Syncing Selected Playlists

I have searched the forums for a while now, I can see many problems like this but cant seem to find a solution whether that means there isn't one or not I do not know but here goes!
Bought myself an 80GB 5G iPod, I have synced most of my albumns on, a few video files and that is it. I have created a few Smart Playlists and have most, of the default Smart Playlists. The problem I am having is in choosing which playlists get synced under the "Music" and "Movies" tabs on the summary page.
When on the "Music" tab its settings, at present, are to:
Sync All Music
All Songs & Playlists
Include Music Videos
Display Albumn Artwork
When on the "Movies" tab its settings are:
Sync Movies
All Movies
When I change these settings to have specific playlists synced under each tab, eg, "Video Playlists One" checked to sync on the "Movie" tab and not on the "Music" tab (and vice versa) and click Apply it says it has synced, after some time and that it is okay to disconnect. I do so, and nothing has changed on the playlists and when I re-connect the iPod it has all changed back to the default settings i listed above. Is there a way to stop it doing this, getting fed up with it now!
Thanks, in advanced for any suggestions/solutions!

I tried the restore button which returned the error "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1418)". After googling this I followed these instructions on the apple website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304508
Completed all steps from 1-5 and tried to restore it again, the same error message ("1418") appears.

  • "Sync" is not working correctly.  selected playlists even when the "Sync selected playlists" was selected and playlists were checked in the music iTunes library.  Do I have a defective iPod touch?

Ever since I bought my ipod touch 4th generation, IOS 4G, 8GB in January 2011, it would not sync selected playlists.
This is even when I have checked 3 things:
    1.  Under Summary/Options, I've checked "Manually manage music and videos" and "sync only checked songs and video."
    2.  When I go to the Music tab and attempt to sync, I have already chosen "selected playlists, artists, albums and genres"
    3.  When I click on "Sync" a window comes up and says "Are you sure you want to sync music?  All existing content on the iPod will be removed and replaced with songs and playlists from your iTunes library."
Do I have a defective ipod?

Sync should be an automatic feature that can be triggered manually. Although, I have a two Shuffles, which are obviously not Touches, so they might be different.
If you have your iPod set to manually manage music, the option to sync only checked songs should not do anything. You have to drag songs manually to the iPod on the sidebar to add music (I've created playlists of only songs I want, then I shift-click the whole thing and drag all of the songs at once to update them, that way I don't have to remember what goes where), and you have to manually select and delete songs from the iPod's 'Music' library on the sidebar to remove them.
As for syncing the files, on my shuffles, they sync individual songs (for Get Info information changes ONLY) automatically every time I plug them into iTunes, and again if I make any changes to the Get Info stuff while they're plugged in. For example, if I added a song to my iPod playlist, it wouldn't sync it, but if I changed the genre of a song that's already on it, it will automatically sync.
       Good luck.

  • Syncing selected playlists set but get more than are checked

Recently changed to syncing selected playlists to make room on iPod as library got too big. Problem is that list of playlists on iPod is different from those that are checked in settings for iPod. More are on iPod than are checked.
I thought it might be because one of my smart playlists uses another as one of the rules but one of the extras is not in any other playlist. Any ideas on what causes this? I opened up 15GB of space on iPod so space is not critical anymore.

Ringtones are currently a one-time only download. Have you not got a copy of them on your computer and/or on a backup ? If not then you can try contacting iTunes support and asking for a re-download, but they are under no obligation to let you you re-download them : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Express Lane, then iTunes > iTunes Store

