System Center Data Protection Manager 2010: DPM server cannot inventory

Hi All,
I'm using DPM 2010 running on Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. I have attach Tape libraries to the server.
I saw ibm totalstorage 3573 tape library. then I click inventory but it failed as below:
The detailed inventory of tape failed for the following reason: (ID 3316). DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of required drive resources is not online or
it needs cleaning or servicing.
Recommended action
1) View and resolve all alerts for the library and its drive(s). Retry the operation after resolving the alerts.
2) Go to the Library tab in the Management pane and click on Rescan. Once the rescan operation has completed successfully, retry the operation.
What should I do? Do you have any solution?

Khemarin

Hi Khemarin,
In the error it states that one tape drive isn't online. Go to your device manager and verify that all of your tape drives and your media library is ok. Does all the tape drives show up in the DPM console?
If everything looks ok but you still got the problem please try to use DPMDriveMappingTool.exe to remap the tape drives.

  • VssNullProver stopped after installing Update Rollup 3 for System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2

I recently installed Update Rollup 3 for System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2.
As part of the update I updated all DPM Agents, including the ones on our Hyper-V Servers (which are part of a cluster). I also rebooted every DPM Protected Servers. After reboot all Hyper-V Servers raise a warning that the VssNullProvider service has stopped.
Backup seems to work properly. I can start the VssNullProvider service manually. But after the next backup the service it is stopped again. Exactly the same issue occurs on our test Hyper-V Cluster. All our Hyper-V Servers run Windows Server 2012 R2 and
we use System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2.
Something is not ok with Update Rollup 3. Any suggestions?

  • Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager

    Hi,
I have two DPM (2012r2)servers, one is member of the domain, second is workgroup configuration.
I installed Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager, I have no problem connecting to DPM domain member.
Can I connect to the workgroup DPM server with System Center Data Protection Manager?
    Thanks,
    Lior

    Hi
The DPM server itself must be a member of a domain. DPM will not work if the server is in a workgroup configuration.

  • Tape Consumption/Utilization on System Center Data Protection Manager 2012

    Hi Guys,
I have setup System Center DPM 2012 for Exchange 2010 Backup, the tape library that i am using is Dell TL4000 with 45 Slots and two LTO 5 Drives. The total size of Exchange backup is 33 TB but the no. of tapes used to backup are 16 LTO5 tapes.
The native capacity of LTO5 tape is 1.5 TB and the compressed capacity is 3 TB.
The total no. of tapes used for exchange backup are 16 therefore 16 Tapes x 3 TB = 48 TB where as the total backup size of exchange is 33 TB which means there is a complete wastage of 15 TB tape storage.
Does any one know if its a known issue on DPM? Is there a way where i can tweak the tape utilization? Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!
    Sajeel

    Hi,
The LTO5 compression ratio is usually an average of 2:1 depending on the data being written.  Some data is not compressible like .jpg .bmp etc. so it's not predictable ahead of time how much data will fill a tape.  The fact
that you are achieving greater than native capacity shows that compression is enabled and working.
Besides the data not compressing as much as you like, the only other explanation for not getting more data on a tape is it may not be filling before we either get an EOM from the drive, or we get an IO error that DPM is going to convert to an EOM.
To see if it is the latter check the DPMRA Errlogs for the error code 0x8007045D.
    Open an Administrative command prompt.
    CD C:\Program file\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\Temp
    Find /I "0x8007045D" DPMRA*.Errlog >C:\temp\DPMRA0x8007045D.TXT
    Notepad C:\temp\DPMRA0x8007045D.TXT

  • Recover Child Data Source - System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 SP1

I'm trying to write a script that, given an input file, recovers data from 1st of the month redirected to a folder.
It's all working, but I need to be able to restore only a folder from a D: drive that is protected for instance.
how can I restore a folder and it's contents from powershell? I can restore and redirect a whole drive for the recovery point I want, but I can't figure out how to restore a childdatasource. I've identified the cds, but how can I make that a recoverableitem
    to feed the recover cmdlet?
    Mark

Child data source isn't the way to do this, I should have checked each recoverable item in the recovery point, that would like the top level items such as top level folders/vm's/sql dbs, etc.

  • Data Protection Manager 2010 Lost disks, trying to add new disks.

Have some problems with DPM 2010. I run it with a HP server with  HP disk shelf and a HP tape-robot. Had some problems and the RAID on the disk shelf, and the raid got corrupted. Had to  delete it and create a new raid. When starting DPM now I
get missing disks on all protection groups. I deleted some of the protection groups, and created new ones, and that works well. But it is kind of a lot of protection groups. And DPM is extremely slow. Deleting a protection group takes somewhere between 15-45
minutes. Adding them back even longer. The screen where I expand computers in the domain to view shares or SQL-servers might have some timeout issues. It takes about 10-15 minutes just to list the content of one computer.Made a protection group from a SQL-server
and it uses about 10 minutes just formatting for each database.
I ran DpmSync -ReallocateReplica last night and it was done this morning. Now all protection groups states they will need to be manually backuped. Not really sure what that is about. Installed the latest hotfixes for DPM now, and restarted.
During the next restart it started running chkdsk automatically. And it is finding incorrect segments and corrupted data basically everywhere. Read somewhere that you should´t use Chkdsk with DPM volumes. But at the time it can`t really break anymore.
But what I`m really wondering is, what to do when you lose your replicastore drives. And add new ones without having to delete and create new protection groups?
Ps: I´m Norwegian, so my sentences might be a bit strange.
Edit: the chkdsk took forever, aborted it and deleted the raid volumes again. created new volumes, removed the old volumes from dpm-pool and added the new one. Ran dpmsync -reallocatereplica then dmpsync -sync. When this was done I openend the DPM 2010 Admin
Console. All protectiongroups was marked as inconsistent, started consistencycheck on all protectiongroups. Which probably will take the rest of the weekend. I removed the protectiongroup for exchange and fileserver since it would take forever to complete
a consistencycheck. Kind of stupid that I have to run the consistencycheck and not take a backup, since the disks are empty. Should have been a way to scrap the replica and take a new replica backup.

