System crash corrupt HD's. I have
My PC crashed big time.. All HD's corrupt. I have no way of retrieving my purchased songs.. I have been successful in retrieving the Licenses only but no songs.. I only have 310 songs. Is there anyway I can redownload? Please?
Sorry, but officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased tracks. It's your responsibility to make backup copies in case something goes wrong with your system, as unfortunately it apparently did in your case, and you lose all the information on your hard drive. If the tracks are really gone from your hard drive and you haven't made a backup (or have the tracks on an iPod), you're probably out of luck and will need to repurchase your tracks.
You can try contacting iTunes Music Store Customer Service and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis, but don't count on it.

LR2 Experienced System Crash & Corrupted Catalog - Need Help!!!
We are using: Mac OS X Version 10.5.8
Background on Lightroom Use:
The size of the catalog in question is 296 MB.
Pictures on an 8GB smart card were being uploaded into lightroom and simultaneously moved into a folder on an external hard drive at the time of the crash. (During this download, the imac screen gave us a very scary...."Death Veil" that started at the top and slowly covered in a downward motion the entire screen, freezing up the computer completely.)
The error message said we needed to restart the computer using the restart option or shut the computer down using the on/off switch.
Since the computer was "frozen" we were unable to access the restart option so we hit the off switch, holding it down until the imac shut itself down.
After waiting for approximately a minute, we restarted the imac.
The imac started as it usually does, however, when we opened Lightroom2, the following message appeared:
After Selecting the "Repair Catalog" Option the following message appeared:
Other catalogs are operating properly in LIghtroom.
We have no available backup and are looking for someone who can assist with
perhaps fixing the corrupted catalog. (Literally, thousands of hours)
Mahalo Nui LoIf you ever ran "Save" on a lot of images, you'll have all your edits and metadata for those images, and if you ran save recently on the whole catalog of images, you'll be pretty well off. In such a case, I'd start a brand new catalog, and Import in place all the images.
However, assuming the worst, that the above avenue won't yield much, one particular Adobe employee, Dan Tull, is a whiz at repairing catalogs, and you may get it done by sending the catalog to him. From a post long ago: Dan Tull can be contacted at dtull-at-adobe.com .. .. note that @ has been substitued with -at- in above email address .. I haven't seen Dan in this forum for a while, so it's not a for sure thing.
With best wishes, -

I am hoping someone can help me. I have recently moved to Korea and my macbook crashed on me. It displays the flashing folder with the question mark. The problem is I did not pack with me the cds that came with my macbook so I can reinstall and get my mac back up and running. Does anyone know how I can get the cds to reinstall and save my mac? HELP HELP!
Tough without a Tiger Disk, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup. Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(space between fsck and -fy important)
3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found: ** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message: *** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *** Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
PS. We have more if that fails. -
Vista system crashed due to a corrupted system file. The C drive was reformatted, and windows reloaded, along with the rest of my programs.
Before the drive was reformatted, an image was made of it on a USB drive to save all the data. Now I need to know how to get the Bookmarks back for Firefox, and the Address Book back for Thunderbird.
ThanksThanks for the quick response. It worked very well, for both Firefox and Tbird.
One hitch, until I remembered: those are all hidden files, in hidden folders. I had a devil of a time finding the "roaming" folder, until I found out how to unhide everything. In years past, I used DOS for that kind of thing. Explorer is much less user-friendly. Now that I know how to do it, it's simple.
Thanks again for the guidance -
Hi:

I have an iMac 23", 3.06 Intel Core 2 duo. Whenever I try to play YouTube videos, the system crashes and I get a "Safari quit unexpectedly" message.
I know there are Apple vs YouTube issues, but the same thing happens when I try to play video ads from the Apple site.
The computer is 4 yrs old- this problem started a couple of months ago. No major changes, just updated as available.
Any suggestions....?I don't have any Safari extensions that I know of. I didn't install any anti-virus.
This is on the error message when it comes up. I went to the WebProcess application in Time Machine and tried to restore it to one year ago, but it didn't fix the problem. As I recall, this began about the time Apple and YouTube parted ways- whether that is coincidence or not...
/System/Library/StagedFrameworks/Safari/Webkit2.framework/WebProcess.app/Content s/MacOS/WebProcess
Thanks for taking the time to look at this. I really appreciate the effort. I'm a amatuer at this, I'm afraid. -
I have a problem with Apple store when installing large application (example xCode): The system crashes.
It begun with 10.8 usualy with few tries it work but with 4.6 no succes.
Any suggestion? If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports. -
Have new ipad2 1st time setup sync etc went without a hitch. Now whole system crashes
Now every time I connect the ipad to the computer the system crashes. I get a long message starting with windows shutting down to prevent damage to computer. Have followed procedures like system restore to the date before 1st sync, opend in safe mode, checked bios for updates etc but none of these actions have stopped the system crashing. What can I do now?
I'd make appointment with Apple genius and detail everything that you have done, the error message you are getting and the crash. It might be more than you'll find a solution for here.

