Syncing without .Mac?

Why is it necessary to have an internet connection to sync when Bluetooth is available on both machines?
I have this problem: Sensitive material on G5 and G4 - security a major concern. Sending info over the internet to sync two machines not an option.
I have no need for additional email addresses, web pages, web storage, photoalbums, etc. This is business.
Security is of course a concern no matter which route one chooses. Bluetooth carries its own risks, and even having two machines wired directly doesn't entirely solve the problem - modern sensor technologies can pick up signals from wires, peripherals (like monitors) over distances.
However, sending the information across the internet is certainly the least desirable option in my particular situation.
How can one sync two machines using bluetooth or, at least without having to use a network connection??
I'd be grateful for any help in this regard.
G4, G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I offered an answer to this issue in another thread where you had posed the question, not realizing that you had posted it separately here. So, for the record, here is what I said:
I was at one time a US Army Military Intelligence officer with an electronic warfare specialty, so I understand information security issues better than most people do. I was once assigned to the Alternate National Military Command Center, a short distance from Camp David. So, I will just assume that your concerns are well founded, but that building a TEMPEST-certified lead lined room is impractical! Okay, I'm just kidding about the lead lined room.
That said, while your specific concerns may be legitimate, for most users they clearly are not. Technology exists to provide secure links, and when the likelihood of selective targeting is considered, the chance that your information could be acquired and used in any manner by another party is almost nil.
Your best bet for unencrypted data transmission on your local area terrestrial ethernet network is to use MySync from Mild Mannered Industries:
http://www.mildmanneredindustries.com/mysync
That application offers high-speed local synchronization of each of the six data groups supported by .Mac Sync, without the need for a .Mac account and without the requirement, therefore, for transmission beyond your relatively secure, wired LAN. Such a channel is explicitly supported by the Sync Services framework, and is a far higher speed link—and inherently more secure—than a Bluetooth link.

  • Ipod Mini will not update and sync without mac freezing up

My ipod mini (4GB) cannot hold all my music so I have to single handedly sort out music i want and don't want. So, one day i decide to click 'restore' so i can just drag and drop playlists. Ever since then itunes freezes up when i plug it in and now it won't recognize it. The only way i can get itunes to respond is by unplugging my ipod mini. Then itunes is fine, like nothing happened. Also i have the most up to date itunes software. i don't know what to do.
    Please help!!

  • Syncing two macs: what will work without icloud?

Hello. I'm considering buying a second mac, or finding a totally different solution. One of the key questions is: can i still sync two macs; or: what, if anything at all, will sync, what won't without using icloud (which is  totally out of the question, and please no debate on that in this thread, i simply want to know the facts).
    Thanks a lot

you may be right. The decimus guys however don't even get their own web site together, which doesn't inspire a lot of trust. Besides, what I really want synchronized, and what I don't see in their list, is iCal, Address Book, everything that happens in mail (sent mail appear as sent on both machines even outside imap accounts), and of course it would help to have everything in like the document folder in sync. If reminders and notes would go in sync, too, good.
Now, like I said you're probably right in principle about the two machines situation. But I might consider getting the smallest MacBook, which probably won't match my MacPro, and won't accept a 2560/1600 external monitor either. Don't know yet.
    Thanks

If your wireless environment is less than ideal, as it is in most inhabited areas, the influence of other wireless networks and devices competing for the same very small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum will affect your network's performance. Your own wireless network is a microcosm of that environment.
To mitigate the effects of competing wireless networks, use 5 GHz to the maximum practicable extent. It is comparatively free from interference contributed by other wireless devices and is likely to remain that way for some time. However, it is less tolerant of intervening obstructions and construction materials than the 2.4 GHz spectrum, so it's not a panacea. Every installation is different so you must experiment to determine the optimum configuration.
Place your wireless router (what kind is it?) in a central location, convenient to all the devices that require it. Most of the time a utility or ISP will locate it in some remote corner next to the utility service entrance. That is almost always the worst possible location.
Others find that only a direct wired Ethernet connection between router and devices will maintain uninterrupted access to Airplay.
That is almost certain to result in the best possible AirPlay performance. Short of having everything hard wired (it's not an option for the iPad for example) use an Ethernet connection for all the devices that lend themselves to that method. Your AppleTV is certainly one of them, since its location is not likely to change very often. Your AirPort Express should be another, since your audio systems are likely to stay put as well. Connect them both to your existing router, either directly or through an inexpensive Ethernet switch. Your problems are likely to be solved with just those two connections.

