Synth guitar as a controller

HELLO,
anyone using a synth guitar as a controller?
trying to set up my godin
got the gi20,
were going straight in with the usb
to the computer, no soundmodule,
got it working,
last night,
going to try to set up
the sensitivity on the individual strings.
if we can get there.
thanks

Yes, I do. The Godin will play Logics synths well, but it is not much use as a MIDI controller. Not entirely the fault of the guitar or the GI-20, but the way Logic works.
You will almost definitely find a small MIDI controller such as the Evolution UE-33 useful. Lots of faders, knobs & buttons.
If you want to use the Godin as a guitar, you will need an audio interface as well. Any decent Firewire will do. I use an Edirol, but many people here prefer the Apogee Duet.

  • X-Fi Midi Synth Reverb and Chorus Controller Is

I bought an X-Fi a couple of weeks ago, and I soon realized that midi effects controllers cc9 and cc93 (reverb and chorus) didn't work with the X-Fi hardware synths. I called CL Technical support about this and this is the response I got:
"I have spoken with our testers who say that the CC9-Reverb and CC93-Chorus amounts are set in theSF2 file. That value is typically set to hit 20% at maximum CC data entry (27). To work aroundthis, you will need to use NRPNs to set the amount to a greater level, or edit the SF2 contentitself. Please let me know if this information hel
    ps.
No, it doesn't help, reverb and chorus effects in midi files are set with midi controllers #9 and #93, this is true of virtually every midi file available on the internet, including commercial midi files. CL's testers are wrong. SF2 files have embedded minimum amounts of reverb and chorus for certain patches, midi song files customize the amounts of reverb and chorus with controllers cc9 and cc93 to suit each particular song, and even change it during the song. Adding NRPN's involves editing the midi file by calculating the MSB and LSB for each desired value and adding four controllers for every channel of every song every time you want a change in the effects. Controller cc9 and cc93 have control sliders or knobs in every major audio/midi multitrack program and these require no editing. A midi synth that ignores this loses much of its realism, and this just isn't acceptable for those of us who make serious use of midi song files. I have several thousand midi files and it would take months or even years to edit them all. This is a bug that may only affect a small percentage of X-Fi users, but for those it affects, it's a major bug. From the response I received from tech support, it appears that they aren't planning to do anything about it, so I thought I would publicize the issue here and see if I can't change their minds. I drove a 20 mile round trip and paid $40 for my X-Fi and I've had to pull it out of my computer and put my Audigy back in. I'm not a happy camper at this point, but if CL is going to fix the issue, I'm willing to wait for a while because I think thye X-Fi is worth it.

Maxing everything was the first thing I tried, and no go. Still so little reverb it was hard to tell if it was working, and no detectable chorus. I even went back with Vienna 2.4 and checked my soundfont again, and all was as it should be.
Putting together a brand new sound card is a major undertaking and it's understandable if something gets missed here and there, especially as most of the designers and testers probably aren't serious musicians. It's easy to see how this one could slip past, especially if they were using Soundfonts that have reverb and chorus programmed in to some of the instruments. Everything works fine until you start varying cc9 and cc92 and nothing happens. I haven't checked because I removed the X-Fi and put my Audigy back in, but it's a good bet that none of the midi effect controllers work properly. This is a relati'vely minor issue for most users, but for serious musicians who use midi, it's major. However, I'm sure CL will fix the problem as soon as possible. I just hope it doesn't take too long because the X-Fi is a really, really good sounding card, except for this one problem.
Gi've the X-Fi another try. I had these same issues at first but now cc9 and cc92 work in Sonar4.
These controls work, its just that the reverb is very low and the chorus has to be activated. In the effect editor choose the amphitheater preset as oppose to the default for reverb as it is the most audible.
    follow these steps:
    . choose creation mode
    2. enable EAX effects and set to max
    3. select amphitheater preset for reverb
    4. activate the 5 bus buttons for chorus in master aux effects box (Front L\R, ect)
step 4 should work best for stereo setup
    This should do it.

