System 9 HD space troubles

Hi, I recently posted a question and marked it as answered but then realized the problem persists.
I installed system 9.1 on a 7500. The drive was completely reformatted using os 9 disk utility , so it was completely empty.
I started up using the CD and installed the system with no problems what so ever. Theoretically, this fresh installation only takes up about 300 mb of the 1gb of disk space available.
The recently installed system starts up fine, but when you go to "Get Info", it states that the disk space used is 800 MB and only 200MB is available. I opened memory control panel thinking that VM was the problem, but it was set up to only 1 MB more.It even allowed me to increase VM to 800MB more, even though Get Info stated that I only had 200MB.
So I turned VM off, and when I restarted, "Get Info" displayed the right information. The system files took up about 300MB and had 700 MB free space.
I was going to keep VM off, but then I started experiencing extremely slow network speeds (i.e 16bytes-sec), so I turned on VM again and the network problems went away.
Thinking I had a corrupted system, I wiped the drive yet again, and installed from another copy of 9.0. I get the same problem. I even found my old copy of 7.6, installed it, and still get that problem.
I really don’t understand what is going on, maybe a component has been damaged? I’ve installed the system many times before without problem. I don’t believe it’s the hard drive, because when I install the system on another drive I still get that problem. When I startup from the CD and use get info on the drive it displays the information correctly.
Additionally, I kept a copy of the old system software I had installed on a CD. To see if the old system had the same problem, I copied it back to the same drive after formatting it again and it doesn’t have the problem.
To sum up, I only get the problem when trying to install a new system, any version, (7.6, 9.0 or 9.1). Even if I wipe the drive, zap the PRAM, or Reset the CUDA switch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I recently posted a question and marked it as answered but then realized the problem persists.
Hi, you've got me confused now... the solved post seemed where was that 600MB discrepancy, which was answered by more than one person iirc !?
Perhaps I'm not seeing what the problem is now, subject says disk space, but I really only see numbers about slow network!
To see if the old system had the same problem, I copied it back to the same drive after formatting it again and it doesn’t have the problem.
Are there Extentions/Control Panels set in one and not the other?
Are there CP settings that affect Memory/Disk Use?
BTW, a 1 GB HD for anything but a stripped down OS9 can be a real problem

  • SYSTEM table space is critical

    Hi,
Generally we will not add any datafiles for UNDO table space because it is oracle managed tablespace. For SYSTEM table shall I add datafile if it reaches threshold value or not?
    Regards,
    ARNS.

    Hi,
Normally there is no need to increase the SYSTEM table space. The SYSTEM tablespace should only contain system-relevant data (such as the Oracle Dictionary). If you do not specify a 'Default Permanent Tablespace' when you create the database, the SYSTEM tablespace automatically assumes this role.May be this is happening in your case.
The size of the Oracle Dictionary in the SYSTEM tablespace stabilizes over time. The AWR (Automatic Workload Repository) in the SYSAUX tablespace also becomes relatively fixed in size after a certain time, depending on the retention period. The SYSTEM and SYSAUX tablespaces therefore remain relatively stable in terms of size in the longer term.
Application data, on the other hand, is not stable, and usually grows in size. If user data is stored in the SYSTEM or SYSAUX tablespaces, these two tablespaces may continue to grow in an uncontrolled manner. Time-consuming reorganization is then required at a later stage to correct this.
If non-system database users use the SYSTEM tablespace to save their data, this may also cause the database performance to degrade. The following security problem also arises: If non-system database users store their data in the SYSTEM tablespace, the entire space in the SYSTEM tablespace may be occupied, which means that the database can no longer function. In terms of system availability, you should therefore always ensure that a tablespace other than SYSTEM or SYSAUX is defined as the special Default Permanent Tablespace.

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

The space used by the schema on system tablespace is not coming back.

    Hi user509593!
Adding objects to a tablespace requires space in that tablespace. This space is managed in segments and extents. If an extent is fully used (that means 100 % usage) a new extent will be added to a segment. Oracle uses a mechanism called "High Water Mark" to mark the last used extent.
Your problem is that oracle don't set this High Water Mark back if you are dropping objects from a tablespace. Once an extent is marked as it it retains marked as used.
    Before Adding Objects:
    u = used Extent
    x = free Extent
    | = High Water Mark
    uuuuuuxxxxx
    ...........|
    After Adding Objects:
    uuuuuuuxxxx
    ............|
    After dropping objects:
    uuuuuuuxxxx
    ............|
The only chance to get your "unused" space back is to reorganized your tablespace. But before you reorganize something please read the documentation to know all about the costs and traps that comes with reorganization.
    Hope this help!

  • System prefs .mac trouble

    Kind of wierd....
When I open system prefs and click on the .mac area. My name is right but the password is wrong. When I change the password and hit enter it changes to the correct amount of dots hiding the password. However if I click on advanced or something it instantly changes the password back to whatever and has login troubles. I go back to the window with the username and password and its not the correct password (has way to many letters) as expected.
How can I get it to delete the old (although not created by me) password and hold the new password in this area so it will sync properly. Thanks!

    Hello John.
This is a security feature - more dots are shown than text and/or numbers entered for the correct password and doesn't mean your password has been changed.
If this is an existing password, you can't change your .Mac account password from the .Mac System Preferences.
Can you access your .Mac account information via the .Mac website?

