System CPU usage too high

Hi, i've been trying to troubleshoot this problem for some months.. everytime i try to use perfmon or another program to watch for network usage (download and upload) the System process spikes to 13%~ constantly until i close it.. I could "live"
without that but now everytime i'm using an application on my second monitor, the same thing happens... started happening just an hour ago, and it's really bothering me because i don't have a clue what driver could possibly cause this.
I've tried capturing xperf traces on another forum but they keep come as corrupted as the person whose trying to troubleshoot with me tells me, and i can't seem to get a grip of the xperf analyser myself to see what (driver?) is using the cpu so i can try
to replace it...
Anyway, as i type this it jumped up to 20% and i don't know what to do.
I'll upload two xperf traces here, but at least one is "corrupted" as the other kind member on the other forums told me. (which is the first one below)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36066558/highCPUUsage.7z
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36066558/highCPUUsage2.7z
And the one i just recorded, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/36066558/highCPUUsage3.7z
Does someone have another way or can help me find what's causing it?
I used the command xperf -on latency -stackwalk profile -buffersize 1024 -MaxFile 512 -FileMode Circular && timeout -1 && xperf -d highCPUUsage.etl
I took a print of the System process Threads in Process Explorer http://i.imgur.com/vbW36rU.png
Before the today's change, the function shown there was mostly ntoskml.exe!KeGetCurrentProcessorNumberEx+0x34, i don't know if that means anything...
Thanks.

First Xperf has been replaced by Windows performance recorder.  Second there was almost no data recorded in your trace.  Please run a windows performance trace as instructed in the wiki and upload it.  Make sure you run the trace when the
problem is happening
In order to diagnose your problem we need to run Windows performance toolkit the instructions for which can be found in
this wiki
If you have any questions feel free to ask
Please run the trace when you are experiencing the problem

  • Satellite A45 - CPU usage is high and applications slow

    Hi all,
I'm trying to debug a hardware problem on my Toshiba Satellite A45. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, but I don't believe this is OS or software related.
THE PROBLEM: CPU usage is high and applications slow to a crawl after using a memory intensive application for a few minutes, i.e. viewing a video or playing a game. Basically, anything that might use the screen a lot. If instead I work only from a command prompt, even when the application might be doing a lot of work, I don't encounter this problem. After shutting down all application, CPU usage is still higher than normal (90% idle, should normally be about 99% idle).
Xorg typically now showing about 6% usage (normally < 2%). If I at any time after this try to work in any application, usage is still bogged down. Only a reset gets me back to normal.
Note: My system had always worked fine, and I had not done any software installation or changes when this started happening.
However, the laptop did go through an 800 mile round trip in the back of the car in a padded laptop bag.
DEBUG: This doesn't seem to be RAM as I have replaced RAM and reseated the RAM, and the problem still occurs. This doesn't seem to be the Hard Drive as I can try to run from a Live CD (no HDD usage) and everything still slows to a crawl.
HELP: I'm not sure how to debug from here.
I don't have extra bits of hardware to do swaps.
Any ideas how to further debug this?
    Thanks,
    Grommit

    Hi grommit
What do You think about the possibility that your PC is becoming overheated?
To me this sounds like such a scenario.
Your using an application which is intensive - which makes the unit warm up a lot probably.
After that everything is sluggish. This is what may happen when cooling is not sufficient - the CPU is throttled to reduce heat generation. And the effect is that the unit works pretty slow.
May I suggest that You try to let the unit be off for some time before trying it again - I don't know your possibilities, but I would put it on the balcony or on the floor below an open window too cool it really much.
Then try again from whatever media you like.
The result? Good performance for a while again? Then either clean the cooling module yourself or have a repair workshop do this for You.
Good luck and stay with Linux! :)

