System Clean Install because of IP address issues
HI,
I just did a clean re-install of Snow Leopard as I had been having the self-assigned IP address issues that so many snow leopard users have been having. Before doing this I used time machine to make a backup of my HD on an external HD and synced my iphone 4 with the computer.
Now I am hoping to get all of my music back, as well as my contacts, but can't seem to access either of those individually on my external HD using time machine or manually.
Also I am worried about plugging in my iPhone to the computer and syncing with iTunes, as if I do, I may lose my lifetime's collection of music altogether. Clearly I should have backed up this music on an extra external HD in addition to the time machine backup, but didn't think to do that.
What are my options? Will it erase the music on my iphone if I sync, or will it pull the music off of it and back into my library? What about Mail and Address book etc?
any help would be appreciated
Normal iTunes syncing with an iPhone is one-way - computer to iPhone. If you try to sync the iPhone without your old library then you will indeed wipe everything off the iPhone. There are numerous utilities around such as Pod To Mac - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - that can be used to transfer from the iPhone/iPod to the computer as well as ones that can mount the iPhone/iPod as a disk drive so you can transfer data between computer and iPhone/iPod. For example, PhoneDisk.

Windows 7 clean install on U500-1DD activation issues
Hello,
I have a problem with my newly purchased U500-1DD notebook. I didn't like the way the auto-manager partitioned the hard-drive, so I went ahead and formatted all partitions and split them according to my needs. The problem is that the laptop, although it came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, didn't have the Windows 7 install cd/dvd nor any other ultility cd/dvd's. I went and downloaded a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit from Microsoft's MSDNA whatever, installed it, but when I try to activate it using the cd-key on the sticker on the back of the laptop, it says invalid cd-key.
I rechecked the cd-key and I wrote it correctly. On the sticker it says Windows 7 Home Prem OA . Do I need a special Win7 kit or something ?
Thanks in advance.Hi -- I couldn't find the "message user" button.
I have a similar problem -- well, I'm not there yet, I'm in the planning stages of replacing my laptops harddrive. I wanted to do a clean install of Windows 7, and I have the "Windows 7 Home Prem OA" product key on the sticker slapped to the bottom of the laptop, but I do not have an OEM copy/iso of Windows 7.
I suppose I could wait for the call in thing to happen, but I would like to have everything ready and set in stone before I dive into this project.
Now, I've seen that you can get the OEM version off of torrents, but I don't really like that idea. I've never trusted torrents, and with something as important as an entire operating system I REALLY don't trust torrents.
So, my question is did they give you an official link to the OEM iso? If they did, I would really be that. (and, if it's up on an official website, I don't think there's any problems with posting the address here)
Thanks! -
Windows 7 Clean Install Crashing. Diagnosed Driver Issue.
Late 2011 iMac 21"
OS X 10.7.5
Fresh OEM Install of Genuien WIndows 7 Professional (Up to date)
Windows crashes intermitently while using the machine. *Crash = loss of video / power
The machine will run for days without issue if no user input is being provided and sitting at the Windows Log In screen.
Event logs indicate that this error occurs immediatly (less than 1 second) prior to the crash log entry:
The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device ACPI\ACPI0008\4&1fe8558&0
Googling the driver and error results provides a VERY wide scope of issues pleguing the Microsoft community.
At first I thought maybe it was the 3rd party IR mouse, so I tested the machine with a generic Windows wired USB mouse which yeilded the same result: System crash after some time using the machine. Does anyone know how I can find out what device the system is attempting to load the driver for and our what the driver is used for.
One possibly impirtant note about all this. They system will not power back on after the crash until I reset the SMC. Then the machine will powerup and boot ok. I asume this is just a consequence of the machine shutting down improperly, just not used to seeing that as it infrequently happens on the OS X side.
I need to get this issue resolved as I know it can cause damage to the hard drive with the frequent unexpected shutdowns.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.Update: The machine also powers down unexpectidly when the display powers off due to energy saver preferences. However, it will also power off prior to that timeframe of 15 minutes as well. Attempted in a test user environment and I get the same result. I don't believe this is a hardware issue as the machine can be used for hours while booted into OS X without issue. Maybe it's just time to buldoze WIndows and start fresh again? I have 3 other machines with the exact same configuration setup at the same time and no issues.