  • Clicks and pops when running Mainstage 2 with Guitar Rig 5 in Mavericks.

**I've read that this may be unsolvable but I hope someone can help me**
    Hello everyone,
I very recently upgraded to the new Macbook Pro 15" Retina as my 2010 Macbook running Snow Leopard is on it's way to Apple heaven. This means I am now on Mavericks and **** is ******, it's my fault for not upgrading sooner so I am to blame in some respects. Here is my issue.
My set up is fairly basic:
Mainstage 2.2.2 (I can't upgrade to 3 as the synths we use are not 64bit compatible.. another nightmare due to my lack of upgrading in the past)
Axiom 64 MIDI controller via USB
Guitar Rig 5 controller via USB (audio interface)
In Mainstage we have the L output for virtual instrument parts and the R output for guitar parts. These are globally panned L and R.
The L output from Mainstage goes through the Guitar rig footcontroller out the L output through a DI and then to the mixing desk. The R output goes through the Guitar rig controller out the R output and straight to the guitar amp. Simple way to do both keys and guitar.
We never had any problems with this in Snow Leopard. With Mavericks this setup is unusable due to the clicks and pops shooting through the guitar amp. It doesn't matter whether the voume on the guitar itself is turned up or down it's still all "click POP.. CLICK pop pop click" Mainstage just seems to be sending these pops regardless if anything is being played or not.
When I ran the same session through my Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 there was no popping on the virtual instruments so I'm thinking it could be a guitar rig issue.
Can anyone help me with this? I'm sure a lot of people are finding the same thing... **** I know a lot of people are getting the pops without guitar rig involved. For now I'm going to continue to use my old Macbook but I'd LOVE to have the new one running smoothly!
    Thanks a lot!

  • OT- Can anyone tell me about these guitars (please own one!)

I am interested in anyone's personal experience with the following guitars while using Logic Studio:
    TAYLOR T3
GODIN Multiac Spectrum Series Cutaway Acoustic Electric Guitar (yes, I know that it also requires the Roland GI-20 interface)
Of course, I am also interested the the technical issues, if any, when using the Godin with the Roland processor.
    Thank you very much.

I have used the Godin with my GI-20 interface. I was very impressed with the way it handled all the Logic synths. The only reason I don't own one is that the fingerboard is designed for rock/folk guitarists & I am a classical, flamenco, lute player. Consequently I need a much wider fingerboard. That is why I had my electric/synth guitar made for me.
If you can handle the Godin's fingerboard, buy one.

  • Midi controller doesnt work with ES2

    Hi
Im using my virus TI synth as a midi controller for my soft synths.
It works just fine with my NI instruments, the midi learn functions just fine with those,
but when i try midi learn with the ES2 i cant get the virus to control any of it.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks
    digi

With the help of Bee Jay (much thanks), I figured this out. What you have to do is this
First, use the Virus TI graphic user interface to create a Remote Template. You can learn how to do this by going to pages 24-26 of the Virus Control Tutorial.pdf (read it carefully). I would suggest creating a new template titled "Logic".
In creating this template, you will need to create MIDI strings for each of the Virus' knobs (page 25-26 in the Virus Control Tutorial.pdf). I would suggest using some of the MIDI controller numbers for the ES1's parameters, which are listed on page 248 of the Logic Studio Instruments and Effects.pdf manual - if you do that, the ES1's knobs will respond to those Virus knobs for which you assigned the specific controller numbers listed for the ES1. Then you can create some more unique MIDI controller strings any extra (unassigned) Virus knobs. In any case, each of the Virus knobs has to be assigned to a unique MIDI Controller number.
After this is done, you can use Logic's Controller Assignments "learn" function to assign the virus to control the other Logic instruments. First, make sure your Virus is in Remote mode and your new "Logic" Remote Template is loaded, and open up a Logic instrument (e.g., the ES2). Now hit command-L. Logic's Controller Assignments window will appear, but you can just drag it off to the side for the moment. Now click on a knob on the ES2, then twiddle the knob you want to use on the Virus. Do that for as many knobs as you want, then deactivate the "Learn" button on the Controller Assignments window when you're done.
Then, whenever you want to control a Logic instrument which you've set up this way, you just need to put the Virus in Remote Mode and make sure you load the "Logic" Template.

