System becomes unresponsive, hard reboot required (multiple Macs)

For the last couple of weeks I have been encountering unresponsive systems on several Macs, each time with the same symptoms:
Spinning beachball in all running apps
Spinning beachball for all menu items
Unable to launch, quit or force quit apps
Mousing and window switching still works
Each time the only way to recover is a hard reboot. There seems to be no mention of any problems in the system logs, I get the impression that the system is hanging before being able to report anything.
I have this problem on three Macs so far, a 2x2.3Ghz PowerMac G5, a 2x2.0Ghz PowerMac G5 and my iMac G5 2.0Ghz at home. All systems are running 10.4.10.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions?
Edit: I have already repaired permissions, emptied caches, run scheduled maintenance, sacrificed chickens, etc.

I don't think it's a lack of memory, 2.5Gb, 2.0Gb and 1,0Gb respectively.
My G5 at work (2.5Ghz) and my iMac at home have very similar setups as far as installed apps and settings, however the third Mac at work has very little in common with the other two. OTOH the only non-Apple software all three Macs have in common is Adobe Creative Suite (2xCS3, 1xCS1), Quicksilver and Growl.
I figure it must be something system related because a user level app shouldn't take out all the others like that, I was hoping to find that I wasn't the only person experiencing these problems!
I have the terminal open with my session on my work Mac, but I had closed the window before it last beachballed and it wouldn't open a new one. Even if the window had been open I doubt it would have responded.
I will try to SSH into whichever Mac beachballs next to see if it responds, but I know it happened at home once while I was streaming a film from the iMac and the film immediately stopped. At first I suspected it was network related because the Airport menu item always seemed to be the first thing to beachball at home, but all the network connections are wired at the office.

Can you start up holding Command R to access your recovery partition? If so run Disk Utility to repair the boot volume, if not your hard drive may have failed. Without more information it's kinda hard to tell.

  • System becomes unresponsive (hang) on exit from screen saver

subject line says all, frequently when exiting from the screensaver (type in password and hit enter) the system becomes un-responsive (hang).  Any ideas ?

Are you using the stock Arch kernel or some other one?

  • Safari Crashes Entire System, Hard Reboot Required

Ok, ever since the update to 10.6.1 and Safari 4.0.3, I've been getting pretty recurrent crashes of the whole system where I need to hard shut it down. (it tells me to). First happened a few days after I updated and I've never gotten these errors before - not once. I usually, on average, crash once a day and it's fairly annoying.
The circumstances which bring up the crash are when I open a new tab in Safari, so it displays my new sites. The second I click on one of the windows to navigate to the site it crashes, it doesn't even start loading up the page. It doesn't matter which site I go to, it has crashed on just about every single one. I've reset Safari Multiple times, repaired permissions, pretty much the works. Anyone having a similar issue, or know a possible fix? Should I post the crash log?
I consider myself very tech literate and I work for a university fixing computers. However, I can't read crash logs for the life of me... So tell me what to do and I'll figure it out.

Ran the Extended Test and my suspicions were confirmed, the RAM is good. IMHO, if the RAM was bad it would be unstable in a variety of programs, not just doing a specific action in a specific program. I've dealt with many computers with bad RAM and this didn't seem to be one of them.
Now, should I just AppZap, Safari and re-install it
Heres the last Safari crash log, I have.

  • OSX Mountain Lion Finder slowly dies, system becomes unresponsive - restart required to

I have a MacBookPro retina and it was working fine for months but all of a sudden its now started to fall apart every few hours.  I use my computer daily for work and when i first boot up everything runs well but over time, say 2 hrs, i notice that screenshots take ages to appear on my desktop and then finder doesnt open and even new web pages or new applications do not load.  I try restarting finder, but that doesnt help forcing me to restart my computer, which i sometimes need to force restart as it hangs on the grey screen.
Things I have tried that have not worked
    - re-installing Lion
    - removing the 'All my files' bookmark from finder
    - uninstalled air display (which registered some 3rd party kernels)
I have noticed that my mac never finds my backup timecapsule, so i will try turning off timemachine entirely.
    Help!!!
p.s. I kinda miss my 2009 Macbook pro with Snow Leopard, still going strong and has had a fraction of the issues i have experienced with my new retina and OSX lion combo.

After removing the BlackBerry software using AppCleaner and following the steps http://thetipsguy.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/rimalbumartdaemon-is-using-all-of-my.ht ml here to remove the daemon my computer has returned to normal - its been up and running without issue for a couple of days now.
Checking the logs more closly has really paid off. :-)

  • Snow Leopard Crash / Freezing Issue - Keyboard Dead - Hard Reboot Required

    Good morning,
Been using Snow Leopard on a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac pretty much since the day of launch. Initially was very pleased, no real problems, seemed to run even smoother than regular Leopard, however, recently, my system has developed a bunch of issues, particularly when running word and/or transmission (possibly other apps, but I have noticed with these two so far).
The main problem is, very randomly, the system will lock-up. This can be after 1 hour or 24 hours, there is no real correlation. After the lock up, you are able to use open apps, ie Transmission, Word, Safari, Finder, etc, but they do not function correctly...for example
Word - You can click into documents, but any keyboard strokes are completely ignored.
Safari - You can browse links on default start page, etc, but you cannot create new tabs or type anything into the address bar.
Finder - You can browse folders; but you cannot perform any functions such as dragging to trash, etc.
Also worth noting, it the main menu bar at the top of the screen continues to say either "Word" or "Transmission" etc, regardless of what application you are in. Clicking on any applications icons in the dock has no response unless they were already running.
The system is unable to shut down or log off, and you cannot quit apps. The only option is to do a hard reset via holding down the power off button.
Note: My system is set to never sleep. There is no screensaver.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I'm a fairly new mac user so i'm not aware how to view log files etc., which may identify the problem.
    Many thanks in advance.

Just want to reiterate. I am seeing freeze issues with my iMac 2.8 GHZ 4GB ram and wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Had this for two years without problem. When a freeze occurs mouse is reponsive but clicks don't give result. I am unable to open window to force quit apps. It may be related to iTunes but I can't confirm. Happening again now, even as I type this I can't open other appslike console log. I add more later.

  • Back up to internal hard drive from multiple macs. Possible?

I have a MacPro and was thinking of putting a second hard drive in the case to use with time machine, and I'm 99% sure I can use it to back up the Mac Pro's boot drive to it, but my question is what about other macs on the network? I have a macbook and wife's iMac that I'd like to backup to the MacPro's second hard drive. I know it would be no problem if it was an external firewire or usb drive, but I'd prefer to just drop it in the MacPro's case. Help.

If you can see (mount) and use this second hard drive with the MacBook and the iMac, as if it was an external, then fine.
So all you have to find, is the way to plug it to the MacBook and to the iMac (not simultaneously), as if it was just another external drive.
Can't one of the MacPro's USB or FW ports work that way, as an "out" port?
Oh and it also has to be unmounted from the MacPro's end.
If this easiest approach doesn't work:
At least Target Disk Mode will successfully "show" any other Mac's internal as just another plugged volume.

  • After upgrading to Aperture 3.4.1 (and really since 3.4), aperture becomes unresponsive almost immediately after I open it.  It tears through over 1GB of memory within a minute, and I am forced to either force quit or open the terminal and "killall".

How do I fix this issue?  I haven't been able to use Aperture or load new photos into Aperture for weeks.  Since upgrading to Aperture 3, from Aperture 2; I've noticed that Aperture 3 is a major memory hog.  I had to upgrade my unibody macbook to keep up with Aperture, otherwise my whole system become unresponsive when trying to simply look at my photos.  I have about 15,000 pictures in my library, but the program is designed to organize large libraries.  Why has it been so buggy the past year?  Should I just jump ship and go to Lightroom?
    Thanks

    Matt,
it is normal, that after a crash a library repair is required. Aperture is a database, and if a crash happens, transactions may not be completed, so the library may be left in an inconsitent state. Usually the built-in repair methods can take care of this. But I assume, you have a backup of your Aperture library. If not, now would be the time to create one, just in case.
I doubt, Aperture is causing this crashes - it may be a coincidence; kernel panics quite often are due to an overfull hard disk, incompatible frameworks or kernel extensions, or to failing hardware. Run a hardware check, check the available disk space and file system with disk utility, and try to remember, if you installed anything else lately, that might have added incompatible kernel extensions. Turn off any helper apps, start up items.
Your kernel panic occurs when accessing the graphics card. Sometimes this can be resolved by booting into safe mode, this will disable advanced features and reset the card. Note: Aperture will not run in safe boot mode, see
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Browse MacBook forum and Mt. Lion forum, to see, if anybody else has problems with Mt. Lion and your particular Hardware configuration and card.
As a last measure reinstall your MacOS. You may also have a look at Thomas' Tech Corner » Understanding upgrade nightmares