  • High system CPU usage only recoverable by rebooting

    Hi,
I'm having this problem since I started using my new iMac 27'. Before that I was using the same version of OSX (10.6.1) in the MacbookPro without this issue.
So it's being hard to reproduce the problem, but suddenly there is a spike in CPU usage from System Processes (on average 40-50% if "% System" in the Activity Monitor), but strangely when I choose to show only system processes, there's no process that is actually using that amount of CPU. And the system gets REALLY slow.
While trying to reproduce the problem, I rebooted and started iTunes. And it happened. Even after closing iTunes the high "ghost" CPU usage gets really high and never recovers unless I reboot.
Is anyone else having similar issues?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Don't limit it to System Processes. There's often too much interaction between user and system processes. Choose either +All Processes+ or +Active Processes.+
You probably want to select +View > Update Frequency > Less Often+ from the menubar, too, both so you can read the screen and so Activity Monitor itself won't take up too much CPU. Then sort the list by the +% CPU+ column so the largest numbers are on top.
Watch it for a while. Many processes will "spike" up and down normally, as they do something, then go idle.
And the system gets REALLY slow.
That's when you need to see what the top one or two processes are.
If you see +Process Names+ you don't recognize, post them here or consult http://triviaware.com/macprocess/all

  • Some process cpu usage too much!!

I have many problem when update Mountain Lion.
some process are too much usage cpu .
    iMac Processor : 3.4GHz Intel Core i7
    Ram : 16GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Problem Process:
    -  safari web content.
    -  image capture extension.
    -  mdworker
There are usage too much cpu , so iMac too slow!!!
    Please solve it .

I have the same problem here, my MacBook Air barely goes to 60ºC while doing normal tasks, but as I edit video in iMovie (or even just letting iMovie open without doing anything) is gets near 100ºC because my CPU load is always very high!
    Can someone explain this?

  • Why is Flash CPU usage so high on my PC?

To other psoters here - Please do not hijack my thread for any other performance issues with Flash other than high CPU usage.
This thread is (hopefully) dedicated to why the CPU usage on my desktop PC jumps when I go to a page with flash 'content'. Thank you!
I am hoping that there is an answer for why my computer is using a very high amount of CPU percentage when I am viewing flash content?
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 on a Gateway GT5432 desktop computer.
I have Shockwave Flash version 11.7.700.169 installed.
I am using Firefox version 20.0.1 (but I have seen same problem of high CPU with Google chrome).
Here is one page that is causing the high CPU usage.
    -   http://logansroadhouse.com/Default.aspx
That page appears to have lots of Flash content.
If I open that logans roadhouse page, my CPU usage goes from an average of 12%, to 80%!
The process I see jump are:
    - Firefox's "plugin-container.exe" goes from 0% to about 50%
    - Firefox browser "firefox.exe" goes from around 8% to 14%
    - Adobe's plugin "FlashPlayerPlugin_11_7_700_169.exe" goes from 0% to 16%
    - TOTAL CPU change from 8% to 80% after opening up just this one page !
When I close the page, the CPU usage goes down again. Open again - CPU goes high again.
Also if I go to the firefox addons page and DISABLE the SHOCKWAVE FLASH plugin, then go to that Logans Roadhouse page, very little of the content I saw with Flash enabled is visible - which I take to mean it is a page consisting of lots of Flash 'content'. Also the CPU usage remains low (8%) if I go to that page - after disabling the Shockwave Flash plugin.
I have seen the CPU also go high on youtube.com pages also - CPU jumps just as I said above - if Flash is enabled. CPU then drops after disabling Flash plugin.
I was hoping you had a fix for my problem? My PC becomes almost unusable with the CPU so high. It sure looks like it is the Flash plugin driving the CPU so high.

I am also facing the same problem from last 2-3 weeks since i upgraded my flash player to latest one.
All softwares and drivers are upto-date.
I play wartune MMO flash browser based game (also applicable to youtube videos)  which is now using above 80% of CPU. Before upgrading, CPU usage was normal around 5-15% depending upon the events, but not more than 20% even if i open 3-4 accounts of wartune in different windows at the same time. It happens in all browsers (IE10, Mozila22.00, Opera12.15, Chrome27.0.1453.116 m).
I tried all solutions like disabling  hardware acceleration, flash cache size to unlimited, clearing all flash cache etc but the same problem.
Please fix this problem as soon as possible.

  • Is 95C CPU temperature too high?

I have Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. When I use QuickTime or any other video converting software to convert video for my iPhone CPU temperature hits 95C mark. Is it too high? Should I do something about it. If yes what should I do? It is the only situation when CPU temp is so high usually it is not higher then 70C when loaded.

