System added number after computer name

I recently noticed that the system has added a number in parens after my computer name, ie: MyMac (2). I'm sure there is a simple answer, and it isn't harming anything, it is more of a curiosity. If anyone knows why this would happen, please let me know. I have multiple macs in the house with me as the admin, but they all have unique names to identify them.

That generally happens when there is another computer on the network that has the same name. If all other Macs in the house have unique names, then it's probably just fluke.

  • Number after computer name

I am using Apple Remote Desktop on a Mac Pro to administer a Macbook Air.
When the Air joins the network or wakes up from sleep, ARD sees it as a new machine with the same name, so it adds a serial number in parentheses to the name (e.g. MyMbAir becomes MyMbAir(1), then later MyMbAir(2), etc.).
What is causing this behavior and how can I solve it?

    Cheers,
    MB

This is really annoying, as it not only "appears" in *my* copy of ARD as an admin, but it *LITERALLY* changes the machine name in the remote computer, such that I have to connect, go to ITS Sharing area in System Preferences and manally delete the stupid (#) entry after its name.
As more and more of my administered users move to laptops, this started, so the idea of going to/from wireless seems the best explanation, although so does the sleep idea in other threads.
I really wish ARD had better support (and an iOS version too!), b/c this is still relevant over a year later...
Thanks to you both for at least explaining why this keeps happening (and why I might as well forget about playing whack-a-mole with (#) entries on every managed system)!

  • Random characters after computer name

    Hello,
We have a new issue with our agent deployment since we use MDT to deploy our workstations.
When computer register to ZCM some random characters appear after computer name, for example:
    Computer name: corporate001
    ZCM computer name: corporate001-741132927c2e6f41b5569a9f9409b983
    Do you have an explaination?
ZCM Agent is automatically installed after deployment through a .vbs script.
    cscript ZCMscript.vbs
    Code:
    Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
    objShell.ShellExecute "PreAgentPkg_AgentCompleteDotNet.exe", "-q " & "-x"
    strComputer = "." ' local computer
    strProcess = "Setup.exe"
    Do Until isProcessRunning(strComputer,strProcess)
    WScript.Sleep(5000)
    Loop
    Do While isProcessRunning(strComputer,strProcess)
    WScript.Sleep(5000)
    Loop
    WScript.Quit 0
' Function to check if a process is running
    FUNCTION isProcessRunning(BYVAL strComputer,BYVAL strProcessName)
    DIM objWMIService, strWMIQuery
    strWMIQuery = "Select * from Win32_Process where name like '" & strProcessName & "'"
    SET objWMIService = GETOBJECT("winmgmts:" _
    & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" _
    & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
    IF objWMIService.ExecQuery(strWMIQuery).Count > 0 THEN
    isProcessRunning = TRUE
    ELSE
    isProcessRunning = FALSE
    END IF
    END FUNCTION

Yes, the random number is the "Device GUID".
In your Example there would already be a device called "corporate001" in your zone.
The GUID is added since there cannot be two devices with the same name.
There are reconciliation rules that determine "matches".
Most likely, your rules rely upon MAC and/or SN and this changed instead of relying upon Workstation Name.
    No one way is "Correct".
It really comes down to what works for you.
Most likely a tweak of the rules to rely more upon "Workstation Name" may work best for you since I suspect your devices are in a domain if using MDT, which means the names are unique.

  • Aperture appends (Number) to computer name in the import pane

I keep seeing a weird issue on two separate Macs after upgrading to Yosemite/Aperture 3.6.
When I open the Import pane, Aperture keeps adding a ( + Number + ) to my computer name, i.e.:
    MacBook Pro (6)
    iMac (3)
Has anyone else seen this issue and found a way to resolve it?
    Thank you.

  • Authentication popups after computer name changed to computer record name

    Hi
I'm not sure if anyone else is facing this issue, but I have been unable to find anything in the forums.
I have setup a number of client machines on Lion Server, all using 10.7.4. I used WGM and Remote Desktop to make some changes and deploy software
Since then, I have been getting the following authentication popup on all client machines (twice after login, and then every 30 mins or so afterwards):
Mac OS S wants to make changes. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this.
The changes made prior to this happening were:
    - Overplay VPN installed (using RD pkg install)
    - Adobe CS 5.5 installed (using Adobe Enterprise Deployment Tool and RD package install)
    - Evernote installed (using RD copy)
    - Set computer name to computer record name (From WGM > Computer Groups > Preferences > Options)
I have now removed all the installed software from one machine, and log in as administrator, unbind the machine, rename the computer manually to the record name, rebind the computer.
As far as I can see, I have reverted all changes one at a time, and am still receiving the admin password requests when logged in as a network user.
The only machine that seems to be ok, is the one where the name change to computer record name was unsuccessful.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this issue?
    Thanks
    Suraj

Issue resolved. It turns out none of my changes caused the issue as much as Google Chrome Autoupdates. The new version constantly checks for updates which makes clients on Lion Server go haywire. Solution to turn off auto-updating:
    Open a Terminal window:
    defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0
    Relaunch Chrome.

  • System Image Utility- update computer name file?

Is there any way to update the computer renaming list after an image is created? For instance, you have an existing image you want to install on new computers. Do you need to recreate the image just to pull in the updated list of computer names/mac addresses?
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Did some looking around and can maybe answer my own question. It appears that the naming list that you point System Image Utility to is converted to a .plist called sharingNames.plist located inside your newly created .nbi at install.dmg/etc/. You can edit it with the PropertyList editor to update names or it seems to work too if you replace the sharingNames.plist with once from a newer image with an updated name list.
On the other question about the 10.4.9 image not completing, I tested that again with the log on and saw the failure was due to not enough disk space even though there's plenty. Setting filtering to specific machines made no difference so I must have dreamed that up. In my case, I'm target booting a ibook g4 to an intel machine and it fails. I can target boot the same ibook to a ppc machine and image creation is successful so I guess you can't mix the intel and ppc. It did work target booted to an intel machine if I used Disk Utility to create an image off the target booted ibook, then pointed SIU to that image as the source instead of the target booted ibook.