  • Recording External Synth settings via midi

    Hi
I have recently purchased a Roland SH201 synth, and logic 8. I have successfully set up the synth as a midi controller (via usb) but i can't get logic to record the actual sound the synth is making, only the midi.
Now I know there's no problem with the synth as my housemate has recorded the actual audio from the synth into reason (via usb) so I assume I'm doing something wrong in logic.
Can someone PLEEEEEASE help me, I'm about to go insane...

Go to Logic Preferences->Audio->Devices and choose the Roland as your Input device.
Did you install the drivers that come with it (I just read about it on the web...)

  • Max NUmber of Instrument Tracks Due to Rewire??

I have a template set up with 28 audio objects (that were previously instrument tracks) dedicated to rewire tracks (basically 14 pairs stereo bussed to an Aux). When i try to create a new audio object and assign it to an available instrument track, and then insert a soft synth, i cannot actually play the soft synth with my midi controller. i can step enter notes by creating a sequencer track, but as far as playing it manually from my Radium 49, no dice. My transport is not showing note-on values either. But i can play my rewire tracks just fine.
Am i doing something wrong here? Is it becuase i used all of my instrument tracks to create the 14 pairs for rewire? But if i create a new track (which creates an available audio track that i convert to an audio instruement track in the instrument paramater box in the arrange window) there are over 120 available instrument tracks for me to choose from!
i'm very confused - can anyone help? how can i add more instruement tracks for me to use in addition to my rewired tracks??
    thanks

hey guys, i have a MOTU 24i interface and allen/heath board. with this setup i can record up to 24 separate "real instrument" tracks at once into my Mac Pro w/ 5GB ram and 500GB HD.
so i went to try this over the weekend for the first time and it seems that garageband limits the number of recording simultaneous tracks to 8?!!! i had 14 mics setup covering an entire band (drums, guitars, keys, vocals, etc.) only to find out that i had to narrow it down to 8 to satisfy garageband.
is this correct? why on earth they would limit it to 8 is beyond me. i have 7 mics on the drums alone!!!
any help appreciated on how to configure more tracks to record simultaneously with.
if GB cannot do this, can digital performer?
    thanks!
Apple limits GB to 8 simultaneous inputs max as a way to distinguish it, as a free app, from Logic, which does not have this limit. All of the full-featured DAWS - Logic, DP, Protools - allow many-track recording.
If you have 7 mics on drums, you might want to send them into a stereo buss in your board so they will only take up 2 tracks in GB (submixing drums is not unheard of). That brings you down to 9 tracks so if you want to record in GB, you're almost there (1 more submix and it'll work).
Beyond that, though, if you're going to want to regularly record more than 8 tracks at once, you might want to consider moving to one of the fuller-featured DAWs.

  • Logic Studio, MacBook pro, M-Audio ProFire 610, M-Audio Axiom 61

I'm just about to get the above: Logic Studio, MacBook Pro, M-Audio ProFire 610 and the M-Audio Aziom 61, and want to know if any of the above (Logic Studio and MacBook Pro excluded) are a big mistake. I've been using an Aluminium Powerbook 17" 1.33MHz, and M-Audio MobilePre USB, and an Edirol controller, with guitar rig (and Controller), and Logic Express 7.
I need a set-up that will work as well in the studio, as it does on stage. We tend to plug everything in to the powerbook at the moment, and use Reason to power the synths, guitar rig for the guitars and bass, and logic express plugins for vocals etc.
Anyone have any experience with any of the above?
    Cheers,
    Adam

