Syncing/Using iPod on both Mac Leopard and Windows Vista.

I can't use my iPod on Vista without restoring the firmware to work with windows, and subsequently losing all the songs on it! Is there anyway round this? Basically this means that I cannot transfer my purchases onto a second computer.
Not good.

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Mac formatted iPods can only be used on a PC that has a third party helper program such as XPlay or MacDrive installed: How to determine your iPod's disk format
XPlay has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. So you could copy all of your songs to your PC and then restore the iPod to format it for Windows and add the songs back again. A Windows formatted iPod can be used on both platforms though you would have to carry out any firmware updates on a PC to maintain the formatting. If you are interested you can purchase XPlay at this link: XPlay
One last thing, If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
Using iPod with Multiple computers
Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

Can I use iPod on both Mac & PC?

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. Macs can read Windows drives so you could restore and format the iPod on a PC, this would also mean any future software updates would have to be done on Windows. Strictly speaking using a Windows formatted iPod on a Mac isn't supported however many people use one without any issue. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac; however Apple currently only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. Alternatively there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, this is one for instance gets good reviews: XPlay 2
You can read another user's experience of using XPlay at this link: iPod on Mac and Windows

  • Can I install both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on the same version of VMWare 5?

Even though I am running Apple OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on my new 2013 iMac, I have just installed VMWare's "Fusion 5" so I can have Windows 7 installed on the "Fusion 5, for limited usage needs.
I also would like to have a running version of Snow Leopard available to run my large collection of original Lynda.com training DVD's and CD's ... which unfortunately, now only allow the Lynda.com GUI player to operate in (and up to) Snow Leopard (at least this is what the Tech folks at Lynda.com have told me).
Since Lynda.com is no longer producing any or their training programs on CD or DVD any longer, and because they have stopped supporting their training programs to run on Lion and above, I will have to have a version of Snow Leopard installed to run these training programs, and still be able to run them using the Lynda.com GUI player.
    So here's my dilemma:
    1.  Can I install both a version of Snow Leopard OS on my "VMWare "Fusion 5" .... along with a running version of Windows 7 on       the same "Fusion 5"?
    2.  Do I install only the Windows 7 on the VMWare, and find some other "device" to run a version of Snow Leopard off of?
    3.  Do I consider using "BootCamp", in conjunction with "Fusion 5", to get access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7?
Has anyone had any experience installing BOTH a previous (older) version of Apple OSX  ... AND ... a Windows OS version on one installed version of VMWare "Fusion"?
    OR
Any suggestions on how to set up having access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 .... while keeping OS Mountain Lion as my main OS?

Thanks ... the "You have to purchase Snow Leopard Server" I knew about, and a few days ago I just ordered a copy from the Apple Store:
    Snow Leopard Server - Ordered at: 1-800-692-7753 ... OR ... 1-866-254-8313
I asked for Apple Snow Leopard Server (Model MC588Z/A (SLSVR)
    "Unlimited Client License"
It was around $25.50 (USD) with sales tax and shipping (NYS).
One thing though ... when you mention:  "you should make two virtual machines".
Not being too familiar with "Fusion 5" yet, Is setting up "two machine" all done under one installed version of "Fusion 5"?
Would you have "links" to any "Fusion 5" installation instructions/info for setting up the
"two machines" (one for Snow Leopard and one for Windows 7)?

  • Can I install both mac os and Windows 7 on MacBook Pro?

Can I install both mac os and Windows 7 on MacBook Pro?
I saw Windows XP picture on this website. And I would like to try mac os while using Windows 7.
And does Windows 7 on MacBook Pro support high quality game experience? Im sick and tired of reducing to low quality graphics to play some nice games such as GTA 4 and new released games. Hope I can play games with high quality.

If you have a brand new MacBook Pro or have installed Lion on an older one, you can only instal Windows 7 on Boot Camp (for some reason you can't use Vista or earlier). If you have a Windows 7 CD and a license, it's pretty easy to do via Boot Camp. See here for instructions: http://support.apple.com/manuals/#macos
If you install via Boot Camp, Windows 7 will run as fast as your computer is. Generally, MacBook Pros are very fast laptops, so you should be pretty good. That being said, just like any laptop, if it's a cheaper MacBook Pro, you won't have access to as capable graphics processing as more high-end machines. So if it's a newer game with crazy impressive graphics, you will likely not be able to tap into the highest settings on the game on any laptop.

  • Using iPod with both Mac and Windows

Is it possible to use the same iPod on both a Windows and Mac computer back and forth without losing all my songs and videos?
Right now I have Windows, but I'm getting a Mac and I want to be able to switch back and forth from computer to computer. Is this possible?
If not, how can I keep my songs and videos and put them on the new Mac? My CD burner is broke, so that's out of the question. If I had to choose, I'd want them to be on the Mac instead of the computer with Windows, but that's currently where my iTunes library is.

