SyncToy 2.1

I have over 3000 wps and doc. files that I use.  I downloaded SyncToy 2.1.  The first pair was between a flash drive(1), which is my primary creation and storage of all these files, and a second flash drive(2)that I will use as a backup.
Everything went well and the (2) drive is a perfect image of the (1) drive.
Then, for permanant storage I tried to make a second pair between (1) drive and a second HD on my computer.  When I tried this it didn't work.  SyncToy created all folders, but left most of them without the files that are supposed to be in them.
In creating this pair when Synctoy was finished some red lettering appeared and said that over 9000{can't remember what they were called}requied no action.
Since SyncToy sycn'ed two flash drives correctly, why won't it sync the primary flash drive with the second HD on my computer. I tried several time with the same result.
I do have other files already, nothing to do with the files I am trying to store with Synctoy, so would this cause the problem described.  Anyway, how to I get the files and folders on drive (1) sync'ed to the second HD on my computer.  Thanks.

Hi Texxxas,
Apparently the problem is not with SyncToy, it is with Task Scheduler. If you have had Task Scheduler work for you in the past, then I don't have an answer for that. I have never been able to get Task Scheduler to work correctly with SyncToy and a NAS drive.
I have found that for some reason it works with USB external HDD's but will not work with a network connected hard drive. The same bug exists in Win8.1 as well. However, I have since found a third party task scheduler that works perfectly with SyncToy and
my NAS drive. It is called System Scheduler by Splinterware. The free version only works when you are logged in but they have a paid version that runs as a service and will execute without being logged in. This has solved my problem.

  • SyncToy 2.1 Can't Find NAS Folder When Run From Task Scheduler

I'm using SyncToy 2.1 to keep two WIN7 computers and a Synology DS414j NAS drive in sync. I have several folder pairs configured, some between the two PC's and three between one PC and the NAS drive. I have a task set up for automatic syncing. The problem
is SyncToy can't find the destination folders on the NAS drive if it's run from Task Scheduler. If I run SyncToy manually, everything works fine. I've even tried opening the command prompt and running the exact same program Task Scheduler is running (SyncToyCmd.exe
-R), and it works perfectly. But when Task Scheduler runs the task, it fails to find the NAS folders with the following error message:
SYNC: 08/21/2014 14:12:26:140: *** Failed to execute folder pair Downloads to NAS. Could not locate folder \\DISKSTATION\Downloads\.
I've been looking for days for a solution and have not found anyone with this problem. Any ideas?

  • Can synctoy 2.1 be used on windows 8.1 64 bit computer?

can I use synctoy 2.1 to back up between 2 win 8.1 64 bit computers?

Nope.  Not unless you are on the subscription model, that is.  Before the Cloud subscriptions, Photoshop licenses were strictly platform specific.  You could ask for a platform swatch, but that involves signing a letter of destruction of the Windows versions.

  • Lightroom and SyncToy question

    Hi,
I use LR 2.2 and Synctoy 2.0 for syncing my Photo folder to external backup drive. Those that use Synctoy should know I use Echo mode = all new files are copied to backup drive, all renames in Photo folder are repeated on backup drive and all deletes in Photo folder are repeated on backup drive. Basically my Photo folder is mirrored to Backup drive.
After running Synctoy I've often noticed that it finds a bunch of images in my Photo folder that are "different" then those on my backup folder. It marks them with "changed file" status and it wants to copy them to backup folder. Now those image are from all over the place: some from A folder, some from D, some from G, some 1 month old, some 2 years old. I know for a fact I haven't been editing/changing them in LR, I may have browsed them, so I wonder why do they show as changed in Synctoy?
Does/can LR do something on its own to images? When I compare those files from Photo folder and Backup drive, I can see no difference. There for sure isn't any visual change, neither the size, they look identical to me, but Synctoy does see "some" change.
Was just wondering if there is a simple explanation or if anyone has noticed this?
    TIA,
    Mat

