SyncServer constantly using high CPU, causing fans to run

Has anybody found a solution for when the SyncServer process runs wild? I'm running OS X 10.7.1. In the last day or so I've had a problem where I find my laptop's fans are constantly running. Opening Activity Monitor shows the SyncServer process eating a consistent 20-30% of my CPU. I've left it going all day and it never stops.
From what I've been able to determine so far, the SyncServer process doesn't cause any problems until I launch iTunes and sync my iPhone. After that it keeps running. I upgraded to iTunes 10.4.1 yesterday, but I _think_ this problem started just beforehand when I was still running 10.4.
If anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it.

I resolved a similar situation.  I am running OS 10.6.8 and noticed my fan was on constantly.  ActivityMonitor showed the syncserver process using about 15-30% of CPU cycles, with iCal showing up suspiciously high on the CPU list.   I downloaded syncrospector v4.0 from http://goo.gl/logoG (I got that lead from http://help.jools.me/kb/21) and running that app I could see that iCal was syncing about once per second!   A bit more searching took me to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627, and there I found the answer.
"If you see the Sync menu in the menu bar, skip to step 4:  "
I hadn't noticed the little icon in the menu bar, but there it was with an exclamation mark inside it.  Clicking on that I saw a message that there were "conflicts" (about 10, it turned out).   I resolved those and the syncserver problem went away.
Now, there is probably an underlying problem, still.  Just because there are conflicts between iCal and my iPhone, iCal should not be trying to sync more than once per second.  For now, though, I am content.  I'm not going to try to figure out what was really going on.
By the way, this all started when my daughter plugged her iPhone (an old one of mine) into my laptop.  Evidently the old calendar entries on that phone for some reason conflicted with old entries on iCal.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

I'm not changing my default browser though. That route leads to madness. Madness and incontinence. I will remain skypeless until there is a proper fix. Or death. Whichever happens first. I presume after death skype will still be unavailable to me. If that is the case, please contact me via your nearest medium. Unless of course you follow an Abrahamic religion which probably forbids talking to the dead. Or I suppose if you follow the Buddha, I'll be somewhere in the rebirth cycle as I will almost certainly will not have attained enlightenment, though with some hope the people who fix Skype will. Not that I wish them death or anything like that.
Maybe everything will change in your next reincarnation but right now you can try this (with some help from Buddha):
Keep your Chrome as default browser, but when using Skype close any instances of Chrome in Task Manager.

  • Applephotostreams.exe constantly uses the CPU to 50%. Whatever you sync or not.

    Hi!
The system is Windows 7 Home Profession. I installed iCloud application for PC for photostream sync with iPhone 4. The photostream sync is well. But "applephotostreams.exe" constantly uses the CPU to 50%. Whatever you sync or not.
    Help please.

My APSdaemon.exe issue coincided with the same issue from the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe process.
The problem for me was not resolved by iTunes or iCloud uninstall/install (iCloud uninstall or even logoff at a PC is risky for your Outlook data by the way).
    The solution was:
    - OPEN Command Promt with Administrator’s privileges and
    - run:
    netsh winsock reset
    then
    - reboot Windows.
...as posted in a thread about AppleMobileDeviceService.exe by Madblaster6.  Thank you Madblaster6

  • Flash Player using high CPU constantly and heating system

Hi I am in India ... from last few months I am noticing that Flash Player is using too much CPU when ever I run IE, Explorer or opera ... when I disable Flash Player then IE and opera work on normal CPU ... I have uninstalled Chrome since I was unable to disable flash player on it ... I have 2nd generation i5 .. 3gb ram ... dedicated 1gb nvidia graphics card ... 750 Gb hdd ... win7 home premium 64 bit ... I am able to easily play Crysis 2 ... halo ... far cry ... wolfenstein 2009 and many more intense graphic games on my laptop without over heating it ... but flash player causes excessive CPU constant use and system to over heat if I watch a complete movie on you tube ... any other compatible player available plz do tell ..... rgds

