Syncing three machines in different locations.

Sorry to post this in BOTH Leopard AND Time Machine, but I'm not sure what the required expertise would be, so apologies.
I have an iMac at home using Airport 24/7 broadband. and a 400gb exterior hard drive (which I currently use with Time Machine)
Exactly the same at work on a LAN
A MacBookPro for when I travel.
and I'm buying a small macbook for my secretary and a time capsule to replace airport (so I can put airport in my office at work)
Everything runs Leopard.
How can I ensure that every machine has exactly the same files and information on everyday. I can use Chronosync if my laptop and imac are in the same room, or Timbuktoo over the net, but thats sort of retroactive after I have found out I forgot to sync or worked on the file on a different mac. Is their an automatic way using .mac or the like to sync all the machines at once automatically or manually.
Thanks in advance for your efforts on this site.
Brett

I would go for a simple shell script using the built-in rsync tool. Ask in the Unix forum for help setting it up.

  • Sync config b/w different location stand alone firewalls

i am looking for a solution as I have two ASA firewalls at different locations and both are single routed mode firewwalls. One is sitting just in case the main site fails it will use as the backup internet point for whole network. But I need to find a solution so that changes made to the main HQ firewall will reflect automatically on the 2nd DR node.
Looking forward for your suggestions ans thoughts.
    Thanks,

    Hi Khalid,
The ASAs cannot replicate configs between two different devices (which are not in failover or clustered).
Therefore, you would need an external solution.  This could be using something like CSM, to deploy the same policy to both boxes, or you could script it.
A script would probably log into your primary box, download the config, and then parse the security policies (ACLs, NAT, inspections, etc)... then log into the secondary box, remove the security policy and apply the same one from the primary.
    I hope it helps,
    David.

  • Sync group down? All my agents from different locations offline in same time.

Now is 2014-10-17, 10:22PM EST. Portal shows all my agents from 3 different locations offline. The last sync was done at around 8:30. I've confirmed my agents are online, and they can successfully ping service. Last nite was another nightmare, it look more
than half an hour for a sync cycle. Went back to normal all the suddent at 4am early morning.
    What's going on?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
The service went back to normal at 1AM EST. It was down for 4 hours 30mins. But the service interruption is just too sudden and frequence as I said it went down on Thursday (16th Oct)  night as well.
    Here's my sync group info.
Sync group ID : a0d2cc7b-3a3e-481f-a3b5-be26a373fd5a_Southeast Asia
    Region : Southeast Asia
Date time of the issue : 17th OCT 8:30PM EST to 18th OCT 1:00AM EST
Traing ID : No error found from logs since the sync group didn't work at all. It showed all of my agents offlined. And the sync group showed "Warning"
Please let me know if you need additional info. Thanks.

  • How to setup Time Machine on 2 drives in 2 different locations

I back up on 2 different drives in 2 different locations. Time Machine only remembers 1 drive so every time I go home I have to open TM pref and switch drives to backup to. Is there a way to get TM to remember the settings for both drives and make it a plug and play backup?

the following method was proposed by biovizier on this forum and it seemed to work when I tried it. you can try it and see if it works.
First, give both backup drives the same name. then enable showing hidden files in finder. you can do this using Tinkertool or using the following terminal command
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE; killall Finder
then open the TM drive at home in finder. there will be a file at its top level with the name like .001d4f56a01d. Copy this file to the main disk, go to the other location and move this file to the other TM drive.
You'll have to authenticate with your admin password to do this. then unplug and replug the TM drive and
see if TM backups work without reselecting the drive.
you also might have to change the ownership on that file - I'm not completely sure about that.

  • Saving screenshots to a different location?

Somewhere, there is a preference to set the default location to save screenshots... I can't find it now! I have one of my machines set to save screenshots to a folder on my desktop, so I know this is possible. But I can't seem to find that preference on a second machine. I thought it was a preference setting in Cocktail, but it isn't there.
Can anyone tell me where to set the default location for saving screenshots? I need to set it to a folder instead of Mac OS's default of the Desktop.
    Thanks!

I would love to know how to set a different location. How do you do this in Leopard and Snow Leopard?

  • What is the best way to work on the same InDesign file in different locations?