  • Sync boomarks without .mac?

Is it possible to sync two mac's Safari bookmarks without using .mac? Both macs have Leopard installed...

    Hi Patrick
ChronoSync may be your answer. While you cannot synch the Bookmarks file by itself, you can synch the Safari folder, which contains the bookmarks. You'll also be synching History, Site Icons etc.
This is a very good synching application for many uses.

  • Syncing ical across multiple computers without .mac

    Hi,
Is it possible to sync ical calendars across multiple computers in the same network or over the internet without .Mac? If I have a website or ftp server, can I use that instead to synce over the internet or is there an easier way? Thanks.

    This is another related question.
Having at last extracted a decade of diaries from Palm Desktop as vCal (since you ask I had to go back to Classic as the app quit without writing the export file in Tiger and Leopard, even tho it is otherwise OK) I now have something I can import rather messily into iCal.
However as I have really bad internet access in the Boondocks where I live I don't want to use .Mac to sync between my iMac and iBook. Palm ran very happily from a thumb drive, but I don't see how I can do it as the powers that be seem to have made the data file invisible.
I'd like to move it to the thumb drive and have an alias on each Mac where the data should be - as I do with Palm.
Does anyone know the path, and if there is a problem doing it between Tiger and Leopard?
    Cheers, Colin

  • Syncing iCal calendars without .Mac

My wife has two computers, desktop and laptop. She would like to be able to sync her calendars, one from each machine. Is this possible without .Mac membership. If so, could someone please tell me how it's done?
I do have a .Mac membership. Is it legal for her to publish her calendars to my .Mac and then subscribe to them so they'd show up on her two machines.
Any help at all with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Martin
Intel iMac Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Martin,
Try iSynCal: iSynCal is built to synchronize events and todo from iCal calendars between two or more Mac computers using the standard Apple File Sharing shipped with Mac OSX. Using iSynCal, you no longer need a .Mac account neither to publish your calendars on an external FTP or WebDav server.
You can even use iSynCal to sync your iCal calendars with your iPod or between multiple users on the same Mac.Regarding your second question, legality is not the issue, since the .Mac account belongs to your username, only you can publish calendars to that account.
    ;~)

  • Sync two Macs without .mac??

    Hello there...
Is there any way to sync two macs without using .mac? I have a G4 iBook and a G5 iMac and I would like to sync their iCal so both calendars look the same on each computer.
    Thank you for your help.
    Hagen

Free eh? (Why does everybody want something for nothing these days?)
Well, there is notMac, but you need your own server, and alot of time and technical know-how to set it up.
Otherwise nothing free... developers (like regular people) generally like to be paid for their work and long hours.
For $25 you can get iSynCal
For $20 you can get BusySync

  • How to trigger Bookmarks (Safari) syncing without the need to merge??

I found that my bookmarks were out of sync on my home Mac (although iCloud was active), after I did some sorting and cleaning on the office Mac. Since I found no other way (wait or reboot did not help), I did deactivate and then re-activate bookmarks syncing in Preferences => iCloud => Safari. This DID trigger syncing, BUT (after I was offered the option to cancel or to merge) the result was that now the sorting and cleaning work I did before was lost. In fact, it was worse because of the merge in two directions.
    So the question is:
What can one do to force syncing in a way that avoids the merge?
It is really stupid that there is no option (like with MobileMe) to select the sync direction. Or did I miss that?

OK, you are correct, but this is only due to the phrasing of my last comment and not because of the quality of iCloud syncing. MobileMe was MUCH better in this respect! It DID offer the option to overwrite the data WITHOUT the need to manually delete before.
In addition, this was not the core point.
The main point is that iCloud for (at least to me) unknown reasons did stop performing its job for the bookmarks that were synced before.
I would like to know if there is an option to trigger syncing, without the need to delete manually, and then switch of and on again.
    Again, the question is:
What can one do to force syncing in a way that avoids the merge?