    Hi,
thats normal that the CPU of an mobile system gets hotter, I mean your much more near the CPU then by an desktop. Thats normal that you could think the CPU gets too hot.
I have an Satellite X200 (Gamer machine) and the thing gets really hot, but thats normal since a powerful CPU is in there.
If I were you I wouldnt make any doubt about it and if youre unsure just ask some of your friends which owns a notebook. Usually they would say "yes, mine gets hot, too.."
The 100 degree means that the CPU can become such hot till it reaches 100 degree and then the machine shuts down to prevent to some damage on the CPU.
So in this case the 70 degree are okay. You (can by the way) prevent overheating when you clean your machine regurarely simply by blasting some compressed air gently through the ventilation holes of the CPU cooling system. If not then the cooling modules will be clogged from dust and start to overheat...

  • Curious - CPU usage sometimes high!

Sometimes (but not often) I'll notice my Q10 (with OS 10.2.1.3247) is warm and using battery faster than usual.
A check of the CPU usage shows the System as the user of the CPU with usage rate vascillating around 50%.
A reboot thus far has always remedied the anomaly.

Or did you do an os update recently?

  • CPU usage suspiciously high while idle

I have the following problem, help is very appreciated
Right after my computer finishes booting the CPU usage raises up to approx. 55% on both cores, I'll attach a screenshot to clarify.
What can be the cause of this?
To me, Xorg seems to be using more CPU than it needs.. still it's not 55%. The performance isn't bad either, the system works very well.

well well... looks like compiz WAS the problem after all... must've messed up while testing. So i 'found' a 'decent' workaround.
Deactivated compiz (set metacity as the WM) and removed compiz-icon from the startup applications, then i enabled metacity compositing (because i use both screenlets and docky)... and that's it, .. for now

  • CPU Usage is high - WebLogic Server 8.1 SP5

    Hi,
We upgraded the WebLogic Server 6.1 to WebLogic Server 8.1 SP5 for one of our application.
The load test with WLS6.1 results,
CPU Usage was peak up to 18% with sessions 10 -15 simultaneously.
The load test with WLS8.1 results,
CPU Usage was peak up to 60% for 12 users simultaneously.
Why this higher CPU Usage in WebLogic 8.1 SP5 than WebLogic 6.1 for the similar environment (hardware)?
Please give us the solution or the suggestions asap.

If MQ V5 clients cannot interoperate with MQ V7 servers, then perhaps MQ V6 clients support the 1.4 JVM? If so, I suppose you can use an MQ V6 client to communicate with V7.
Alternatively, perhaps MQ's "extended transactional client" provides more flexibility in interoperability than the client you're using.

  • CPU usage very high, performance low

Using activity monitor, I gauge my cpu usage to be between 50 and 60 percent, with the Activity Monitor being THE ONLY APPLICATION OPEN! There are only two events which I can remotely correlate to this problem: downloading and using a new version of Firefox (3.07) and downloading and using Amadeus so I could listen to a Wiki file.
When I open Firefox or any other application, CPU usage goes straight to 100%. Then the machine slows down significantly. Any ideas?

You guys are not going to believe this! I did some searching where I discovered this comment by a user on MacRumors (sp?) named "cyantist:"
"For some reason I remember having this issue a while back, and the solution was this: right-click on the desktop > show view options > deselect show item info. It worked for me, but it wasn't Finder that was giving me 100% cpu, it was Safari or Camino."
Well, I couldn't really figure out what he had done but I right-clicked on the desktop>More>Configure Folder Actions> disable Folder Actions. Voila! Finder and mds dropped off the Activity Monitor list with percentages less than 1. Yikes! I did some experimentation and it turns out that all one has to do IS RIGHT-CLICK ON THE DESKTOP! At first, I thought it was toggling every time I selected and deselected "Enable Folder Actions," but doggone if the Finder and mds didn't drop off the map by simply right-clicking on the desktop. Bizarre! Now, with Activity Monitor and Firefox open, the cpu is running between 10% and 20%. Go figure! I'm not going to mark this problem as solved until someone chimes in with a reasonable explanation (which might come from . . . The Twilight Zone . . . )

  • System memory usage seems high

hello. i have a 3 month old macbook pro 13 and when i just looked on activity monitor with no programs running but airport on it said i was using 2.28 gigs of system memory and 1.72 gigs was free. does that seem normal? the only program on here that didn't come stock is iwork. and as i said, nothing was running at the time. thanks.

