Syncing to a new computer: What will I lose?
Hello, and thanks for any help in advance.
I'm biting the bullet and syncing my phone to a new computer so that I can continue to add music and such to it via iTunes. I want to know what I should expect to lose in the process, since I can't seem to find a straightforward answer...
I realize I'll lose all of my music on the phone. What else, though? Will my contacts disappear too? I'm assuming the synced photos will be gone as well. I ran a back up, but I'm not sure what that does, exactly. What about my text message and call history?
I'm just looking to find out what I'll lose and what will still be on the phone after this process is done, so that I know now whether or not I need to figure out a way to save the data I may lose.
Before you sync to the new computer, just copy all the tunes from your old computer to the new one and build playlists on the new one. Copy your contact info and calendar info as well. Photos too, if you sync them. Then when you sync your phone to the new computer, tell it to sync the new playlists, and the contacts and calendar. At the end of the sync, you'll have all the stuff you had before -- no need to lose anything at all.

I was syncing my ipod touch on a friend's computer and now want to sync to my new mac book, will I lose all my stuff?
Not if you do the following:
- Transfer iTunes purchased to the new computer:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
- Transfer other music by using one of the third-party programs discussed here:
new PC: Apple Support Communities
- Move a copy of the iPod backup file from the old to new computer. That file is located here:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
- After the stuff is moved/transfered, restore the iPod from the backup you just moved to the new computer and sync as necessary. -
If i register my iphone on a new comp what will i lose
help
Actually, you will not have to reinput them all. All you need to do is make sure you have a supported application on the new computer to accept contacts and calendars, ensure there is at least one unique contact and calendar entry (something not already on the iPhone) and then sync. That will trigger the sync to ask if you want to merge the contacts and you say yes. That will take care of them.
As the previous poster said, you would lose your music if you have not backed up your iTunes and transferred it to the new computer. Even if you have copied it over, iTunes will tell you it will erase everything, however since it is available on the new computer, it will sync right back. -
I have an iPod Touch 4th Generation and have not updated the software since I purchased it. When I first purchased the iPod Touch, I synced it with an old computer and an older version of iTunes. I no longer have access to the old computer and no access to the older music I downloaded onto the old computer. If I update the software for my iPod, will I lose all of my music that is currently on the iPod?

iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Since your updating from iOS 4 to iOS 6, you will most likely lose your songs, but if songs were purchased from iTunes, you can try this:
Downloading past purchases from App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
You can redownload from iTunes on your iTouch, if running iOS 5 or better. -
I have no problem resorting the apps and losing the playlists from the other iTunes. I just want to be sure nothing will be lost.

I would suggest backing up your iphone before doing anything. You can do that by right-clicking on the name of your iphone from the source list on the left side of itunes.
I hope this helps!

fellow iPod classic owners,
the problem is a failure to sync with the new computer. the conditions are as follows: the new computer is a pc. it has the latest iTunes software installed. the iPod is installed properly. i'm fully recognized by my iTunes account. there is nothing lacking other than my iPod's refusal to sync with my new computer. what have i left undone? i could be suffering from a duh, but i'm not the only one. nothing in the apple world is as difficult as this one is, at least on the surface. if it were that simple an issue, no one would be having any problems with it. any more information needed can be provided by request. by the way, the computer being used has been authorized. that is a non-issue.
your help is appreciated,
hardphil.I believe the IPOD (Classic) uses USB 2.0, and my new laptop uses USB 3.0. I think they are not compatable because of this. If you find a solution to this please let me know.
Thanks, -

Highly unlikely that it says any such thing.
Try telling us exactly what version of iTunes is installed and what if any messages appears when trying to update it.

I am getting a new computer and need to be sure to back things up from the old computer in order to put everything onto the new computer. I know that itunes music I have uploaded from cd's will not sync from ipad to new computer, but what else should I be aware I will lose when I move to sync with the new computer?
IMHO the best solution is to clone your disk. That will give you a copy of everything. You can do that with either SuperDuper or CCC.

I can't get my ipod touch to sync with my new computer. My old one died. I downloaded itunes and installed music but the ipod will not sync with this new computer. What do I do?
You can only sync with one iTunes library/computer. To switch:

I got a new computer and my IPOD will not sync with the new computer.....I have a ITUNES account on the new computer and is downloading music just fine but it will not sync to the IPOD....What should I do to sync my IPOD? thanks
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.
Attempts to sync an iDevice to a new computer will remove all content from the device and replace it with content from the new, empty library. -

Now that I moved my itunes to a new computer why will my iphone and ipod touch not sync?
I just switched my itunes to my new laptop from my desktop (which no longer works). Everything seemed to be ok after I updated to the newest version of itunes. Now I cannot get my iphone (3G) and my ipod touch to sync at all. In fact when I plugged in my ipod touch it erased everything I had on there. I know these are older devices but I had no problems with syncing previously so why now? Even the backups will not work.
You can only sync to one computer/iTunes library. If you switch iTunes will erase the iPod and replaces the media with what is in the iTunes library of the new computer.
You should have done this:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
You said "Even the backups will not work.". What happens when you try to restore from backup? -
My iPod touch is synced to my old Mac and I have a new PC. Now when I plug my iPod into the new computer it will make the connection sound, but will not show up in my iTunes. I do not care to have the content copied over. Any suggestions?

I tried figuring out the icloud thing but all my settings are set to "on" so it should sync but it isn't... and plugging my ipod into my new computer doesn't change anything. The computer won't pick up the songs on the ipod and the ipod won't pick up the new songs on the new computer.
What do you mean by "won't pick up the songs"?
You can only sync with one iTunes library. However, you can manage mauic and videos among different computer by:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
You can transfer iTunes purchases to a computer by:
