System booting after fatal error FATAL

Hi all
one of my server is rebooting once in a week. after reebot I am not able to view any error other than [ID 796976 kern.notice] System booting after fatal error FATAL in /var/adm messages. can any one explain wot is this error
Regards
RPS

Generally speaking, whenever you notice a fatal reset, as represented by the three magic words "<i>fatal error FATAL</i>", you'll have virtually no information in the messages file.
Your system had such an abrupt event that Solaris had no opportunity to log anything before the reboot. You could `maybe` get a hint if there were many DIMM errors or file-system-full errors in the minutes before the reboot, but those would only be hints and not the actual cause of the event.
A fatal reset gives you information through only one method. Your console.
... and of course you have your console logged and saved?
&#91;probably not. very few people do that.&#93;
If the V880 is up and sems to be functional, you have only one recourse for the near future: establish a dedicated logging console output and hope the system breaks again.

  • Won't boot after Update Error

Hey there. Just yesterday I ran the software update utility. I had 3 things to update.
It asked me to restart the computer at the end. I clicked on the restart button.
It went to a blue screen with an update install progress bar.
Then I got an error box saying that an unkown error happened and asked me to restart the system.
I clicked the restart button on the box.
Now it hangs at the apple logo with the spinning "gear"
I booted it in single user mode and ran fsck, no errors were reported.
    I booted in Verbose mode.
    It gets stuck at
    "DSMOS has arrived"
I let it sit for 3 hours, it just stays at that one spot.
    EDIT:
If this indicates anything I do get this one error that it hangs on for a while in Verbose mode boot
    "AppleBCM501Ethernet: 0 0 setFixedSpeed - logic error, speed any?
and actually since this morning it no longer goes to the DSMOS has arrived.
Just sits at this logic error

  • Slow system boot after tweaks

yesterday I founded article on wiki about optimizations that can make my arch boot faster. So I:
    disabled some of unused tty
    added flags to menu.lst
disabled autoload modules in rc.conf and make load only those which were listed by hwdetect
    changed mkinitcpio hooks
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Speed_Up_udev Option 3
but now I'm a little dissapointed because when arch is booting and process comes to Loading Modules it takes much much longer than whole booting process before "optimizations". How to solve it?
Last edited by rzepaczyk (2011-05-29 09:19:13)

The only thing on your list that's not likely to cause these kind of complications is no. 1 - disabling unused ttys.
I would first enable module autoloading again. If the system still boots slowly after that, you can cross the module section off your list.
In that case I'd move on to the symbolic link you made for udev (option 3). Is the symlink really accurate?
If so, move on to the mkinitcpio hooks. They really shouldn't be tempered with. But just in case, this is all you need for a system with root on an ahci device using filesystem ext4:
    MODULES="ahci sd_mod ext4
    HOOKS="base"
It is safer to use the default though
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems"
If restoring the default mkinitcpio doesn't help there's only one point left on your list. Delete the kernel boot parameters.
There's also a bug in 2.6.39 related to modules ee-prom where the system would hang @ loading modules but that seems unlikely here.
    P.S.:
Also, do a system update. There's a new version of udev that might or might not fix your issue.

  • MacBook not booting after RAM upgrade

I'm sorry if the case has been already posted.
Yesterday I took my MacBook Alu unibody late 2008 to a RAM upgrade (from 2 to 4gigs) to an offical Mac Reseller. They installed it and showed me that the system loads properly and recognized the new RAM.
I took it home, started working on After Effects and Photoshop and when i wanted to check a video on Quicktime, this program refused to boot.
Then photoshop freeze and after effects did so. I quited all aplications and restarted. On restart after the 'bong' i've got the grey screen white an apple logo and a loading bar underneath, that was it, it never finished loading but shutting down.
After the 2nd try the computer gave me the BAD RAM alarm signal right before the start button was pressed and nothing more. I just managed to start it ONCE on safe mode, but this one also freezed and colapsed.
Today i didn't get the BAD ram alarm but the grey screen and loading bar after shutting down.
I took it back to the reseler, the shop boss who did the upgrade wasn't there , the guys on the morning shift placed the old RAM back resulting the same. So they told me it's a software problem, not hardware and might be caused by a failed firmware update or something i did wrong and since i was showed that the system booted after the upgrade i can't complain or argue that they did somethiing wrong.
So basically the want 80euros to check what's wrong with my computer plus the 120 i already payed them for a RAM that doesn't work and of course the repair cost of the computer.
On monday i'll go to talk to the boss, what do you guys recomend me to tell him? i'm frustrated that the guys there treat me like if i broke my computer for beeing stupid and wanted to get it fixed for free, when it clearly broke after they did something wrong on it!
    please advice me!
    thanks!