    Hi Hal,
yeah, I tried that test as well, same results. I just don't understand it. I compared some files again, from Photo folder and my Backup drive. The "Last Modified Date" is different and the size is also slightly different.
The original file in Photo folder has date: 02.01.2009 and 1.424.733 bytes,
while the copy in backup folder has date: 20.12.2004 and 1.424.725 bytes.
    I don't get it.
Keywords aren't written into the file when you add/change them in LR, are then? Only upon export from LR are they written. I've also tried it with keywords. Added a new keyword to 10 images and ran Synctoy, it didn't find them.
I also checked the develop module history for some changed images, there isn't anything there, only "Import 20.12.2004".
So how or why was there something changed in those files, I have no idea.
I ran SyncToy to do it's job, I just hope it doesn't happen again.
    Thx,
    Mat

  • Use Scheduled Task for SyncToy 2.1 to discontinuous network storage

I am sorry but I have absolutely no understanding of scripting and I need help with the following please.
Currently I manually run SyncToy 2.1 to work when I have my NAS available ( switched on).  Is there a way I can use Task Scheduler to automatically run SyncToy when the NAS is
available.  I appreciate that if it was always on this would be simple but I do not wish to run the NAS 24/7 for a number of reasons. but mostly the power usage for a seldom need resource.  I'm a home user syncing mainly media files for backup.
I would really appreciate some help with this!
As an aside, I note that it really does not pay to use SyncToy 2.1, whichever action, and to have too large a folder pair, it pays to select smaller folders than a Partition or a major folder like a complete (large) Music collection.

The following article has some excellent information on how to setup synctoy. Pay close attention to the conditions when synctoy stops:
in the Properties dialog, the Conditions tab lets you choose whether or not to run this task when your computer is running on battery power if you’re using a laptop/netbook.  By default it will only run when on AC
power, but you can uncheck the box if you’d rather it sync even if you’re on battery.

  • SyncToy not copying some PDF files

I'm brand new to this and set up a couple of folder pairs.  For each set, there were some PDF files that didn't get copied.  The error said that they were in use but they aren't.  I even restarted the machine and didn't open anything just
to be sure that nothing was running.  I was able to copy these manual after SyncToy had run.
Did I miss a setting somewhere?  Any suggestions for making this work?

  • Does SyncToy autostart when you boot up Windows?

I set up a Left to Right Echo File account to back up my media files between 2 hard drives on my PC. Does SyncToy auto start at windows boot up and immediately begin one-way syncing between the files I set up, or do I have to start the process

Likely there was a delay booting up and Internet Recovery kicked in and was attempting to contact Apple's servers to download Internet Recovery, which is just like Recovery HD to fix your machine, then it cancelled for some reason.
I suspect your hard drive is going to die soon, you need to backup your personal data off the machine as soon as possible.

  • Help - Need utility like Microsoft's Synctoy

Hi - I am a new Mac user (recently switched and hope to never go back...). I currently have a need to sync files across three different OS's (OS X = iMac at home, XP = laptop at home, XP Pro = workstation at work). I have been using Microsoft's Synctoy to keep files in sync between my work PC and my laptop at home. I must admit, it is a convenient utility. However, I recently purchased a .Mac subscription and have been using that environment for my critical backups (among other things). Now, I would like to sync the files on my laptop at home (XP) with my iMac. Is there an Apple utility like Microsoft's Syncytoy? I considered creating something using Apple Script or Automator, but I (frankly) don't have time (I am in the middle of a graduate thesis). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you've got a .mac account, why don't you use iDisk? If you open your .mac preferences, select iDisk, and start iDisk Syncing it will create a local folder on each Mac so you can have access to the files when not online. This also speeds things up because you are working locally and the files on your Mac get updated in the background.
Then there is the iDisk Utility for Windows XP that allows you to mount your iDisk on Windows. I've not used SyncToy, but I suspect it would work with the drive mounted by iDisk Utility for Windows XP.
And, of course, you can use the web interface to iDisk from just about any Internet connected computer with a web browser.

  • How can I manage 1 iTunes library with 2 computers (not on same network)?

I have 1 very large iTunes library in which I am always adding/deleting/editing songs and 2 computers (1 home, 1 laptop). I would like to be able to manage my library with my laptop when I am away from home but also be able to see any changes I made next time I open iTunes on my home computer. I tried home sharing but this seems to be more for computers on the same network. My library is much too big for iCloud. Someone suggested I hold shift when I open iTunes to select a library but even though I can select the library file I want, it doesn't populate iTunes with my changes (or any music for that matter). I'm running XP with the latest version of iTunes (10.7.0.21). Thanks

This describes a work/home scenario.  For home/away use, edit the library directly on the portable backup when away, then sync libraries on your return.
    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organized within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organized) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behavior has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entries and import the local content you have on that box.

