System Bootstrapper Crash
My MacBook Pro won't boot up. I found the information online to try the Command + S and then power on. I then get the black screen and says the System bootstrapper has crashed.
I don't know what to do from this point. Is there hope? I also know that it was saying yesterday that the start-up disk was almost full. I was going to start removing large files today, but after turning it off last night and then trying to reboot this morning, I have had the failures.
The latest Snow Leopard OS is 10.6.11. The latest OS system is Mountain Lion 10.8.2
Which one do you have?

My system bootstrapper crashed. I've repaired the disk and disk permissions and still no luck
While trying to restart after downloading an iTunes update, my computer won't go past the grey screen with the apple and loading bar. When I hit command+s it says my system bootstrapper crashed. I've repaired the disk and disk permissions and it still won't load. Help!
What is your Mac OS version?

What does "The System bootstrapper has crashed: Bus error" mean ?
What does "The System bootstrapper has crashed: Bus error" mean ?
Was this an upgrade?
You could repair disk and permissions, but I suspect a corrupt OS X. I would reinstall the operating system.
COmmand R on reboot if your Mac is newer. -
System bootstrapper has crashed
Screen stay white after starting up procedure.
After boot check it's stop at "system bootstrapper has crashed"hey,
had the same problem after an update. disk utility and repairing permissions did not work out, so i downloaded and installed OS X in recovery, which took nearly 2 1/2 hours to download and install, download was once interrupted, installation clock showed -22 minutes until restarting. but now everything works fine, no loss of files. thanks for the help here.
great hint, if you work with whole encryption by filevault and you want to use system utility:
So while in Recovery Mode, open Terminal , locate the logical UUID (example: 111111-2222-3333-444444444444 ) of the disk to unlock.
"diskutil coreStorage list" will give you the UUID. After that you can unlock the drive with:
"diskutil coreStorage unlockVolume <YOUR_UUID>"
You will be asked for the Filevault password and yes, this prompt will accept your passwd if you type it right, at least you can test and see what you type in terminal while not in the password prompt.
Your drive will now be unlocked. You can now proceed with menus to reinstall Lion, reinstall from Time Machine, or use the Disk Utility......
worked great for me. also keep in mind, that after downloading OS X, before installation mode, your keyboard is set to US. i wondered for like 5 minutes what's wrong with my password... -
Bootstrapper Crash Need to Backup FileVault Home Folder Before Rebuilding
Bottom Line (yes repeated at the bottom ;-))
How do I mount the sparse bundle (FileVault created) from the limited resources available on the OS X install DVD so I can check the integrity of contents, or even just copy the contents unencrypted?
I may just take this into the Genius bar, assuming the correct Evil Genius is available, but if I can get help here it will save me the drive across town.
Background:
Power fault and a hard shutdown, now my iMac won't boot.
Backup of Home folder is about 3 months old using Backup utility (no lectures please, long story)
I would like to backup what I have before doing anything dramatic (like erasing the drive and starting over)
I am using FileVault, which I suspect will complicate things (albeit the backup I do have is unencrypted and in the safe) and was able to copy most (but not all) of the sparse bundle.
I.e., I believe both the system files and my home folder have issues.
I would be satisfied with even an unencrypted copy of the files in the home folder (FileVault sparse bundle), but I am having trouble backing anything up (I/O error, which may mean that a band inside the sparse bundle is corrupted as well).
Possibly Relevant Details:
Single User Mode (i.e., via Command-S) does not reach prompt
Instead I see several "disk0s2: I/O error." with the error details followed by "The system bootstrapper has crashed"
It does point to the specific file issues, but at this point I am less concerned with the system files than I am with the Users home folders (mine and the kids)
Using the OS X DVD and launching Disk Utility the repair disk does not work (even when repeated, which has worked on other disks before).
Invalid sibling link on Verify followed by Invalid node structure (fails trying to rebuilding the catalog b-tree... invalid node structure and invalid record count repeated several times followed by invalid key length, then repair gives up.
Disk Utility unmounts the volume and won't let it re-mount.
Managed to re-mount by forcing the drive to be the start-up disk (Power On with Option key) and then re-started again from the DVD.
Could not figure out how to force the mount from the Terminal.
Again, running from the DVD and then using Terminal I can see the volume (../../../Volumes/Macintosh\ HD) and what appears to be the contents.
On a whim I tried to copy the Users folder to an external drive and then saw the error message about the FileVaulted sparse bundle (file .mtkessel in Users)
Copying the kids home folders this way worked, so the only problem appears to be my home folder (which is a sparse bundle).
Specifically, the "I/O Error" reported by cp is in .mtkessel/mtkessel.sparsebundle/bands/1 and 10... all of the other bands and the related Info and token objects copy just fine. I suppose it is possible that those bands are ones slated for reclamation at the next logout, but I can't be sure.
So I suppose the question is how do I mount the sparse bundle (FileVault created) from the limited resources available on the OS X install DVD so I can check the integrity of contents, or even just copy the contents unencrypted?
Thanks in advance on this ugly problem...
mkIt took many hours to copy the FileVault sparsebundle (both size and device issues I suppose), but I managed to re-assemble it, including the "Rescued Items"; I just used the unix cp -R on the sparsebundle file to force the copy to report the I/O errors... about a dozen or so of the 9000+ bands are damaged.
Could not really tell if anything other than the "Rescued Items" were missing since bands can be deleted during normal use.
I then attached the sparsebundle (which is encrypted) with a shadow (i.e., this sparsebundle is not mountable)
This is the command I used from the directory containing the COPY of the sparsebundle.
hdiutil attach -encryption -noverify -ignorebadchecksums -nomount mtkessel.sparsebundle -shadow bundle.shadow
I am not entirely sure, but the shadow option allows read-only behaviors on the device to be circumvented by allowing write through the shadow...
Enter the password and then I had he "device" appeared in the dropdown menu in DW and then I was able to re-build it.
Then in Preview I was able to see a fully mounted device from which I have started copying. The damage was "easily corrected" according to DW. It may take several hours to copy as well (this time probably due to the decryption as it copies)
I am starting to experiment with the Mail import features to see if I can recover the e-mails... my first attempts of importing from both Apple mailboxes as well as mbox format did not work. And, simply copying the emlx files into the mbox destinations does not work... The items simply don't show up in Mail... I am sure I will figure it out eventually, but any advice on importing the emlx files would be much appreciated!