What brand is the RAM? From what you said, it is obvious that the RAM is at fault. I would simply tell them that it is not compatible and return the RAM.
Check the System Profiler to see what it says about the RAM (Apple Logo - About this Mac - More Info) and run this application to test the RAM:
    http://www.memtestosx.org/joomla/index.php
If either shows any errors, print out the results and take them with you to the store.

my iphone won't work after fatal error occurred installing iOS5.1 have followed allsteps to reconfigure software onto windows still no phone just a usb and itunes picture on screen

Connect the phone directly to the computer, not a hub.
Disconnect all other USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Disable your firewall
    Disable your antivirus
In iTunes if it recognizes the phone click "Restore"
If it doesn't recognize the phone:
Disconnect the phone from the phone end, leave the USB cable plugged into the computer
Hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons until the screen turns black, excactly 10 seconds, then release the SLEEP but continue holding the HOME (If an Apple logo appears you have held SLEEP too long; do it over)
While holding HOME connect the cable to the phone
As soon as iTunes recognizes the phone release the HOME button and it should restore.
If neither procedure works note the exact error message and post it.

As there are errors associated with ntpd, I would temporarily disable the ntpd service and also ipv6.
If they are not the only problem, at least your logs would be easier to examine for other problems.

i tray to reinstall i tunes in my pc after having error 7, but wyle in the instalation this mesage appear said service apple mobile device failed to star. verefy that you have suficient privileges to star system services.

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, does an iTunes install go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • My mac mini does not boot, after backing the enire system onto an external drive with Carbon Copy Clone

My Mac Mini does not boot, after backing the enire system onto an external drive with Carbon Copy Clone. I had switched the start-up disk back to the original of course. Now all I see is the Apple logo. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

Try disconnecting any external devices, especially hard drives
    and try rebooting.
If that doesn't help, then :
If you are running Lion, boot to the Recovery HD and run a
Repair Disk on the OSX partition.
If Snow Leopard, boot to the installl DVD and run Repair Disk.

Mac boot process and how to identify where problems may be.

My iMac freezes when trying to start up after an error occured when trying to do it's automatic apple software update. Stays on a white screen with time cirlce going round and another circle with a diagonal line thru it.  Said it would re-download updates when it had booted back up. but now it will not boot.  Is there anything I can do or is it serious?

Start your Mac with the original DVD that came with the computer and run disk utility on your hard drive to repair it. Also repair your permission then restart your iMac normally.

  • System won't boot after increased FSB to 166

I have a K7n2 board with AMD 2100+.  The system was working fine until, i increased the FSB to 166.  Now when i turn on the system, no beep sound and no video at all.  There are power to all of the orther components.  I cleared the cmos, nothing happen when i powered up.  I have another system, with ECS and AMD 1800+.  I swapped the CPU between the two systems.  Placing the 1800+ in the K7n2, the system boot up fine.  But, the board recogninzing the CPU as AMD(tm) Athlon XP 1924 mhz.  It is supposed to be only 1.53 mhz.  The system run fine.  When placing the 2100+ back in, it won't boot.
When placing the 2100+ in the ECS board the computer boot up fine also. I eliminated the CPU problems.
    Thanks for any help.

I got it to work now. I reset the safe mode(100 mhz), rebooted, go to the BIOS set to default, and reset the jumper to user mode (default 133).  It work fine now.
    Ignore the question, thanks.

  • Windows hangs boot after upgrading any software

    Hi,
My Windows 8 Pro x64 Dell XPS8500 machine developed a really weird problem.  (The problem actually began a while back - first noticed maybe 4-6 month ago - but only now trying to fix it.)  It re/boots fine so long as I don't try to install anything.
However, installing any software upgrades causes Windows to hang on boot.  The software upgrades that I tried are Evernote, iTunes, Java VM, and all of them are triggering the same behavior.  All this aforementioned software seeming doesn't have
anything in common.  The only known upgrades that do not appear to trigger the issue are Firefox and Chrome (where upgrades happen more or less in passive fashion)  There is no clear event that I can recall in the past that I can attribute this happening
to (i.e. I can't pin point to something like installing a driving and it failing immediately afterwards) - just one day a message popped up to upgrade iTunes, which I did, and then rebooted to experience the issue.
Here are the steps to describe what happens with a bit more detail and troubleshooting steps tried:
Manually launch upgrade of an existing software. (Tried Evernote, iTunes, Java VM)
Successfully go through the install/upgrade.  Seems irrelevant if software asks for reboot or not.  Machine works fine until rebooted.
Reboot the machine.  Machine shuts down without any issues.
BIOS POST is successful, and Dell logo with jumping/circulating dots comes up.
There is a normal flurry of hard-disk activity for a few seconds, which after a few seconds reduces to none or sometimes/occasionally to very brief flashing a few seconds apart.  This is where the problem is noticed.  It can stay like that for
hours if not days (normal boot takes about 20-30 seconds).
Typically, if there is no hard-disk activity at all, pressing the power button causes one brief flash, followed by one more about 1-3 seconds later, and no change.
The only recourse is to force turn off by holding power button for few seconds.
Letting it try to boot again leads to the same behavior.
Repeating attempts to boot 3-4 times causes Automatic Recovery to kick in.
The only way to get the machine to boot again is to use Recovery to restore to a previous state.  This sometimes requires to be done more than once and doesn't fix on the first try.
(Also, I enabled Win boot menu, and couple of times instead of waiting for Automatic Recovery to kick in, tried to use recovery through the menu - in that case it's more likely to require the procedure to be done more than once).
I tried to do a logged boot to capture log file in one of the cases where it boots - it appears to never produce \Windows\ntbtlog.txt file (possible I didn't do something right for this one, though I thought that file is never deleted and only grows)
Additional Info:  SysRestore currently displays only two available points:
    6/13/14 - Installed Evernote v. 5.4 - Type Install
6/9/14 - Automatic Restore Point - Type System
All other previous restore points (from having installed a few more updates and software in the 1.5 years I had the machine) are gone somewhere.
Choosing to revert to the second restore point (when selecting restore point from boot menu) as opposed to the first one and later booting successfully, for some reason the same restore points are listed again (so it doesn't seem to be truly reverting)
Nothing fruitful appears in the EventLog.  The only critical messages that i see there are both from SCM and one reads "The Dell Digital Delivery Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s)." and the other "The
system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly." (which is expected).  And there is a warn level entry about some Bluetooth device not being
able to enter power save mode.  That's it for system event logs.
At this point I'm totally stuck trying to figure this one out, or even trying to figure out how to obtain information on where it gets stuck.  This is worse than having a BSOD as with BSOD at least there is some info on what's happening.  Here
I don't even see where it gets stuck or what's preventing from booting successfully.
    Please help!!!

