System console dual head

I have a machine running dual head off of a nVidia geforce 7900gs, this if fine in X, but when i am in regular system console, it simply mirrors the same terminal on both monitors. Is it possible to run a different VT on each monitor? Is there any other way to make dual head from command line more useful?
Any Ideas, anyone?

I have also been looking for info concerning this. In my small amount of research I found the fbset utility, it seems to support moving different ttys to different frame buffers. The problem is my /dev only contains one fb device (fb0). It seems my Nvidia 6600 (having two heads, a monitor connected to each) is being detected as a single frame buffer. I have not had enough time to dig any further into this issue.

Frozen system when booting with dual-head setup (updates)

I made a fresh install a couple of weeks ago and I configured my system for a dual-head setup following the wiki. I activated KMS and added radeon to the kernel parameters.
My xorg.conf looks like this:

I was having random freezes for a couple of days, but I didn't pay too much attention to it. I hard rebooted my computer when it froze and it could boot normally that second time.
But after yesterday, last update to the open source drivers xf86-video-ati (1:7.5.0-2) and lib32-mesa-libgl (10.5.2-1), my system doesn't boot unless I disconnect one of the screens. When only one screen it's connected everything is fine. If I plug the second screen, it pops up the KDE service to configurate the second screen but as soon I press 'apply the chages' my system freezes and I had to hard reboot.
I've tried all possible combinations usingt different outputs from the screens, getting the same results. Two of them connected --> freezes after grub loading. One connected --> boot Ok, but as soon as I plug the second one and I apply changes, freezes.
I found one configuration that doesn't freeze my system. When I plug the second screen, as I said, KDE service automatically pops up. Before I was changing the positions of the screen, one beside the other one, and my system freezes when I apply the changes. If I just left the default configuration (one screen in top of the other), it doesn't freeze my system. After that, I can rearrange the screens, as I need them, and it doesn't freeze.

[S] Latest Xorg crashes on dual head system when web browser is opened

Due to the long Subject line I abbreviated, the issue is solved but I would still like it if someone could answer my question if someone knows why
After updating Xorg and the Radeon drivers on my dual head system opening any kind of web browser causes Xorg to crash. Any other application: Dolphin, Kopete, Amarok, urxvt open and run just fine with no issues from Xorg (which is baffling me). I have a bunch of single head systems that use ATI video cards that don't have this issue, like the one I am currently on that has Chrome open with four tabs.
I caused a couple of these crashes and grabbed /var/log/Xorg.0.log, can be viewed from here http://sprunge.us/bNZC, as well as grabbed my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf file, which is here http://sprunge.us/gbNW. SLiMs log file has a little bit more in it as far as errors go, http://sprunge.us/UjVK, mostly how it is trying to load VDPAU which if I remember correctly that is a Nvidia thing is it not? There are also errors how it can't load the RANDR extension. Anyone have any helpful pointers of solving this?

It seams that my 10-monitor.conf file was causing the issue, why I am not sure... and it would be nice to know what the problem with it was, but after moving that file out of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory and restarting X11 and using xrandr to get my screens setup the way I like them to be X11 no longer crashes when a web browser is opened. I wonder if this will also solve my issue of Awesome randomly crashing after long periods of inactivity...

OpenOffice crash with dual-head presentation in Impress

Hi, I have an issue with Impress, I hoped that version 3.2 would fix it but it's not so. Now I think it is a problem of my system.
I have a dual head setup with an ATI card (Catalyst 10.5, xorg-server 1.7.6); I start a slide show with Impress on the secondary display, then when I press esc to return to Impress the program crashes. Starting it from the console I get this error messages:

Hey, I just discovered the same problem here... I believe it's exclusive with oo, and go-oo doesn't have it.
EDIT:
According to this, it has to do with gtk, a possibly workaround (at least for me) is running this first:
export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP="soffice"
Then openoffice doesn't crash when you close the presentation :). Hope it helps until we find a real solution :).

Install of 10.1.4.0.1 OAM Identity System Console link goes to blank page

I am installing OAM in order to test a .Net Application Integration (IPM 10g). I have been working from the install doc for 10.1.4.0.1 and have got to the point of installing WebPass (Chapter 5 of the install doc). I have installed that component and the "http://ohstest:7777/identity/olbix" page comes up. I am running against an OID install on the same VM running windows 2003 R2.
I headed into chapter 6 and "Setting Up the Identity System". Unfortunatly, when I click the "Identity System Console" link, after a long delay a blank page comes up and the URL is:
http://ohstest:7777/identity/oblix/apps/admin/bin/front_page_admin.cgi
It does this for the User Manager link as well. A blank page at:
http://ohstest:7777/identity/oblix/apps/userservcenter/bin/userservcenter.cgi
I am not sure where to look to identify the problem. Anyone have any suggestions?

I looked in windows event viewer and found that there was more than just the information that was displayed in the dialog. The event viewer says "Oracle Access Manager Identity Server (OracleIdentityServer_0789) is not a valid Win32 application". This indicates to me that it probably was not even able to load the service provider server.
The path to the service exe is --> "C:\Program Files\NetPoint_01\identity\oblix\apps\common\bin\ois_server.exe"

Xorg.conf , nvidia 96xx and dual head failure

i cant get Xorg to work with nvidia driver at all.