    Hi Zuelito,
Please read my first paragraph again:
"I gotta RESPECTFULLY take issue with every point you bring up about M-Audio stuff, Zuelito..."
I'm not sure how you can be "slightly put off by the tenor" of my post given everything I said, with the one possible exception being my line about MOTU making crappy hardware - and that was based on personal experience. And while we're talking about the opinions of others, feel free to peruse the Unicornation board - it's full of MOTU users talking about firewire port failures and other hardware issues - so it appears neither of us is alone in our experiences
Seriously, if I was in some way brash or offensive in the way my post came off, I publicly and sincerely apologize. I really try to think about what I say (and how I say it) when posting on the 'net, for this very reason. I thought I simply stated my experience in an informative manner; again, please re-read my post - I hope it comes across as intended.
For what it's worth, I will say (even more clearly) that I've always loved MOTU products in terms of feature set; maybe that's why I've owned almost every product they've ever made! However, in my environment, I simply can't risk hardware failures, and their stuff has let me down too many times to keep rolling the dice. I will also divulge that one of their top tech support guys has acknowledged the firewire port problem. That's a shame, because they do make great stuff, conceptually. I really wish I could take a chance on that new 896mk3, but it ain't gonna happen for me; 6 dead firewire ports is enough of a failure rate for me to give up on them. To be fair, this probably isn't an issue for fixed installations, but I have to make these connections daily while on tour.
Also, I did NOT categorically state that "M-Audio stuff is better than MOTU." Again, if you re-read my post, it should be obvious that all I'm saying is I have a newfound respect for M-Audio, as of the new ProFire series. I also said in my first paragraph that I shared your opinion of M-Audio for a long time!
If this were all about M-Audio's 410 vs. MOTU's Ultralite (or other competition), we probably wouldn't even be having this discussion as I would have agreed with you - but the original poster specifically asked about the newer 610 with Logic, which is what I'm using on one of my rigs. I simply offered my personal experience.
As for drivers, I've not had any problems with M-Audio or their level of support. Just the opposite - they really seem to be on the ball and are way more communicative than other mfrs. I don't know of any other mfr. that supports each OS subrelease in detail like they do, and their development speed seems as fast (if not faster) than anyone else.
Finally, until now I've only owned a few M-Audio pieces (410, 1814), but I can state that they've been flawless. Their audio quality was not 'high end' by any stretch, but I only used them for utility purposes (writing rigs on the road, etc.). Like I said, my main studio stuff has been RME or Apogee for years, and that's the quality level I'm used to - which is why the 610 really surprised me. I also have several friends who do a LOT of touring, many of which rely on M-Audio hardware (mostly 410s). One guy's unit doesn't even have any paint left on it from road abuse - but it still works like a champ after 4 years.
So anyway, this is all just my experience. Hope it doesn't come across as anything but that
    Peace,
    Jim

  • No midi control in GB '08 with keyboard via Alesis io2, & no output via io2

The lengthy title sums up the two key issues I'm having.
I'm using an Alesis io2 USB interface, to run guitars and midi controller keyboards (goldstar MK49 & Terratec Midimaster Pro) into GB '08.
There're no problems getting the guitar into GB and my Guitar Rig 3 plugin, and no noticeable latency on monitoring via the system output (active speakers from headphone output). Until three days, ago I was also using the keyboards to successfully control software instruments in GB.
In detail, the issues I'm experiencing are:
    *1) MIDI Keyboard*
After attempting to create a new aggregated audio/midi device in the Audio Midi Setup utility, I can no longer get the keyboards to work. I get intermittent notes at random and also when using the keyboard data sliders, but mostly silence. Previously I had no problems with velocity sensitivity, note, modulation, pitch or track level control. Now, I'm getting nothing other than random notes.
It appears that GB, my MacBook or both are now unable to make any sense of the midi data they're receiving. I've deleted the aggregated device via the same utility but still no control. I've not yet found a 'MIDI reset' option in system prefs or the audio/midi utility. Any suggestions how I get my bits of gear talking to each other again?
*2) Audio output via Alesis io2*
SInce getting this USB interface I have been unable to route any audio back out of my MacBook through it; either to headphones from the built-in headphone jack, or monitors from the 'main L/R' connections. System prefs and the audio/midi utility both see the io2 as a device with 2x ins and 2x outs, but both tell me the device has no output controls.
Creating a new aggregate device didn't work, so any ideas how to resolve this one? Also, could creating this new aggregate device have contributed to my first issue?
Any advice would be gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance.

