System backup
i am using mac os tiger but now i want to switch over to leopard..i have got the leopard uptodate dvd...
i also want to keep a backup of the tiger to avoid any inconvenience...kindly guide me about the system files that need the backup so that i may easily get back to tiger in case i face any problem..
i am going to use carbon copy cloner for this purpose..
thanks
is it possible that i just choose the important system files and program to create a backup file?
It's not possible and you are not creating a backup file with carbon copy cloner. You need a separate firewire connected external disk. As the program's name states you are making a carbon copy of a bootable disk. The copy will also be bootable. In the unlikely event that you wanted to go back to Tiger you would boot from the clone disk and use carbon copy cloner to copy the clone back to the disk in the MBP. However long the copy takes it is time well spent.

How can I create a system backup in Solaris 10?
Hello,
sorry about my English.
I need to create a image of entire disk or a system backup. I think use "ufsdump" but I'm not sure. Can I create a backup of whole disk with "ufsdump" command? Are there any application to do it.?
I've got a Solaris 10.
Thank.
Alejandro. If you want to create an image of the entire disk, then `dd' is an option. But you can also use ufsdump to create an image of a filesystem running on that disk, but you need to do that for every filesystem on the disk and please keep a copy of you vtoc for the future if you need to restore everything.
On the other hand you make me thing about someone who wants to clone machines and then a Flash Archive can also be an option. Please keep in mind to ask the question in the future instead of conformation of your answer ;-) -

On 11/1/2011, Time Machine (TM) terminated with an error message I did not record. I noted that the drive was full and decided to do a separate complete bootable system backup using Carbon Copy Clone (CCC), before clearing the TM volume and trying to start it over clean. Part way through the full system backup CCC put up a message that there was a Physical Problem "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16". That was about the time that TM malfunctioned, so I assumed they were related. After starting CCC over a couple of times, and getting the same error message, I let it go through to completion of the backup, which took three or four hours. I then ran tests using Disk Utility and verified that there was nothing physically wrong with both the internal hard drive and the TM volume. I also erased and reformatted the TM volume. However, every time I started Time Machine, it would record a few GB and terminate with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume". I restarted the computer with no change in results. Note that prior to starting the CCC backup, I "Repaired Permissions", "zapped the PRAM" and "re-set the SMC", hoping to have a clean bootable system on the backup. I ran Techtool and no problems were found.
I'm running this on an Intel iMac under 10.5.8 and recording to a 500GB My Passport drive. My hard drive is only about half full at 246 GB. My assessment is that something happened at 16-28-16 on 11/1/2001 to screwup the Backup Directory in the file at "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16". My question is, how do I fix it?
I had just completed writing everything above here, explaining the problems I had been encountering for the past 24 hours. I had the Time Machine window standing open on the desktop where I could see it, having recentlycleared it after the last termination. As I was proofing what I had written, I looked at the window and noted that the clock had started a new run for a full back up, since all prior efforts had failed and the TM volume was empty. As I watched and waited for it to fail again, as it had been doing at about 13 GB, it kept going and going until it just finished a complete backup, about 4.5 hours later, with my having done nothing. Now my question would have to be - what could possiibly have happened to make it perform this way? It will be interesting to see if it continue to operate normally, or if the problem will return, in a later backup run.jcm21 wrote:

You should not keep those files for long, and probably shouldn't back them up (if you need them at all -- since you do regular backups, I'm doubtful just how worthwhile that feature is).
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
One of Apple's maddeningly incomplete messages. Most likely, there's a problem with a file (quite possibly the one CCC didn't like). See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details and instructions on finding and fixing it.
If you continue running the Directory Protection app, be sure to exclude your Time Machine drive from it (as it will just take up lots of room, and won't help repair your backups if there's a problem); and exclude the folders it creates from being backed-up by Time Machine (as they'll create large backups, and you probably can't use the backed-up folders anyway), per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. -
Is possible control tape library slot 1 - 10 for file system backup
hi ..

