Syncing/Updating iPod Question

I have about 990 tunes on my iTunes that are all added to my iPod. If I want to add say 5 songs to my iTunes and I click on "Update iPod" will it update all 995 tunes now or will it recognize that the only tunes not on my iPod on the 5 new songs I just added to my iTunes library?
Am I better off doing a manual update and manually adding the 5 tunes to my iPod?
The reason I ask is because recently I just had all my songs on the iPod and not in iTunes. When I did this whenever I added tunes to the iPod the songs would not show up alphabetically making it difficult to search for a specific song. Someone told me that you could correct this by managing your songs in iTunes and then updating your iPod. I just don't want it to update all 990 tunes every time I update my iPod. Just the new ones and any playlists that have changed.

when you synch automatically only the changes get synched - that includes any changes to teh info in the Tag, playcounts, artwork added etc.
The basic answer in to your question is yet it will only add the 5 songs you added in iTunes.
BUT as you have found out if you delete songs from iTunes and are on auto synch they will delete from teh iPOd next time you synch

Trouble with Syncing+updating Ipod

So for a while now I have tried to update to the new Ipod software. Every time I try it says it needs to Sync and back up my music and apps. But every time it seems to freeze during backing up. I've tried syncing without trying to update the software, restarting my computer and little things like that (I'm not all that tech-savy) but still no luck. I've made sure to update to the newest Itunes. I'm out of things to try, please help, its driving me crazy.

Special syncing with iPod question, playlist

Hi- I have 2 playlists. I only want those 2 playlists to sync with my Nano. How do I get it so only those two playlists update automatically without the "ipod selection" playlist being created and a lot of the music I don't want copied over to my ipod.

When your iPod is docked & the iPod "summary" tab is displayed in iTunes, the second tab is "music", click on that tab. Under "sync music", the second choice is selected playlists where all of your available playlists will be displayed. At that point, you can choose what playlists you wish to sync to the Nano by checking "selected playlists' & then check the specific playlists you wish to sync.

Updated iPod question

I had to replace my 4Gen iPod with a new 5Gen video iPod.... natch, it comes with the installation CD etc......
when going to use this iPod for the first time with my existing iTunes, , can I just connect and get going, without loading that installation CD? My iTunes is working just fine, , don't want to mess anything up with an install from this CD......

Sounds like you were right for this discussion. However, I have installed 4 iPods from 4gen 20g to 60g photo and two 30g videos and each time my computer needed to recognize new hardware, recongize iPod, and prompted me to restart the comupter in order for them to be regognized. I did attach before starting iTunes.

Has anyone else had a problem with the Artist search buttons search peramiters changing after Apples latest ipod update ? I synced my ipod touch recently and it came up with a message saying a new update was available for the ipod but might take an hour .

Last time I synced my ipod touch it ofered me an update for the pod that could take about an hour , I did it and now it doesnt search properly . When I used the Artist tab at the bottom of my ipod before it would find every single song on the ipod by that artist (ie it searched by TRACK Artist) . Now it only find the songs by any given artist that are on Albums by that Artist (ie it searches by ALBUM Artist) What that means is it wont find any song by any Artist on a Various Artist CD . HAS ANYNOE ELSE GOT THIS PROBLEM OR A SOLUTION?

Does ATV sync updated music and photos like an iPod?

I just successfully synced my new ATV with my entire iTunes and iPhoto events libraries. It took an entire day to sync it through wireless (couldn't find my ethernet cables). Since this initial sync I have taken more pictures and wanted to sync them over to the ATV. Made the mistake of going to the photo tab and checking the sync last import box. I was worried that if I tried to sync all events again that it would take all day. So of course it erased all my other photos and now I have my lone most recent event on the ATV.
My question is--does the ATV sync updates the same way an iPod or iPhone syncs--in other words will it recognize what is already there and just sync new songs or photos? It doesn't seem as seamless as the other devices since it took several trials and failures to get all the tunes and pics to the ATV first time around. Do I just continue to have it sync all events when I want to update new songs and photos. Thanks for any info...

As long as you are putting the new photos in the same folder (or a sub-folder in that folder) that you have already synced, it will only add the new photos on the next sync. If you change the folder in the "Sync photos from" box, it will erase those synced from the previous folder. This is the same as with an iPod.

Question about syncing multiple ipods to one iTunes library

I have an iPod touch (2nd gen Ver 3.1.3) that I sync to my computer. My daughter recently got an iPod touch (2nd gen Ver 4.0) that was under her father's account. I reset her iPod in order to put it under my iTunes store account. Next I synced her iPod with my computer adding only the items she wanted (games mostly and a few songs).
iTunes didn't seem to have a problem with our devices being different versions. So far so good. I have only synced her device once and haven't synced mine since. We have both purchased apps straight to our iPods and they aren't backed up.
My questions are:
1. Before syncing, will I have to go check everything I want every time in iTunes?
2. We use some of the same apps and games. Will the game data and/or app data be written by another players data? Can you tell I'm really just concerned about my TapFish score?
I'm holding off on syncing until I know the answers.

well, it would be better to keep everything checked in your library and instead create separate playlists for each mobile device.

you can use as many mobile devices as you want with a single iTunes library. iTunes treats each device separately.

I have the iPod touch and I had iTunes on my computer. I was prompted to update my itunes. When I was going to, it said first I should sync my ipod, so, with it connected to my laptop, and itunes on, I did so. Now that it finished, it's messed up!

First of all, I have an iPod Touch which is connected thru my Windows 7 laptop. It has been working find up til now. I have been prompted to dl the latest iTunes update, so I clicked to do so. But I was advised to sync my iPod first, which I did. As soon as that was finished, I got an Apple logo on my iPod and an an empty loading bar. I went to a discussion forum on Google where they said "uninstall iTunes" so I did. I then re-installed iTunes 10 and nothing changed, so I uninstalled it again. One thing I noted was that "Deborahs iPod" was no longer on iTunes when I did re-install it. So now I am at the point where I have a "dead" iPod with only Apple logo and bar against a black bg and nothing else. And I do not currently have iTunes installed on my laptop. My iPod is plugged into it. What do I do know??? Thanks very much for any help.

You said that your computer will sync other iPods? Are they iPod touches? Other iPod use different drivers the the touch And iPhone and iPad).
You can try:

Does it charge? Does the iPod work?
I would try on another computer.

I was syncing my ipod (1st gen) while downloading an update to Itunes and now i get the sad ipod icon...can someone help me out or explain how to get it fixed? cause the Apple STore is acting weird and I don't know what to do

The Sad face icon is usually a very good indication of a hardware malfunction or failure usually with the iPod's Hard Drive, which would also explain the loud clicking noise you are hearing.

So I have a gen2 8gig iPod touch and just the other day updated to 4.3 and now my pod wont show up in iTunes. Is it not compatible? Does this mean I can no longer sync my iPod??

You should still be able to sync you iPod. Your iPod just can be updated past iOS 4.2.1.
Assuming you have a PC, start her to get your computer to see the iPod.