Totally Clean Install of System, now how do I import my movies?
Hi guys,
I have totally installed a brand new leopard and all apps etc on a brand new HD. I have copied over about 300GB of Imovie 08 content (events, clips, projects) from my old user/movies folder to the new HD'd user/movies folder.
Is this the right way to go?
I have both HD in the machine, old and new, and when everything is transfered I aim to wipe the original HD and use it for TimeMachine.
I guess I am asking if I should have imported the old material via imovie or is moving the movies folder sufficient?
Thanks.I looked up smiliar questions on the groups here. I managed to retrieve most of my data from my old Lion upgrade from Time Machine. The one thing I can't retrieve is keychain.login from Time Machine which as I understand has all my passwords. I used the Option key to find the user directory, but I can't find it through Time Machine. If worse comes to worse I still have my old Lion back up and I can restore that. I like this cleaner install because as I stated above it's quicker.

Clean Install confusion persists
In a previous thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8559606#8559606
some questioned my continued desire to ensure users not get confused between clean install and archive and install. Rest assured, there are good reasons to clarify what's clean install versus archive and install.
1. Mac OS 8 and 9 used "Clean Install" to refer to a process most similar to 10.2 and higher's "Archive and Install."
2. Book authors of Mac tech support have inconsistently used the term "Clean Install" to sometimes mean "Erase and Install," and sometimes "Archive and Install."
3. Archive and Install can yield unpredictable results when installing an older over a newer system. This was not a problem with Mac OS 8 and 9's Clean Install because in Mac OS 8 and 9 no dependencies for the operating system were outside the System Folder, whereas in Mac OS X there appear to be a few that are not covered.
When users request help and say they have "clean installed" I continue to ask for clarification, because I have no idea whose "book" they believe to be fact, and whose book they don't, and I want to make sure they have not put themselves in a situation where Archive and Install can fail, or where they have not backed up their data prior to erasing their hard drive, or are not about to put themselves in one of these situations.
Message was edited by: a brodyMy opinion is that sometimes the context of a post makes it clear what is meant by a "clean" install, sometimes it doesn't, ... & usually it doesn't matter.
Sure, posts would be a little clearer if everyone used proper terminology like "Archive & Install" or "Erase & Install" but remember that for many (maybe most?) topics it matters just as much if potentially "dirty" items were retained or added back to the new install afterwards.
For an Erase & Install this can & often does happen because Migration/Setup Assistant runs automatically & offers to migrate all manner of items from a backup into the "clean" (here meaning "fresh") install. For an Archive & Install it often happens because the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" option is selected. Even when it is not, items from the Previous Systems folder may be manually dragged back into the current one or placed there by other means.
Some users are aware that doing any of these things compromises the "cleanliness" of the final result & some aren't. But my point is if they said they did an "Archive & Install" or an "Erase & Install" instead of a "clean install" it would be no clearer if they did or did not retain or add back suspect items. Unless users are very clear about exactly what they did, we still would need to ask for clarification.

Do you guys know if this is a bug?
I created a custom USB Yosemite installer using the 'createinstallmedia' binary inside the Yosemite installer.
Booted iMac with this USB installer and proceeded to install Yosemite (fresh formatted drive). No problems.
When I log in however, and check the Sharing PreferencePane, both Screen Sharing and Remote Login are turned on.
I've tried this multiple times (repartitioning the drive each time and I have created the installer media twice).
I'm posting this I guess more as a report as the solution is simple enough (uncheck these services).
But it's definitely a security risk.Just 2 minutes before I received your reply I solved the problem. I have been running a software firewall (DoorStop X) on the Mac Pro. It turns out that I had not allowed traffic over two ports necessary for Home Sharing– port 3689 and udp port 5353. When I corrected this everything is back to normal.
I did the clean install because I've been having intermittent problems with several apps including Compressor, Safari, and to a lesser extent FCP. I've been contemplating doing this for several months because of all the garbage that has collected on my system over several years since I last started from scratch. I have a bad habit of installing things that add kext files and otherwise modify the OS. I decided to get rid of all that stuff. I'm glad I did. All the problems I was having seem to have resolved. Safari runs 3x faster than it ever has. And I no longer have the headaches that Compressor was giving me. I think I'll take better care of my system from now on.

