System and Data Back up

I am a user and only know enough about computers to know that I dont know very much, so please be gentle. I want an external back-up system, preferably portable, that backs up both the system (so that I can boot up from it if necessary) and my data and will do it automatically once i have established the parameters. I have been doing some research into software and it seems that most recommend or define that a firewire connection must be used since with my OS the USB connection will not allow a system back up. I have checked on line and all of the hits I get for firewire require OS 10.5 Can anyone provide me with the name of an external drive and software that will let me do what I want to do.
Many thanks

I said I didn't know much about computers, I think I have put this on the wrong forum and I cant see how to delete it. Apologies.

If you never backed up your phone to iTunes and never backed it up to iCloud all of your content is gone forever.

  • After restoring my phone as New, how do I get my contacts and data back without the restrictions password

I forgot my restrictions password so I restored my Iphone as a New phone.  Now, how do I get the contacts, apps and other data back on the Iphone? Can I restore my contacts & data without it also requiring a restrictions password again?

Thanks for replying.  I had to do this process in order to get ICloud activated so I don't have it there.  I do have an external backup of the Itunes library, but it sounds like that would also restore the restriction password that I don't know.
Why would ICloud be different (if I had backed up there?) Does it only save data?
And It sounds like I need to keep my contacts in another source .... such as? ...  No, I don't use email much and my contacts arec the phone numbers I've captured in my phone.  After I have them backed up to ICloud, do I also need to make sure they are somewhere else to where I won't run into losing them again?
    appreciate your experience and help.

  • I reverted to saved when using an iMac programme and lost data. How can I go back say 24hrs to how the system and data was then?

Lost a tune I was working on in garageband by reverting to saved.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Do you make backups of the data? If so, it is possible to recover the file you had 24 hours before, but if not, you cannot recover it.
If you have Time Machine, the only thing you have to do is to go to the folder where you have the GarageBand library with the projects (usually, "Music"). Then, open the Time Machine app, navigate to a backup made before which contains the project you want to recovery, choose the file and select "Restore". See -> OS X Mavericks: Restore items backed up with Time Machine

  • I sent in my ipod to get fixed and they sent me a new one. Can i get my photos and data back?

I really need my photos back.

    - If photos are in an iPod backup then restore from that backup. See the restore topic of:
    iOS: How to back up
    - If the photos are in the iTunes backup then get them from the backup by:
Recover iPhone, iPad or iPod photos from backups with Picturescue
    Note that Apple said:
Will the data on my iPod be preserved?
No, you will receive a replacement iPod that will not contain any of your data and songs. Before obtaining service, it is important to back up your data. Apple is not responsible for the loss of information while servicing your iPod and does not offer any data transfer service.
iPod touch customers: Before obtaining service, you can back up your data using iCloud or iTunes. Following service, your replacement iPod touch may have a newer version of the operating system (iOS) and you will need to restore your data using the method used to back it up (iCloud or iTunes). You may also need to update your App Store apps for compatibility with the newer iOS. If you experience a problem with an app purchased from the App Store, check iTunes to see if an update is available or contact the app developer directly.

  • Restoring Apps AND Data back to "New" iPhone

I just got an iPhone 3GS a few weeks ago and, since I'd been using an iPod Touch for a year, I simply transferred over that data to my new iPhone using "restore from backup." Somewhere along the way I was also prompted to upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2. However, the whole time I've been using my iPhone it's been freezing up a bit, responding sluggishly (sometimes taking a few seconds), or refusing to send mail even when it has perfect reception. I'm getting sick of this and it seems pointless.
I DO have a lot of apps, but I doubt that's really the problem. I am thinking I should finally bite the bullet and wipe the phone, restore and set up as a "new iPhone." But I'm very worried I won't be able to get back my Application DATA-- all that juicy stuff I have stored in my budget apps, databases, etc. Is there any way to restore my iPhone to factory settings and then reinstall these apps including all their data, but without dragging whatever might be corrupt and slowing things down?

OK, thanks for the quick reply, that's quite helpful. Just to clarify, then: Do you think it would mean anything then to do a restore of my iPhone to factory settings and then reimport from the previous backup? Would it reset anything or would it basically end up reproducing the iPhone as it was before I started the process?
If it's not going to do anything to improve the situation, I guess there's no point in doing it that way, and maybe I should try some Genius Bar help or just sacrificing some app data in order to get the iPhone up to speed first for ongoing use.

  • Do i need to back up all my data on my iphone 4 before i do a factory restore and how do i get all my contact and data back?

If i do a factory restore will i be able to retreive back all my music, photos, text messages and contacts or will it wipe them for good?

Restoring the phone wipes is clean as part of the process.  You should read the User Manual to make sure you are using your phone properly so all your data is safe before the restore process.

  • How do i get my information and data back onto my 4s?

Let me tell you how it happened and see if you can find an answer: I was going to the computer that i use to put music on to load some music on to my 4s. when i opened itunes, it said "set up as new iphone" or "set up from backup". i chose the "from backup" because i had an old 4s, but the speakers wern't working, so i got a new one, but the last backup to restore it from was from a couple of months back. i chose it, and it synced my iphone, but i hadn't done anything yet. when i checked my iphone, all of my contacts, notes, email accounts were gone. im desperate and how do i get this information back on?

Thanks for replying.  I had to do this process in order to get ICloud activated so I don't have it there.  I do have an external backup of the Itunes library, but it sounds like that would also restore the restriction password that I don't know.