My system got crashed and I dont have backup fo my iphone.... now how do i synch my iphone with new itunes without loosing my data ?
See if this user-tip for syncing to a new computer helps : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
If you have music from other sources on your phone (e.g. copied from CDs) and you don't have them on a backup, then there are some program listed half-way down this page which might be able to copy them back : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991 -
System-wide crashes, WoW at center
I was playing a Strand of the Ancients last night when WoW suddenly crashed. No new addons; the application had been stable for weeks or months. When WoW crashed, other programs I was running (Firefox, Word, etc) also crashed. I restarted and tried to run WoW, but it crashed before the load screen, and the debugger also seemed to crash, loading for a second and then disappearing. Several other attempts to load the game got me as far as signing in and getting halfway into loading Strand back up, but then WoW would crash again. I ran Disk Utility to repair permissions, and OS X crashed into the gray screen of death. After the hard reboot, I managed to repair permissions and to scan the disk, neither of which showed problems. I will scan them again to post the info here.
Several reboots have all ended in the same symptoms: the system runs fine until I try to open WoW, and then everything begins to crash all over again. At this point, I have uninstalled WoW in an attempt to reinstall, but after running the InstallWoW application Safari crashed, followed in several minutes by Firefox. All internet-based applications from browsers to the Curse Client fail, usually immediately. After an attempt to open WoW, Firefox will chain crash. Without having attempted to open WoW, it will run for 5-20 minutes between crashes.
For addons, I am running the full Auctioneer (latest edition and addition, about two weeks ago) along with DBM, Omen, Overacheiver, Pallypower (disabled), Quartz, and Recount. I use Curse Client to keep most of them up-to-date.
If you need more information than I have provided here, I will need step-by-step instructions on how to retrieve it. My ignorance is why I have not provided the Firefox and OS X crash reports.
Thank you, in advance, for your help.

