System 6 keyboard

I can remember before System 7. The iPad puts me in mind of the days before MultiFinder was incorporated into the operating system. Am I too old for these Forums?
I'm looking for a picture of the original System 6 keyboard layout (the one that was renamed "US - System 6" when the default layout changed back around 1990, '91?). I don't need the actual keyboard, though that would be fun. Just a picture or listing of the option and shift-option character assignments. Some but not all of it is the same as the current "US" (not Extended, not International or anything else); it's the "but not all" characters that I'm interested in. For example, what was the character than now comes through as the forbidden 0094 or C294? I know the Mac-Roman character set used that whole 0080-009F range, but I'm ### if I can figure out which characters they were.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

I know that Alan Wood site; I've got two different pages bookmarked already. Never occurred to me to look there, though. Unfortunately neither he nor wikipedia comes through with the specific information I need: not the character encoding-- my text editor can do that-- but the key mapping.
I've been looking at a legacy font that makes full use of the Option characters. With current key assignments, the plain option parts are still recognizably Mac, but the shift-option group ranges all over the map. I remember when those changed. Looks like I may have to look at my original information upside-down and backwards to get it sorted out. Or see if there are any really, really old Mac-related books in my garage. I threw most of them out when I retired the SE and the PowerBase.

  • How to change letter in System Keyboard?

Hi, I need to change characters in my system Keyboard.
    Confused?
The thing I need is: When I type "comma" in my real physical keyboard I want that it appears a "point" instead. In the old Mac Os09 I did using Resedit to edit the keyboard file. Is there a similar way to do this in Mac os 10.4.8.

The tool for this is Ukelele:

It's best not to change a system keyboard, but make a new one and put it in Home/Library/Keyboard Layouts.
Also if you still have your OS 9 keyboard, just add .rsrc to its name and put it in Home/Library/Keyboard Layouts.

  • System keyboard shortcuts partly failed

    Hi everyone,
Did you met this embarrassing case after a recent software upgradation that I found a part of system keyboard shortcuts failed to work as before. E.g., I could not capture the desktop screentshot when I pressed PrtSc. And I could not invoke the 'Cancel/Restart/Shutdown' window when I pressed 'Ctrl + Alt + Del' either.
Since I defined some customized key shortcuts, but this bug prevented me from enjoying the keyboard. Can you give me some suggestions?
    Thanks!

No I did not.  But I assume you are a gnome user.  If you are, any quick search of the forums and you would have found numerous threads all addressing this problem.  If you subscribe to arch-general, you also would have seen this issue arise.

  • Solaris ultra 45 System= keyboard not recognized

    Hi,
I am booting up a new ultra 45 which can not recognize the keyboard or mouse (both USB;and new). the patch level for this system is 118833-36. I have tried to connect at both front and back USB connections with no luck.
is there another patch I am missing or is this a hardware problem?
    please advice.
    thanks,

    jv,
Hi. Can you get into the BIOS with the keyboard and navigate around the BIOS options? If you can't, probably a HW issue. You may want to log a support call. Thanks.

  • OS X: boot the system, keyboard is dark, no mouse-function

OS X: start booting: no mouse-function and the keyboard is dark also, why??

Ah I see what you mean about the emergency boot drive. But as I can do repair via targeted disk mode is there anything that an emergency boot drive would give me that I currently can't do? I suppose it would tell me whether the problem is with the drive itself or something else... it does seem very odd that I can get into safe mode, yet I can't get into OS X normally even after a restore from time machine or a archive and install.
Yeah I've tried single user mode and all sorts to fix this problem, see my original post - the applecare support person didn't offer any other advice and said he would just post me some new Leopard disks (this was before I figured out how to get it to boot by pressing shift). Seriously if I try booting from the leopard DVD (either using "c" or selecting from the menu screen presented by holding down option) then it always just ends up at a black screen with the monitor in power saving mode. The only way to get the DVD to boot is by going into the menu by holding option, selecting the CD and then holding shift as it boots.

  • Dead keys in keyboard no longer working

I use "us-acentos"  keymap and since 2014-09-24 upgrade the dead keys are no longer working: typing apostrophe  followed by "e" should print "é" but instead it just prints the apostrophe.
This under X both in bash and in a graphical editor such as leafpad, geany, netbeans. In a non-X session the dead keys do not work either, an apostrophe followed by "e"  will just display a space.
Would anyone have any suggestion as to why this happened and how to correct it? Thank you.