I have a 5 month old  iMac running Lion and W7 with the latest version of boot camp . It has been operating flawlessly until I went to reboot into Mac tonight. Screen went black, and system is unresponsive. I've tried force quitting and turning power off. Hard drive starts, there's a small amount of drive activity and that's it.

Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?
It sounds like this may have happened...
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory, (it can happen spontaneously too)...

  • Mac becomes unresponsive every so often

Hi, every so often my Mac will become unresponsive, This happens about once or twice a day. When it hangs it's usually for about 7 seconds. Clicking Dashboard won't bring it up, Clicking on Expose won't bring it up, clicking on Safari won't maximize it. When it becomes unresponsive nothing is clickable. this doesn't happen often. I've repaired permissions and restarted my computer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Without any information about what is going on specifically when these "pauses" occur, it's nearly impossible to tell you much more. If you note down the time when a pause does occur, then you can check the logs with the Console application to see what was going on at the time.
If you have automated or scheduled backups the pauses could be due to a backup in progress. You can watch Activity Monitor to see if CPU usage increases dramatically when a pause occurs.
You can also perform some basic maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack (not compatible with Snow Leopard.) If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)

  • Safari and Firefox are FREEZING the entire OS requiring hard reboot.

    Hello new user here.
I have been working on a client computer:
Dual 2.7 G5 Tower with 8GB Ram (early 2005), only mouse and keyboard plugged into USB port.
Installed on new HD with clean install from Leopard 10.5.6 Install Disk. Updated to OS X 10.5.8, all apple updates and firmware updates applied.
ASD for the system PASSED all tests and on multiple loops.
    MEMTEST Passed, no errors
Temperature monitor within safe ranges under 70C for everything.
Temperature Calibration of the chips completed through ASD
No dust in the case, no leaks detected, no evidence of leaks either.
Through diagnostics and testing original components by using replacing with known good components show that the hardware is SOLID. All the tower components passed the Apple Diagnostics and tested as WORKING in other towers.
    Permissions Fix = completed
Deleted the browser preferences, deleted caches, etc etc.
The system is CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN
So when I got to run Safari, it crashes within 1 minute and takes out the entire system with it. Firefox will do the same but in 5 minutes or so. Opera browser WORKS. (But that doesn't solve the problem of why Safari and Firefox are hosing the system.
I also tried this on wired lan, and a wireless lan, and a USB data modem (AT&T), and changed MTU, etc etc etc. The network is SOLID.
I am a 15 year experienced desktop IT tech working on PCs and MACs and I am completely stumped.
I can duplicate it each and every time. Browsing on google, cnn, yahoo, will crash the system.
Here is something odd too. I ran folding at home for > 48 hours on this machine and came back over the weekend and it was FINE. The second I started up a Safari, it crashed that a reboot was required to recover.
    Any ideas? Any help appreciated.

Hi stantony1, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Wow, great work so far!
Temperature monitor within safe ranges under 70C for everything.
Hopefully way under, like under 60°C.?
    MEMTEST Passed, no errors
The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.
    Memtest OS X...

Rember is a freeware GUI for the memtest ...

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Does ȃfari crash it in Safe Mode???
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below.

  • Since updating to Mavericks my mac book pro locks up about 3 to 4 times a day, only way to recover is a hard reboot

Since updating to mavericks my mac boook pro locks up 3 to 4 times a day, the only way to recover is to hard reboot the system.  This started 2 days ago - about 15 days after upgrading.  All teh apps are visible just can't do anything with them.