I would start by trying the i/o 2 with garageband in another user account to find out if it's a local or global problem.
Then with the alesis plugged in make sure that all your settings in the audio/midi setup utility are correct for the device.
A class compliant device means if they build the interface to a agreed upon spec it will be recognized and be able to use the apple driver (core audio). It did work because you were able to use it and change it's function when making it part of aggregate device.

  • Please recommend the best audio interface not the firebox!!!!

i am not sure if this unit is doing what i want it to do.
what audio interface are you using (firewire) to record external synth/guitar
and recording out of its audio outs to a recording device like a minidisc at the same time monitors are connected to it. The firebox is eccentric, sometimes the drivers are there in the midi audio and sometimes they arent.
which brand are you using with consistent results?
its always hit and miss with this firebox. im using OS 10.4.11 and just upgraded the new software mixer and control at its web site.
garageband has gotten so good now its the audio interface failing me.
    thanks

I use the M-Audio Firewire solo. It's super reliable and I think it's got everything you need. As long as your drivers are good, you're good to go. Just make sure that you DO NOT plug it in when the computer is on (as with all firewire products)! I ruined one that way.. then turned around and bought another one.
    Love the thing.

  • Low Performance on two macs - Audio / photo editing software

I have terrible performance with Protools, and Adobe Lightroom. I'm very frustrated about it today, so I'm just posting to see if anyone might have some info.
First: 2 computers. 1 macbook pro with 2 gigs of ram. It was the santa rosa model I believe. Using both 10.5-10.6 The other is a brand new mac mini it was the higher spec'd one with 2 gigs of ram.
In protools, I can't use even 1 track, 1 rtas with a low enough buffer to get "useable" latency. Otherwise it just dies. Like this I can't use either of these machines in a live scenario on stage. I can at least use it for mixing with high latency set. Also, I'm aware of the snow leopard / protools compatibility - no need to bother there. My laptop has a fresh install of Leopard now and fresh install of bootcamp/windows. I am recording to an external firewire drive. I don't remember the model, but I basically searched what other protools users were recommending and got that.
As for Adobe Lightroom, when I click on a slider to change a setting....I might wait 30 seconds to 2 minutes before the GUI is responsive again. I am using a Canon Mark 2. I know the images are big.
Now, I thought I'd load up Windows in bootcamp to see what kind of performance I'd get.
For Protools I could get at least a handful of tracks armed...with low latency and atleast 1 rtas per track...and no more than 2 per track. Enough for my guitar and midi controller to be armed and ready to go. I can actually record a ten track song here at least.
Lightroom windows performance: It works just fine. Sometimes there is a few second wait loading the images when selecting a new image...however, once the image is previewed/loaded I never have trouble moving the sliders to change settings.
What is up with this? Is there something with OS X that I don't understand? Do I need a Mac Pro to record more than one track at a time? I've wanted a Mac Pro for a while now....but with the way things are going, I'm afraid to buy one.