Hi ... I use admin account only to install new software or games ... for all other uses I log in as an ordinary account
But even when logged in with admin account the same prb persists ... cause of this flash player prb I have even stopped playing  games on FB & Zynga ...
For this flash player problem I even took it to acer service center and since I have extended service warranty the engineers there ran acomplete check on ram, hdd, graphic card and they also did a complete fresh install of win 7 home premium 64 bit edition. They even completely serviced it, cleaned it and applied new thermal paste ...  but even they were baffled that my system can stand up to high intensity graphic games running from HDD or DVD rom or USB pen drive but if I try to run graphic flash player games for long ie castleville or watch a long movie on you tube then flash player can single handedly cause CPU usage to be constantly high leading to system getting heated up.
Guess will just have to be content without flash ... but some sites require flash player to be enabled and therein lies the problem

  • Major issues with plugincontainer.exe using high cpu freezing firefox 34

Plugincontainer.exe is ruining my experience with firefox by constantly causing it to freeze due to high cpu use. Please advise of a work around or other solution. Thank you.

The only solution I have found was to downgrade to Firefox version 30.
The odd thing is that the high cpu does not happen on all web sites. wsj.com (Wall Street Journal) is fine, but cspan.org is not.
My PC does not freeze up, but it has a sustained CPU usage of 70 to 80 percent. I am running an Intel Dual Core on Windows XP.
Is this the case that my CPU is just to slow? This should no be the case since version 30 runs at the regular 15 to 30% usage.
Forgot to mention that this is the Adobe Flash player that is causing the high CPU readings.
    Thx

  • High CPU usage and continuously running fan

I recently sent off a logicboard to be repaired for a non-charging issue.  Everything worked fine with the exception of the battery would not charge.  I received the board back today and noticed immediately that the fan starts running at high speed within 10 seconds of pushing the power button.  It also boots extremely slow and when it does finally, eveything takes forever to open.  It seems to operate better in safe mode but the fan is still running at about 6200 rpm.  Using iStat, I noticed that the temperature itself is not that bad.   The CPU is running at about 32 C.  And it doesn't feel hot to the touch at all.  But the fan never shuts off.  I have tried an SMC reset and PRAM reset, no joy.   I tried a new hard drive, still no joy.  When I can finally get into Activity Monitor, it says that Kernel_task is using upwards of 200% of the CPU.  Any suggestions on what I can try to get this kernel_task issue corrected and get the fan to slow back down?  Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed on this.

    Tami

I was able to run the Apple Hardware Test and the error is:
    4SNS/1/C0000008: TsOP- - 124
Apparently that has something to do with a temperature sensor.  Of course, I can't find any information on how to replace it or even where it might be located.   Don't even know if it's replaceable.  Can't believe I just got this logic board back from being "fixed" and it's not "fixed!

  • Mail 6.0 in Mountain constantly uses 100% CPU power???

    Hi,
I have upgraded to Mountain Lion and it would be perfect if there was one major issue fixed: when having Mail.app open, this application uses between 80 to 110% of the CPU power constantly. The main issue is reduction of speed of other operations but more concerning is that fan colling fan just runs endlessly.
Has anyone experienced such issue? The activity Monitor shows that Mail uses all processing power.
I use a macbook 13' (unibody) and Mail has an Exchange mail account active (and the iCloud email). After upgrading I recreated all mailboxes (by deleting the V2 folder), server setting is using SSL and no SASL.
Could it be a bug or something in the server settings/account setting?
    Y.

    Finally solved.
Had to delete the full Mail folder (+Maild Downloads) in the Library/Application Support, to recreate the full app support fmor the new version.
    Seems to work normally now.
    Thanks for the tip

    Hi Lee,
You say this is a core router, but as people use this terms to mean different things, are there any directly connected hosts? If there are one thing to check for is hosts sending multicast traffic with TTL=1. If you run the command show ip traffic | in bad hop and look at the rate the "bad hop count" is increasing. If I had a £ for every time I've seen that problem.... I couldn't retire just yet, but at least I could go buy myself a beer or two.
If you're seeing the hop count increasing at a rapid rate there are a couple of options:
Take a read of Troubleshooting high CPU on a 6500 with sup720 starting from the section Tools used to determine the source of the traffic and identify the hosts sending multicast with TTL=1.
If the Catalyst 6500 use PFC 3B add the command mls rate-limit all ttl-failure 100 10 to drop the multicast traffic in hardware.
The first option will take you longer, but at least you identify the cause and can advise the application owner why they should change their applications behaviour.