Please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • Mac Pro 2009 Raid Set Lost after Hard Reboot

We have a newer Nehalem based Mac Pro with a 2009 Black Apple Hardware Raid card.  The Hard Drive Configuration is: 4 x 2TB Western Digital drives setup as a Raid 1+0 array providing 4TB of space with what we believed to be optimal performance and redundancy.  We had two volumes / partitions configured on the array, one 120GB for the OS and the remaining 3.8TB for data.
Everything was working fine when the server froze up.  ON the Screen an error message said there is a problem with your Raid controller, Please open Apple Raid Utility.. Unfortunatly when we tried to do that we just got a spining beachball. We tried to open finder and it beachballed.  We tried to force quit and nothing working. Finally we were left with no choice but to do a hard restart of the server and turn the machine off and then back on.
When the server came back on it would not boot up.  We were greeting with the Folder with a Queston Mark.  We booted from the Mac 10.6 Snow leopard Server Disk and opened up Apples Raid utility software.  Much to our shock the Raid Set and the two Volumes were not shown in the Utility.  However all 4 of the drives were listed and all being shown as Green light good status, but listed as "Roaming".  We weren't sure what to do, the volumes weren't accesible since they didn't exist, the Raid set wasn't there, there was no way to run something like Data Rescue Recovery software.  We tried calling Apple and have to wait until they open this morning.  After looking online at various forums we came accross this problem with no solutions.  Most of the people with the problems had the older 2006 Blue Raid card, and this appeared to be a common issue amoung others with the older card.  I decided to try and re-create the Raid 1+0 set.  However as soon as I did that I was prompted by Raid Utility that the drives I was selecting to use for the Raid set were already a part of another raid set and using them would delete the data on the set.  I obviously canceled the process. Crazy enough the system knows the drives belong to a Raid set but doesn't realize it should know what the raid set information is.
We were using Mac OS 10.6.7 Snow Leopard Server, and I even tried installing and updating an external drive with 10.6.7 Server and booted from the drive from the machine and try to run Raid Utility.  That did not work either.  Any advice from anyone would be awesome.  I'm worried what Apple is going to say when I do get a hold of them, the system is under Apple Care warranty.  Thanks in advance for anyone's time.

I haven't lost data, but in my 2010 Mac Pro with 2009-vintage Apple RAID card, it has this Really Annoying Habit of constantly losing Disk 3 (the spare) in my 4x2 TB internal RAID5 array whenever I have to do a hard reboot.
I keep having to re-mark the now-"Roaming" drive as a Spare and then wait 8+ hours for it to rebuild the array ... grrr.
I saw an Apple KB article that suggests removing the Roaming disk and re-inserting it.  Duh.  Fat lot of good that did.  Really wish there was some answer to this issue ... hard reboots should NOT cause array disks to go from "Assigned"/good to "Roaming"!

  • Since installation of a new hard drive on my mac book pro, clicking is now very difficult as I have severe arthritis in my hands.  Is it possible to alter the pressure required?

Since having a new hard drive installed on my Mac Book Pro it has become very hard to click since I have severe arthritis in my hands.  Is it possible to have the pressure required reduced to make it more comfortable?

I don't think there is any adjustment for that. The battery is under the trackpad. Did you have the HDD replaced at an Apple repair facility?
You may want to ask them to look at it and explain that it is harder press than before, maybe the battery is not nested correctly.
Here is a list of keyboard shortcuts which may help to reduce the amount of clicking that you have to do.

  • Opening .toast files causes my MAC to become unresponsive

    Hi,
My Macbook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010 -  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 -  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 - NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB - Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)) has recently developed an extremely frustrating problem, it occurs whenever I try to open a .toast file, whenever I do my MAC just hangs and becomes so slow it is unusable and I end up having to power off manually.
I am a picture researcher so I often need to grab stills from my DVD collection. The way I like to work (which has always been the most effective and reliable means of doing my job up until last weekend) is to rip my DVDs, compress the TS folder to a single-layer DVD sized image file using Toast Titanium. I would then open the .toast file and transfer the compressed audio and video TS folders to a folder on my external hard drive. This has always been the best way for me to maintain a balance between image quality and file size.
Since last weekend however, when I was ripping and compressing about 15 discs toward the end of the session my MAC was unable to open .toast files without hanging for ages and becoming unresponsive.
I have since upgraded to Lion, upgraded to the latest Toast Titanium and upgraded my Little Snitch as I thought this could be causing the problem, but nothing has helped I still have the same problem.
If anybody has experienced this, can shed any light on what is happening and hopefully offer a solution to the problem I would be most grateful.
    Thanks is advance,
    Michael.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
[[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