    Hi,
After fixing the faulty raid-array and adding the newly created disk into the DPM Storage pool, running DPMSYNC -REALLOCATEREPLICA is the correct thing to do.  That will remake all the volumes required for each of the protected data sources and
then require a consistency check (CC).
Since the new volumes are all blank, the CC is basically just performing a new Initial replication by copying the protected data back to the new replica volume.  Don't get hung up on the job type (CC, initial Replication, Recovery Point) as the bottom
line is DPM is fixing the problem so new synchronizations and recovery points can be made.

This is a DPM supportability issue, I believe. Last I heard, no it was not supported. SharePoint 2013 does not support SQL 2014 until the April 2014 CU. The CU should be out soon, although it appears to have been delayed (usually comes out on Patch Tuesday,
    which was this past Tuesday).

  • Data Protection Manager 2012 - Inconsistent when backing up Deduplicated File Server

    Protected Server
Server 2012 File Server with Deduplication running on Data drive
    DPM Server
    Server 2012
Data Protection Manager 2012 Service Pack 1
We just recently upgraded our DPM server from DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 primarily because it is supposed to support Data Deduplication. Our primary File server that holds our home directories etc. is limited on space and was quickly running low so just after
we got DPM 2012 in place we optimized the drive on the file server which compressed the data about 50%. Unfortunately shortly after enabling deduplication the protected shares on the deduplicated volume are getting a Replica is Inconsistent error.
I continually get Replica is Inconsistent for the Server that has deduplication running on it. All of the other protected servers are being protected as they should be. I have run a consistency check multiple times probably about 10 times and it keeps going
back to Replica is inconsistent. The replica volume shows that it is using 3.5 TB and the Actual protect volume is 4TB in size and has about 2.5 TB of data on it with Deduplication enabled.
This is the details of the error
    Affected area:   G:\
    Occurred since: 1/12/2015 4:55:14 PM
Description:        The replica of Volume G:\ on E****.net is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with
consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.
For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)

Steps taken to resolve - I’ve spent some time doing some searches and haven’t found any solutions to what I am seeing. I have the data deduplication role installed on the DPM server which has been the solution for many people seeing similar issues. I have
also removed that role and the added it back. I have also removed the protected server and added it back to the protection group. It synchronizes and says consistent then after a few hours it goes back to inconsistent. When I go to recovery it shows that I
have recovery points and it appears that I can restore but because the data is inconstant I don’t feel I can trust the data in the recovery points. Both the protected server and the DPM servers’ updates are managed via a WSUS server on our network.
You may suggest I just un-optimize the drive on the protected server however after I have optimized the drive it takes a large amount more of space to un-optimize it (Anyone know why that is) anyways the drive isn’t large enough to support un-optimization.
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advanced.

  • Data Protection Manager - Protection Groups

    Hi Everyone,
I want to reorganize my DPM 2010 configuration.
I have a tape library directly connected to a DPM 2010 server, wich contains 22 usable tapes. At the moment i have about 25 servers, devided in 5 Protection Groups. Tape co-location is enabled.
I figured that all selected data sources of all servers in all protection groups, fit on 1 tape. However, with co-location enabled, DPM sometimes fills up a previously used tape, before using a free or expired one.
    Now my question;
Is it smart to put all the 25 servers in 1 single protection group and disable co-location?
In that way everyday only a single tape is used for all the backups. Also the weekly backups will only use 1 tape. It creates a nice overview for me. All servers can use the same schedule.
What is your opinion on this?

    Think that it helps you

  • Interesting SCOM Reports and "Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 Reports" MP Issue , Some reports appear others don't

Our test environment is quite simple one Operations Server 2012 R2; with the database and SSRS instance on another server; Service Manager 2012 is on it’s own virtual machine; and the Service Manager Data Warehouse on it’s own. I’ve been trying to demo chargeback
with scvmm and I’m having issues with the chargeback reporting.
I’ve followed this process to install chargeback reports:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj614406.aspx which
completed successfully. All of the cubes seem to process correctly in Service Manager and I can create a chargeback analysis excel sheet with no issues in service manager. I still do not get any chargeback reports in the Operations console though. I get some
reports under the “Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 Reports” heading like Capacity, Host Group Forecasting, Host Utilization, etc but no chargeback report.
I can see the chargeback report in the SSRS website but cannot get it to appear in the Operations console. If anyone has any tips or troubleshooting they can point me at I would appreciate it.