You can't use it on both. iPods get formatted for one or the other and then keyed to a single computer.
You can, however, move all of your files from one computer to the other. The easiest way would be target disk mode, but requires that the Windows PC have a FireWire port (which is fairly uncommon for Wintel boxes). You could also use an ethernet network cable between the two or connect them to the same network. Then, open the Mac's System Preferences, go to the Sharing preferences, and enable Windows Sharing or Windows File Sharing. With windows sharing selected, read the message that appears at the bottom of the screen. Something like "Windows users can access your computer at \\192.168.1.100\user"
Then, go to the Windows machine, open My Network Places (should be on the desktop, but if not try My Computer). Look for the "Entire Network" and try to find your Mac. If you have trouble finding it, do a search. Set it to look for "Computers" with the name... and enter your computer's name EXACTLY as is appears at the top of the Mac's Sharing preferences pane (capitals, spaces, lower-case, etc.). You can also try a search for the "\\192.168.1.100\user" address.
Once you find your computer, make a shortcut in the My Network Places folder for future use. Double click the icon for your mac and enter your Mac OS X short name and password in the SMB access dialogue (your short name can be found in System Preferences > Accounts > you). You should now be connected to your home folder on the Mac. You can drag and drop any files from the windows PC to your home folder (or folders within it).

  • How can I use single hard drive for both Mac OS and Windows without changing the formats and reformatting?

I have a windows PC and a Macbook Air and a 1TB external hard drive. They said in order to transfer large files into the hard drive you have to change the format of your hard drive (which would be from MS-DOS to Mac Os extended) so how can I use my external hard drive on my windows PC without reformatting its files? Please heeeelp

Natively Windows can read and write to NTFS, FAT32, and exFAT while the Mac can read and write to FAT32, exFAT, and MacOS Extended.
Option 1: You can purchase driver software for Windows to allow it to read and write Mac's MacOS Extended or you can purchase a driver to allow the Mac to read and write to NTFS.
Option 2: you can format the hard drive for exFAT and use it with both Windows and the Mac without purchasing any special drivers. (Obviously the 4GB file size limit is why you don't want to use FAT32)

  • File sharing across a network --- Mac (Leopard) and PCs (Vista) -- problems

Been trying to setup file sharing so that I can access an iMac from a Vista PC. Followed various help threads, and have a specific question as relates to setting the file sharing preferences. From system preferences/sharing, have checked "File Sharing", and the shared folders displayed are the default public ones for the two users of the iMac. That is what I want. I next click on the options button in the same sharing window, where "Share files and folders using AFP" is already turned on (checked). From the data I have read, I next try to set up sharing using SMB, checking on that option (cause I think I must do that - from what I've read).
This is where I run into problems. If I just check for share files and folders using SMB, and don't check off on the individual user accounts, when I try to access the iMac from the Vista PC, I get a login dialog box when I click on the iMac in my network screen. Not sure what to do with that ... _as I only want guest access to the public folders on the iMac_. If, however, in setting up SMB I check on the individual user accounts (and provide the requested passwords), then when I access the iMac from the Vista PC, I don't have to login to the iMac at all .... but all folders/all iMac hard drive data is now available/editable to me. This is not what I want. Only want network access to the iMac public folders. But as I noted earlier, if I set up SMB without checking off on the user account names, then I am presented with a login box when I click on the iMac icon on the Vista PC.
Have read numerous articles on this ... and think I am close. So ... bottom line ... want iMac access from Vista PCs but only want access to the iMac public folders. Don't want access to the entire iMac hard drive.
    Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks.

Some additional insight to share. Some successes, but still some questions.
Was reading around the web on this topic and found something that indicated that I should create a new, non-admin account on the iMac and make that the user that is shared. The other two users that I was attempting to share the public folder were both admin users, and this may account for showing all of the hard drive when I accessed the iMac from the Vista PC.
So I created this new "standard" user account, and share that public folder, and it all works. Now here is the still questionable. From one vista PC, when I click on the iMac I get a login prompt. At that point I can log into the iMac or just access the iMac via guest access. Both work.
But from a different Vista PC, clicking on the iMac does not prompt a login shell to appear. I just walk into the iMac shared folder. Do not understand this behavior. Would've expected that any Vista or windows PC would get a login shell when trying to access the iMac. That is not the case. Any thoughts why the 2 Vista PCs behave differently?

  • File Server For Both Mac OSX and Windows?

    Hello All,
With HP discontinuing theier HP Server line, I've been browsing around for quite some time at a good box to use as a file server.  My windows Home server is about to die i feel, and most PC based servers seem just as pricey as me acquiring a Mac Pro Server with Two 1TB Hard Drives and using OSX Lison Server.
However, before I take that plunge I was really wondering if anyone had had any success or stories that they can share about using a Lion Server with windows 7 PC's.
I use a MAC, but everyone else here uses windows.  On my the home server box we bascially store all of our digital photographs, personal files and such as a backup.  Granted the Apple time machines and mac mini's can be used as the same but you loose the redundant hard drives and stability of comintuing to upgrade if you run out of space.
So I'm hoping that its positive and pretty much flawless where the Mac Pro with Lion Server could just save and serve files galore without slow down or problems.  With my past mac experience that's usually not the case.  I just want to replace that box, have a new box that can store files off of the independent machiens with a here or there additional backup on it as needed.
The other plus if I take this plunge is I have a Mac Pro box for greater functionality at home over my Macbook Pro!   So yeah, a little perk for me...
Thanks in advance for any news you can help or offer me...  I know I'm probably asking something that a ton of others may have alredy asked and sorry for the duplication if thats the case