We have a MacBook w.w Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo that needs a clean install because it ejects commercial CDs. It accepts all other media and empty CDs. We own a disk for OS Leopard 10.5 and the disks for the 15 inch MacBook Pro 10.5.6. Can we use the 10.5.6 disks for this installation or do we have to start with the old Leopard and update?
Thanks for your reply Sig. I have been through the hardware issues to the point of having a new superdrive installed. The issue has not been resolved which leads me to believe that it is a software issue that the service center did not deal with. The only action left at this point is a clean install to see if this will take care of the problem. The computer is my daughters and her original disks are in another country. She is home on vacation right now and I would like to solve this issue for her. I have a Mac OSX Leopard Install DVD version 10.5 that, as you said, should work. I am trying to confirm that.

HP Stream 13 tried clean install windows 10. Big Problem
EDIT: I have am HP Stream 13 that came with 8.1 The hard drive ont hese things is not large enough to compleate the upgrade to windows 10. So i preformed a clean install from a USB. Now i have 10 and it is not activated. NOW I read that you MUSST preform the upgrade first in order for windows to detect your hardware and register it as valis for the free windows 10. BUT since upgrade was not posible I have a windows 8.1 key that is useless since there is no service to change the key to a windows 10 key.. This is insane. these laptops are being advertisd with the free upgrade to windows 10 yet are not able to be upgraded. Not sure what to do now. I am running a new HP stream 13 touchscreen with windows 8.1 I want to upgrade to windows 10 before I am back to school (before i have to install all kinds of software and files) Obciously the Stream does not have enough SSD left to preform the upgrade. I have created a clean install USB thumb drive but am worried about using it. From what i have read the recovery partition that is not deleteable houses files that the system accesses. When i do a Clean install wiping the C drive (but not the partition) will everything work? will i loose the use of that partition space forever? and lastly I used a program to access my windows key since it is located in the bios not on a sticker but I want to know if anyone else has done this and did it auto detect? or did they run in to any problems. Sorry if this is all posted somewhere else but i am not finding any information at all. EDIT! I do have a USB recovery that i can use if i must to windows 8.1 I installed 10 from a USB and it is workign fine other than it is now saying my KEY isnt valid for this clean install. How do i convert my 8.1 key to a key that will work for 10? I cant see myself buying a new key from microsoft when the laptop was sold with an advert saying free upgrade to 10. It isnt posible to do a upgrade because of the space required for the upgrade to do its work. this is a real pain.
Hi, 1. You can have this option: create a Recovery media (USB key) then delete the Recovery partition, this will give you more room.2. Not 100% work unless Windows 10 or you can dind all drivers for your computer. Again, to get more space, you can delete Recovery partition but please create a Recovery set/media first.3. I upgraded 5 laptops on weekend inluding 2 HP laptops. I used tool to get the keys by Windows 10 upgrade (not clean install) could detect the keys in BIOS. I still have few more laptops and my children laptops I will upgrade. I won't do clean install because I don't want to spend time to re-install all programs/applications again. Regards.

Clean install of Lion....now how to get back my
I did a clean install of Lion on a bare drive. I prefer this much more than the upgrade from Snow Leopard. There's no lag and the system is speedier by comparison.
I have my full back up of Lion prior to the reinstall on Time Machine. I plugged Time Machine back and tried to reintall some files, but instead is ready to add to the back ups, doesn't prompt to format the drive, and I can't go back to put my photos, music, videos, and etc. I also want to restore Keychains since I have used it over the past year for all my online accounts.
Any suggestions is very much appreciated.I looked up smiliar questions on the groups here.