I'm the creative director for an in-house creative department. We produce 37 catalogs and a multitude of print and electronic advertising each year, plus a variety of other items. Our problem is that we have two locations. In the current set-up, if I want someone at one location to work on a project but the files are at the other location, I have someone at the one location package all the materials involved with that project and either upload them to DropBox or copy them to an external drive and ship it. Not very efficient.
We have servers at both locations but there are different files at each location. I'm able to remote from my computer into a computer at the other location, but if everyone were to do that we would need double the number of CC subscriptions and computers, and it would bog down the internet connection that the entire company uses. I'm also connected to the server at the other location (again, over the internet) and have opened InDesign files that reside on the server there and tried to work on them here (over the internet) but that is much slower than remoting in.
The only way I can think of to alleviate this problem is to run duplicate servers at each location, but this would be an update and back-up nightmare (unless I'm missing something). Is anyone operating this same way and, if so, how are you dealing with it?
We can't be the only company that works like this. Maybe I'm just missing something.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

One tiny thing bothers me about your setup. And you said it above, you would need double the number of CC subscriptions and computers. Are you using two people to access under the same CC subscription. Even if they are working in two different time zones, it is technically violating the rules and spirit of the rules of being able to install on two machines at the same time.
You're allowed to install for two machines for one person working at the office and then at home. One person wouldn't be in two different locations at the same time.
Meanwhile, regards your problem, I remember reading about a system many years ago that was pretty simple. It was based on an old newspaper/magaizine system of "who has the folder." (Created before computers) In the old days, if someone was working on a file, they left a folder with their name in its place.
In the computer age, one person, working on a file, would move it to their desktop. Then, they would leave an empty folder with that document's name where it had been as well as their initials. So if I took "Shoes and Socks Fall 2015.indd" out, I would leave a folder named "Shoes and Socks Fall 2015_smsc" in its place.
And if it was necessary for me to have the images, I would make a copy of them onto my machine so I wouldn't tax the network. Then when I was finished, I would copy the file back to the server. The links should show up. If not, we could relink later.
With the empty folder on the server, anyone could tell who is working on a project. So if they were late getting it back, you could email them.
It relies on the people being disciplined enough to make the folders, move the docs, etc. But since you've ruled out all the systems for companies with dumb employees, you're going to have to make them follow the rules.

  • Dock connector in different location?!

Is the dock connector to the 2nd generation iPod in a different location? I just bought a brand new Ipod 8gb nano and two docking stations that are "ipod nano compatible" for a co-worker. To my dismay, I can't dock the ipod. Do I have a defective unit or has Apple actually changed the location of the connector, thereby rendering all first generation accessories useless?
I am just stunned at the moment. I wish apple would advertise this little fact...

The 8Gb nano has different overall dimensions, as you found out, so many of the accessories that were designed for the nano won't be compatible (e.g. the nano dock, headphones such as the Lanyard headphones, etc. - anything that is based on the original spacing between the speaker jack and the connector and case.
As for the dock, there is a hack, although not an easy one. It turns out that the dock comes apart very easily, and if you machine the slot on the plastic cover to be about 1/8 inch wider (on one side only) and put it back together, it works fine. I used a dremel tool and mine turned out pretty good.

  • Time Machine in two locations?

Can I set up TimeMachine to do separate, full backups on two different disks?
I was thinking of having one TimeMachine disk at home and another at the office. If I could use both, it would give me backups at two different locations.
    Could I create TimeMachine 1 and TimeMachine2?
    or
Can I set up different locations?
    Ric

It will not do two separate backups on two currently attached disks. For that your best bet would be to set up one drive for TM and then clone it to another drive. However, from your description of having one at the office and one at home it will work, you'd just have to switch between the drives manually when you plug the second drive in. Currently TM saves info about the backup drive so if you plug a second drive in it wont automatically discover and back up to the drive, but you can designate this in the Time Machine preferences. The scenario would be when you get to each respective location and plug in the drive at that location, you'd have to open time machine preferences and select that drive.

  • Setting backup on two different location

Hello, people. I am a newbie DBA and at my work place , Using RMAN for my backup strategy I want to set up a backup to two different location ( e.g A:\backup and B:\backup), I have configure two channels, and also set configure device type disk parallelism 2, but I seem not to be getting the result i need.
What does configure device type disk parallelism actually do?
For me to proceed, what do i need to do? thank you.

Question is, do you want A:\ & B:\ backup locations to by synchronized? If so, you'll need to use the COPIES parameter (could also copy the backupset once the backup is complete). Setting the PARALLELISM alone will not synchronize the two backup locations.
In your case, it would appear that you manually allocated multiple channels with a format specified, therefore RMAN produced the three pieces in A:\ and the one piece in B:\ .
What you'll experience with multiple copies AND multiple channels (parrlelism 2 for example) is that one channel will grab a group of files and begins backing up to the multiple locations while channel two grabs another group of files and begins backing up to the multiple locations at the same time.
    Hope this helps.