  • File system used space monitoring rule

All, I'm trying to change the way OC monitors disk space usage. I don't want it to report on nfs filesystems, except from the server from which they are shared.
    The monitored attribute is FileSystemUsages.name=*.usedSpacePercentage.
I'd like it to only report on ufs and zfs filesystems. I've tried to create new rules using the attribures:
    FileSystemUsages.type=ufs.usedSpacePercentage
    FileSystemUsages.type=UFS.usedSpacePercentage
    FileSystemUsages.type=zfs.usedSpacePercentage
    FileSystemUsages.type=ZFS.usedSpacePercentage
But I don't get any alerts generated on system which I know violate the thresholds I've specified.
Has anybody successfully set up rules like these? Am I on the right track? do ufs/UFS/zfs/ZFS need to be single or double quoted? Documentation with various examples is non-existent as far as I can tell.
    Any help is greatly appreciated
    Tim

do you get any answers for this question? It seems like OEM12c has file system space usage monitoring setup for nfs mounted file systems, however I could not find a place to specify the threshold for those nfs mounted file sytems except root file system. does anybody know how to setup threshold of nfs mounted file systems(Netapp storage)? thank you very much

    Hi Roberto
we are having memory dumps TSV_TNEW_PAGE_ALLOC_FAILED for queries.
I checked in trx.ST22 and I forwarded those parameters to the Sys. administrator:
"[...]If the error persists, ask your system administrator to check the
    following profile parameters:
    o  ztta/roll_area            (1.000.000 - 15.000.000)

usual amount of roll area per user and internal mode
    o  ztta/roll_extension       (10.000.000 - 500.000.000)
Amount of memory per user in extended memory (EM)
    o  abap/heap_area_total      (100.000.000 - 1.500.000.000)
Amount of memory (malloc) for all users of an application

one server, temporary bottlenecks may occur.
Of course, the amount of memory (in bytes) must also be
available on the machine (main memory or file system swap).
           Caution:
The operating system must be set up so that there is also
enough memory for each process. Usually, the maximum address
           space is too small.
Ask your hardware manufacturer or your competence center
           about this.
In this case, consult your hardware vendor

  • Logic 9 "disc too slow"  2 TB drive for recording audio on Mac pro tower, lots of system HD space 6 gigs ram?????

I purchased a Mac pro tower in 2008 it has a 320 GB system drive with lots of room left I have 2 500 GB drives and just purchased a new 2 TB 7200 RPM drive just to record from Logic onto it. I have 6 GB of Ram. I have been having this problem for years and I'm getting quite sick of it!.. I just set up a new 24 track project and I'm recording into logic via firewire with my Presonus firestudio and 2 digimax FS units at 44.1k and cant even record a few songs without it stopping in the middle of recording. This is sooo frustrating. Imagine when the band comes up with something cool and asks me to play it back and walk up to my $4,000 mac with my $500 worth of Logic to see it say Disc too slow!. I have seen this problem on many forums. Mac needs to fix this!. It makes me want to make a youtube vid of me burning my Mac with lighter fluid in the yard!. I purchased the "best of the best" at the time and Logic wont even work on a brand new Mac pro properly!?.. Cmon Apple help me out here???

Now that I've had time to stew over your comments. I do appreciate what you are saying however there should be another way to remedy this problem without having to purchase anything (ie in the software or an update, new version from apple). I ran a recording studio for Several years. I also did put a lot of thought and research into purchasing my Setup and had many compliments on the sound quality. What I'm saying is that Logic 9 should have no problem functioning on my computer. I think mac has made a poor product. I bet if I purchased the Pro Tools equivalent to Logic 9 that i could record 24 channels till the cows come home and get no errors. What I need to know is if there is something that I havent tried in my settings or software that can fix this. I think 6 gigs of Ram should be more than enough to work with. Here is what Apple has to say:
    Minimum System Requirements
    2GB of RAM (4GB recommended).
Display with 1280-by-768 resolution or higher.
    OS X v10.6.8 or later.
Minimum 3.4GB of disk space. (19GB of optional content available via in-app download).
So why should I have to purchase any Ram when it's supposed to work on only 3.4 gigs?... That's why your answer frustrated me. I meant no personal insult. I just think there has to be a better answer out there. I do appreciate your input though .

your dock preferences are likely corrupt.
delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and log out/in. your dock, spaces and exposé will be reset to the defaults.
but I wouldn't give up on spaces because of this glitch. it should now work fine.

  • Smb/cifs file system authentication name TROUBLE!!!!

I have a MacPro inside the domain group with Windows-based machine and Windows Server 2003.
Every time I try to connect to windows machine the window pop up with smb/cifs file system authentication& Where You have to fill in workgroup or domain name, name and password. So workgroup or domain name is ok (correct), the password is that you type every time ( but its ok too), but the NAME is wrong. Every time NAME is the same ( I try to change it every single day). I could find no a single article or help where the system store that NAME
My question is that: How on earth can I change that NAME or where it could be changed, and why some times when I try to connect I instantly get shared folders (on some machines) then on others never and you have to type the NAME and PASSWORD every single time.
Thanks a lot for any help.

Not sure if you noticed this but this is the wrong forum for this issue. You are in the iPhone network section. Perhaps go to the OS X Networking board and try posting again.
As a side note you could try using a program called Supinfo Share Manager which you can get from http://www.labo-apple.com/SupinfoShareManager201.zip
It can store info for favorite smb shares such as sharepoint, username, password and such. Might help.

  • Performance impact due to IO r/w on system table space

I see lot of IO on our system tablespace/datafiles always even though there is negligible user activity on the database? What could be the possible cause for this?
Because of this, the server is getting lot of IOWAITS.
    Any suggestions please? Thanks.

There are two things here, first AWR is valid only for 10g, and second, so the only most suitable monitoring tool you have is the classical Statspack.
On the other hand if you don't have a temporary tablespace there will be no error, but your system will be used for temporary purposes, which is a very bad practice, as you have seen. I reccomend you, once you have detected this issue, create a temporary tablespace and make sure all users are defined to point temporary segments to that temp tablespace.
