System 9.2 to Tiger

My old iBook G3 (graphite) is running system 9.2 and I would like to replace it with Tiger. Everytime I inserted the install disk (Tiger - received from Apple), the system displays the message that the inserted disk is not initialized and ask me if I want to initialize it. I tried so many time without success.
Is the drive not capable reading the DVD or the drive is defective?
Any solution or suggestion to solve the problem?

Here are images of the Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, that must be used.
Is that what you are using?
If not, Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Scrutinize this item Panther On eBay, very carefully, and if in doubt, ask questions of the seller before purchasing.
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version..

What is the most recent APPLE system that will run Tiger server?

    Hi Steven,
I highly suspect by deduction that since the latest 10.4 Server was 10.4.7, that these would be the latest since they came with 10.4.7 client at least...
    Mac Pro - MA356LL/A - MacPro1,1 - A1186 - 2113
    Mac Pro - BTO/CTO - MacPro1,1 - A1186 - 2113
But if you have 10.4.0 or 10.4.3 Server then likely A Late 2005 G5 would be the latest.

  • Optimizing system performance hangs during Tiger install

When I try to install Tiger on my Powermac G3 B&W it gets to optimizing system performance and hangs there for hours and when I reboot it starts to install off disk 2 and it hangs again at optimizing system performance part of the install. What do I need to do to fix this because I need to get the computer going

*Hi Colton, Welcome back* to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
Were you using the puter during Install—that's a no-no.
Follow standard precautions as listed all over the forums:
    Quit all apps
Unplug all except KB and Mouse.
Repair Disc via Install Disc. Repair Permissions via HD. (That one receives some debate but it's quick.)
    etc.

  • How to Run the NEW "System Info Command" in Tiger ?????

I am new to Applescript and was wondering if someone could help me on how to run the new "System Info Command"?
    Thanks!!!

The "system info" command that red_menace uses above is the new system info command that's mentioned on the web page you referenced. However, red's example only displays the "long user name" and the "AppleScript version" in the dialog.
The entire system info record actually contains all of these items, each of which you can access just like red_menace shows you in his example:
    AppleScript version
    AppleScript Studio version
    system version
    short user name
    long user name
    user ID
    user locale
    home directory
    boot volume
    computer name
    host name
    IPv4 address
    primary Ethernet address
    CPU type
    CPU speed
    physical memory
    Steve
PS - if you switch Script Editor over so the bottom pane displays the "Event Log" you'll see the entire system info record displayed in the log when you run red_menace's script.

  • "You must restart your system" error when installing Tiger on a new drive

While trying to install Mac OS 10.4 from the install DVD the install stops during the "Basic Install ..." phase and I get a gray screen that says "You must restart the system by pressing the power button ....." shown four different languages. I restart installation over and over, it never gets past that first section. Gray screen, panic stop.
I installed a new 200 GB Maxtor DiamondMax Ultra ATA/100 hard drive in my system. The system already had a 120 GB Maxtor. The 200GB is configured as the master and the 120GB as the slave. I have a new SIIG Ultra ATA/133 2 Channel PCI Interface (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/SIIG/SCMP4A12/) also installed.
    Here's my configuration.
Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics) 1GB RAM, Mac OS 10.4.8
    - SIIG Ultra ATA/133 2 Channel PCI Interface
    - IOGEAR Hi-Speed USB 2.0 / FireWire 400 (1394A) Combo PCI Card
    - MAXTOR STM3200820A (200 GB drive, master)
    - MAXTOR 6B120P0 (120 GB drive, slave)
I tried disconnecting the 120GB hard drive, leaving just the 200 GB on the bus and I get the same gray screen a few seconds into the basic OS install. Tried removing the IOGEAR USB 2.0 card, same message. Since Mac OS X was originally installed on the 120GB, I can restart Mac OS 10.4.8 from that drive and use that drive. Once restarted on the 120GB drive I see the 200 GB drive, Disk utilities see it just fine, drive reports no error in the Disk Utility. The 200 GB disk even formats, I see it on my current MAC OS 10.4.8 as the second drive. I just want to get Mac OS installed on the 200 GB.
If you have seen this gray screen before installing on a 200 GB Maxtor or have any insight I would be most appreciated.
PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphics) Mac OS X (10.4.8) SIIG Ultra ATA/133 2 Channel controller, 200GB Maxtor