C:\Windows\system32\en-US\erofflps.txtHi Sue,
Does this happen with any particular file or all files?
Since the crash report above mentions accessibility.api, so are you working on any related function like adding tags etc. when Acrobat crashes?
Disable all the 3rd party services working in the background and check.
Regards,

System Preferences crash (on text-to-speech settings)
Every time I try to change text-to-speech settings under System Preferences, it crashes.
I was trying to change it because I was experiencing crashing in Skype, and Skype recommended I change the default voice for text-to-speech.
All my data on this MacBook Pro came from my old MacBook Pro via a Time Machine restore. Not sure if this info is helpful or not!
Here's the error message system preferences gives me:

Go to ~/Library/Preferences and move the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file to the Trash and restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help, uninstall Skype and see if System Preferences crashes.

System Prefs crashes on using the Update "Check Now"
Hi,
My System Preferences crashes the moment I ask the Software Update to "Check Now."
Could this be a capacity issue. I have only 1.6 GB left on my hard disk. I'm also having issues with
printing crashes from all Mac applications, but then not InDesign. This might be related, but how can I go about discovering what the problem might be? Does anyone have a few tips please. I've run Mac's First Aid from the installer disk and there were no problems.
Chris.I have only 1.6 GB left on my hard disk
Incredible that your Mac runs at all. You need at least 10GB, or 10% of your hard disk if that is greater, to run smoothly.
Leaving this any longer can result in data loss and a seriously messed up system, so clear out some debris now! -
I've only had my new iMac for a couple of weeks but I have already experencied numerous kernal panics (which I think has been corrected by removing 3rd party memory) but also at least 6 system freezes/crashes. There is no regularity to the problem. I will simply go to use the machine any everything will be locked. The mouse will not more nor do the keys on the keyboard work. My only option has been a hard restart. I've spoken to tech support and gone to the apple store and am getting different answers to the possible problem. Any ideas as to what might cause the system freeze? I have since removed all usb devices (had an external hard drive and ipad connected) to see if this corrects the problem. The Apple store told me the next option woudl be a complete software reinstall which I would prefer to avoid as I do not have access to install programs for a purchased version of office.
If you have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed, try installing the 10.6.8 combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 . Sometimes the operating system can develop some kinks, especially if Software Update has been used. Repair permissions first, apply the update, then repair permissions again. Then run Software Update to sweep up any other needed updates. A combo update includes all prior updates for that version of the operating system.
If you have Lion, there isn't a combo update for it yet, as there is only one release at 10.7.1. You can manually reapply that release from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1437 -
System Preferences crashes everytime I click on "Security", "Keyboard & Mouse", and "Sound". I got a Mighty Mouse for Christmas, and I need to change the settings of it. Everytime I click on "Keyboard & Mouse" it crashes. Can anybody help me? Thanks!
-CalebCan you create a new Spare User?
This will help you rule out user account corruption (and hardware/driver compatibility).
Also, try the normal maintenance.

Also, try removing the MM hardware, and looking for driver updates (10.4 compatibility notes) on their site... -
System drive crashed...
My system drive crashed earlier this week but thank God I had a Time Machine back up to refer to when I installed a clean version of Leopard on the brand new drive. What I am slowly learning is that some of my apps are not working now. For example Aperture keeps force closing on start up other apps are requiring me to re-register or I have to download a certain item for it to run again! What purpose is the TM backup if you have to go through that hassle? Also my screen seems to have dead pixels which are annoying me big time! I never had those issues prior to the HD crashing. Everytime I click on something on screen, it leaves a small square mark on the screen until I scroll or refresh the screen it will leave. I unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in. I checked the display settings and that all checked out fine. I just want my computer back to how I had it and was hoping that was the whole reason for the Time Machine backups but I guess wrong.

