  • Sync between Classic iPod and iTunes (10.5.3)

I do hope someone may be able to help me to sort out a mess I've got myself into concerning the transfer of music from iTunes to iPod, and back again. I don't know how it happened, but every attempt I try to untangle things, it only seems to make the problem worse.
    Here's what's happening:
    1. I have an older list of playlists on my iPod, which I want to update heavily (with the replacement tunes coming from my iTunes playlists);
    2. at the same time, the up to date set of playlists on my iTunes I want to transfer to my iPod;
    3. unfortunately, one playlist (though still in iPod), has completely disappeared from the iTunes. A complete mystery.
    4. the Devices tab down the left hand side seems to come and go at will, depending on whether the iPod and computer are connected via a USB. Is that normal?
So, could I receive the help and advice of Forum members to:
    1. transfer songs from the iTunes playlists to my iPod music playlists;
    2. get rid of the older playlists currently on my iPod - with the exception of one playlist (see point. 3 above); and
    3. advise about the ever-disappearing Devices tab!
I look forward very much to receiving the help from any Forum members. I should add that my computer skills are pretty much in the 0-5 bracket, so replies in simple English would be much preferred. Thank you.

    (b) However, there are quite a number of music categories which I don't really want. i.e. Cover Flow, Artists, Albums, Compilations, ?Songs, Genres, Composers. Grateful advice whether I really should keep these lists: I can't see the need for them, though.
    (c) In addition, I wonder if you think I need to retain another category of tools in my iPod: i.e. Videos, Photos, Podcasts. What do you think?
I don't believe those can be removed as they are built in to the iPod's software unforunately.
    2. iTunes:
    (a) By some means unknown to me, my iTunes pages seem to have sorted themselves out roughly. In other words, I have a coherent single Playlist which lists in order some 11 separate catergories of music, as well as the odd "iTunes DJ", whatever that does!
I'm a litte lost on this one.  You should be able to view all of your music stored in iTunes by clicking on the Music category at the very top under Library in the left hand pane of iTunes.  It sounds like you are referring to the playlists section in the left hand pane of iTunes.  ???
I guess the other point to mention belatedly is that my name, under "Devices", only appears after I conect the iPod to the computer's USB. We live and learn!
That's how it is intended to work. Your iPod will only be listed in iTunes when you have it physically connected to a USB port on your PC.  This allows iTunes to communicate with the iPod.  You can not edit sync settings for the iPod when it is not physically plugged in and appearing in iTunes.
Hope this clarifies at least a few of your questions!

    Hi Dennis!
I have a couple of steps for you to try in order to get those songs transferred to your iPod touch. First, make sure all of your software is updated with the latest versions. If the songs were downloaded from iTunes, you will also want to delete the songs from your library and then download them again from the list of past purchases on your iTunes account. An article about doing that can be found here:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If you try a sync after those two steps and are still seeing the issue, then I would like you to try syncing the iPod by setting it to manually manage. An article outlining more information on manually managing your iPod sync can be found here:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
If you are still having issues after that, I have another article that can outline some other reasons why your songs may not transfer to your iPod, and it can be found here:
Some songs in iTunes won't copy to iPod

My iPod touch is not charging, nor is it syncing with my commputer and iTunes. It will charge on the wall charger, and in the car, but not on the computer. My wife's iPod Nano syncs on the computer. I went in and reset my iPod Touch back to factory settings and now it will not let me get in unless I sync to iTunes on my computer. Well, it still will not connect thru the USB cord. Does anyone know what I should do to get this corrected? I want my iPod back.

Have you seen and worked through the suggestions in this Apple support document?

I just purchased a 120gb iPod classic 6th generation from a friend. I have the latest iTunes installed and the software on the iPod is also current. My problem is whenever I'm syncing the iPod and iTunes freezes between the 250- 300th song... I have to manually reset the iPod for the iTunes to run correctly, but then my music isn't added and iTunes tells me I have to restore the iPod... I've done this numerous times only to no avail... Someone please help!!!

  • Syncing iPad to iPod from iTunes on external hard drive

I had all my music stored on my laptop but was running out of space so I transferred it all to an external hard drive. That's when everything went pear shaped! Tried to sync it all but messed it up. Now I have all songs on iPad, but it won't sync new stuff to iPod plus there is only new songs ( recently purchased ) on iTunes. Would love to know how to sync up iPad to iPod and iTunes so it all matches. Have tried the iTunes info icon but still can't get it to sync. Has anybody had problems with external hard drives when it comes to syncing iTunes?
    Thanks in advance
    Penny

If your library is full of broken links then try fixing them with my FindTracks script, otherwise see this post by forum regular Zevoneer for options on transferring files from the iPad to your computer.
Alternatively, if your iTunes database is missing files that should be in it then perhaps there is a previous iTunes library file kicking around your internal drive somewhere that could be restored and reconnected to your media.  It all depends on exactly what you did to start with. Switching to a new database tends to get things confused as iTunes will want to wipe the device and start over.

