picky downside to local sync is that you have to establish a connection between the two computers to sync, meaning they both need to be on, and at least one needs file sharing active, which is a security concern.
The next option seems to be cloud-based sync. Dropbox is popular, but 2GB doesn't come close to my needs and when you start to get into the pay-for service, the capabilities look less impressive. Currently I am trying SugarSync. SugarSync looks like the end-all, be-all of sync/back-up, until you read the known issues. Again, the package files used for things like iPhoto (and other great apps like LicenseKeeper, 1Password, etc) are not supported. I am guessing it is for similar reasons--i.e. no ability to resolve which package is really the newest, regardless of the modification date. As a side-note, I find it a bit irritating that these companies advertise as if all these capabilities work, and worse, charge for a service that is incomplete. What Mac user doesn't want to at least sync iTunes and iPhoto? That's why we buy these softwares, after all. Anyway, I digress.
There is always iDisk too, if you are willing to pay for MobileMe. Thus far I am not really impressed with the performance of iDisk and everything I read suggests that iDisk's performance really takes a dive when working with--you guessed it--package files. Apple's left hand is clearly not talking to their right.
Notably, when setting up my new iMac, I was able to just copy over the whole iTunes and iPhoto library and they work just fine on the new mac. Thus, I think local sync at least has more promise right now (since most cloud-based syncs are based on incremental change for bandwidth purposes).
This all begs the question--with Time Machine's phenomenal success, why not expand that service into a backup/sync capable program. It makes total sense--time machine backs up every few minutes and is accessible via things like AirPort Extreme, or a host of the newer NASs that support TimeMachine. Moreover, TimeMachine supports all of Apples file conventions and is a language any Mac with Leopard forward understands. In other words, it would be great to have a single TimeMachine that worked for both my computers, keeping each one backed up and in sync, without the need to have two instantiations of TimeMachine. I realize this is not perfect, as many people keep different software setups or amounts of data on different computers, but nonetheless, I think that would be a killer upgrade that would move even more people into the Mac arena, or move more people with one Mac to invest in two. But, that's just my 2¢.

• Two iOS devices and a Snow Leopard Mac: trying to sync photos

My wife’s tech support group, that would be me , is failing in attempts to find an easy way to sync her photos between iPhoto on her Snow Leopard Mac and her two iOS 5 devices using iCloud.
The bottom line is how best to manage photos during a time all devices are not on iCloud.
Two problems:
1. She now has the two iOS devices reporting different numbers of pictures and slightly different albums. Shouldn't they be exactly the same?
2. Is it better to have her sync her Snow Leopard Mac to the iOS devices using iTunes or iPhoto.
Any basic tips appreciated. Including if this is not the correct Community for this post.
Thank you.

You are in the correct community for posting this question. Most people would never even think to ask. That's very thoughtful of you. Anyway .... to the point about syncing photos.
I do not use Photo Stream and use iCloud for very little as well. I still sync with iTunes because that works for me and I am used to doing it that way. I am running Lion on my MacBook so I have everything I need for iCloud, but .... This is how I do it.
Connect the iPad to the Mac and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Photos Tab on the right.
Select iPhoto as the folder from which you want to sync.
Click on all of the albums, events, faces, that you want to sync.
Make sure that the Sync Photos heading is checked/selected.
Click on Apply or Sync in the lower right corner of iTunes

• How do I sync photos FROM iphone TO pc using wifi?

I have a 4S I bought in Mar 2012 - just updated to IOS6
PC is a 2011 Dell Inspirion 620 running Windows 7
Browsers are IE & Chrome
I am a computer person so I'm not new to the techno world but this is my first iphone so I'm new to Apple There are plenty of places to get info about syncing photos using icloud or syncing from PC to iPhone but I'm getting conflicting info on syincing FROM iphone TO pc using WIFI. One video I watched told me I needed to download PhotoSync so I did. Then I read that I needed the companion app for Photosync -- Apple.com talks about something called iphoto
I am totally confused can someone please explain to me how to transfer photos FROM my iphone TO my pc using WiFi?
Do I need to download something like photosync? or another type of app.?
Thank you
Christine

So, just to clarify, you're a "computer person" and cannot follow links? Well ok, here goes
Download theiCloud Control Panel.
To enable iCloud on your Windows PC, first set up iCloud on your other devices, then install the iCloud Control Panel for Windows (Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 or Windows 7 required).Download now (you have to follow that link I cannot post the file here).
Turn on iCloud.
From the Windows Start menu, choose iCloud Control Panel.
Enter the Apple ID you used to create your iCloud account and select the iCloud services you’d like to enable.
For mail, contacts, and calendars, you can use iCloud.com or Outlook 2007 or later.
On your iPhone go to settings-iCloud and ensure you're signed in and that "photo stream" is enabled.
Any more questions?

• Unable to sync photos from iPhoto

Got an 8GB iPod Touch yesterday. I can sync everything except my photos from iPhoto. When I go to the Photo tab in iTunes, I place a tick in the check-box that says "Sync photos from:" and then I select iPhoto from the Combo-box. There are 2 radio buttons but only "All photos and albums" is available... "Selected Albums" is greyed out. The box below the radio buttons is also grey and has no entries.
If I try to sync "All photos and albums" I get an error message on my computer that reads: "The iPod [iPod name] cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-50)."
Software updates have all been applied, I have restored my iPod, have verified and fixed file permissions, etc. I have rebuilt the iPhoto library (Command-Option). Both iTunes and iPhoto have been working fine, with no other problems. I am using iLife '08 so I am using iPhoto '08 (version 7.1 (347)).
Has anyone any experience with the problem? I'm thinking that my next step is to reinstall iPhoto/iTunes but I would much rather not have to do that... any suggestions?
Regards,
Bill
P.S. I can sync photos from my desktop, just not from iPhoto '08.
P.P.S. My 5th gen video iPod can sync photos from my iPhoto library!

Hi Damon,
Thanks for the update and the suggestion of trying a new user account... I don't know why that didn't occur to me. Well, you will not be too surprised to hear that with a new user account the photos synced no problem.
That leaves me with an iPhoto library rebuild on my hands. The Apple provided rebuild didn't resolve my issue when I tried it last week. So I will need to do a manual rebuild... something which I have done once before but vowed never to do again as I lost hundreds of hours of work organising and tagging my photos... something which I have invested considerable time in recovering and don't want to lose them again.
With Leopard around the corner, I will be performing a clean install of the new OS on a fresh HDD within the month, so I am going to recreate my iPhoto library that way... rather than invest time now only to see it wasted later.
Thanks once again for the pointers to those Apple docs... most useful.
Kind regards,
William