  • ITunes not syncing selected playlists, choosing songs from all playlists

I have some smaller iPods that I use on random occasions. When I sync them, I choose the following options:
    Sync Music:
    Selected Playlists, artists, genres
    Music Videos - Not Checked
Automatically fill free space with songs - Checked
I have two playlists from which I wish a selection to be made, which exceeds the size of the iPod (they were designed for larger devices synced with this machine). When I attempt to Sync, I get a message saying that the iPod is too small, and would I like iTunes to automatically choose songs to sync. If I click no, the sync is canceled. If I click yes to have a subset of my two playlists automatically choosen, the ipod will sync, but then iTunes clears all of my selected playlists and starts syncing songs from all playlists.
This seems like a bug in iTunes to me, as it is not performing the requested options. Has anyone else experienced this, or know how to get it fixed? Or to get a bug report sent in to Apple? I have been going all over the place on their support page, and since this isn't an issue with the iPod, but with iTunes, I haven't been able to find a support avenue.

iTunes not syncing selected playlists, choosing songs from all playlists
You have it selected to *sync selected playlists* and those playlists are not syncing to the iPod?
however this seems to be very counter-intuitive behavior for iTunes
It can be kind of confusing.
I suggest it's not a bug in that it is acting as it's supposed to.
The option (Fill free space) could be made clearer. Perhaps if they added "with songs at random from the entire library" or somehow added an option to select what the free space will be filled with.)
    1) The fact that iTunes it is not obeying the selected options on the screen
    Not supposed to do that.
If the playlists all fit and there is free space, what would iTunes use to fill the free space if it only used selected items?
    2) iTunes is allowing users construct an unhonorable set of choices out of four options. If "Selected playlists, artists and genres" is not compatible with "Automatically fill free space," then that option should be grayed out.
    It is compatible.
If there is free space after your selections are added, what should iTunes use to fill the free space? It shouldn't fill the free space with stuff already on the iPod.

  • Unable to sync selected playlists

I have a number of playlists that I use as utilities to accomplish sorting. I do not want to display them on my iPod. In previous versions of iTunes, I was able to select the playlists to sync. In 7.1.1 and at least one version prior, this has not worked for me. I have tried to check everything and sync and then go back and uncheck the playlists I want to exclude, but this has not been successful.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks -
    Dudley Warner

I seem to have "solved" my quandary, though I'm not pleased with the reasons. The culprits were video files cross-pollinating my smart playlists. It would seem that if a video is synched to one's iPod, any playlists in which said video appears also get synched to the iPod, even if the playlist is unchecked on the iPod's Music settings page in iTunes.
Alas, it's not as simple as just unchecking "Include music videos" under the list of playlists, because this would not preclude other videos and movies from ending up in a smart playlist if they otherwise met the given criteria. Once I added the criteria "Kind/does not contain/video" and "Kind/does not contain/movie" to the "smart" playlists in question, all videos and movies were filtered out, and the unwanted playlists subsequently disappeared from the iPod.
I hope this sheds some light, Dudley.

  • When I drag a playlist from the list in the sources panel up to my iPod icon, the music is added immediately to my iPod. Are the rules different for this than for 'syncing' selected playlists to the same iPod?

I am trying to put music from two different libraries onto my iPod.  In the first case, I can, but in the second, the program says it will erase all content and sync only the playlists Ihave checked.  What in general is the method for loading an iPod with music from two different libraries?

Yes, if, you manually manage music and videos, iTunes syncs the content immediately. If you deselect “Manually manage music and videos,” the content you added manually is removed from iPod touch the next time iTunes syncs content. To transfer music from multiple computers, your device must be set to "Manually manage music," sometimes referred to as manual mode.
In general, follow these instructions for Using iPad or iPod with multiple computers, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202

  • Sync all songs but select playlists

I am now running iTunes 9 and I can't seem to figure out how to do this. In the old version you could select to sync checked songs and then go to the iPod and select which playlists you wanted. Now it's either all songs and playlists or select playlists. Is there a way to do what I want?