Clean install of Maverick on my iMac
Hi,
I have an early 2009 24" iMac and ever since my initial purchase, I upgraded my OS to the latest version, and now I have Mavericks. But my machine is performing slower and slower (even before Mavericks). Even for simple tasks like browsing a page with Safari, it takes minutes ! I'm not sure if my machine is adware free, because many ads popup, or are build in the html page.
Anyway, I decided to start all over again with a clean install of Maverick, and only restore the necessary files and apps I need and not the stuff I downloaded during the past 5 years, and never used it again. I also want to add an extra 4GB RAM up to 8GB.
I already did some research and build a bootable Maverick on USB, so I'm prepared to do the clean install.
But before going on, I want to be absolutely sure, I can restore the things I need.
So what is the best method, to take a backup of :
1) My iTunes files (music, apps, videos, books,...)
2) My personal data (documents, ....)
3) My software (most of them I don't have the installation files anymore)
4) My iPhoto library
I also took a backup on my Time Machine, but I read somewhere that this is not ideal for restoring after a clean install, because Time Machine won't recognize the new machine anymore.
So before plugin in my bootable USB drive , please help me out on choosing the right way to backup (and restore) the things I want..For your iTunes stuff, photos, and documents, you can just navigate to the media files or documents on Time machine and restore them to your new installation.
For the software, I'd get updated versions of good installers, either on disc, or from new downloads, and make sure they are compatible with Mavericks. Just dragging the app over won't work very well.
I wouldn't reinstall any "crapware", such as MacKeeper or CleanMyMac, or anything else that purports to "optimize", "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. If you have this stuff on your Mac, that is probably what is making it slow in the first place.
Antivirus software, also problematic, and not that useful on Macs; I wouldn't install it.
For any peripherals, look for updated versions of drivers or other software from the manufacturer and install those. Old drivers and kernel extensions are not going to play well with Mavericks.
I just did a clean install. I found it useful to make a list of everything I wanted to move, and wrote down passwords, network settings, and email settings. -
After clean install, where are my photos?
I did a clean install because the computer was so slow (iMac Intel-OS 10.8.2). After the clean install I could not find any of my photos. I checked Library and Application Support. There is no iPhoto file in the Library. I have complete backups on Time Machine.
Heeeelp!!
Bob CooperIf you did a clean install then you wiped your computer completely clean, BDAqua is spot on. Restore from your backup.

I've had problems for months with CC desktop failing when I boot up (for some reason it always tries to update itself and fails). The normal reinstall won't work until I jump through hoops to uninstall CC desktop. So, today I decided to bite the bullit and uninstalled PS CC and Bridge CC to see if a clean install would clear my continuing issue. The Adobe techs just have a script that can get me up today, but I am in same boat again tomorrow. Did the uninstall of CC desktop, uninstall of PS CC and Bridge CC and then reinstalled CC desktop. So far so good. Next used CC desktop to reinstall PS CC (very long download) and upon reinstall get error U44M1P7 and message the installation succeeded, but a patch failed.
Desktop CC shows that I need to update PS, so I try. Again get error U44M1P7.
Why is this so hard? I never had these problems before CC?Go back to http://forums.adobe.com/community/creative_cloud and, in the area just under Ask a Question, type in

One of my main goals is to be able to run a Windows application on my iMac, purchased in July, 2012, with the Intel 2.5Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive. At first I installed Boot Camp and then Win 7, then the application I need to run, and I don't recall having problems. But I tired of the required reboot each time and got greedy and needy - so I installed VMWare Fusion, only to be told that the W7 software I use won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels! So, I was able to get Parallels at a discount (because I had Fusion), and decided I would import Boot Camp into Parallels.
Then the problems began. I suspect I did something I shouldn't have during this process, but to shorten the story I did a clean install of ML, set up iCloud, and monitored Console for problems. And problems there were - lots of them, and they all seemed to reference iCloud in some way. Since I have the ML installer on a thumb drive I thought I'd see what happened if I did another clean install, but this time I'd ignore iCould altogether (yes, I have everything backed up to mypcback.com) and proceeded. As before, the errors streamed down Console's face as if it were my own. I've run OnyX, which seemed to help, but many of the issues persist. I'm at a loss as how to proceed other than invoke Apple Support, which, BTW, is not covered under Warranty.
I need to have a stable ML platform before I start using W7 and refuse to believe that the OSX is "just buggy." Can someone help. I have no other iDevices that need to be synced, and really don't see the need to set up iCloud. Noone else than I use the iMac. It should be pretty simple to create a stable OSX so I can go where I need to go. I realize 4GB is not a lot of memory and will look into that. For the moment, I can stip down Win 7, and OSX for that matter, to free up memory. I didn't want to included a bunch of log files, but I will if someone thinks that it would be helpful.
The follow are the latest entries into my system log file, after I lost connection to the internet, and then regained connection after rebooting my cable modem:

