Syncing & Streaming

I just got a TV because I have a large library of music (400 to 600 GB of Apple Lossless) plus a bunch of movies. I got the 160 because of the movies and I was told that I can stream and sync from the same computer. Is this true? If so, how?
Thanks
Ryan

it's not a problem with Leopard because i am on Leopard 10.5.1 (worked using 10.5 also) and it works flawlessly for me... do you have the latest firmware for your airport?
it really sounds to me like you may have intermittent problems with your wireless network i.e. the AppleTV wireless connection to your router is down, and this is why the iTunes Library is grayed out i.e. the AppleTV can't see your router and as a result can't see your iTunes Library. the syncing and streaming should really have nothing to do with one another... and like i said this works fine for me under Leopard.
you need to keep the iTunes library sync'd or else it will erase everything on the AppleTV hard drive... that's why, when you turn syncing off you no longer see your photos, because they've been erased from the AppleTV.
what has always worked for me whenever AppleTV can't see my iTunes (it's grayed out on the AppleTV menu under Sources) is, i just unplug the AppleTV power cord for 30 sec's plug it back in and everything works fine and the iTunes Library in un-grayed.. i.e. the wireless connection is re-established and back up.

  • The Bourne Legacy won't sync/stream on AppleTV 1st Gen.

    Hello, Everyone.
I recently just purchased "The Bourne Legacy" from iTunes Store. This is the first time I purchased movie and I did it with my computer, through iTunes (10.7 (21). When the download was done, I could watch the movie in my iMac through iTunes but I just couldn't find a way to sync/stream the movie to my AppleTV 1st Generation.
    What I've tried:
    - Selected my AppleTV (under "Devices") - clicked "Movies" tab - unchecked all movies - checked only "The Bourne Legacy" - sync. No result, it wouldn't sync.
    - Restored factory setting of my AppleTV - set my AppleTV to pair with iTunes - all my movies are there EXCEPT the purchased movie. I wouldn't stream.
Could please anyone help me? Any tip/suggestion would be much appreciated. I want to see this movie in my tv. Thanks.
    R.E. Hartanto

It was purchased on iTunes and there is a lot of space on ATV. I using less than 25 of the space. Not sure if I can download from iTunes to Apple TV.

  • Syncing & Streaming from the same Library? - Noob question

Good Evening - I have a silly noob question that I can't believe I can't find the answer to on my own: I have been trying to determine if it is possible to sync and stream from the same library simultaneously.
I purchased the 40GB aTV and it has been syncing just fine with my Windows iTunes. I told it not to sync a few albums I never listen to so I wouldn't have issues with other songs or movies. I am upgrading to a new iMac and I am am going to re-rip many of my existing CD's to get them into a consistent audio quality of 192 AAC or above. This is going to push my library size to well over the 40GB limit in just music, not including any movies or TV shows I choose to pull in.
The manual does not make it obvious (or I am not reading clearly) what happens to items that don't sync over - I assume they are still playable but will have to stream. Is there anyway to mark "preferred" albums or artists that should get synced and not streamed in case the iTunes library is unavailable for whatever reason?
Also, when I change libraries is the aTV going to completely re-sync even though the music is must going to be migrated?
Thanks for taking the time to answer these silly questions.

That's not quite what I was looking for.
My question remains, what happens to the items that can't be synced from my main library to my aTV? My library is just a smidge bigger than the available space on the aTV and not everything syncs over. Does that mean I won't be able to play those items not synced from my main library...
As my library grows I don't want to have to choose what does and doesn't get synced from my library by mood. For example, every year my wife buys new christmas music - right now I could exclude it and everything else gets copied over, but come thanksgiving that stuff better be there for her and I don't want to choose other music or movies to remove.
I guess I will just have to play to try it out.

  • Understanding Syncing/Streaming/Combo of 2.0 - HELP!