    Follow-up:
    1) I could restore the keyboard in X with this command:
    $ localectl set-x11-keymap us pc104 alt-intl
    which creates /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf:
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "system-keyboard"
    MatchIsKeyboard "on"
    Option "XkbLayout" "us"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
    Option "XkbVariant" "intl"
    Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
    EndSection
another option that worked was to rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf.pacsave to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf, which also contained the "XkbLayout" and "XkbVariant" lines under "InputClass" (the original file had been renamed to .pacsave in February 2013). See wiki:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … on_in_Xorg
The output from localectl status now reads:
    System Locale: LANG=fr_CA.UTF-8
    VC Keymap: us-acentos
    X11 Layout: us
    X11 Model: pc105
    X11 Variant: intl
    X11 Options: terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp
So it seems that the result of an earlier upgrade was to "unset" the keyboard for X (compare with output from localectl status in original post). Why?
    2) the keyboard in console (out of X) is still not working. If I try to set it to "us-alt-intl" in /etc/vconsole.conf, it works as "us" should (no dead keys); it I use "us-acentos" some keys do not work. locale-ctl shows that "us-acentos" does exist (but not "us-alt-intl").
    Mystery.

  • Bug Report: The keyboard focus doesn't automatical...

Bug Report: When a conversation window opens, the focus doesn't automatically land in the chat entry text field.
Since the new interface for Skype was introduced officially in Skype 7.0, there is a bug with the system/keyboard focus for a new conversation window. When Skype is in "Split Window View" and each new conversation automatically pops up in a separate window, the system/keyboard focus doesn't land in the chat entry edit field. Instead, the user has to press Shift+TAB a couple of times, to move it there and reply to the chat message received. This especially problematic for screen reader users, who rely on keyboard navigation. This mainly occurs when a new conversation is started with an incoming message, but it sometimes occurs when moving the focus out of that conversation window and later back in it again (while it is still opened).
    Steps to reproduce it:
    1. From "View" menu, activate the "Split Window View", if it is not already enabled.
    2. From Tools -> Options -> IM & SMS -> IM settings, enable "Open a new window when I receive a new message in Split Window View", if it is not already enabled.
    3. From Tools -> Options -> Advanced, activate "Enable accessible mode", if it is not already enabled.
    4. Activate the "Save" button, to save the changes.
    5. Close all windows, related to Skype. You may keep only the main window opened.
    6. Tell someone to send you a chat message. When the message arrives, Move the system focus to the conversation window in question, preferably with Alt+TAB. The system/keyboard will not land in the chat entry edit field as it did in Skype 6.21 and earlier and as it should by default, but in some unknown place in the window.
    7. Move the system/keyboard focus in the chat entry edit field and keep it there.
    8. Switch to another window, preferably from another application.
    9. With Alt+TAB, switch back to the window of the opened Skype conversation. There is a chance that the system/keyboard focus will not land in the chat entry edit field as it did in Skype 6.21 and earlier and as it should do by default, but again in some unknown place in the conversation window. But that is harder to reproduce.
    Test environment:
    - Operating system: Windows 8.1 Pro N, 64-bit, in Bulgarian with all locale settings set to "Bulgarian".
    - Skype version: 7.0.0.102 for Desktop.

This is a known problem, but Skype have not given us an estimated time for a fix.
Traditionally, Skype updates have been roughly monthly, so we are due a new version sometime soon. Many of us here are hoping that is has a bunch of fixes for the UI, the focus problem being one of them.

  • More-efficient keyboard

Anyone have a way to get a better onscreen keyboard going than the QWERTY one that is stock on the iPhone? I love the FITALY (fitaly.com) keyboard on my old Palm, but that company says Apple won't let them do a system keyboard. One would like to think that a Dvorak or other non-18th century keyboard could be available among the international keyboards, but I don't find one.
And yes, I've already tried the alternatives, e.g., TikiNotes, which takes me three times as long to type on than the Qwerty.
If not, this would be a great suggestion for a new feature for Apple to incorporate.

Just to let everybody know I am now 28 years old. I first learned how to type in typing class in junior high. I was using the Qwerty layout. The only nice thing I can say about the Qwerty layout is that it's available at any computer you want to use without any configuration.
Then I looked online for a better way to type and more efficient. That's when I learned about Dvorak keyboard layout. This was about four years ago. I stuck with it for about two years. I felt my right hand was doing a lot more typing than my left hand. It felt too lopsided for me. But that's just my opinion. I went on the hunt for something better than Dvorak and I found the glorious Colemak keyboard layout.
I have been typing with it ever since. My hands are a lot more comfortable and I can type faster now. It took me a month to actually get comfortable with the keyboard layout. If you actually go to this Java applet on Colemak's website.
    www.colemak.com/Compare
You can just copy and paste a body of text and click on Calculate it will analyze the typing and compare the three different keyboard layouts. I just hope it becomes an ANSI standard like Dvorak has. I hope that happens in the future.
I just want everybody to know there is a third option out there and its great. If ever Colemak goes away I will be going back to Dvorak. I will never learn the Qwerty keyboard layout ever again.
Just wanted to give my two cents worth.

