System center 2012R2 licensing suggestion.
Hello,
I am reading about system center licensing but getting more and more confused, so any help is greatly appreciated.
I want to implement SCOM to monitor following servers:
win server (90% Virtual machines) - 80 (apprx)
unix /linux server (50% Virtual machines) - 25
6 Vmware ESX host (3 with 16 and 3 with 24 processor each)
Networking switches and firewall from Dell (looks like scom monitoring is free for them)
and SCCM 2012 R2 with FEP for apprx 1200 WIN 8 client machines
also maintain inventory + FEP for above win servers.
most of my servers have single core CPU, but some of have them 4 and 2-3 have 8 virtual cores.
Now that I understand no license is needed for actual products like SCCM and SCOM, how many and which user cal's do I need in all for my clients together?
My doubts are:
- Do I need standard or datacenter approach or can it be mix
- does the sml's or client machine license covers FEP or is it separate license
- If I manage a server with both SCCM and SCOM, then 1 need just 1 SMLs not 2.
- also are they just paper license or do I need to add them in the products.
Thanks in Advance
hello,
Sytem Center 2012/2012 R2 is not complexe to understand the licensing model.
for your Servers: you nedd System Center Standard for each physical Server with 2 CPUs to manage 2 VMs.
for example: if you have one Server with 4 CPUs and 6 VMs than you Need 3 System Center Standard or 1 System Center datacenter.
if you have one Server with 2 CPUs and 8 VMs than you Needs: 4 std or 1 datacenter.
2. for Clients: you Needs 1200 Systen Center Configuration Manager Client mangement License(CML) + 1200 System Center Endpoint Protection as a subscription in open value for example.
3. if you manage for example one Server with 2 CPUs and 2 VMs with SCCM and SCOM than you Need only 1 System Center Standard while the compenents of System Center 2012 are all included on the std or datacent suites. standalone compenents will no longer
be sold separately.
4. you Need to add System Center products on your Server products.
I hope that my Suggestion clear to understand it(my english is not very good!)
thanks

System Center 2012R2 Storage Pool Deduplication?
I am trying to find out if it is possible to deduplicate data on a System Center 2012R2 Storage Pool on Server 2012R2. I am aware that DPM will back up deduplicated data in a deduplicated state, but this is about deduplicating data backed
up from multiple sources. Searching shows me that deduplicating System Center 2012 Storage Pools on Server 2012 was not supported, but the threads I found that showed this either had screenshots or quotes of the information instead of links to the documentation.
Is it possible/supported to deduplicate data within a System Center 2012R2 Storage Pool on Server 2012R2?Hi,
Yes, if you virtualize your DPM server, it is possible to enable deduplication of DPM storage pool disks.
Please see the following white paper:
Deduplicating DPM storage
We are working on a better solution long term.

System Center 2012 license question
Hi all, a general question regarding system center 2012 software assurance (didn't find any appropriate thread hence posting this here as SCCM is the main component in the suite)
Q: I came across 'software assurance' in the licensing document which is part of system center 2012 suite purchase (STD or DC edition). I wanted to know if we would like to extend the SA period beyond the first 3 years, how it works? Do we need to extend
the contract for an additional 3 year term (product suite + SA) or an annual basis?
thanks!https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/servicecenter/Help/Contact.aspx

System Center 2012R2 Tapeless Storage Pool Backup
I'm not sure exactly what to search for here, but I tried "Disk to Disk to Disk" and "Private Cloud" without much luck. I want to back up to disk and then back up the storage pool to a private off site location (but for all practical
purposes, I could be backing up the storage pool to another storage pool on-site as far as the servers know, depending on how I configure the networking). Since the location is actually off-site, I don't want to do full backups of the storage pool, I
want to do differencing backups so that the amount of data transferred off-site is minimal. Old revisions of the off-site storage only need to last weeks or months, not years, so tapes (virtual or otherwise) would ideally not be involved.
The only things my searches turned up seemed to advise using virtual tapes and the like, but I'm concerned about that meeting my needs. Specifically, if I'm using virtual tapes, I would expect a full backup to be required any time I wanted to purge
incremental backups. In other words, with virtual tapes, I believe (perhaps mistakenly?) that my options are to have my storage needs grow infinitely or my data transfer needs skyrocket occasionally, and neither of those are good options.
Is backing up one storage pool to another supported? If not, is there something I'm missing with in regards to how a virtual tape option would work? If not, is there some other way to achieve this goal (for instance, effectively be creating
my own local Azure storage destination or something)?Hi,
The two best options are using a Secondary DPM server or enabling online backups to Azure. Both will perform true incremental backups for DPM protected data sources and provide DR solutions off premise.

Management Point, System Center License required?
Hi
If I am setting up a Windows Server as an additional Management point and Distribution Point. Does it need a System Center server license?
/ALXNo. You only need a license for servers and workstations you want to manage (not the management servers)
http://www.micromail.com/files/admin/uploads/W285_Field_2_65088.pdf
However, MS licensing is a minefield and all organisations have different benefits. You need to contact your Microsoft License reseller for best information.

System Center Licensing, SQL Server
We want to implement four System Center 2012 components (SCOM, SCDPM, SCCM, SCVMM). We have 4 SC Datacenter licenses. How do we license the 4 SQL servers we need for these components (as SQL license is included in the SC license)? Should I apply the same
license of SC to SQL during installation? Is it a valid option of licensing the SQL ?
What about the licensing of the operating system (Windows Server 2012 R2) where I am going to install SC components? Can it use the same SC license or does it need one on its own?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Megi ShyleHi Megi Shyle
System Center 2012 R2 includes a license for SQL Server Standard (if you need to run SQL Server Enterprise you will need to license this separately).
The Windows Server license is not included as part of the System Center 2012 R2 license.
You can find out more about licensing from:
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/SystemCenter2012-R2.aspx#tab=2
You can also get more information from the
System Center 2012 R2 Licensing Guide and your Microsoft account contact or licensing contact can also provide answers that are specific to your situation.