I desperately need your help. I was working on iMovie last night when the thing froze up on me. I've tried rebooting. I've tried reinstalling the apps. No change. I can play some of the files- although I can't tell which ones will play until they magically appear. I can't get into the project library or the event library. The bar that lets me scroll through the clips is gone. Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a couple of minutes and generates a "problem report" that says "iMovie Quit Unexpectedly". This all started when I was adding cutaways- and one clip just would not load. After I tried several times everything froze up. Have you ever heard of something like this? Maybe I pushed a button or somehow changed a setting? Maybe some of the video is corrupt? What do you recommend?
Thanks for any advice you can offer!I have tried all the above and nothing seems to work. Any other suggestions?

Recently, my MacBook Pro started crashing -- a darkened screen would drop down with a "restart your computer" dialog. When restarted, it would run smoothly sometimes, sometimes crash right upon restart, and sometimes run a bit before crashing again. I'm attaching the Panic.log file. Figured I'd hit the forum before I opened a case with Apple.
TIA

Machcne-c-eck capabilitieiesReplacement without grief was never a big concern as I have Apple Care. As someone who has written firmware in the past, I expect product owners that can decipher stack traces, to see what broke where, etc. I'm sure Cupertino has this capability. Genius Bar at the Apple Store is genuinely helpful, no doubt... I'm just the curious sort and hope repair tech from the Bar will give me a proper postmortem of the failure. For now, awaiting parts and this being the holiday weekend, we may not get the board till Tue. Updates then.
Thanks -
Leopard 10.5.8 or 10.5.4 System Crashes?
I need some help. I must have a corrupted file in my "User Library". How do I find it? I've tried to do a Restore and I get a message after 3 hours that says 'error cannot complete operation' or something like that. I have Time Capsule and managed to recover all my files by individually importing the proper folders, but when I tried to import my iTunes Library or my iPhoto Library (9GB- 4000 photos), it would 'Copy' the file very slowly and about half way through it would hang (the 'file count left to be copied' would stop changing and if I wait too long to try and 'Cancel Coping' the whole system crashes (I think the problem is with very, very large Folders) and I am forced to do a hard reboot with the power button. Then I am in real trouble, because it corrupts the System and I need to do a complete Restore and now it is full circle again.
I did some research with 'Apple Discussions' and discovered that the problem is most likely in my 'User Library'. I figure during 'Restore' the System sees some corrupt file(s) and refuses to copy it, and that file probably is the cause of the System Crashes. Is there anything out there that can scan my User Library for files that are corrupted or could cause problems?
I have plenty of memory (2GB). I've used 'System Profiler' and it shows that the memory is good. I've tried Restore 3 or 4 different ways with always the same result as above. I've discovered that with Time Machine, if I keep the Folder small enough (less than 4 or 5 GB) it will copy OK. But if the folder is above that limit then 'All H... Breaks Loose'.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.ocsdmac wrote:

What kind of restore? From the Time Machine interface (the "Star Wars" display)? Restoring your entire system by booting from your Leopard Install disc and using the +Restore from Backups+ option?
and I get a message after 3 hours that says 'error cannot complete operation' or something like that.
Sorry, but we're going to need the exact message.

Do you mean copying from your backups via the Finder?