  • How do I move ITunes from one computer to another

I am trying to move my ITunes from one computer to another. I downloaded ITunes on my new computer and loged in with my account information. Then I pluged my IPod into the comuter and imported all my songs. I thought that everything would come over but none of my apps did. I want to synce my IPod up with my new computer how do I do it?

Backup everything to an external hard drive with this User Tip.
Use the same process to clone the library into a new empty iTunes folder on the new computer.
Deauthorise the old box if you don't need to access protected content on it any more.
Use SyncToy from time to time, and in particular before every iTunes update, to keep the backup up-to-date.

  • ITunes for Windows freezes when importing a library. I have a large but not huge library of mostly iTunes purchased music on two authorized computers and would like to sync the files, export the library as a playlist, and import it on the other computer.

I am running iTunes for Windows 10.2.2 on Windows 7 Home. I have my iTunes library on both this computer and another authorized machine running Windows 7 Professional. I have a large but not enormous library, as I'm one of those people who doesn't pirate, use torrents, borrow from a dozen friends, or whatever other shades of gray you might imagine. It's mostly iTunes purchases with my old CD collection imported. I have started using the following technique to sync my libraries between my two authorized computers, an ability which you can probably all agree should one day be added to iTunes -- that would be different from Home Sharing, because the music would be stored locally and thus available on the road. With the added benefit of the entire library being backed up on the other machine in real-time. Anyway, when I switch from my desktop to laptop and vice versa, I use the following technique:
Connect both machines to the home network. One machine is the "Active" machine, which has most recently been used for iTunes media, purchases, ratings, etc.
On the "Active" machine, File-->Library-->Export. Save the file as "Library.xml" on the shared drive of the other machine.
Right-click "Library.xml" where it's been saved, and open another file that has two lines in it: The root path of the iTunes library on one machine and the root path of the iTunes library on the other machine.
Do a find/replace all in Notepad to make the library XML file point to where the files will be saved on the "Inactive" machine.
Run Microsoft SyncToy to synchronize the files between both music libraries; the most recent files win. This avoids copying the entire multi-gigabyte library over the network.
Open iTunes on the "Inactive" machine.
Go to Music, Select All, Delete. Keep files.
Do the same for Movies, Music Videos.
Go down to Playlists, select the top one, hold down the delete button until they're all gone.
File-->Library-->Import Playlist. Choose the "Library.xml" file you saved.
First a status bar comes up that says, "Importing library." It has the continually-scrolling progress bar, not the one that starts on the left and steadily creeps right. Then after about 30 seconds, that clears out. Wait. Typically a few minutes. Eventually a status bar will pop up saying something like, "Evaluating gapless playback information," or something like that.
The "Inactive" computer is now the "Active" computer. I can now play my library, it has all my playlists and metadata from the other machine.
Delete all the duplicate playlists named "Music," "Genius," "Purchased," and "iTunes DJ."
Well, I just upgraded to iTunes 10.2.2 a few days ago and tried to do this again like I've done it dozens of times before. Now, iTunes just goes unresponsive after the library import. It got through the "Importing library" bar to the long wait and stopped. I can still multiprocess and use other programs, but iTunes is hovering back there not responding to clicks. Task Manager doesn't seem to think iTunes is using my CPU, and I don't see my hard drive rattling. Any thoughts on why iTunes might hang up when importing a large library?
... Also, please help lobby Apple to come up with a network sync tool built into iTunes for a user with multiple authorized computers. Something different than Home Sharing so I can pull my laptop off the network and still have the synced library with me. And all my metadata changes will sync. The technique I use seems a little kludgey, don't you think?

iTunes isn't an editor. You need an app that's intended for editing audio files, like Adobe Audition (http://www.adobe.com/products/audition.html) or Audacity (free in the App Store).

  • We have a PC with iTunes that needs the hard drive reformatted. Right now, it can't connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my music to a thumb drive, then re-load when the computer is reformatted?

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting?  How do I do it?

Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.