Mac OS X Server can do all that.
You can keep All the user accounts on the Server, or you can just use it for File Sharing. Does Windows SMB or Apple File System sharing without issue. Disk Utility can create Mirrored RAIDs right out of the box, that expensive RAID card is only needed for RAID 5.
I run a Server at home like a School Server with ALL User files on the Server (you log on at any Mac and your files appear, because they are on the Server). User files are on a pair of Mirrored RAID drives, and I use Time Machine to automatically back up all the User Files on the Server once an hour. Gigabit Ethernet Switches provide "Hard Drive-like" file access.

  • Installing Acrobat on a machine running both Mac OS and Windows OS

I have a new MacAir (Mountain Lion OS) and that will also have Windows 7 installed (via Parallels software).  I want to install Adobe Acrobat XI (Standard preferably, or Pro if required) so that I can print to a PDF from any application, whether in either Windows or Mac OS environment.  How do I install Acrobat to achieve this?  Do I have to install it TWICE, once in Mac environment and then again in the Windows environment?  Or can I install Acrobat just in the Mac envronment and have it show up as a printer option in Windows applications?  Thank you.

It can't be done. Serials for standalone products are platform specific. Yes, you would have to install it in both environemnts, but as per the previous, it's not possible unless you have 2 licenses. That aside, if all you want to print to PDF, then there's enough free alternatives like GhostScript.

  • Difficulty connecting Mac Mini and Windows Vista laptop

I have a Windows Vista laptop. I have been connecting to the Internet via a wireless DSL router. I just purchased a Mac Mini and want to hardwire the Mac Mini to the router and also create a home newtork where the Mac Mini can transfer files to and from the Vista laptop and vice versa.
What is the best way to do this? Could you please provide detailed information as well? I don't have a lot of experience with computers or networking.
    Thank you!

    Hi Bruce!
What you're wanting to do is very possible and is done often. However, please search Apple's website or Google first or search this forum for answers to your question. They've been asked and answered multiple times.
If you have problems with some of the steps then definitely post back and folks in this forum will be glad to help you get over those hurdles. We're users just like you but our time and efforts aren't unlimited.

  • Issue using Flash IDE with Mac OS and Windows Web Service using NTLM authentication?

I have an existing application that I developed on a Windows machine using CS5.  It uses a local intranet web service written in .NET using NTLM authentication.  The web service does multiple things such as read data from an SQL database, provide the user's username, and test for write/read access to a local company fileshare.  When my company upgraded, I went to a Mac with Flash CC which is great.  However, Mac's don't handle HTTP Authorization Challenge Blocks like Windows machines.  In Safari, Chrome, etc. it will pop up a little username and password box and proceed on without issue.  The issue is in Flash development.  When running the exact same application in Flash testing all script access fails with HTTP Status 401 errors.  I have searched the AS3 documentation, but the only thing built in to handle http challenge requests is in AIR not Flash.  The server admin's and I have tried all method's of cross domain policy files and access changes with no luck at all.  Does anyone have a solution to this issue?

    reloading itunes
    unchecking 'write'
    removing lower filters in regedit
ensuring i had the correct 'gear' info in the upper filters in regedit

i do not know what else to do, i have searched the internet and whatever i saw doable i tried.
when i check the cd drive in itunes i had gotten a 4220 error, cnet advised to download a free error fixer, however, this error fixer gave me and enduser message, so that didn't work.
the diagnostic for the cd burner read that i had to put in a formatted disc with content so i did and there are the results of that were that it read the cd and that the 4220 errir code was encountered last time there was an attempt to burn.
and 'could not open cd handler 32. there is a problem with the installation of the drive in windows or the drive contains a copyprotected cd.
the above is not the case as it also popped up for me to import cd to itunes.
i tried to copy and past the entire contents here but it would not allow me to paste.
    please help!

I too have only recently encountered this problem. I have been able to burn disks before but it keeps making all these weird sounds. It might be a hardware problem but the fact that everything else that uses a disk works I doubt it.

  • No Media Button using Palm Desk top 6.2 and Windows Vista

I installed Palm Desk Top on my XP machine today and noticed a Media Button. I have been using the same version of Palm Desk Top on MY laptop which runs Vista Home Premium. How can I get the Media button on my Vista machine?
Post relates to: Treo 700p (Verizon)

This version of Palm Desktop (and Hotsync) are from Access (the company that acquired PalmSource). Palm does not own these applications and may not have legal rights to modiify them any longer.
Access provided the absolute minimum and did not include any enhancements that Palm made to prior versions of these applications when Palm and PalmSource had better working relations.
Access is currently primarily interested in getting their competing operating system to market.