    Hi Frank,
With all that additional third party hardware it will be difficult to get a proper installation. You can either take out ALL 3rd-party hardware (just leave the 200 GB hard disk in there, but also take out the 120 GB) or you can simply clone the system from the 120 GB disk to the 200 GB disk. You can do that with utilities such as Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • MPEG2 codec not working in Final Cut Pro on Mac OSX Tiger

We have been using the File-export-Quicktime Conversion-MPEG2 codec for exporting of files from Final Cut Pro to DVD Studio Pro. On the new mac system that was just bought, the option does not show up.
Currently the system is running Quicktime Pro 7.1.2/ FCP 5 and DVD Studio Pro 4 and it is a new mac system running Mac OSX Tiger.
This problem has happened before on a mac running on an older system, but that was solved by reinstalling FCP and then DVD Studio pro and making sure that the QT Pro was of the latest version.
Right now, we have reinstalled everything the same way, tried installing DVD Studio Pro after, we have also done a full software update of the software over the net.
The codec is still not working, all the macs in the office are supposed to be upgraded to Mac osx tiger, but right now we can't do so, cos then we wouldn't be able to burn any DVDs.
    Please help, thanks.

The installation of QT 7 is the culprit behind the missing MPEG-2 Export Component. But during upgrades, it doesn't always get rid of the file ... probably what happened on your older system when you upgraded to QT 7 or Tiger. Either the new system came with QT 7 preinstalled, therefore not including the Export Component, or if it was upgraded, the upgrade missed it.

  • Will I be able to upgrade my old Tiger?

Can you please help me out? I got my wonderful Mac G5 exactly 6 years ago this month, so it's now pretty much an antique -- though it still runs like brand new! My current system software is still Tiger ... OS 10.4.11 to be specific. My Mac is also NOT an Intel, it's a PowerPC G5 (3.0), with 2 GHz speed, and two DDR SDRAM memory cards of 256 MB each, for a total of 512 RAM. I would LOVE to upgrade to Leopard (finally!!), but need to know if it's impossible at this point. I know you need an Intel processor for Snow Leopard ... but what about just plain old "Leopard"? Can I at least upgrade to that? And then ... my next question is can I buy an upgrade that will take me all the way up to 10.5.8? Or do I have to buy several versions of Leopard in order to upgrade one after another? (The reason being that I now have a 2 TB external harddrive that won't mount to the desktop of this Mac. I'm being told during the software install that it requires 10.5.8 to do so.)
I was also told a few months ago (by someone at MacMall, if I remember??) that I need to purchase two 512-RAM memory cards in order to upgrade to Leopard, but just haven't had time to research that. Was he correct? Is that all I need to do before the Leopard software will work on my system? I simply can't afford to go out and buy a brand new Mac just yet ... maybe next year. But meanwhile, there are so many things I'm encountering on the internet now (for example) that I can't open or run, due to my old software. It's frustrating!
One more thing ... once I upgrade to Leopard (if possible!), will I also then need to purchase a separate upgrade for all of the iLife software packages? Will any of the old iLife run at all, using Leopard?
Thanks for any help you can give me!

    Hi there!
but need to know if it's impossible at this point. I know you need an Intel processor for Snow Leopard ... but what about just plain old "Leopard"?
Yes it is, but I'd highly recommend more RAM, (Memory).
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.
my next question is can I buy an upgrade that will take me all the way up to 10.5.8? Or do I have to buy several versions of Leopard in order to upgrade one after another? (The reason being that I now have a 2 TB external harddrive that won't mount to the desktop of this Mac. I'm being told during the software install that it requires 10.5.8 to do so.)
Once you get Leo, you can upgrade for free to the current 10.5.8.
The 2 TB Drive is another problem, 10.4.x should do it, did you format it yet?

You really need more RAM, I suggest maxing it out.
So we know more about it...
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...
    Hardware Overview:
Machine Name: Power Mac G5 Quad
    Machine Model: PowerMac11,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 4
    CPU Speed: 2.5 GHz

Depends which versions you have already, many earlier versions do run fine in Leo/10.5.