Ive tried everything i could think of or what arch wiki could. I came to aurch linux to learn more about linux (fedora holds your hand to much.) but i dont think i can figure this one out on my own.

let me see if I understand your situation.
You are using the nvidia drivers and want to setup a dual screen with independent screens (?).
Without a xorg.conf one screen should work out of the box with one screen.
For the proprietary drivers you will need a minimal xorg.conf:

Xrandr not listing dual head outputs

I'm running into a little annoying problem with xrandr. It doesn't want to list my nvidia 8800gt's dual heads as different outputs.

So it only lists "default" even though I have a second monitor plugged in over DVI (a TV actually). I know it's not a problem with output to the TV because if I specifically set up output in xorg.conf it works fine. However I would much prefer to enable and disable output to TV on an as-needed basis.

I can duplicate LVDS onto VGA-0 but again video will not play on VGA-0.

Setting up independant dual-head configuration in the usual way?

I'm preparing to set up a dual monitor system pretty soon using an ATI Radeon card. I went through the wiki and read what the ATI page has to say:
Independent dual-headed setups can be configured the usual way
The problem is that it gives no indication of what the usual way is. I vaguely have an idea that I might need xinerama, but couldn't find a wiki page on that either... I've also tried googling with limited results.
Is anyone able to let me know of a good resource for this?

I'm using a radeon 6870 with kde and in my case I was able to set up my dual screens using Settings > System Settings > Hardware > Display and Monitor > Size & Orientation, clicking Save as Default once I had things set up the way I wanted made the settings permanent

Solaris 10 x86 w/ Matrox G450 dual head and xinerama

I have solaris 10 x86 with matrox g450 dual head and x.org x-server. The problem is to get xinerama work. When xinerama isn't enabled, two different desktops work well - or, they work, but they are pretty useless because I can't move windows between them. So, I have to enable xinerama, but it seems, that neither JDS/Gnome nor CDE haven't been built including support for xinerama.
When I enable xinerama, X.org-x-server starts fine and there's dtlogin. When I login and it passes execution to gnome, it fails and x-server restarts. Same with CDE. But if I put 'exec /opt/sfw/bin/xterm to my .dtprofile', it starts ok and I can do some testing..

If I start /opt/sfw/bin/fvwm2, it works fine too, so the problem seems to be gtk/glib/gnome and CDE. One odd thing is that, normal CDE-programs, like dtterm, dtcm, dtcalc etc. works fine. But dtwm doesn't work in xinerama mode.
So, would anyone have any suggestion what could I do? Do I have to recompile my own GNOME, or could Sun do something to the next Solaris 10 update? (As far as I understood, current Solaris 10 release doesn't include zfs yet, so there will be update soon, I think)

Can anybody tell me how to get it work ?

Bootsplash on a dual-head setup without KMS?

Hello!
I have been wanting to get a bootsplash working on my system, to get a feeling of a more polished system, but sadly I'm running the catalyst drivers for decent 3D game framerate, and it doesn't support KMS. It seemed like that would have been okay, and that for example plymouth could work through a framebuffer, but sadly I have dual-head with two different resolutions(1920x1200 and 1020x1280), and I couldn't get Uvesafb/v86d to work with that. I really want to get a bootsplash and I am willing to sacrafise some time to get it working. The main goal is just to get it working, but ideally I'd like it without any resolution changing or black flicker, as it's described here. So Plymouth is my first-pick, as it looks "best".
So far I have tried Splashy, FBsplash and Plymouth, with different degrees of success:
FBsplash:
Miscsplashutils(dependency) didn't build because freetype had been built without static linking(I don't know anything about this). I got it working with something I found in the comments though.
But then FBsplash wouldn't build. And I gave it up.
Splashy:
Installation worked(splashy-full) after I modified the PKGBUILD with some automake patches so it should work with automake 1.14. But when I booted it the screen was just flickering black
Plymouth:
I got it installing, can't remeber if I needed some patches. And it worked, although only with a text-bootsplash. I also installed a framebuffer(Uvesafb/v86d) but that didn't work properly.
The Plymouth loading anymation(spinfinity) continued into gdm.
I am willing to retry everything and clearify what doesn't work, and why.

So I've been trying to get some development on this, and used most of the day to get uvesafb working.
It is working quite good, but I don't get the native resolution of the screen(1920x1200), I only get 1600x1200.
And my secound monitor is disabled, I suspect it's because the computer sends a resolution to big to both the screens, but it's really a a feature for me, as the terminal would be sideways on the secound monitor anyways.
During my testing I also came to a new idea: Have the framebuffer, X and GDM originally only start the main monitor, and then leave it up to gnome to enable it. that way I would only get the flicker between GDM and gnome-shell, which I will get anyway, because it seems like everything ignores X's rotation of the screens, or at least doesnt support sideways. However I didn't find a way to get this working, any ideas?
EDIT; My card is an HD6790, and as far as I can understand the GPU's bios is sending supported modes to uvesafb?