When you look in the Activity Monitor, what is listed for inactive memory? As the linked article indicates, inactive memory is memory that was in use by another application that was closed and can either be reused by the application if you reopen it or can be used by any other application. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1342?viewlocale=en_us
So if your inactive memory is high, then you shouldn't spend too much time worrying about the amount that is "free" because the inactive memory is essentially free.

  • Drawing rulers - CPU utilization too high

    Hi,
in my application I would like to show a horizontal and a vertical ruler. I have done this (see code below) but CPU utilization raises to ~50% on a P4 2.6GHz. Is there a way to avoid this?

}The example is a working one, you can try it out. It consumes too much CPU time. I just want to draw 2 rulers... therefore I followed the example given at the Sun Java tutorial at http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/scrollpane.html -> "How a Scroll Pane Works". Unfortunately I can't use a JScrollPane.
    Thanks a lot!

Aside from the change event issue, you should not set properties of the component (ie the border) within the paint cycle. Think about it - a property needs only be set once, not every time the component is painted. In the paint cycle, you use the component's properties to render to the Graphics.
Also, if you extend JPanel, you will get the background rendering for free. (Use what Swing can give you for free: it's well-optimised, you're unlikely to improve on it except in very unusual cases.)
No point creating a font (again, added cost in the paint cycle) - use getFont() to get the component's font, and set it elsewhere (eg in the constructor) if the default isn't what you want. Note also that by hardcoding your font, you're effectively killing the functionality of setFont().

  • *virtualbox gnome3* Cpu is too high 99% when using gnome3 full mode

1G ram, 128 video ram. when click the 3d item, cpu rise to 99%..cannot use full mode.system hanged

Am i reading right you are using Arch with Gnome3 in virtualbox if so you are using much to much video memory 60mb is about right for vbox. 3d is experimental and more than likely will not work with gnome3.

  • CPU temperature too high

i have P4 2.8Ghz 0.09 Micron on an 875 NEO - FIS2R Board , and my CPU is runing on 61 on low up to 82-85 on "burn" when it shut's down the temp in the case is 32 on low - 35 on "BURN" , the case is CodeGen 9011 with 3 fans + additional 2 fans / 1*8cm + 1*12cm/ + fan under the HDD , the cpu is BOX version , it is in the original intel package with the heatsink and fan ... what can caouse such high temp. Please help

    Hi Maxi
Ok first of all there is no northbridge temp sensor. So ignore that reading it is just a floating voltage that is taken as a temperature. Your NB will be fine as many and I mean many ppl have posted saying there NB temp is in that region and none have died.
Secondly I agree with Ruckus buy a new heatsink I suggest the Zalman CNPS7000-A Al/CU (Aluminium and copper version as lower weight.)
But if your CPU is a Prescott which I think it might be then go with the all copper version.
But before you upgrade your heatsink maybe just reseat your current intel cooler because i might be on wrong. Secondly maybe upgrade the bios to a newer version to rule out a bios issue with the temp.
Those are my suggestions. Wait for other ppls suggestions before you take action.
    Hope this helps

  • KT4V CPU load too high when IDE active underXP Pro

    Hey there,
    Plz help with this:
Win XP Pro on KT4V run fine except for the high CPU load when performing ide tasks (load, copy etc...).
Tried Win98SE, HDTach reports 5% only. Under XP 55%.
All drivers up-to-date, wiring OK, latest BIOS burned, HDD in UDMA 5 mode.
Any ideas? BAS, did you not experience similar prob?
    Thanks.
    Cheers,

The problem is not your code, but the stock JMF DirectSound audio renderer.
The audio renderer has its DirectAudio buffer hard-coded to hold 2 seconds of sound. Therefore, if you have any lag for any reason from the audio card driver when sound is starting up, you will have an audio delay of up to two seconds.
My company had to make heavy modifications to the original JMF audio renderer. We set up a 300 millisecond buffer and also introduced code to handle buffer starvation, etc., etc. I would suggest you get the JMF source code and check this out for yourself.
    Good luck.