  • What is a Reasonable Tradeoff Between System and Data Space in Windows 7 64bit?

I have a brand new W530 with the 500 GB HD -- 445 GB actual total space in C: ("Windows7_OS"), including about 85 GB of OS, pre-installed applications, and Lenovo bloat-ware).  I plan to create a separate user-data partition by stealing space from the OS partition, call it E:, and to re-direct user Documents, Pictures, etc. directories plus the Outlook PST file there.  Thus C: will be reserved mainly for Windows, Page File, Crash Dump, Restore Points, and new software installation.
Any thoughts about a reasonable division of drive space between these two partitions?  Coming from Windows XP 32bit on a much smaller HD, I have little idea what to expect in terms comfortable space requriements for Windows 7 64bit.  (I realize I can re-size the partitions later, but it seems best to start with realistic allocations...) -- JCW2
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It is hard to comment without some idea how the machine will be used. Some applications are not very well behaved and install on the c: drive regardless of what you do. Some functions, like the briefcase functions in windows 7 are harder to get off c:, although it can be done. (I got it right the second time I tried) If you share files using briefcase, you end may up with most of your data on c:. I decided I wanted to boot from an SSD, but I needed more data, so I put in a 256GB mSATA drive and moved my boot partition there. I used my entire HD for data. That worked out well for me.

  • How can I safe my data back from the Time capsule to iphone and macbook?

    Hi,
last weekend we were robbed while being on vacation and iphones and macbook air got stolen. Good thing was that at home we had a time capsule and our normal macbook. As soon as we get the new iphones and the new airbook we want to get our itunes and apps and datas back to the iphones and airbook ... can somebody tell us how to re-safe or back-safe stuff from the time capsule back to the equipment?
Thank you ... I feel so "naked" without my phone :-(
    Virtualkate

Sorry about your loss. Follow the directions here to use Time Capsule to restore your new Air to the state your old Air was in when stolen. When you first connect your new phones, you'll be given the option of restoring from the backup of your old phones or setting up as new. Restore from your previous backups, followed by syncing your content back to your phones. You should be good to go. Maintaining current backups makes this a piece of cake.

  • Help configuring system for media system and work

    Hello All,
    First thanks for your help
Basically I have an outline of what I would like to do and with your help I can get rest figured out. Going to get a Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz 2Gb ram to start with then eventually upgrade to 4g ram, ATI 1900 XT Card, bluetooth and airport,2 superdrives,2 monitors hooked up and 1 hard drive of 750g Thats my starting point
I want to buy 3 seagate drives of 750g each to fill up to max
So question 1. is how do I set up the hard drives I have heard about raid 0 and raid 1 but not sure how to go about it?also want the safest set up have noticed sum people on forums sumtimes lose info so I am concerned
Sum info for the above question is that my plan was to connect the 3 seagate drives into 1 and add my itunes folder to this drive basically a giant media drive plan to have all my music and over 600 and adding movies that i am converting via handbrake so when Itv is realesed I can view all my media on the tv and box all originals up and 1 extra hard drive use that simply for files documents etc.So with this info my next question is
2.Once leopard is realesed what will be best way to back up info?and how using this configuration or different one?
Thank you again I know I probly missed sumthing and will ask as info comes in or I remember
P.s will be doing video editing
PowerBook, soon to be Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Your questions have been asked and answered in the Mac Pro forums. I suggest you take some time to search these forums for information. You will find information on RAID performance at http://www.barefeats.com.
For information on backups visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.
RAIDs do not provide any data security. If you need to maintain a backup of your system and data then you will need to provide additional storage sufficient to backup your main storage array. Given your indicated configuration you would need an external RAID system made up of three 750 GB drives that would be used to backup your internal array.

  • Have lost settings and data

Hi, i've got a refurbished G4 running OS x.4.10 and until recently it's been working fine but i logged on the other night to find that the desktop had reverted to default settings, iphoto had started from scratch (and lost all my photos) - the same with mail (lost all emails and settings), address book, stickies and other dashboard items including previously downloaded stuff - not good.
Fortunately i backup everything so i've not lost much but i'd like to know what has happened and how i can get the lost data back without having to upload it all again from my external drive (which could take hours).
As far as i know, i've not done anything unusual to cause this to happen - the previous days work involved downloading a couple of files from apple.com and changing some settings for address book - other than that i was just typing a word document and sending e-mails.
If anyone can help by suggesting what went wrong and how to avoid it again i would be very grateful, also - can i get my settings and data back without having to upload it file by file (i don't think my sanity could cope with that).
    Adam.

    Hi Adam,
If the Netinfo database becomes corrupt your account files can become "lost". They can be recovered if you have a recent backup of the database. It's backed up when the cron jobs run (when the computer is on over night or manually via Terminal or a maintenance application). The following article explains how to do it.

  • How can I save to iCloud after turning OFF "Documents and Data"?

I seldom store documents on iCloud, and I was tired of having iCloud be the default save location for my Numbers documents, so I went into iCloud Preferences and de-selected "Documents and Data".  That worked.  Now iCloud is no longer the default save location.
But if I wanted to save the occasional spreadsheet on iCloud, how do I get it there without turning "Documents and Data" back on? I thought there was a way to select iCloud as an optional save location, but can't figure out how to do it.

I think the easiest way to get around this problem is to keep a blank document in your Documents folder , the duplicate and save as needed.  The default loacation in this case is where the document is currently stored.