  • Illustrator CS11 still won't open in Tiger

I'd appreciate any thoughts or ideas. I've scoured through these posts and in other forums for a solution, but nothing works. I get this from the report but have no idea what it means...Exception:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) Codes:  KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000006. I've updated the OS, updated Illustrator, disabled all but the system fonts, deleted Illustrator preference settings, repaired permissions, deleted .lst files and did shift/command/alt to reset prefs. Did one thing at a time, didn't work. Did everything at once, still didn't work. I have an iMac G5 I just got used with system wiped clean and Tiger freshly installed. Illustrator didn't work even before I updated the OS. I originally had CS on an eMac, transfered everything to an iMac w/intel duo/Tiger and now to the G5 iMac. All of the CS ran perfectly on the eMac and the intel iMac, but only Illustrator is giving me problems on the G5 iMac.  Thanks in advance.

  • External Drive Partition as System?

I have 3 Hard Drives now, and a problem.
One 7200 RPM internal 100 GB HDD. One 7200 USB External 160 GB HDD. And one 5400 25 GB HDD.
Problem: Originally I was going to split the internal 100 GB into two system drives (Panther & later Tiger) and use the 160 external for active data & the 25 GB for storage. I ended up using the whole 100 Internal for one system and was going to partition the external to put another system on part of it. However, OS X won't allow me to install a system to the external. It says that the PC can't start up from this drive.
Is there a way around this? If not, is there a fast way to partition the 100 GB internal and transfer the system & user data that I just installed into it. Or must I erase it ? I still have my old system on the 25 GB HDD.
    Sawtooth AGP 1 GHz Sonnet/ Encore G4 512 GB RAM Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    AGP 350 MHz G4 512 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Can't boot your computer from a USB drive. Buy a Firewire enclosure and put the drive into a Firewire enclosure. You can then partition it and install OS X on one of the partitions and be able to boot from it.
You can install OS X on a USB drive, but in your case it may be that the drive is not formatted Mac OS Extended but may instead be formatted MSDOS or plain HFS.
Partitioning a drive will erase all the data on the drive.

  • Can't install Tiger using full retail disk(DVD)

I have a system that should support Tiger and I have a retail Install Disk(black face w/ big X). After inserting the disk, clicking "install", giving appropriate password, then clicking "restart", I can't get past the grey window with Apple Logo. Trying to start using "C" key doesn't work nor does selecting the Install Disk after using Option Key during Start-Up. What's the matter with my machine or software? It's a Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver) running OS X 10.2.8. It's a 933 Mhz PowerPC and has 768 mb of RAM. Boot Rom info is 4.3.3f2, Darwin Kernel Ves. 6.8. Do I need a firmware update and ,if so, how can I get it?

Is there a minimum Mac OS for the 107D ? OSX 10.4 should be OK but I do remember OSX 10.4.6 being a minimum requirement for a lot of the Pioneer drives when I looked to upgrade years ago. This was enough to put me off upgrading.
For OS Boot capability, the drive needs to be Apple Supported. While almost any DVD drive will work in the Mac, only a few can be used to boot it. ie. Under Disc Burning in the ASP, does it not need to show as "Apple Supported" rather than just "Yes".
[This link|http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg25218.html] indicates it boots OS9 so I would think it would also boot OSX. Aren't many early generation G4 Superdrives basically Pioneer drives under a different label?
Pioneer usually doesn't supply firmware updates for Apple computers. There are instructions on how to use the PC updaters to install on Macs with DVRFlash but it's moot if it is really necessary.

  • System maintenance/optimization

What the best system maintenancep app for tiger? I used System Opitimizer X on panther and i just upgraded to tiger a week ago and when i type in text boxes now the text lags a bit behind the key stroke. And yes I know the whole "well osx maintains its self and scripts at 3-5am" speal.

    Hi, Kevin.
    1. You wrote: "What the best system maintenancep app for tiger? "See my "Maintaining Mac OS X" FAQ. It covers my advice on "regular maintenance" and dispels some common "maintenance myths."

2.1. Check System Preferences > Universal Access > Keyboard and assure Slow Keys is Off.
2.2. You might also want to check Activity Monitor to see if some process is consuming high CPU. See also my "Tuning Mac OS X Performance" FAQ for a variety of troubleshooting and optimizing tips regarding Mac OS X performance.
2.3. Finally, you might also want to note what you mean by "type in text boxes." For example, in Web forms, specific applications, etc. The more specific you can be concerning the circumstances under which the problem occurs, the better.Good luck!