This DNS change is only the lastest manifestation of what seems like an endless list. Can anybody give me some direction before I have to pay Apple to fix what I think they broke themselvesa?!? BTW, I am not a tech. Thanking everyone who read this and especially to anyone who can help.Linc, thanks for the tips. I knew you'd have a good method. I asked for it because I have learned of some of the myths about OSX and it's need (or lack thereof) to be scrubbed, rinsed, and blown dry; suckering folks into buying all manner of utilities to keep your Mac spiffy at all times, when in fact it rarely needs any intervention at all because of its Unix background. In fact, I rarely shut mine down and I've learned that the system is actually designed to be left running under most circumstances.
To keep your data secure the three most important things to know is backup, backup, backup. I use a third-party, cloud-based back-up system. It can automatically make backups every hour if that's what I want and I can supplement that anytime by simply dropping a file into the application's desktop interface.
Since I last posted my Mac has been running smoothly and I've been able to install Parallels and Windows 7, as well as the VantagePoint software I mentioned. Though it crashed once this morning and I submit one line from the log file:
12/20/12 10:31:00.639 AM appleeventsd[54]: BUG in libdispatch: 12C60 - 1510 - 0x4
After a reboot, log entries spewed all manner of troubling messages, from those that are osascript-related to broken forks, etc. but as far as I know there were no actual crash logs generated until this afternoon, one being just a few minutes ago. Linc, would you be so kind to take a look and tell me if there's something I need to do?

Clean Installing MacOS 10.6 - restoring Mail, iCal & Address Book
My parents own a first-generation white MacBook.
A couple of years ago, the MacBook's internal hard disk had to be replaced under extra-extented warranty. (MacBooks of that era had hard drive problems, and Apple took care of its customers.)
As a result, I had to clean-install MacOS 10.6 off of its DVD. I remember it being a pain because I do backup with La Cie's Silverkeeper backup utility, not Apple's Time Machine. (I don't have any empty external hard disks around, so I didn't bother to use Time Machine). I used Silverkeeper to copy my parents' entire user folder over to a hard drive. Because I am cautious about restores, I carefully copied only specific data back to the MacBook once the "new" hard drive was installed. I did not just restore the entire user folder with all of its settings.
Fast forward a couple of years...
My parents were complaining of unusual fluctuations of internet speeds on their machine. (They use WiFi, with an Airport base station connected to a DSL modem.) My MacBook Pro had no problem on their Airport connection. Theirs is really screwy. I have been advised to clean install MacOS X again.
As I recall, this was a bit of a pain the last time. I don't know what has happened, but I assume that something has gone wrong with their settings or with the system software. I want to be careful in doing a clean-install this time so that most settings are not copied over, and only some things do get copied:
iTunes
iCal
Mail
Address Book
Safari bookmarks only (I want to be careful about this one)
How do I do these things without copying over all the other settings/libraries/junk?
Also: my parents use Facebook frequently. Is there anything in Facebook that can infect their MacBook? If so, what can I do to avoid re-creating that after a clean install?
I have their user folder backed up on two separate external hard drives just to be safe. Each of those drives contains other information, but I made sure to place the copied user folder inside another folder at the root level of the disk, clearly labeled, so there won't be any problems.

Flip4MacDoes anyone know the easiest way to transfer my account (mail, calendars, etc) from my old account to a fresh one whilst offering a possible elimination of the crashing issue I am experiencing?
see this link
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507
copy (not move) the relevant data from the old account to some location that both accounts have access to like the folder /Users/Shared. then log into the new account and copy the stuff back to the new account. -
System crashes, even after clean install. How to diagnose?
Hi all,
Have been experiencing weird errors with my 2010 MBP, among which infrequent system crashes. I've seen my MBP swallow keypresses of the external Logitech keyboard I use. Replacing it with another (similar) model didn't help. It was getting quite annoying and I was beginning to distrust my Mac. I work on that, so it's crucial I have it running well.
After doing a complete clean install yesterday, the system crashed after 10 minutes of use. I'm suspecting a drive problem. I replaced the internal drive by a Crucial 256GB SSD a year and a half ago. I've already asked Disk Utility to do a check of the disk, but it reports no problems.
My system is now completely clean, but it's still not stable. How can I diagnose my MBP's issue?
Look forward to hearing from you,
MartinOk, adding some info as requested in other posts. Hope anyone can make something useful from this. The crash after 10 minutes of running was a kernel panic. It says page_fault now that I look at it in some detail. Is that a memory thing?
