Syncing to a new computer

I was recently forced to format my computer and reinstall itunes,now it's not letting me transfer files between my computer and iphone. I can't imagine this being an uncommon question, does anyone know how to get around this? thanks!

Well, technically, you're stealing the songs from
your friend's computer - which is why it's made to
work this way.
The ipods will only download music TO your Mac/PC if
they're purchased songs.
You'll have to use a 3rd-party software tool or put
legitimate music on your Mac/PC then connect.

I should clarify... I am the 'friend' who put the music on the shuffle. Long story short, the Shuffle was a gift for a child, and the computer in that home had "Millenium Edition" - big problems. I put over 100+ songs as a favor, about 30% were purchased, with the rest from my collection. It was a short term fix, but now my friend has a computer that should work. We live 12hrs apart, so we were looking for a proper way of getting this set right. Really not interested in 'stealing' the songs - not our intent, and it makes sense only one computer should be authorized to play!! So...
1. It looks like I need to de-authorize the 28 songs I paid for, and have the new computer authorized to accept those songs. How do I do that? (again, we are 12 hours from each other. Do I give her my account info to authorize her computer? Apparently I can authorize up to 5 computers, and have considered this).
2. I should burn the rest of my collection, and snail-mail this so it can be added to the new computer "iTUNES" library, correct? I'm late thirties, and feel like a dinosaur, so big thanks for the help ! I should hire a kid to do this for me !!

Apple support is failing to help my issues so I thought its best to turn to the community. OK so I've talked to Apple before about my "other memory" and I performed a soft reset on my phone and it decreased other memory by maybe a gig. A month later now its higher than it was before at over 5.6 gigs, any way how to make it as little as possible?
Also I just got a new macbook pro and I use to sync my iphone 5 to my macbook (2008), how do I make my macbook pro my primary itunes and still keep all my info on my phone? My new macbook pro itunes says its backed up, but when I plug it in it won't sync any new songs or app data to my itunes, etc.
Any help with these issues will much be appreciated!!

"Other" is all of the data for all of the built in apps. If you delete its contents all of your built in app data will disappear. Some of what is contained in other:
email messages and attachments
Reminders
Calendar entries
Contacts
Text messages
MMS messages and attachments
Genius data
Music cover art
Operating system settings
Safari cache
bookmarks
Game Center status
Music catalog
Probably a few I've missed. There was a problem in an earlier version where deleted MMS messages left behind their attachments, but that has been fixed as of 6.1. Some people suggest deleting your music on the phone. DON'T DO IT! The reason that deleting music recovers some Other space is because it deletes cover art. But is also screws up your music, which will no longer play correctly.
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 1 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Your Other is so large, however, that there may be corrupt data contained in it (unless you send a lot of MMS messages with large attachments). If this is the case you should restore the phone as New.

My iPod classic 7th Gen will not sync with my new computer. itunes is installed and updated.

                                       the problem is a failure to sync with the new computer. the conditions are as follows: the new computer is a pc. it has the latest iTunes software installed. the iPod is installed properly. i'm fully recognized by my iTunes account. there is nothing lacking other than my iPod's refusal to sync with my new computer. what have i left undone? i could be suffering from a duh, but i'm not the only one. nothing in the apple world is as difficult as this one is, at least on the surface. if it were that simple an issue, no one would be having any problems with it. any more information needed can be provided by request. by the way, the computer being used has been authorized. that is a non-issue.

I believe the IPOD (Classic) uses USB 2.0, and my new laptop uses USB 3.0. I think they are not compatable because of this. If you find a solution to this please let me know.

My 3GS is dying and it's synced to an older computer. I have tons of datafiles as well as apps, music, text messages, etc. that I need to get moved to the new iphone4 I'm getting. Then I need to move the sync to a newer computer so that I can sync the new phone and new computer.
I understand how to get my apps to transfer to a new pc. That's not the issue. It's getting ALL the data from the 3GS to the 4 and then to a new computer.

When I attempt to sync my iPad I get a warning that I will erase all content on the ipad in order to sync with the new computer. Best option is to use Windows Migration Assistant as Ralph noted.

Or if you only want iTunes (Migration Assistant let's you choose) copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from your PC to /Music/ on the Mac.
FYI: A MacBook is not a PowerBook. PowerBooks were discontinued in 2005.

You cannot merge Apple ID accounts, that has never been supported.
You can contact the Apple ID Security folks per the listing in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699 and they can help reset security questions and get the account working.

I do have a follow up question though about my wife's iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1. All her calendar and contacts are on the Cloud - not running through anything like Outlook or Windows Address Book, as far as I can tell. In the past, we previously synched with a PC.
Since the calendar and contacts are on the Cloud, can we synch using the steps wjosten details on a new PC and not lose the calendar / contacts? If not, do you have any advise? Thanks.

If she doesn't want to sync her calendar and contacts with a supported program on her computer such as Outlook, just uncheck Sync Calendar and Sync Contacts on the Info tab of her iTunes sync setting before syncing (which I assume is what she was doing before). She can continue to sync these with iCloud if that what she prefers by going to Settings>iCloud and turning Contacts and Calendars to On).

If you have a backup, restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the computer. This restores the library and device association files. If for some reason you chose to only back up the media and not the entire iTunes folder, then the only option is to let iTunes wipe the drive and re-sync.

You don't. Backup your itunes library on the old computer and move it to the new computer.