Here is the link to the SrtTrail.txt file:
    http://1drv.ms/1sh7rCy
Again, let me clarify the situation as well as provide some additional information that I discovered since original post.  Per original post - I can boot into the system up and  until installer gets activated either by trying to uninstall or upgrade
existing software or install new one.  At the time, the only way I could get the system to boot again was to let it fail boot twice and on the third attempt let it perform system restore from a restore point, and then it would boot again (with all the
    installed/updated/uninstall changes wiped out)
Since then I discovered the following additional behavior points:
I managed to get it to accept couple of software upgrades by using roughly the following steps: let it fail boot twice.  On the third attempt instead of choosing system restore I instead cancel or choose advanced options (depending on what it offers).
Typically it goes either through some system analysis or disk check for errors - wait and it doesn't find anything.  When presented with a menu of other recovery options (like changing UEFI, command prompt, etc), I simply choose to exit and continue loading
windows.  At this point it sometimes (I'd say 1 out of 3 times) manages to boot successfully, retaining all the changes (i.e. retaining software updates and the like).  If it doesn't succeed booting, repeat until it does.  Using these steps
I managed to update most of software so far, including windows update.  But each time it's a struggle to get it to boot again.
Simply rebooting the system without any changes succeeds most of the time.  However, today I noticed that a plain reboot (without any installer/uninstaller/update or any other system/soft/config changes) doesn't always succeed, requiring the same process
as in previous bullet point to get it to boot again.
I also noticed an additional behavior - my keyboard an mouse have some buttons that are illuminated (on dell keyboard those are media buttons, and on the dell mouse it is mouse sensitivity indicator). I noticed that when windows boot up, the keyboard and
mouse lights go out simultaneously.  If they come back about a second or two later (with one flicker in between), then system boots up fine (the moment they come back, the system displays the logon screen with the seatle space needle).  However,
if they don't come back, then the boot will hang there for ever.  Is it possible that some driver sometimes succeeds to be loaded correctly, and sometimes fails to load causing Windows to perpetually wait for that driver to finish loading (which it never
does)?  If that sounds like a possibility, how can I find out what is it that windows is doing when it starts to perpetually wait for whatever it is waiting for?  Tell me what logs would help to understand that and how to capture those!
Also note that I run Avira Antivir antivirus (ever since I got this PC), and it doesn't flag anything suspicious on the system.  I also ran MalwareBytes scan which found no suspects, as well as GMER rootkit scanner (which as far as i can tell, also
    did not find anything suspicious).
There is another oddity that is going on with the system - may or may not be related, so mentioning just in case it is - which is that I'm using Dropbox, and it keeps creating "My Videos" folder on the Desktop, even though it is way outside of my dropbox
root.  Deleting the folder doesn't help as the moment I right-click on the Desktop, it re-appears.  It, oddly enough, also appears in C:\Users\{profile} folder right along side real "My Videos" folder.  Looking properties of both in explore
shows in the property pages that one is located in C:\Users\{profile} and another in C:\Users\{profile}\Desktop (and again, yet both of those explore shows in C:\Users\{profile}).  Like I said, not sure if these are related (I suspect not, but who knows),
    so mentioning just in case.
Note that I'm trying to fix it without going through refresh or reset since the first one would cause the pain to reinstall of all the software on the system (without any indication that this would solve the issue), and the later option would just completely
wipe out everything off of the system, which is even more painful, and again would not guarantee solution (e.g. if it is a bad driver that would get reinstalled anyway after wipe. Yes, I technically do have backups, but those are more for drastic case if my
harddrive crashes, and wouldn't want to rely on those to voluntarily wipe the system due to odd behaviors - too painful and time-consuming.  I'm looking for a solution to problem rather than just-start-from-the-beginning-because-it-is-easier approach.
Thanks, let me know how to get the troubleshooting info to get to root cause.