file system backup
1. is possible osb only use slot 1 - 10 for file system backup ? amanda can control slot x - slot y for the configuration .
2. how do i label the tape for slot 1 - slot 10 by obtool ? how to control osb auto load the tape for next backup ? where to check the log say that next tape is tape-02 ?
thanks ..hi dcooksey
how do i use list for a tape drive...for example, if you want tape drive A to only use slots 1-10 from obtool or webtool ?
becoz i new to backup solution & osb ( i always use ghost or acronis to clone the image ) , my thinking as below , pls correct me if i am wrong
slot 1 - 10 for daily backup
slot 11-16 for full system backup
slot 17 - 20 reserve ( this tape only use for full system backup before perform any application upgrade patches , )
daily backup mon - fri ( 2 week ) ( no backup on saturday and sunday ) , server application offline
full system backup friday ( 1 , 14 on calendar ) every 2 week perform full system backup after daily backup completed
for upgrade application ,
perform full system backup after daily backup , then release the server to application team to perform upgrading .
so how to set my media family for the above setting ? the slot configuration is control by media family ?
hope you can help ... -
Dear Experts,
We just take our bi system(abap+java) backup online, so could you please help me which files we need to backup during the Sap system is online,
As the below help.sap.com link said that for filesystem backup "Create a backup of the SAP system directory /usr/sap/<SID>." (before we need to stop SDM)
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/4b/d8f23ea4b42e5ae10000000a114084/content.htm
Can we backup entire /usr/sap/<SID> directory while sap and db is still runnig ? if not which directories we need to backup ?
Should we backup filesystem and db backup at the same time for a consistent backup, or can we schedule separately filesystem and db backup if there is no deployment exist between db backup and filesystem backup schedules,
Best Regards,
AtakanAs suggested you can either go with the ofline backup for the abap and for Java you need to have the filesystem backup.
Or you should go witht he file system backup of all the file system. But for that you need downtime.
So what i shall suggest you thet go vith the online backup and have the archive log on and have archive logs backup too.
And just the online backup completes have the Java export of the Java system of your BI.Durng the exportthe SDM will stop while the Servernode and the dispatcher service will be running,so no error will occur when some one is using the JAVA BI.
This is the safest method ad you can recover the JAVA system any time. Please also have an offline backup at weekends of the abap system when its down.
Please check the Password of DDIC of client 000 and the J2ee_admin before taking the export.
Thanks

When trying to do a system backup to my remote LaCie hard drive, what does it mean when I get a message that says "waiting for volume LaCie disk"? While this message apears no back-up occurs. Is there a setting I need to change?
You can't do a backup of icloud to an external drive. In fact, does your post have anything to do with icloud (you're in the icloud forum)?
What kind of "system backup" are you doing? Are you using Time Machine? -

Development System Backup - Best Practice / Policy for offsite backups
Hi, I have not found any recommendations from SAP on best practices/recommendations on backing up Development systems offsite and so would appreciate some input on what policies other companies have for backing up Development systems. We continuously make enhancements to our SAP systems and perform daily backups; however, we do not send any Development system backups offsite which I feel is a risk (losing development work, losing transport & change logs...).
Does anyone know whether SAP have any recommendations on backuping up Development systems offsite? What policies does your company have?
Thanks,
ThomasThomas,
Your question does not mention consideration of both sides of the equation - you have mentioned the risk only. What about the incremental cost of frequent backups stored offsite? Shouldn't the question be how the 'frequent backup' cost matches up with the risk cost?
I have never worked on an SAP system where the developers had so much unique work in progress that they could not reproduce their efforts in an acceptable amount of time, at a acceptable cost. There is typically nothing in dev that is so valuable as to be irreplaceable (unlike production, where the loss of 'yesterday's' data is extremely costly). Given the frequency that an offsite dev backup is actually required for a restore (seldom), and given that the value of the daily backed-up data is already so low, the actual risk cost is virtually zero.
I have never seen SAP publish a 'best practice' in this area. Every business is different; and I don't see how SAP could possibly make a meaningful recommendation that would fit yours. In your business, the risk (the pro-rata cost of infrequently needing to use offsite storage to replace or rebuild 'lost' low cost development work) may in fact outweigh the ongoing incremental costs of creating and maintaining offsite daily recovery media. Your company will have to perform that calculation to make the business decision. I personally have never seen a situation where daily offsite backup storage of dev was even close to making any kind of economic sense.