  • Albums appear in different locations

I have quite a few various artist albums in my library, some appear under V and other appear at the end on the collection after numbered artists (10cc, 10000 Maniacs etc) information in album info appears to be the same for albums in different locations and source files. Not a massive problem I know but frustrating!

From what i understand,  there is a check period (every hour) that time capsle will search through your HDD for files that are not backed up.   I think it is supposed to stop while the laptop is in battery mode, but there is always the possibility that it is checking anyway, which would contribute to some battery drain.
Time Machine has an option called "Back up while on battery power." I have that option turned off.
I don't think Time Capsule is a significant contributor to this. The check is simply a quick poll over the network. The network traffic and energy use for this check is probably a lot less than whatever power the CPU and radio consume checking email and loading up whole web pages.
The wifi signal strength may be a factor, but on the whole it's hard to say what's really causing the difference without inventorying the specific settings and applications in use and the CPU loads of the applications.

  • I have multiple Imacs with the same account at different locations...

I have 4 Imacs, all the same generation running OS X and an Ipad that I use for work. Each are located in a different location. Is there a way to sync them all so that when I put photos or documents in one, it will send to each of them? I have Google Drive and Dropbox, but I would prefer a more integrated option directly in Apple. I heard that more sharing options were available with the latest OS, but I don't want to necessarily update if it still will not accomplish my overall goals. I'm sure this has been asked, but when I search I seem to find nothing but differentiating between 2 Ipads, or 1 Mac with multiple accounts instead of the other way around. Any help appreciated.

  • Find my iPhone gives 2 different locations

I lost my iphone 5s in a rural location. Find my iphone shows it in the middle of a field about 5 miles away from where I lost it (it has been static there since I got back home and searched for it). However, when I pressed the car icon for directions, it shows a different location, a footpath about 2 miles away.  Why might that be?  Is it possible that the location is so inaccurate that the phone is really still where I think I dropped it, about 5 miles from the reported location?  Given these are all rural locations, searching is hard (lots of plant ground cover) so having a good idea where best to look further would be very helpful...

Thanks tonefox; a sensible guess, but not correct. There was a road right by the field, so that wasn't the reason.
Here's what actually happened: I found my iphone in a shed at home - some 4 or 5 miles from the nearer (and 6 or7 from the further) of the locations on findmyiphone. So both results were wildly inaccurate.  It was only findmyiphone that convinced me that I must have dropped it on a walk and that it must have been found and moved by someone else. We spent many hours searching the three possible areas (two shown by find my iphone, and then the area where we had actually walked) before we decided a thorough hunt of the garden was a good idea, as I'd been chopping wood there all afternoon.  It was in the woodshed...
Normally findmyiphone correctly locates stuff at my house, even though GPS is intermittent here (we live in a fairly remote and mountainous area) but this time it was wildly out. And I am still baffled as to why it showed two different, very wrong, locations.

  • How can I use 2 time capsules in different locations (home/work)?

I want to use 2 time capsules in different locations (home/work) for backing my macbook pro with time machine. OS: lion.
I am new mac user and have in general lmited computer programming understanding. So, please, simple step-by-step guidence will be greately appreciated.

Each time that  you change location with your Mac, you will need to do the following:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
    Click Use for Backup

  • HT204053 Is it possible to sync calendars between two different users?

Is it possible to sync calendars between two different users?

    Hi
Installing the drive into the older machine may work, you WILL get a lot of driver errors and the unit may even fail to boot. The other problem is that the drives may not be compatable, the drive in the broken PC is a SATA drive, older PCs had IDE drives with very different connectors.
Your best option is to do as you suggest and obtain a USB caddy and extract the data that way.
Make sure that the caddy you get will support SATA drives (all new ones will).

What is the impact of 'GMT' timezone onto client session from different locations?

    munno,
I don't think your question is specific to Database Machine or Exadata at all. The same questions arise any time there are two servers in different time zones that service the same application. The answers are specific to your application and database configuration. If you use the TIMESTAMP data types that include timezone, it shouldn't matter. Unfortunately, most customers aren't using these types. The data in the database shouldn't change based on where the database server is located IMO - the application should insert the data with whatever time it wants/needs.
Changing the time zone on storage cells requires you to run the ipconf utility. Changing the database server time zone is done just like any other Linux server - nothing special there and there are many good doc sources for that that any competent Linux administrator should be able to find if they don't already know.
Hope that directs you to the answers you need.