Edit....the camera that should have been listed was Canon 5d Mark 2

  • Problem with external MIDI routing has to be MainStage 2 bug

I posted a bug the other day where I was getting occasional bogus MIDI note events in one external synth while playing a keyboard that was (supposed to be only) sending MIDI data to a different external synth.
I have now performed two experiments that would seem to indicate that the problem must be caused by MainStage 2 and not by CoreMIDI or by MOTU drivers/external MIDI interfaces.
    Experiment 1:
I created a new Digital Performer sequence, enabled multi-input mode and routed one keyboard controller to one external synth and another keyboard controller to another external synth, essentially reproducing the MainStage 2 patch. Played both keyboards together for some time with no problems whatsoever. (In MainStage 2, I'd get a glitch pretty quickly)
Experiment 2: (to eliminate the possibility that Digital Performer (a MOTU product itself) wasn't doing something special)
I used Max/MSP and created two midiin/midiout connections, one representing the first keyboard controller and external synth, the second representing the second keyboard controller and external synth respectively (duh). Again, I played both keyboards for a while and everything worked perfectly, no glitches.
I have reported this to Apple several times via their feedback but have heard NOTHING back from them.
    Original bug posting
    (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2137282&tstart=0)

If I understand you correctly, I think I experienced a similar problem. However, in my case, I don't have two separate midi input devices, but rather one; and two separate external devices I am wanting to control with midi.
Brief background: I use an EWI to play various softsynths & now external synths via MS2. I also route the audio from my EWI into MS2 for additional processing and I use an external effects processor (Eventide Eclipse) for additional processing and sound manipulation. I send program changes with my EWI to change patches using MS2. My EWI transmits only on midi channel 1, which MS2 is set to receive on. Also, my Eclipse is set to receive midi data on channel 5 (a method I used to keep things separate in my all hardware rig when MOTU MTP AV was my switching device).
Initially, I thought I could just have my EWI send a program change message on channel 1, and then MS2 would send a program change message to the Eclipse on channel 5, all from the same MS2 keyboard object. It worked, but with one small glitch ... after the program change happened, and I started playing my EWI, the Eclipse began receiving my midi note information which in turn caused the Eclipse to be confused and start trying to change patches, etc. I checked the keyboard object which was not supposed to transmit on channel 1 to anything external, but I could not figure out how to set it up. Note: none of my devices are set to OMNI because I learned a long time ago, that I want to control routing and specific channels ensure their separation ... or supposed to anyway.
What I ended up doing was to create another midi object (this time the little spherical thing, not the keyboard), and assigned it to transmit on midi channel 5 and not receive on any channel. This turned out to be the solution / work around for this situation.
Another problem I am having with midi control when using MS2 as a go-between, is an issue with pitch bend information getting messed up as its sent to my external synth (Yamaha VL70m). For some reason, playing the VL70m by way of MS2, causes my EWI pitch-bend data to force the VL70m pitch-bend in the permanent down position making all notes flat. My solution in this case was to set up a direct link with MidiPipe, from my EWI to my VL70m and filter out any program changes so that I can use the MS2 to send a patch change to it, but use my EWI to play it directly. It seems to work well, and my pitch-bend is back to normal, but I am not certain (and don't know how to test) if the VL70m is now getting duplicate note on/off information with the potential of a minuscule delay from MS2 being in the path as opposed to playing direct from my EWI. It seems unnoticeable to my ears, but it's in the back of my mind.
Anyway, these are some of my midi episodes and I think it's pretty clear that Apple needs to quickly address some issues about midi handling and MS2.
Hope this helps ... and maybe we can come up with some more creative ways to deal with these "undocumented features" (to borrow a saying from the Windows world).

  • Need help to get MIDI signal

I just got Soundtrack Pro. I also just bought a Midiman Uno that is MIDI in and USB out. I plug my keyboard into that, and that into a USB hub that goes to my computer.
Soundtrack recognizes the driver for the Uno, but Soundtrack isn't getting any signal level when I get it ready to record, or any time for that matter. What should I do?

Soundtrack Pro is a audio-only app. You won't be able to record any midi data or playing soft synths with a midi controller. If you have built-in sounds in the keyboard hooked to the Uno, you won't be able to record those in STP because midi data is not audio (sound). Midi data are only numbers telling a synth which notes to play and how. If you want to record your keyboard audio out, you'll need an audio interface hooked to the audio outputs of your keyboard