Dual Head - Window managers / Desktop enviroments Issues

Hi.
Grasping how Xorg, KDM/GDM, and the many DE:s / WM:s handle Dual head and the likes is not a walk in the park. This is really not really helpful towards newbies, setting up tv-out and such...
Xinerama - cons:
No DRI / openGL
Not all apps are xinerama aware, and not many have option to be started up on xinerama screen.
Xinerama - pros:
Drag apps between screens
Xinerama - usability:
KDE: good
Gnome: poor (apps end up on second screen, second monitor is not very configurable)
Xfce: good
TvinView - cons:
Missing features (A good example is crt is primary monitor, ALWAYS. Not fun when using laptops in tvinview configs)
TvinView - pros:
Accelerated output.
Good configurability in xorg.conf (makes your brain hurt though)
TvinView - usability:
Cant say, not been experimenting much. should be the same as dual screens.
Dual Screens - cons:
Cant move apps between screens.
You get a barebone "extra" desktop on second screen, for "free", yay!
Dual Screen - pros:
Accelerated output
Start apps with enviroment variable "DISPLAY=0.1" to second screen
Duals Screen - usability:
KDE: good
Gnome: poor (Apps end up on wrong screen all to often, Autostarted apps in the notification area / system tray crashes)
Xfce: good
Needless to say i think all setups pretty much suck, but what to do, what to do...
Either way i run dual screens because i want glx accelerated graphics.
As i use xfce and kde, i have no problems with this setup, but what about all gnome people?
Also, i've been browsing the net for DAYS (really) trying to figure out how to stop xfce, gnome and kde from loading that second desktop. There is NO info whatsoever on how to do this.
I want plain X, on my second screen/head. I have heard of people having this, but because of gnome/whatever not supporting dual-head, back in the days. Also one guy i spoke with accidently got this behaviour with KDE 3.5.2 when changing from gdm to kdm.
I also WANT this bug (which for me would be a feature!).
This way i could fire up another WM on that head, or why not freevo as a dedicated media player together with my remote control?

@pelle: I have the same problem with gnome... in my xinitrc I first start ratpoison on the second screend but if I start gnome afterwards it takes both screens anyway. It currently only works with two 'simple' WMs. Though, I like Fluxbox as a replacement for gnome/kde very much. If it only had support for beryl, it would definately be my WM of choice.
@tmadhavan: You can indeed only have one exec line but you can execute any amount of commands before that line adding a '&' at the end of the line. The exec just defines the command that is linked to the XServer which means, if the 'exec' command exits, then the Xserver exits as well. But it doesn't have the WM you use with 'exec'. I once used a script I had written there, that allowed me to change the WM on the fly without shutting down neither X itself, nor any application I had running.

We need hardware info, also what drivers you're running, what desktop environment (if any), and if you're wanting compositing or not.
Differences in hardware cause massive differences in how you configure Xorg.

It doesn't look as if xrandr can help as it reports a maximum virtual desktop of 1680x1680.
Because the two monitors are different resolutions I don't know if a single screen is the answer.
I used to have two displays/screens configured to two different resolutions matching the monitors using the catalyst driver but can't get it working using the xf86-video-ati driver.
Any help would be appreciated.

Install of 10.1.4.0.1 OAM Identity System Console link blank AGAIN

I am now having a similar problem to the one that started the following thread:

When I click "Identity System Console" I get a blank page.
This is a different problem than that thread because I have verified the Identity Server is up and running (which solved my problem last time). I have also checked the log file at NetPoint\WebComponent\identity\oblix\logs\oblog.log and found the following error being reported over and over:

What changed from my previous successfull install is I rolled back to a snapshot of the Windows 2003 Server VM where it is in a workgroup rather than the domain and reinstalled the Oracle Identity Server and WebPass over the OID that had been installed previously.
You may ask why I did this...Because OID was installed outside the domain and I could not use OID DAS because the configuration of OID must have assumed at install that it would be in that workgroup and I could not successfully log into OID DAS.

I did the telnet to "OHSTest 6022" and it responds with "SMPL" which I assume stands for Simple which is what I configured. Looking at the webpass.xml file - it does have 6022 as the port (See Below). I do notice that there is no primary server defined but there is a secondary server. Could that be the problem (See the portion of the config file below)?

The last one is for a cursor problem I have, but it wont get fixed, neither, anyway the default xcursor looks good in awesome, I switched to cli apps form many tasks, and use uzbl now! all this plus arch is now so minimmal I love it lol!
I red in a post (not in this one) mach64 chips supported dual head, but I can't find it again, I will post it when I find it.

Sorry to necrobump but I was seeing you get a lot of incorrect information on LinuxQuestions.
The mach64 driver does NOT support dualhead. Some chips are capable of it but this feature has yet to be added to the driver. It is also not compatible with xrandr. The man page you linked to mentioning dualhead support is for xf86-video-ati. It is only accessible from the git history of xf86-video-mach64 because those drivers used to live in the same source tree.
I can try to help with DRI if that's still not working for you.