  • Virtual keyboard's context-menu: can users add items to it?

iPad's virtual keyboard has a context-menu: when you hold a finger down on the -a- key of the English keyboard, for example, a context-menu appears showing various accented/combining forms of the character -a- from which you can choose. Is there a way for users to add items to this context-menu? Could one add [ð] [u00F0, 'Latin eth'] to the [d] key's context-menu and [þ] [u00FE, 'Latin thorn'] to the [t] key's context-menu?

Unless there is a keyboard language that already supports those characters, then no. You cannot add additional options to the built-in keyboard. There are apps that extend the keyboard, one in particular is the Wolfram Alpha app. While I don't know if it supports the characters you are looking for, it does have an extensive variable based keyboard for input in addition to the system keyboard.

  • Keyboard shortcuts in Adobe Photoshop

Keyboard shortcuts in Adobe Photoshop are not working. Shortcuts set up within Photoshop will not work at all. If I try to add application shortcuts through the keyboard and mouse system preferences I get an error message saying keyboard shortcuts cannot be added to Photoshop. I thought I just had a conflict with a system keyboard shortcut, but even when I turn them all off, I get the same results. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated...

The suggestion to look on the Adobe site lead to the solution. This is the best answer from Adobe:
Solution 1: Bypass the keys' default OS-level commands.
Note: Use this solution only if your keyboard has a key labeled Fn.
To make Mac OS interpret F1, F2, and so forth as function keys instead of as OS-level command keys, hold down the Fn key when you press a function key. For example, in an Adobe application that uses F1 as a keyboard shortcut, hold down Fn and press F1.
You can also make Mac OS interpret F1, F2, and so forth as function keys by default. (If you do so, then you can still perform those keys' OS-level commands by holding the Fn key when you press them.) If you want to make this change, then do the following:
    1. Choose Apple Menu > System Preferences.
    2. Click Keyboard & Mouse.
    3. Click the Keyboard tab.
    4. Select the option Use All F1, F2, Etc. Keys As Standard Function Keys.
    5. Quit System Preferences.

  • Missing characters keyboard

    Hi,
i can't find mathematics operators such as , , exc. Is there a way to write them by keyboard without externals apps?

Most people use external apps for this, there are quite a few devoted to it.  But if that is not satisfactory for you, you could try to create keyboard shotcuts for them (settings > general > keyboard I think).
iOS 8 will allow apps that can customize the iOS system keyboard.

  • How to remove Emoji keyboard from Add New Keyboard?

I already remove the App ... but the keyboard still work and some symbol stay together  .. they change into faces .. dose anyone know how to completely remove this keyboard??? remove it from Add New Keyboard...

I think you are missing the point here. There is no known problem with the keyboard and it's functionality on the iPhone. You do not need to remove the keyboard to fix it. I have it installed and use it, it does not make symols appear when using other English keyboards. If you are seeing symbols entered unintentionally there is a problem with your iPhone's software. To see symbols you must add the Emoji keyboard to the keyboard list. Even then you must select this keyboard when typing a message and physically select the icon you want. It may be possible if you have a different keyboard selected, other  than US English, that has some built in short cuts for symbol. The US English keyboard does not.
If you jailbroke and modified the iPhone's software in any way it may have messed up the keyboards functionality. I suppose any app you installed to enhance keyboard function may have effect it, but I don't believe Apple would allow it intentionally. Any chat app you use may come with it's own keyboard, changing the system keyboards will probably not fix them. Restore will fix any software issues the iPhone may have although if caused by an app it may come back when it is installed. Restore will erase media files which are not included in the iPhone backup files.
Discussing jailbreak procedures of iPhones here is prohibited and I do not recommend it to fix any issue. I only mention it since some people have problems with iPod/iPhones after they have jailbroke them but fail to mention it in their initial post. It gets futile trying to help someone with a very rare issue such as this and after many attempts to fix it you are told the iPhone is jailbroke which caused the problem.
Again the best fix here is to Restore it back to a clean iOS install using a back up. If it still does it Restore it as new and add apps till you see the problem appear.

  • Can't change the keyboard layout in Xorg

I tried the different possibilities in the wiki to change the keyboard layout in X. setxkbmap does work, but I'd like to keep the settings across reboots. I tried the two methods in the wiki, here are my config files:

In your .xinitrc file put setxkbmap yy & (yy=country code for example de) before it executes your de/wm.

  • Keyboard Layout files directory ?

    Hi all,
I recently got an english/arabic keyboard. I've noticed a slight layout issue with the "Arabic-PC". It appears the best of the default arabic layouts. I can easily correct thing with using Ukelele. The issue is I'm unable to locate the Arabic-PC layout file to load and use as a template with Ukelele.
Any idea where the default layout files are kept ?
    Rick

The issue is I'm unable to locate the Arabic-PC layout file to load and use as a template with Ukelele.
These files are not usable -- that's why when you download Ukelele it comes with a folder called System Keyboards that contains the templates. Unfortunately Arabic-PC is not included in that folder.
It's possible others have already done what you need. See if this note helps at all:
