Syncing two Macs with Server

I have a 2012 Mini running Server, and a 2012 MBP. The Mini is my main machine, and I use the MBP when I'm outside the house or just sitting on the sofa.
Anyway, I want the MBP to be a mirror of my Mini's user account. Mail is sorted by IMAP servers; I use iCloud for contacts, calendars, photos and iTunes.
But that still leaves the documents. Ideally, I want REAL TIME syncing, like you get with DropBox. But just between the two machines when they are on the same LAN.
Someone has suggested using mobile user accounts, but I'm not sure that's ideal. Am I right that it only syncs when logging out? In any case, the two user accounts are likely to be logged in simultaneously, which is asking for trouble.
I'm surprised this isn't asked more often -- if it has been and my Google fu is lacking, please point me in the right direction. I've looked at other products but most don't offer real time.
Thanks

FWIW, I've not yet encountered a really good generic real-time documentation synchronization tool — they all have trade-offs.
Having users logged in and active in parallel and the resulting necessity to resolve conflicts is not an easy problem, in the defense of the folks working on this.
The Apple solution here is iCloud for the documents that supports.   I've previously tried using Apple's portable home directories mechanism (PHDs), and those do work but have their own requirements and some limitations — and the requirement to deal with the occasional synch bugs and synch conflicts.
Tools such as rsync and git can be common recommendations with trade-offs, and using those terms and searches for alternatives to DropBox will find you various other discussions.
OwnCloud will be another approach, but with a different approach and with different requirements and limitations.
Of all of these, I'll be next looking at OwnCloud.

  • Anyway to sync two Macs with separate libraries?

    Hi
My laptop and desktop have MOST of the same 11,000 songs. But the desktop has the most accurate comments, BPM and genre categorization. The laptop though has extra songs that I brought in via cd. Is there a way to sync/duplicate the desktop's library on the Macbook Pro and yet not lose those extra songs?
I deejay quite a lot but cannot afford to hope that music in the cloud is going to be fast enough in places where there is weak or no signal. Is there a way to sync these two libraries now that iTunes Ranger won't work in Mountain Lion?
    Thanks

If all you want to do is copy music from one source to another, the best method would probably be homesharing.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819 .

Yes you can but they both must be running Lion v10.7.2 at the minimum and requires a Wi-Fi network.
Learn how to set up iCloud on all your devices
Why WiFi? it works with any internet connection, wired or wireless.

  • Sync two Macs without .mac??

    Hello there...
Is there any way to sync two macs without using .mac? I have a G4 iBook and a G5 iMac and I would like to sync their iCal so both calendars look the same on each computer.
    Thank you for your help.
    Hagen

Free eh? (Why does everybody want something for nothing these days?)
Well, there is notMac, but you need your own server, and alot of time and technical know-how to set it up.
Otherwise nothing free... developers (like regular people) generally like to be paid for their work and long hours.
For $25 you can get iSynCal
For $20 you can get BusySync

  • Can I use iCloud to sync two devices with different apples Ids?

Can I use iCloud to sync two devices with different apple ID's

What do you mean by "apple ID"?  There's an ID you can use at the iTunes store to buy songs, apps, etc.  there's an ID you can use for your iCloud account - the two can be different or the same. So which service are you referring to when you talk about an apple ID?

  • How do I sync two ipods with two different IDs on the same computer?

How do I sync two ipods with two different IDs on the same computer?

Simply connect them.  One computer with one iTunes can manage multiple devices.  They're tracked by S/N but you might wish to assign them unique names so that you can track them yourself.
The only minor issue is app updating and purchases while on the computer.  It's necessary to log out and back in to the "correct" ID.  Much easier to do these things from the iPods.

  • How to sync two IPhone with one PC , but with different applications

How to sync two IPhone with one PC , but with different applications ?
We have two IPhones , but one PC , we want to sync separately , is that possible ?

Absolutely, connect each phone, select what content you want on each phone, then hit the sync button. iTunes will keep everything straight, by device, upon subsequent syncs, including separate backups.

  • Syncing two macs: what will work without icloud?

Hello. I'm considering buying a second mac, or finding a totally different solution. One of the key questions is: can i still sync two macs; or: what, if anything at all, will sync, what won't without using icloud (which is  totally out of the question, and please no debate on that in this thread, i simply want to know the facts).
    Thanks a lot

you may be right. The decimus guys however don't even get their own web site together, which doesn't inspire a lot of trust. Besides, what I really want synchronized, and what I don't see in their list, is iCal, Address Book, everything that happens in mail (sent mail appear as sent on both machines even outside imap accounts), and of course it would help to have everything in like the document folder in sync. If reminders and notes would go in sync, too, good.
Now, like I said you're probably right in principle about the two machines situation. But I might consider getting the smallest MacBook, which probably won't match my MacPro, and won't accept a 2560/1600 external monitor either. Don't know yet.
    Thanks

  • With Muti-clip gone from FCP X, is there a new way to sync two cameras with FCP X

With Muti-clip gone from FCP X, is there a new way to sync two cameras with FCP X

I film with two cameras then copy the files from each camera into their own folders. I then use ClipWrap to convert the MTS files into AIC.  If the recording was one long contiguous session, many cameras will split the MTS files into 2GB chunks.  ClipWrap will Convert Multiple to Span to reassemble them properly.  With the AIC .MOV file from ClipWrap, I then use FCP X to Import the MOV files from camera 1 and camera 2.  I prefer to do it that way versus using FCP X Import from Camera.  I then move the clip from camera 1 onto the timeline in the "primary storyline" (FCP X terminology).  I drag the camera 2 clip above the camera 1 clip and line up the audio from the two cameras while that audio is still attached to the video so everything stays in sync.  FCP X has a way to automatically sync two soundtracks, but I have not gotten around to that yet.  With camera 2's clip attached to camera 1's clip as a "connected clip" above the camera 1 video, I then do an edit to go between the cameras as seems best to me.  When the connected clip of camera 2 video sits above the camera 1 video, it will take priority over the camera 1 video.  I then split camera 1's video clip taking out sections when I want to go back to the camera 1 view. Of course I can trim camera 2's clips until I get it the way I want it.  Since FCP X uses the magnetic timeline concept, and camera 2's clip is "connected" to the camera 1 clip, as you split and trim camera 2's clip, everything will stay in sync across the two camera "tracks".  When there is no camera 2 video above the camera 1 video, camera 1 video will be seen.  When camera 2 video is above camera 1 video, camera 2 video will be seen instead.  With a single editing pass, I can then do all the editing I need to go back and forth between two cameras.  The same concept is expandable to other camera "tracks" as long as you are using vertical position in the timeline to determine which camera is seen when.  If you would like for it to look like a multi-camera track composit like before FCP X, you can simply select all your clips and make a compound clip out of it.  You will then see the multiple camera clips side by side in a single "track".  Double click on that "clip" in that "track" to go into the structure and editing individual "tracks" around if needed.  Think of a compound track as what a sequence used to do.  Anyway, there may be other, and easier ways to do this, but with a single edit through my recording, I can easily and visually cycle back and forth between camera views.  It's just that things are called differently now ... and, as of this time, we do not have a single button camera switching function to let us view multiple cameras simultaneously and switch between them using a keystroke for each camera.  Still, I have a way to do it, and it has worked very well for me, in fact I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I could do multi-camera in post.  Hope this at least gives you one option.  Others may have a better way.  Best wishes.
    stephen