If the problem is something corrupted, it's probably something in your backups, not your user folder (on your internal HD). Try repairing the sparse bundle:
Open the Disk Utility app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
Mount the sparse bundle by opening the TM drive in finder and double-click on the sparse bundle.
Drag the sparse bundle into Disk Utility's sidebar and do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on it.
Also, any time you do a forced-power off, you can corrupt your internal HD. So use Disk Utility to do a +*Verify Disk+* (not permissions) on it. If that shows errors, you'll have to boot from your Leopard Install disk and use it's copy of DU to repair them. Post back if you need to do this but need help.
I have plenty of memory (2GB). I've used 'System Profiler' and it shows that the memory is good.
No. System Profiler doesn't test your computer's memory. It just shows what's installed.
Do the +*Repair Disk+* and report back with the results and answers to the questions. -
Sudden system crashes for Mac mini 2011
I just came home from a 2-week vacation and my computer has begun to crash and reboot, seemingly when I need the computer to do some task more intensive than Internet browsing.
It started when I tried uploading pictures into iPhoto via my camera's SD card--and it invariably happens whenever I try this--but it has also crashed and rebooted during simple multitasking procedures, like clicking to check my download progress in Safari as my iPhone is syncing in iTunes. Yesterday I had to contend with the white (grey?) screen of death for a few hours as I tried different methods. Fiddling around in Safe Mode let me fix that problem, at least, but the sudden system crashes still persist.
Could my computer have been affected by a lack of use over the last two weeks in the summer heat? It's been hot in the house, but not exceptionally so for August. And before I left I shut it down and unplugged the power cord.
Here are the first several dozen lines of the error report from the most recent crash. If anyone could offer me some help, I'd be very grateful.

Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions, nor do I intend to repeat the test.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Applications from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. A dialog will pop up asking why you want to uninstall it. You don't have to provide that information. Enter anything you like in the text box, then click the Uninstall button. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. That's the only useful feature of "MacKeeper:" it deletes itself. Reboot.
Do not try to uninstall by dragging the MacKeeper icon in the Dock or the LaunchPad to the Trash.
Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” “extenders,” “cleaners,” “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this kind of material is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. -
[solved] system crash: / read-only and /home not mounted
After a complete system crash due to resizing my partitions I am now at the point of restoring everything step by step.
Having had bunches of kernel panics I can now already boot again into my old system. However, / is mounted as read-only manifesting in error messages for programs that access /var and /usr. Furthermore /home is not mounted at all.
# journalctl -b

The UUIDs in fstab are fine as well as the mount options. What else can cause the problem?

Last edited by orschiro (2013-03-22 06:32:06)Hi WonderWoofy,
I did a very dump thing. I deleted my /dev/sda1 ntfs partition, moved /dev/sda2 containing my lvm volumes to the left, resized /dev/sda2 and allocated the free space to my /home logical volume group. Lots of files ended up to be corrupt, I reinstalled all packages and ran fsck several times. Now at least it is starting again. I just found out that the entire root partition is mounted as read-only. In the following is the entire journal excerpt:

Event recovery after system crash?
My system crashed yesterday when I was viewing some recently imported videos in iPhoto. When I rebooted, the videos were gone. I found them in my iPhoto Library (in the folders with yesterday's date) but they're not showing up as an event in iPhoto itself.
Any idea how to re-import them? You have a corrupted library - do NOT import anything into it - you will compound the corruption - you need to fix it - Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database

Hi,
I had a system crash recently, the kind in which everything freezes and you get a failure report on top of the current screen. It read, among others, "Corrupt Skip Lists". (I made a photo of this, so I have other details)
Somewhere on the net someone suggested that one of my RAMs might be broken, so I tried running the computer with only one at a time, but still it's not running very well. The main problems are crashes in InDesign and Photoshop, but occasionaly a system crash happens as well. Oh, and the Apple Hardware Test doesn't work from the system CD either - I don't even get the option to start it via restart/alt.
Anybody any ideas of what else might be wrong, or what I might could try?
Thanks,
B.
Power PC G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Power PC G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)It probably wouldn't hurt to run Disk Utility, and check out the hard drive. Also, repair permissions from Disk utility is also good to do.
Having removed RAM, it would be wise to reset the PRAM/NVRAM. This is adviseable anytime hardware is added, or removed. Here is how to:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
OnyX is fairly good for maintenance routines, but can't really help in isolating trouble. A good, all purpose utility is TechTool. It checks most everything.
If the crash issue continues, and no other hardware problems can be found, you may want to reinstall the OS.