  • Entourage Tasks and iCal "To dos" have disappeared during sync with .Mac

All of my “tasks” (both completed and incomplete) in Entourage and "to dos" iCal have disappeared, apparently during a sync with dot Mac. This problem has happened twice in the past two weeks (the first time I lost all of my Entourage “notes” too, but I haven’t put any back).
The tasks show no problems for a week and then all of a sudden disappear from both Entourage and iCal. My calendar and address book (which I also sync) seem not to be affected. Entourage doesn’t seem to offer a way to sync the calendar without syncing the tasks as well.
    Here are my questions:
    Why did my tasks disappear?
How do I prevent their disappearance again?
has anyone else experienced this problem?
My Entourage database is fine. I’m running Entourage 11.2.3 (which rencently added a feature "sync services" that allows syncing with .Mac and iCal).

I had the same problem and I got my To Dos to appear when I clicked on the To Dos by Priority column header and checked/unchecked the Hide Items outside Calendar View option. (Doesn't seem to make any difference whether it is checked or unchecked ... it displays all of the items ... at least until restart iCal ... then it is a bit unpredictable.)
I also have intermittent problems when I create or change a new Event. Sometimes the change does not appear until I move off the page that I am displaying and come back (e.g. move forward a week in week view and then back.)

Are you running Snow Leopard or later?
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.

  • IPod Classic won't sync to Mac

My iPod Classic 160 GB won't sync to Mac snow leopard, running iTunes 10.5.1. It was fine until I tried to mount my Mom's iPad2 and her iPod Classic 80 GB so that I could load content onto her devices.  Note: both her devices are attached to my iTunes account, so loading content from my account is legit, even though it apparently sent my own iPod into a tailspin.
Now, even in disk mode, iTunes won't recognize the iPod.  It simply shows up on the desktop.  I have tried the four or five "Rs", but as the device doesn't show in iTunes AT ALL, I cannot restore it.  The iPod-based reset solves nothing.
I purchased my current iPod a few months ago to replace an older iPod classic which gave up the ghost after exhibiting some of this behavior.
    Help!

Someone please help me before I go potty!
I am having a similar problem to "Bluebell"'s. Suddenly over the last couple of weeks my iPod Classic 160GB (which has been working fantastically since I bought it 2 years ago) has been acting up. Without going into the total history, the result is that now, when connected (and even though the window on the iPod tells me the device is connected), the iPod icon does not show on the desktop of either of my Macs nor does the iPod show up in iTunes. I have reset the iPod dozens of times and searched high and low on Google for helpful suggestions, but with no luck.
I breathed a sigh of relief when I read your suggestion, Bilbo_cheshire, and tried it immediately, but sadly it doesn't work. This is what Disk Utility tells me:
Verify and Repair volume “Nigel & Lau's iPod”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid sibling link
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume Nigel & Lau's iPod could not be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I can see that Disk Utility gives me the options of "Erase" and "Restore". Should I take either of those routes?

  • Sync my Mac Mini to my iPhone 4

Can I sync my Mac Mini to my iPhone 4, remotely using home sharing? Basically I want to be able to sync music, movies, and audio books to my iPhone without having to dig round the back of my computer for my apple cabble. I want to know if its possible and how I would do it.

I upgraded my MBP to Mac Mini
That's an upgrade? Oh well, wrong forum for that discussion.
and now Iphone 4 won't sync. I used migration assistant to transfer my settings and I can plug the iphone into the new mac mini and it will charge but it won't show up in itunes or sync or appear on the desktop. It still syncs just fine with the macbook pro but I am selling that soon and need to get the phone in sync with the new computer. Any ideas? Your help will be appreciated.
Try going to the top bar in iTunes, Store and Authorize this computer if you have not. You'll want to deauthorize the MBP before selling it.
Not sure this will solve your problem, though.

Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6, is not iCloud compatible.  You need to upgrade to Lion, Mac OS X 10.7, via a download from the app store...$29 (US), provided you had at least 10.6.6.  You can upgrade to 10.6.8 for free as part of the software updated function, then go to the app store and purchase the Lion download.
When you do that, before installing Lion, make a copy of the Lion Installer from the Applications folder where it downloads to some other location, such as your Documents folder, so you have a backup copy.
For Lion you must have at least an Intel Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7, or Xenon processor, 2 GB memory though 4 GB is better and 7 GB free space on the hard drive.
As part of 10.7.2 you end up with the iCloud connection.