    Hi all,
An 40 GB AppleTV upgraded to 2.0. All library items are coming from my iMac. After upgrading on the day of the release of 2.0 I was able to seamlessly access all of my iMac content - even though some were synced and other were obviously streamed. (like my 85 movies were obviously NOT synced)
Had a Power Failure today and then my iMac library was grayed out on the ATV and the ATV was missing from my iTunes. After MANY attempts to get them to see each other, I reset the whole works and now I am not back to my original easy config. When selecting the sync option setting up ATV, a lot of my iTunes content is simply missing on ATV. If I decide to stream instead, then I have to use the Sahred Library selection in ATv instead of the various My Library entries.
What happened here? Am I missing a setting? Is it not true that the ATV should sync and then stream the un-synced items?
    Help!!!
    Stu

Meme - no, that box was not selected.
    Winston - only one library.
I have now fixed this by doing a factory restore, upgrading to 2.0 and then setting up the iMac library once again. Now, it all works as it did before.
For the life of me, I am not sure why this was not easier. Even though my iMac library was grayed out after the power failure, the Apple TV seemed to offer me the option of selecting it, removing it from the ATV and then re-selecting it for syncing. However, after reselecting, typing the code in iTunes and letting it sync (40 minutes), the entry on ATV was STILL grayed out and my items were still not streaming - only the synced content would appear.
I'd like to say this "solved the problem", but I really don't feel this is a viable solution.
Thanks to you for your help! Much appreciated.

  • WiFi syncing / Streaming Audio

I will be getting a Touch soon, and want to get some things figured out beforehand.
WiFi Syncing. I have a non-Apple (2Wire) 802.11g server for my laptops, also wired (ethernet) to my desktop (older iMac, 10.5.X). Desktop has no Airport card.
If I want to sync to iTunes on my iMac, I assume I need to use the cable, and can't do it wirelessly through the router. I assume that installing an Airport card into the iMac would allow WiFi syncing.
Second - Streaming Audio. I listen to several radio stations that offer streaming audio - Windows Media, MP3 (.pls, .m3u). It's not clear if the Touch supports this, or if there is some clever work-around. I'd love to use the Touch as a wireless streaming-audio device. Suggestions?
    Thanks!

WiFi syncing is not a feature of the iPod touch at all, you cannot do it.
You can ONLY sync with iTunes via a cable.
If the streaming radio station uses Quicktime then you can listen to it on the iPod touch, if not then you can't.

  • Syncing/Streaming Photo's from iPhoto

    Good evening
I'm attempting to sync my iPhoto library with my Atv and it says that I have insufficient space to sync the photo's. Elsewhere in support I came across a note that effectively said if your Atv is full of movies and tv episodes the photo library won't sync.
so, my question, and this is based upon my current level of knowledge of the Atv is; I thought once the Atv was full, it would go from syncing to streaming, regardless of the media? I have only just begun ripping my DVD library and it has more than 1.5TB of content. I assume once the Atv is full it will just stream the content. That being the case, why can it not do the same for photos'?

Thanks Winston, you are correct "sync". In fact I found the answer in a slightly different way. There is a check-box in the photo's tab that provides for syncing photo's before any media. Therefore this will in fact create the necessary space on the ATV for the photo's by moving other media content from syncing to streaming.
Of course the alternative, as you point out is to limit what actually gets synced in custom sync.
Thanks for taking the time to respond.