Sync all songs but select playlists.
If you sync all, you don't select playlists.
Now it's either all songs and playlists or select playlists.
And that's how it has always been.
Is there a way to do what I want?
It's exactly the same as it was.
    Select the iPod in iTunes.
    Click the Summary tab.
    Tick *Sync only checked items*.
    Click the Music tab.
Select *Sync music* and select *Selected playlists* then tick the playlists you want.
Note that *Sync only checked items* doe snot mnena you cannot sync selected playlists or everything. It simply means if you have items unchecked and they are included in any playlists, they will not sync.

  • Songs Can't be Synced Because Playlists No Longer Exist?

Color me kind of stupid, but could you tell me why all music has disappeared from my Nano (second) and iTunes tells me, after I've connected, "Songs on the iPod "My Name's iPod" cannot be synced because all the playlists selected for synching no longer exist." What did I do? How do I fix it? My more than 1,000 songs remain listed in iTunes, and I am able to get my little Shuffle going just fine, but the Nano is empty. Please help! Thanks so much!

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • HT4235 Having trouble syncing itunes playlist to ipod

I am having trouble syncing my itunes playlist to the ipod touch. When I connect the ipod to the computer and open itunes, the ipod shows that it is in the sync process. After connecting your iPod touch to the computer, choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have see the options to sync "Entire music library" and sync "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres". If the latter is selected, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. It may be that the specific playlist you are referring to is not checked.

  • Manually manage music but auto-sync one playlist?

Ok so basically, I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to manually manage my itunes library but automatcially sync one of my playlists.  The reason being is that I have on artists that constantly changes (assorted singles) which is just a collection of different artists' singles.  It would be nice to have itunes automatically sync that one playlist but allow me to maintain control of the rest of the library.
Otherwise, my only way to get around this is to create a folder that contains playlists for all the albums/artists I want to sync and have itunes autmotically sync everything that folder?????

It would be nice to have itunes automatically sync that one playlist but allow me to maintain control of the rest of the library.
    Simple.
Uncheck Manually manage music and videos.
    Select the Music tab.
Tick Sync music and Sync selected playlists.
    Tick the playlist you want.
Drag the other music you want to the iDevice.

Have you tried choosing "never register" next time you are asked. Never register shows up after the second or third time you connect if you have chosen "Register Later" previously.

  • Is there anyway I can sync a playlist without having to sync all my songs?

I just want to add the recently added smart playlist to my iPhone but I do not want to have to sync all my songs because I have not had good luck with doing that.

    Hey booo55,
Great question. You can choose to sync selected playlists to your iPhone instead of the entire music library. For more information on doing so, check out this resource:

  • Sync Selected Songs - Multiple Users

    Hi Guys,
We have three Ipods (2 Nanos, and a Shuffle) that sync to our library. All are set to sync only selected songs.
Every time one user selects their songs, and syncs, the next user will see the same selections for the previous user. Basically, each user's selections are saved globally, rather than for each Ipod.
Is there a way to save the selection lists independantly for each user? This way, each person will not override the other, and have to reset their selection list each time.
    Thanks in advance,
    John

Are you syncing by checking and unchecking songs? Using unchecking to manage an iPod is an option (and works fine when you are working with a small number of specialised tracks such as Christmas songs that you want to keep off the iPod during the year for example) but only if you can live with the other things unchecking does:
Unchecking is not selective, an item is either checked or it's not so it affects all the playlists an item might appear in.
Unchecked songs will be skipped when playing songs from the library or a selection. They will only play when individually clicked on.
Smart Playlists have an option that unchecked songs won't appear.
Unchecked songs will not be burned to CD.
Genius and iTunesDJ will not use the songs that are unchecked.
Basically unchecking is a way of telling iTunes to ignore the item and exclude it from other automatic features.
Another method you can use to auto-sync your iPods with iTunes is "Sync Music - Selected Playlists". Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". This is particularly useful when your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod. When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync".
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update each iPod from, call them -iPod1, -iPod2, -iPod3 for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). Drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. Now connect the first iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you made for this iPod from the selection and click Apply. Repeat the process for each of the other iPods in turn.: Syncing Music to iPod