  • EM not working Properly after computer name change

    Hi Friends,
i hav 10gr2 DB, everything was fine.
last week my computer name changed, and EM stops to work.
so i reconfigure EM through command line.
after that EM started, but when go to 'Performance' or any other tab in browser.
its asks for login and shows 'oldcomputername:orcl:1521' in connection string.
so whats other things , i hav to change?
    Thanks

Search every file under $ORACLE_BASE for the old name.
Assuming *NIX use find and grep.
Why do people rename servers? A name is a name is a name. All it ever does is cause problems.

  • NitroX license disabled after computer name change

    Hi,
We had to change the network names on several windows development machines containing the Nitrox environment.
After that change Nitrox wouldn't want to start on any of these boxes, failing to reactivate the license ("No activations left for this serial number").
That's certainly caused by Nitrox not recognising the machine it's installed on anymore.
What should we do now ? If only we had access to an admin console where we can control our own licenses it would be so simple.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Apple TV adding number in airplay name

Three days ago, I started noticing one of my Apple TV started adding a number to its AirPlay name. So, when i use Airplay from my iPhone, or iMac I get a my custom name plus a number 2 between parenthesis "(2)". I reset all my apple TVs and now its happening in every single one of them. I went ahead and reset my Time Capsule and the problem does not get fixed. I changed to static IP addresss, with no luck. I reset everything again, like three times. Names still shows the number, and then disappears, and then appears within seconds, then the whole Apple TV is gone. This is crazy. Does anybody has any ideas? (Those three pics were taken one after the other: they changed randomly in seconds)

I have basically the same question. I have a random Apple TV that shows up, and the one that is in my bedroom, shows that there are two units.

  • System variable number for accounts name

I am preparing pld for general ledger.I am not able to display accounts name.I tried using G/L Accounts - > Accounts Name but it displayed the first record form the database.
But I am ablt to display accounts code i.e system variable 74.
What is the number of system variable for the G/L Accounts ->Accounts ?
I tried using System Information, but it showed me table name i.e OACT.

    Dilip,
Once thing to realize when running systems reports is what even you can see on the screen is only available through the Variable.
As I have seen the GL Report, the Account Name is not available on the display, so there could not be a variable for you to use in the PLD.
To help you I tried a few other things by using Account Name from OACT and stuff but nothing really works the way we need.
Sorry, could not take it any further ...

It would need to be done by Apple Service. They should have the equipment to do this. Your serial number can be found under the battery and on you box your MacBook came in.

  • My iMac's computer name keeps changing automatically after Yosemite upgrade

This started happening once I upgraded my iMac to Yosemite. It will add numbers to the name of my iMac.
Example: It starts off as say "My iMac"
Then a half day later, it changes to "My iMac (2)"
Then the next day it will be "My iMac (3)"
And if I open the Finder window, it will show "My iMac" and "My iMac (2)" under "Shared" but if you click on them, nothing happens.
When I go to System Preferences > Sharing the computer name will have the number there "My iMac (3)" and say it can be found as MyiMac-3.local
If I change it back to just "My iMac", the number process starts all over again. I even tried naming the iMac something it was never named before and the same process occurs with the adding of the numbers.
Anyone know how I can fix this?

Have had the same issue with an iMac and MacBook Pro, both with Yosemite (MacBook upgraded from the Yosemite public beta). Both previously had Mavericks, and at one time or another would have had both Ethernet cable and Wifi on. This issue has only occurred since the upgrade to Yosemite. I do not use iCloud, so I believe that may be irrelevant and merely coincidental.
The solution provided by an Apple Care rep seems to have resolved the issue. Has stuck now on both machines for the last few hours. Time will tell for certain, but here's what we did:
    - in System Preferences > Sharing, remove the (2) [or whatever is extra; mine was iMac (2), so I removed the (2)
    - exit Preferences
    - shutdown
    - restart machine in Recovery mode (machine off, press and hold Command + R, power on, when Apple logo appears release keys)
    - may take a few minutes to boot (depends on machine generation/speed, RAM and such)
    - open Disk Utility
    - select the OS disk (mine was Macintosh HD; selected the 'indented' item)
    - run Verify Disk Permissions
    - when finished run Repair Disk Permissions
    - restart
On the MacBook I tried turning on Wifi and so far so good.
    Banish the deux!

  • Computer name with number within brackets

    Hello
Since we have alle our computers connected to an Snow Leopard Server over Open Directory, we have an cosmetic problem which I am not able to solve.
In the System Preferences/Sharing/ the Computer Name is greyed. When the Computer crashed and rebooted the Computer Name ist still greyed but a Number between brackets is show (e.g. Example Computer (3).
I am not able to delete this (3) even if I delete the Network-Account-Server (and disconnect from the  and reboot I am still not able to delete this Number between the brackets.
Is their a way to fix this problem ? Do other person have the same Problem?

Here's the duplicate host names discussion that Kery O was likely recalling; this case is usually some sort of a loop, whether via a switch, via multiple network paths (wired and WiFi, etc), or otherwise.
If this is a stale entry due to the crash and not a network loop of some sort, then I'd expect that shutting down the problematic host and then tossing a HUP at the DNS service (cache flush) on each of the other hosts will clear this.  (sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder)  Or leave it alone, and let it clear itself out over time.
And Kery O, the behaviour around sleep?  Might that have been the sleep proxy (Airport and Time Capsule) that you're remembering?
