System Crash - Lost Data

Hey, just about half an hour ago, my iBook completely froze up while I was both A) copying a folder from my Mac HD to an external drive, and B) burning a DVD.
I let it sit there, frozen, for about 10 minutes but the status didn't change, so I shut down the computer by holding down the power button, then restarted.
Now there's over 30 GB of data missing from my hard drive, a bunch of items which I deleted have been restored, and the DVD disc I was burning is not recognised.
Thankfully, the external drive is still there and I had copied my documents to that before the crash.
The only problem I have with this crash is that I had four DVD image files saved in my Movies folder. They are no longer there. I need to restore those files, since they are the backups of several DVDs which were ruined. I hadn't burned them to disc yet (was in the process). It would **** the living **** out of me if those movies are just...gone.
How do I restore my computer to what it was like before it froze up and I manually restarted? The information it has now is what the drive was like a few days ago. There've been many changes since then.
Any help would be appreciated.

You may be able to restore the information to an external hard drive with Prosoft Data Rescue:
http://www.prosofteng.com/
And make sure when burning to DVD you have enough space on the hard drive to burn to DVD in the first place. While with 10.4 it no longer creates a mirror image of what you are about to burn in its burn folder, it still needs enough space for all the aliases of the files being put on the hard drive before the burn takes place.
Hey, just about half an hour ago, my iBook completely froze up while I was both A) copying a folder from my Mac HD to an external drive, and B) burning a DVD.
Also don't try to multitask while burning DVD or backing up your data, burning DVD takes a lot of computer processor time, and attempting to multitask while doing so may yield many situations where the machine looks like it has hung, when in reality it is just processing data in the background and needs time to catch up. And multitasking while backing up means your computer will be attempting to backup a file that may be changing while it backs up, and might get confused which version of the file you want to be backed up. Now the machine may finally figure it out, but only after you have stopped multitasking.

  • System crash during data archiving

    Gurus:
We have a serious concern that is if our R3 server crash during our data archiving runs:
    1) if crash happens at write phase, can we simply remove  the generated archive , restart the write  job?
We are NOT sure if  the second run will archive those records that were archived in the failed first run.
    2) if crash happens at delete phase, a simple restart of the same delete job will be enough? (We use "store before delete").
Because this archiving is too important to us, please help.
    Thanks a lot!

    Christoph:
    Thank you for your reply.
This crash has not happened yet.
We are making a plan about how to cope with this possibility.
But we do not have experience with any crash during archiving process.
Therefore we ask  for people's experience about following scenarios:
    1) if crash happens at write phase, can we simply remove the generated archive , restart the write job?
We are NOT sure if the second run will archive those records that were archived in the failed first run.
    2) if crash happens at delete phase, a simple restart of the same delete job will be enough? (We use "store before delete").
    Would you please help?
    Thank you again.

The program does not do screen captures for you, you would needs something else to help.
Set the thumbnail to maximum size - one per screen.
Now, if you hit the PrintScrn button on your keyboard it will place an image on the Windows clipboard. You would then need to go to an image editing program, paste it in, trim and save.
Alternatively, there are a load of [free] screen capture programs around that would help you automate this process. You might look here, for example: http://www.nonags.com/nonags/grcapt.html

  • Lost all Subclips from project after system crash

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum and tried to find an answer but I'm not seeing it so I apologize if this is covered somewhere else.
I've been using Premiere Pro (CS4) for a couple of years.  I've made extensive use of SUBCLIPS for projects and I found they helped organize the building a complex sequence in several documentaries and they have worked well for me - until my system crashed. While the project opens and I find all media, I find that all SUBCLIPS are gone.  Have I lost them forever?  Can they be recovered?
I have built a new system and installed my old data hard drives, but I have a newly loaded C-drive.  I am running Windows 7 on both the new and the dead system.  I can still extract data from the old C-drive if needed.
I am wondering just how Subclips are stored.  They do not appear to be files – where do they live?  Can they be transferred?
I would really like to avoid the number of hours it will take to rebuild those subclips.
    Thanks!

  • My Vista system crashed due to a corrupted windows file. When I reformatted C:/ & reloaded firefox & tbird, my bookmarks were gone. I have an image of the drive , but I don't know how to recover them and get the data back where I can access it.