  • Ipod and itunes woes

"Attempting to copy to the disk 'ipod' failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
iTunes 7 on my G5 keeps giving me this error message when I transfer music to my ipod. However, if I remain persistent and continually drag and drop the perceived "trouble song" the ipod eventually accepts it. I never have had this problem before iTunes 7 and my ipod is a 30gig photo ipod. It's really frustrating since I'm trying to move 70 songs over and I have to do it one-by-one. iTunes tells me that the iPod is up-to-date. any suggestions?

i had the exact problem as you. have you tried using a different usb port? these were the steps i took:
    1) reset iPod.
    2) restore iPod on my laptop iTunes (because it wasn't working on my g5).
    3) then i kept trying to sync the iPod with iTunes on my g5 (because that was where my main music library was), but i kept getting the message: "The disk could not be read from or written to." i was using the usb port at the front of the g5.
    4) then i tried a different usb port. the first one i tried was on a usb hub. i manually added a few songs to the iPod. IT WORKED! then i switched to another usb port on the back of the g5. IT WORKED there, too!
    5) so i sync'ed the iPod to iTunes on the g5. a few times during the sync, i would receive that same message: "The disk could not be read from or written to."
    6) so i would safely eject the iPod, then reconnect, and re-sync all over again until the iPod was completely updated. a little bit of a pain, but at least my iPod is functioning again (after being dead for a couple of weeks.)
    hope this helps.

  • I can no longer properly sync info from iPod to iTunes.  Did iTunes change?

I have always been able to sync my iPod to iTunes.  It updated number of plays, date last played, ratings, etc. from the iPod to iTunes.
I can no longer do this.  I was on the phone with Apple Support for over an hour...kept getting put on hold while the technician searched for answers...and finally a "senior advisor" told me that it's impossible for information like this to be transferred from the iPod to iTunes.  They're on "different" counting systems.  This is amazing to me, because it's worked beautifully for years, but now this won't work.  Information will transfer from iTunes to iPod, but not from iPod to iTunes.
    I don't understand what happened.

The "expert" is wrong, partially.  You must be using automatic syncing in order for iTunes to keep the "supporting data" (such as ratings and playcount) in sync.  With automatic syncing, it is iTunes's  "job" to keep the iTunes library on the computer "in sync" with the library on the iPod.  You tell iTunes to replicate either the entire iTunes library on the iPod (if it will fit) or a defined subset of the iTunes library on iPod, and iTunes keeps all data for that media content in sync between iTunes library and iPod.
However, if you use the manual method to load content (drag and drop items on the iPod in iTunes), with the Manually manage music (and videos) setting on the iPod's Summary screen, THEN the iTunes library on the Mac is separate from the library on the iPod.  iTunes just loads the media files on the iPod and then "forgets" about it.  You can delete songs on the computer, and they stay on the iPod because iTunes doesn't care.  In this case, iTunes also does not care about the supporting data, so things like ratings and playcount are not synced back to the Mac.  Afterall, that song on the iPod may not even exist in the iTunes library anymore.  It's possible that NONE of the song on the iPod are in the computer's iTunes library.

I sync'ed my iPod and lost my playlists on the iPod and Genius appears.  How do I get the playlists back on my iPod?

All you can do is restore from backup if yu have one. If you backed up to iTunes make sure that autosyncing is turned off. Otherwise when you connect the iPod to the computer the backup with you data might be overwritten. To turn off go to iTunes>Preferences>Devicesand check the box that says "Prevent iPods...".

I had the Ipod and ITunes syncing up correcting under my old laptop under Windows XP Professional. I got a new laptop with Windows XP Professional. I copied all the songs from the old to the new laptops and syncing was ok. The new laptop developed a problem, and I got a new replacement. I copied all the songs to the second new laptop and tried to sync up the laptop. Songs play okay in itunes, but the Ipod was wiped clean. Any ideas? I would hate to go back to reload CD's from my collection. Thanks.

my older iPod my husband wants to use and his netbook does not have cd drive. How do I down load iPod and iTunes info for this product so he can now use it?

Your question(s) is/are a little hard to understand.  So your husband has an iPod as well as a netbook and he wants to be able to sync iPod with this netbook is that correct?  If so, he'll need to first download and install iTunes assuming the netbook is running some version of Windows such as 7, Vista, or XP.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
As for importing or ripping music, he'll have to either use an external CD/DVD drive that is attached via USB or rip the songs to another PC you have with a built in CD/DVD drive.  Once you have imported them to the other computer, you can transfer the songs to an external hard drive or to his iTunes library via Home Sharing.

  • Why there isnt direct cable or Bluetooth sync link between iPod and iPhone?

I own both the iPod and the iPhone, both linked to iTunes. It is only possible to sync between the iPod to iTunes or between the iPhone to iTunes.
Why there is no possibility to directly link and sync between the iPod and iPhone ?
I will explain why this is bothering me so much. While on vacation I bought some songs from iTunes directly from my iPhone.
When i needed these songs on my iPod, it was inpossible, becouse my PC was left at home.
Because of this I am wondering don't you think irrational the impossibility to have a direct link and sync between the iPod and iPhone via white cable or via Bluetooth connections meant only for the link sync with PC ?
I mean even Nintendo DS and SONY PSP have this kind of sync links.
Message was edited by: Arkam Knight

Rationally this means that if I can download the same things on both my devices
form the same PC based iTunes software, there must be some way to link the
same both devices directly by cable or radio frequency.
Sorry, but I do not see the logic here at all. The statement simply means iTunes can connect with multiple devices. It does not say iPods (or iPhones) can connect with each other at all. It simply doesn't work that way. I can pull a trailer with my car. You can pull a trailer with your car. Therefore my trailer should be able to pull your trailer? I don't think so.