  • Clueless on syncing/streaming

After thinking I understood this, I am now aware I am clueless. First of all, my current set up.
I have TV shows (seasons of 24, as an example) on my AppleTV that I have purchased. At other times I have made those purchases from the Apple Store via my computer (the one connected to AppleTV). But, not everything shows available on the AppleTV. As an example, season one of Deadwood shows up on the AppleTV whereas I have seasons one and two on the iTunes library. Similarly, all seasons of 24 show up on the AppleTV but only seasons one and five show up on my iTunes.
And to complicate things more, at one time I had much of my music on the AppleTV.
I would like to get this all reorganized and free up space on the AppleTV, so:
    1) How do I get the music off of the AppleTV?
    2) How do I get everything purchased, either via AppleTV or iTunes into my iTunes library?
    3) I have episodes showing up on my AppleTV with a little blue ball next to them. When I select to view, the streaming display comes up, but nothing happens. This just recently occurred while I've been dinking with the sync options. Any idea what I screwed up here?
    4) Is there a simple method to remove items (such as those you've already watched and have already saved on the iTunes library) off of your AppleTV to free up space?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    1) How do I get the music off of the AppleTV?
Choose the manual sync option and you can pick & choose what gets copied over.
    2) How do I get everything purchased, either via AppleTV or iTunes into my iTunes library?
If you look on the sidebar of iTunes, there is a Purchased, uh, category or selection or list or whatever you want to call it. Click on it and see if what is in that list matches what the AppleTV can see. You can start dragging more content into Purchased and that should make it available.
    3) I have episodes showing up on my AppleTV with a little blue ball next to them. When I select to view, the streaming display comes up, but nothing happens. This just recently occurred while I've been dinking with the sync options. Any idea what I screwed up here?
No idea - the little blue ball just indicates that it's a new TV episode that you have not accessed yet. See my previous suggestion.
    4) Is there a simple method to remove items (such as those you've already watched and have already saved on the iTunes library) off of your AppleTV to free up space?
Again, you can hard-sync your picks. But, I think there's an option to sync all unwatched TV episodes and movies if I'm not mistaken. You can check that out and see if it works for you.
You'll always be able to stream stuff as long as you're connected to iTunes. I personally don't bother syncing anything, I just let it auto-sync whatever it wants (it has a preference for Battlestar Galactica it seems) and stream whatever I need.

  • ATV Syncing & Streaming Together?

After Syncing photos from iPhoto, I choose to stream my music from iTunes, but can't play a slideshow with music. How can I combine synched photos with streamed music?
As an aside, I solved my last post. I thought the photos were synched, but they were only streaming (with music from streaming iTunes)!

To play music with synced photos you need to sync the music you want to play with the slideshows.
However if you've synced your photos, you are also streaming them, if you change libraries from 'tv' to 'my itunes library' and watch a slideshow (by streaming), from there you can play any of the music that you stream.

  • Syncing, streaming and reaching my atv limit of hd space

    Hi,
I am using my atv with Netopia router, no ethernet connection, hanging off latest itunes version running on XP laptop.
Very pleased with the solution for my music needs but now I have reached the capacity of my atv hd space. I want to continue to build up my itunes library but when I sync, ~72 songs have not been passed to the atv due to lack of space.
The problem is that when I look for the songs via the atv with my laptop/itunes on, the songs do not appear to be available. When I look for them on my laptop they are there and I can listen to them.
Assuming that my synced library will also stream I thought that those songs that did not get passed to the atv hd would be streamed, and I can continue to build up my music library.
Is this assumption correct and if so what diagnostics & approach should I apply to correct the situation.
If not what strategy should I adopt to enable me to continue to build my itunes music library beyond the limits of my atv hd.
Finally is there anywhere I can find out the criteria itunes/atv uses to determine what goes to the hd of the atv and what does not?.
    Thanks
    P

    Hi Winston C
I have gone to the atv selected source and got the
    pass number for the stream.
When I return to the laptop all I see is the normal
Apple TV device and no option to set up the stream.
I am using the my itunes libray as the source.
    P
Issue corrected by changing the name of my master itunes library, as the old library name on my laptop was the same as an ipod device that I normally do not use.
So changed the name and now works fine. Now I can proceed with building my itunes library which exceeds the hd limit on the atv and now it is transparent to me what tunes are on my atv and what is streamed.
    Thanks

  • Can't sync/stream 1080 TV shows to iPhone4S

I've bought a couple of TV Shows from the istore at 1080p resolution. I've been trying to get it to sync to my iphone4s and even streaming it and it won't work. I've read up on other articles and apparently this won't work?
Please can some clarify this for me as the "Tech_Specs" according to apple states that the iPhone 4S can play video up to 1080p???
As far as I'm concerned it bought from apple istore so it should meet all the requirements...
Please help, really don't feel like downloading all these episodes in 720p...