Vista system crashed due to a corrupted system file. The C drive was reformatted, and windows reloaded, along with the rest of my programs.
Before the drive was reformatted, an image was made of it on a USB drive to save all the data. Now I need to know how to get the Bookmarks back for Firefox, and the Address Book back for Thunderbird.
    Thanks

Thanks for the quick response. It worked very well, for both Firefox and Tbird.
One hitch, until I remembered: those are all hidden files, in hidden folders. I had a devil of a time finding the "roaming" folder, until I found out how to unhide everything. In years past, I used DOS for that kind of thing. Explorer is much less user-friendly. Now that I know how to do it, it's simple.
    Thanks again for the guidance

  • System Crash in Mac OS 10.5.5: How to restore my data?

A system crash left me unable to log in to my computer, so I had no choice but to archive and reinstall.  My Paml desktop ap is now gone, but this left my Palm user data file intact in user/document/palm/users/myname/files to install.  I need contacts on my computer, but not in the field, so I haven't used my old Visor handheld in years, and it's uncharged and empty, thus I cna't simply sync.  When I reinstall Palm desktop, is there danger of overwriting my user data?  Also, once I finish, how do I import the old data?
    Thanks.

Thanks, I've made my copies.  Now I've run into this, which I've put on a separate post too:
When I run the installer, it gets to 758 of 791 items, then stops and puts up a box saying "Installation did no complete successfully.  Do you wish to attempt to reinstall the software or to quit?"
Repeated attempts bring identical results.  Any thoughts?

  • System crashed and lost library, want to recover

system crashed and lost library, want to recover

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know how to fix the xml file or prevent it's damage except to keep a current backup copy of the domain.sites2 file. You can do that on an hourly basis with Time Machine or use a backup application like Synk Standard which can do incremental backup (i.e. copy just those new or changed files) at any time.
As for separating the sites into their own domain files I use iWebSites to manage over 75 individual sites. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
There is a downside to this method if you're publishing to MobileMe. When publishing multiple sites to MMe from their own separate domain file the last published site will be the default site when using the default URL for that MMe account: http://web.me.com/MobileMeAccountName/. That could mess up any CNAME forwarding if you have a domain name pointed to your default MMe site.

  • Post-iTunes 11 update, system crash and lost preferences

About two hours after updating to iTunes 11 my Macbook Pro on Snow Leopard (latest update), for the first time ever, got a fatal system crash that forced a reboot. After rebooting a lot of my preferences were gone/reset including my home wifi connection. Even after telling my Mac to save the connection it lost it again the next morning. I am blaming iTunes 11 because it was the only thing that changed on my Mac and I have never experienced such a fatal crash before.
Has anyone else experienced a crash after updating?
And more importantly, is Apple going to address the issues with the update or have any suggestions for my persistant perferences loss?
    Thank you.

They worked OK. A recent system crash required reinstallation of the OS (Windows XP) and all applications and drivers, including Audigy's. At first, everything was fine. Then, suddenly, no audio from my (Dell) speakers. Not a peep. I've verified that they are connected properly. Sounds/audio DO play through my head phones. I've tried connecting cheapo Logitech speakers to the sound card ... no sound from them either. I've gone through each troubleshooting steps specified by XP's help system. If your headphones are plugged into the same hole you use for your speakers the problem is not with the soundcard.
I guess the socket on the card may be faulty and just make contact with the headphone pin better but its highly unlightly.

  • Bookmarks from previous system all lost. Firefoxidn't sync when accesed from another system. The account didn't even exist. Why? Help me get it.

My previous system crashed and I just got a new one set up. Installed firefox and tried syncing but my acount wasn't even recognized and I had to sign up again. Which led to all my previous bookmarks getting lost. Is there any way to retrieve all those bookmark data?

hello theja, there has been a change in the sync account system in firefox 29. when you have set-up your account before that (which is likely the case when your credentials weren't known once you tried to sign in to the new sync), you'll need your old username, password and recovery key in order to connect to the old account!
if you have that information available you could try the following procedure:
    # disconnect from the new account through the sync panel in the firefox options.
    # enter '''about:config''' into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up), right-click somewhere in that page & create a new string preference named '''services.sync.username'''with a value like '''fake''' and restart firefox.
    # afterwards you should be able to connect to the old account through the firefox options > sync panel. if this worked and you could import your data this way, please log out of the old sync account again and reconnect to your new account.