No OS X system backups were found?
Hi there,
I recently did the Mountain Lion -> Mavericks upgrade. Too late I discovered that sync between Outlook 2011 and Mail etc had been removed from Mavericks. That's a whole other story.
So I decided that I'd revert back to Mountain Lion from a Time Machine backup so I followed the instructions 'Command R' at startup and followed the bouncing ball only to get the message back "No OS X system backups were found".
From research it appears that this was a bug first disocvered in Mountain Lion.
I've been on Mavericks for over a week now and Time Machine backups appear fine in the 'Star Wars' view and a file level recovery works just fine.
So this morning I decided to see if system backups had corrected itself by restarting and doing Command R etc - nup, same message.
Anyone else experienced this and found a simple way of resolving the problem? I'm no longer going to revert to Mountain Lion but I would like the piece of mind that I actually have a full backup!
Cheers,
JappasThis simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including exclusions. The backups won't be affected. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy the file to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot and recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane. It will show that you have no backups. Don't worry; your backups haven't been touched. Run a backup to test. The backup may take much longer than usual. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -
Hi,
what is the procedure for sap java standalone system backup. as per my knowledge, we need to take a backup of:
1. java database
2. file strucute (sdm) for configuration data
can any one provide me the complete document or steps to perform the standalone java system backup.
Thanks,
Niranjan.hi Niranjan V,
i have followed follow the steps for backup in my landscape, the first procedure is the SAP recommended one for consistent backup for sap systemsand the second procedure may take more space, but it is very easy to recover the system in short time.
1) take a backup by sapinst ( master installer ) is know as system copy.
( or )
2) take another backup by file strucute (sdm) for configuration data
a ) disable all sap and oracle services at OS level
b ) take copy of whole of usr directory into a seperate folder ( ex: bi_backup_01242009)
c ) take copy of whole of oracle directory into the folder ( ex: bi_backup_01242009)
note : all sap and oracle services should be disabled in services.msc in windows. where as in unix stopsap commnad stops all sap and oracle services please check if not stopped any one of the services ( processes) kill it.
these are the complete steps for file strucute (sdm) for configuration data
you have take the offline file backup by the following steps
1) down the sap instance by the command -> stopsap (unix) / MMC (windows)
2) i have created the the floder named ->ex: aed_file_backup_042409 in AED_Backup folder
2) /usr/sap entire folder
3) /oracle/AED entire folder except 102_64, desktop
thank you,

How to recover DB2 using offline file system backup.
Gurus,
I had a problem with my BI PRD's database. 1 of my BI consultant accidently deleted some important 2010's data. We've try recover online database backup of BWP into BWQ and retrieve the missing data. However the backup retention period was expired and we dont have any available online backup now.
Only hope is my offline file system backup which backup the whole file system of BWP ONLY.
My question:-
Can i restore the file system (offline backup) into BWQ and rebuild my DB2 in BWQ. Please enlighten me.
Thanks,
Devan.Hi
You can do it .The file system backup image can be mirroed into production system and by making using of "db2inidb" utility you can restore the whole database.

System backup of HANA server and HANA DB.
Hi .
I'm creating some of documents for maintenance operation - hana server .
I want to confirm about backup of "HANA Server" . Also HANA server is SUSE linux , so normally I get backup of linux server by dump/restore command , use dd command when server offline and on rescue mode kernel , or use something disk(partition) image backup tool .
I think it can use for SUSE linux server - HANA Server too.
In this time , if I get backup image of all disk that contains all HANA related files including persistent storage (of course hana is offline when get backup) , then I restore this image , can I use this HANA DB ?
I see some of documents of HANA backup , but I never find about this type system backup . It is not supported operation?
Regards,
JTHI Jim,
standard Linux system backup/recovery methods apply also for the SAP HANA servers.
However, backing up the SAP HANA database is only supported by the backup commands.

How i can take OS file system backup manually?-
which is the best mothod?
I know, we can use tar?
could anyone tell me which is the best method..

KSV.DBAIn addition to the link mentioned above, do you have to rely on free solutions, or do you have a budget for a solution?
You can perform a complete OS level backup of your Oracle database when it is shutdown, or put the database into online backup mode, but need to review the Oracle documentation for limitations. The tools of choice for Oracle is RMAN, which does not require extra logging or backup mode.
You can use tar or rsync if you prefer to backup data to a shared storage through NFS or use tar to stream the data to an attached tape drive. There is plenty of information and tutorials on how to perform incremental backups on the web, and here tar incremental backup -