Currently 1080p content, from the iTunes store, is compatible with iPad (3rd generation), Apple TV (3rd generation), and a Mac or PC, only:

  • ITunes 8.1, AppleTV 2.3.1 -- aTV remains in Devices list, won't sync/stream

Hey all.. Sorry to post yet another topic that looks like everything else, but as I browsed all of the other issues that you were having with your aTV's, SOME or PART of the problem that you explained fit my situation but the solutions you found were unavailable to me. Namely, anything having to do with having an AirPort. Any help that you can give would be greatly appreciated.
    *My problem:*
I have the smaller aTV so I really only use it to stream movies/music from the computer into the living room. The other day, I added a couple of movies to my iTunes library expecting to be able to go watch them today. When I sat down and tried to find the movies, I realized that several movies that I've recently added didn't appear on the aTV, though I was able to find/watch them on the computer. I don't know when the aTV stopped seeing additions to my iTunes library (it seems to be right about the time that I "upgraded" iTunes) but none of my recent additions appeared.
Long story short, a couple factory resets and firmware upgrades later, the aTV appears in my Devices list (it never disappears). When I attempt to Sync it, the progress bar appears in the window at the top of iTunes briefly 3-5 seconds, and then it stops. Going out to the aTV (or even looking at the list of content in the iTunes sidebar) shows NOTHING on the aTV. I've deleted/removed the link and re-added it several times to no avail. Here's the rub: When I set the computer up as a Guest library (not the Sync library), I'm able to see everything (i.e. even the new stuff) in my iTunes list.
    *The Setup:*
    Computer: iMac OS X 10.5.6
    aTV: running version 2.3.1
Router: It's a Netgear, not an AirPort

    Update:
This doesn't make any sense... I tried a couple of new things: I tried syncing the Apple TV with my MacBook Pro -- It worked just fine. So, while it was doing that, I got the idea to completely remove iTunes from the iMac and re-installing it.
After the re-install, I re-imported all of my content (movies/TV shows/music, rebuilt my iTunes library), and the iMac and Apple TV STILL wouldn't get along. When I deleted my movies from the iTunes library, the iMac would sync TV shows and music perfectly, as advertised. ***?

  • Another Apple TV syncing/streaming fix

I've tried every fix in these forums during the past 5 months, and none of them worked. I have been having the same problems that other people have -- Apple TV disappearing in iTunes, sync errors, and streaming only working for a few minutes after a restart. Here is my set up...
    iMac (wifi)
    Macbook Pro (wifi)
    Powerbook (wifi)
    Apple TV (wifi)
    Airport Extreme (b/g)
Here is what I did to fix the problem...
    1. Changed my wifi channel number (I changed mine from 1 to 8)
    2. Check whether you have multicasting turned on in your router. I heard Apple TV uses this to maintain connections with other computers on the network. I ensured mine was on and raised my setting from 2 to 5.5.
Everything has been working perfectly for 2 days! I can even click "Sync" in iTunes and it works! That has NEVER worked before.
As with the rest of the posts here, you may not find success with this one. I just wanted to throw my story into the mix with the hope that it can help a few others.

awesome! glad to hear you were able to find a remedy.
unfortunately the only multicast filtering my Linksys WRT54G-L does is filtering multicasts from the Internet port which is on a completely different subnet than the local net.
my problem may actually be more of a bug than a setting. last night while plugging and unplugging my ethernet cable the darned thing started working again. i tried to reproduce the results to no avail.
works fine if i go back to 2.0.
glad yours works though. there is hope!

  • Streaming Content and Adding/Syncing Content

Is it possible to add or sync movies/tv shows to apple tv but also have the option of streaming content?
I just finished setting up my apple tv. I had to enter a 5 digit passcode into my itunes and this allowed me to sync or manually add content to my apple tv. But, I also wanted to be able to stream content since I have about a TB's worth of music and movies/tv shows. So, I went back to the apple tv and had to enter another 5 digit passcode (this one allows me to stream). But now, I can't add files directly onto my apple tv. Can anyone help?

    Yes

You can - the library set up to sync will automatically allow compatible content not synced and not deseleceted in main itunes media lists to stream - say you sync 20 movies, but have another 80 unsynced, then when itunes is running you'll see a combined list of 100 movies not 20. Turn itunes off and only 20 appear under My Movies as they can't stream unless it's running.

You basically sound as though you changed it to a streaming library whcih can't sync.
Your're allowed one sync/stream library (primary/main whatever you want to call it), but can also connect to separate stream only libraries (streaming/secondary).
Sync library stuff appears under My whatever, streaming only under My Shared whatever entries.