Richard

How to check System Center Service manager 2012 R2 license version
Hi,
I have installed Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Service manager 3months before but do not have remember whether I put permanent license key or evaluation, can anyone please let me know how can I check whether this is evaluation or permanent license?
Warm Regards, Pramod Kumar Singh Manager-ITHi,
During setup of the retail edition of System Center 2012 – Service Manager, you have the option of performing the installation without a product key and instead installing Service Manager as an evaluation edition. The evaluation
edition times out 180 days after installation. If you start with an evaluation version of Service Manager and you rerun Setup and install the retail edition or select edition, and you decide to use the existing databases that you created originally,
your installation will time out after the original expiration date.
I summarize the following steps and hopefully it will help you.
You could find the install date on :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\System Center\2010\Service Manager\Setup"
Try to change the system time from install date to install date + 180days.
If you can't open the console again, you are evaluation Edition.
Rerun Setup to install Retail Edition or Select Edition.
For more information, please review the links below:

Can I use System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection in Azure Virtual Machine Gallary's "Windows Server Remote Desktop Session Host" without buy the System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection license ?
I want to protect my Azure RemoteApp against the malware.
System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection installed Azure Virtual Machine Gallary's "Windows Server Remote Desktop Session Host".
Now, I try to build Azure RemoteApp template by using the Azure Virtual Machine Gallary's "Windows Server Remote Desktop Session Host" .
Regards,
Yoshihiro KawabataHi Yoshihiro,
Unless and until Microsoft modifies the license terms for System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection and/or modifies the Online Services Terms (OST) and/or other document explicitly saying that use is included with the Azure RemoteApp (ARA) monthly
fee I recommend you assume as that it is
not included and license it separately for ARA if that is even possible, which is a separate question.
For licensing it is best to be cautious and make decisions based on the official documents that are available that govern use of the software and services involved. At this moment I'm not able to find a Microsoft document that grants use of System
Center 2012 Endpoint Protection with Azure RemoteApp.
When I first used the gallery template and noticed that Endpoint Protection was installed within it I had the same question as you. I will update this thread if/when I obtain more information.

Please clarify license about server managed and configuration manager client ML system center 2012
Could clarify why managed servers License required ,already we bought the configuration manager client ML License ? We are planing to buy system center operation manager 2012
Hello,
if you wants planing to Monitoring your AD with Exchange Server and you have only one physical Server with for example 2 CPUs and 2 VMs, you need to purchase the System Center Standard 2012 R2 SML for Monitoring your Server environement. However, if
your AD is a datacenter or for example 4 x Windows Server Standard with 8 VMs than, you need to purchase the System Center datacenter SML.
the System Center SML is licensed per physical Server: one license up to two physical CPUs. if you have for 2 physical Hosts with 2 CPUs each, you need to purchase two System Center licenses.
the only difference between Standard and datacenter is only about virtualization rights
for System Center Operation Manager for your Clients Desktop, you need to purchase the System Center Client Management Suite includes: Operation Manager; Services Manager; Data Protection Manager and Orchestrator.
thanks

System Center Endpoint Protection Licensing?
Hi there,
I want to implement System Center 2012 R2 Endpoint Protection in the business. We have a Silver membership, so we do have the license for System Center 2012 R2. What I don't get is if Endpoint protection is separate or not from a licensing point of view.
Do we have to pay for subscriptions or not? And how much? It's just confusing because Microsoft doesn't make it clear. Sure I can install SCCM....but that is pointless if I can't use Endpoint Protection.
Thx in advanceHi,
About SCEP, it depends upon the client ML you purchased, is either included or additional.
You could find more information from the following link.

managing database backups across all the instances without maintenance plan
Samuel Lester: "Chandra, outstanding contribution and information! Your SSIS package handles many of the shortcomings of Maintenance Plans. MPs were originally created to assist DBAs with the more common administrative
tasks, but as the scale continues to grow across enterprise environments, we're all forced to write our own enhanced versions such as this. Thanks for the addition and please do add to the Gallery if you haven't yet."

NN: "Good article. The SSIS solution can use a bit more explanation. Also See Also section is missing"

on age of the backup, but it creates the problem when it deletes the full database backups based on n no.of days leaving all the dependent intermediate differential and transaction logs which are useless. "

I am trying to use system center to manage my Azure enviorment
I am freaking lost!!!!
I have a Widows Azure environment that i'm trying to manage using system center ( apparently this is the bee's knees cause every post is about it)
So I attempt to install Microsoft System Center and I got something now on a 2012 server called Virtual Machine manager... I am assuming this is not the product I need to manage my windows azure solution so now i'm back to square one. can someone please
help me with this???
what download do I need to install system center on a windows machine to get this working?!?!
Please help!!hi,
It seems like the issue is not related to PAAS. I suggest you could refer to those tutorials
2012 configuration manager sp1 lab in the cloud and
how to monitor your windows azure application with system center 2012 and this blog(https://blogs.technet.com/b/keithmayer/archive/2013/04/01/build-your-private-cloud-in-a-month-new-article-series.aspx#.Ux1QJHnxsic
). You could down load System Center files form
this page.
By the way, I suggest you could post this issue on azure
VM forum for more details and better support.