Maybe there is a way to set up Time Machine to do what I want but I never could figure it out. When I set up it originally, it was constantly backing my system up which is what we all want it to do. My issue with that is I noticed when I was not using my computer, it would not sleep because of the TM doing its job. So that is why I stopped the backups in early October. I was hoping to do backups once or twice a week but it seems like its constantly backing up.
It sounds like you have problems with your system.
Time Machine backups shouldn't run constantly, or for very long (after the first full backup). If they do, it's an indication of a problem.
And the problem with your screen is another indication, likely of hardware problems.
I did install Leopard from the disc but can't remember if I ran repair permissions after it was installed. I couldn't see my screen during the install process for some reason. I could see it but it was hard to read. Once the install was complete, then the Leopard animated video played crystal clear. There's a chance I clicked on something I shouldn't have due to not being able to read the screen good.
The fact that the welcome video played means you did an +Erase and Install.+ That did just what it says: it erased the entire contents of your system, and installed Leopard.
If you then transferred/copied/restored things from your backups, that's why you now have the 2009 version of everything.
So with all that said, what is the best option right now?
First, what version of Leopard are you now on? If your Install disc wasn't 10.5.8, and you haven't run Software Update, download and instal the "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
Whether you do that or not, run a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
Then run the +Apple Hardware Test,+ either:
[Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509].
or if it's a PPC Mac, it's on one of the disc(s) that came with your Mac, and is tailored to it's particular hardware. The disk should have +Apple Hardware Test+ and instructions for running it printed in very tiny type.
If that shows hardware problems, take it to Apple.
And do regular backups. If they run for very long when you haven't changed much, see #D4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If they seem too slow, see #D2 there. -
i am relatively new mac user and i am just learning how to configure my macbook. my trouble began when i tried to use iTunes Artwork as my screensaver. whenever i choose it, the System Preferences crashes and the mac generates a report that will be sent to Apple. i sent the said report several times already, but i don't know how long before they will be able to act on my problem.
actually, i have already used iTunes Artwork as screensaver before, but the crash happened when i changed the option for the screen saver. i tried to change the default number of rows but when i did so, the application crashed. i couldn't get the iTunes Artwork screensaver to work since then.
i am hoping that someone will be able to look into my problem and be able to give me some advice. i am really new to mac and unix so i have very little knowledge beyond what the icons can offer (i.e. i've little knowledge on how to use the command line, if such a need arises) ...
thanks.Hi Gary, and welcome to the forums.
First off, I wouldn't hold my breath on waiting to
hear back from Apple. They may use the information in
the (millions/hundreds/dozens of) crash reports they
receive to track down bugs and software errors for
future updates, but I doubt they'll actually contact
you.
The first thing to try to resolve this is to repair
permissions on your drive. Go to
Applications/Utilities and launch Disk Utility.
Select your hard drive icon from the window on the
left, then click on the "Repair Permissions" button.
If this has no effect, boot from your install cd, and
when you see the language selection window, go to the
Utilities menu at the top of the screen and launch
Disk Utility. Select your hard drive, then click on
the "Repair Disk" button (you can't repair the disk
you have booted from, which is why this button was
greyed out when you ran Disk Utility from your hard
drive). When it's done, run the "Repair Permissions"
again, then reboot from your hard drive.
If "Repair Disk" makes any repairs, run it again. If
it's still making repairs the third time you run it,
then the problem is bigger than Disk Utility can
handle. At this point, you should purchase Disk Warrior.
Good luck,
Andrew Penner
hi. thanks for the suggestions. i've already done the first of your suggestion but, still, my System Preferences crashes everytime i choose iTunes artwork as my screensaver. i'll do your second suggestion later because i just have to attend to something...
regarding your suggestions, i just wanna ask if my data will be safe if i do the "Repair Disk". i have no back up of my data so i am quite worried about those.
also, i tried making a second account (a non-admin account) to experiment on whether the problem exists there or not. it turned out that on the new account, the problem doesn't exist. i hope that this will bring some solution into light...
thanks.

System Prefs crash with iTunes Screensaver
This morning I was playing around with the iTunes Artwork screensaver in System Preferences. Everything was working fine until I set the number of rows in the screensaver to two. Now, whenever I click on the screensaver, System Preferences crashes. Does anyone know what to do? Can I reinstall the iTunes screensaver somehow?
MacBook Pro 2.0 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.7)Hey there - I actually think I fixed it! I went into System/Library/Screen Savers and moved the file iTunes Artwork.saver to the Trash. Then, I reopened System Preferences and changed the screen saver to one of the other default choices. Then, after making sure that the new screen saver worked, I just moved the iTunes Artwork.saver file back into the same place as before. Then I was able to reopen System Prefs and change the screen saver back (but I was very careful not to put it back down to two rows!) This all came about by trial and error, but I hope it helps.