Hello  - could anyone please assist?
I'm see constant(often daily) alerts that indicate high CPU on one of our Cisco Cat 6500 core switches.
    The PIDs refered to are:
    276 - IP Input
    560 - PIM Process
Combined, these 2 processes take the CPU over 85%, most often hitting 99%.
The core switch is also the Rendevous Point for the LAN.
    Many thanks

  • PMSET Uses 50% CPU Keeping Fan Running

I am having the same problem as described in this (archived) thread (no solution):
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11226077&#11226077
The only thing that appears to 'fix' pmset (at least for a while) is a reboot. This is not a permanent fix since, as time goes by, pmset eventually starts kicking up a fuss and using 50% cpu for regular periods of time--enough to keep the fan running pretty good.
Also, it appears that if the machine goes to sleep/hibernates the pmset issue raises its ugly head sooner.
If I'm running on battery, this seriously impacts battery life; which is rather ironic (not to mention frustrating) since pmset is supposed to be properly performing "power management".
I did try resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) at one point, but alas there was no lasting remedy.

For some reason, it occurred to me that I should try disabling bluetooth, which I did shortly after posting this issue. I have not seen abnormal pmset behaviour since then.
Since I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse this would not be an ideal setup for me to run with at all times.
    Any ideas out there folks?

  • Firefox uses high cpu when playing online flash games like farmville in facebook

Whenever i open games in facebook, firefox uses up high CPU. I tried to install older version of firefox, new version everything has the same problem. There could be some compatibility issue with the adobe flash and firefox.
I am sure that some version works well, because i never had this problem before. Yesterday i had to re-install my XP and after re-install suddenly this issue started, which means this can be solved with proper versions of firefox and flash which i used before.
    Please help!!!!!!!

After I made sure I was running latest FireFox and Flash, I started disabling add-ons. It appears right now that Flashblock is the culprit, at least for me. If you have that, try disabling it.
Also, most of those Facebook flash games have some serious problems with memory leaks and bad programming. Is your problem specific to Facebook games or all flash games?

  • Very high CPU and fans running fast in idle state on 2008 non-unibody Macbo

    Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a 2008 MacBook with 2.4 GHz, 2GB RAM, and 160 GB hard drive off of craigslist. Now when I turn it on and leave it idle or even run any activity, the CPU skyrockets to around 66% and the fans are running very hot and fast. I checked activity monitor and nothing is running that indicates this high CPU. This MacBook does have AppleCare on it until August 2011 and I will probably bring it in to have it checked out but would like to know what you think.
    Thanks!

ok the abttery charges to 100% now so its alright but sometimes the charger turns to a dim green for some reason and doesnt stay bright only until I unplug and plug it back in again.
in regards to the random CPU spike, here is a screenshot of activity monitor, hopefully you guys can tell me what mds is..

  • Screen sharing using high CPU!

    Hi
I have a strange issue on my Mac Mini.
I run it without a monitor as it is primarily an iTunes server but mount it via Screen sharing to my iMac.
Just FYI I am also running iStat Menu's so can easily see CPU performance etc.
If no activity on the Mac Mini everything is fine and CPU utilisation is quite low, apart from some BOINC apps that are running.
However, if there has been, not currently but has been some screen activity on teh Mac Mini then CPU is running about 60% and this is almost totally Screen Sharing!
If I 'touch' the iStat CPU menu, this high CPU falls away back to normal levels.
Something really weird is happening and i do not know what it is.
    Any ideas?
    Robin

The screensharing CPU issue is still there in Mac OS 10.8.2 :-(
(i have the problem on my mid-2011 mac-mini server)
top sorted by CPU shows clearly two "screensharing"/"Screensharing" processes eating each about 45% CPU