  • How many computers can sync with Apple TV at the same time?

I'm thinking of buying one of these things for my parents as a last-minute Christmas gift. They both have their own iMac, with their own choice of music/movies/photos/etc. If I get them this device and set it up in their living room, could they stream content from both computers to this?

    Eric wrote:
When you say "online" you mean bonjour, right?
So all I'd have to do for set up, is turn on the "share library" in their iTunes? Alright, sounds easy enough.
No, AppleTV's are set up in a specific manner.
You can sync with 1 iTunes library, and stream from several.
Synced material is seen under My Music, My Movies categories of the respective media types (Music/Movies/TV Shows/Podcasts), and if iTunes is running any compatible material that hasn't synced (copied to AppleTV in order to play if computer is off) can be streamed as needed.
Streaming libraries that don't sync are selected under a My Shared Music/Movies etc category, and stream as needed, but only one is selected at a time.
To set up a library to sync/stream, AppleTV announces itself across the network to itunes, and a 5 digit code appears on the connected TV which is then entered in iTunes on the machine which is being added to 'computers'. Quite simple really.

  • Apple TV - sync with external storage?

I bought an Apple TV about 2 weeks and have been pretty happy with it. I have lots of TV shows saved on an external drive so as not to completely fill up my iMac. The external drive is connected to my iMac at all times.
Is there a way that I can sync Apple TV to this external storage device? Or watch TV shows from the external hard drive without moving them back to the iMac and then syncing with the Apple TV? Or is there a way I can leave TV shows on the Apple TV without also copying them to my iMac? My Apple TV is 160gb so there must be a way of using that memory without jamming up my iMac.
I've looked in the manual but haven't found an answer to this situation.
Thanks for any ideas or assistance.

Next thing to appreciate is how iTunes stores files.
The iTunes library, usually called iTunes, contains various sub-folders and files.
Some of these files contain the library database, artwork etc.
There'll be an iTunes Music folder which contains the media copied into iTunes on import.
There may be old library database backups, and a folder for iPhone apps if you have one.
There may be other folders for other sorts of user.
Is there a way that I can sync Apple TV to this external storage device?
Not without the files being known to iTunes - all communication with AppleTV in terms of local network file transfers works through iTunes.
Or watch TV shows from the external hard drive without moving them back to the iMac and then syncing with the Apple TV?
    Yes, this is possible.
When you import a CD it will automatically store in the iTunes Music folder. You can see where file are by selecting Show in Finder after a right click on the entry in iTunes.
If you import a file from somewhere other than CD however there is a Preference under Advanced>General Tab which decides if a copy is placed in the iTunes Music folder or not. If you deselect the copy option iTunes simply stores a reference to the file not the file itself.
So, if you deselect copy you could just drag the files from the external drive onto an iTunes window and they'll be available for syncing/streaming but still live on the external drive.
This is probably your simplest option. There is a keyboard shortcut which from memory is the option key which will temporarily not copy an added file when dragged to iTunes.
Or is there a way I can leave TV shows on the Apple TV without also copying them to my iMac?
Using the do not copy option in iTunes will achieve this with files on the external drive not on the iMac.
There is no manual drag and drop type way of filling AppleTV with media which is a shame if you don't have the external drive.
You can in fact delete the file in the itunes Music folder manually from Finder and this will not remove them from the database - iTunes will complain if you try to play them or stream them but if synced to AppleTv you can play them from there. I do not recommend this approach, and you must not delete the file entry from iTunes or it will then also delete from AppleTV.
My Apple TV is 160gb so there must be a way of using that memory without jamming up my iMac.
The 160GB is mainly indtended to allow you to have more stuff on AppleTV so that youd odn't need itunes running all the time, or perhaps ifyour network doesn't allow smooth steaming.
It is not a backup and must not be regarded as external storage - many people assume it's storage and then lose their files when their computer's hard drive or external fails if they have no backup. Sorry to repeat this but it's important.
I've looked in the manual but haven't found an answer to this situation.
It's not particularly detailed is it.
    Hope that helps.
There are some other options to consider too.
