System crash when using blue-ray drive
Hi,
when I use my blue-ray-drive, often the Macbook Pro with Mac OS X hangs, after a few seconds it reboots.
Most replicable is it happens when I insert a media in the drive.
This happens, when I connect the drive via USB and also when I connect it via eSata at the Thunderbolt docking device.
The problem already existed in MacOS 10.10.0
Is this a bug of Mac OS?
I use:
- Macbook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013 wit Mac OS X 10.10.2
- Blue-Ray- Burner Plextor PX-B940SA
- S-Ata to USB 2.0 or eSata bridge/ housing with separate AC-adapter - DeLock 42160
- optional Akitio Thunderbolt Docking unit with eSata-port
Appreciate your help!
kind reagards
Christoph
Uh...no!
You have plugged in a Blu-ray playing optical which will NOT work and may crash your system as long as there is no installed software to support it.
Was there any other additonal driver software that was needed to use this Blu-Ray optical drive under OS X.
DId this drive say anywhere that is is Mac compatible because they make Mac compatible Blu-ray drives.
Not all optical drives (Blu-Ray, too) are Mac compatible.
Where was this drive purchased?
it won't work with Blu-ray discs (and I suspect ANY discs) until you install some Blu-Ray playing software.
Here is a Mac only company that sells only Mac compatible drives and hardware.
Other World Computing (OWC) (macsales.com).
http://eshop.macsales.com/search/external+blu+ray
You still need to purchase BLu-Ray player and authoring software, though, with these drives.

System crash when use underline
Hi.
It seems to have bug in the TextLine creation when use underline...
Look:
for(var iIndex:int = 0; iIndex<10000; iIndex++){
var strTest: String = '<flow:TextFlow paddingTop="3" paddingLeft="3" whiteSpaceCollapse="preserve" xmlns:flow="http://ns.adobe.com/textLayout/2008"><flow:p><flow:span textDecoration="underline">a</flow:span><flow:span></flow:span></flow:p></flow:TextFlow>';
var oTextFlow: TextFlow = TextFilter.importToFlow(strTest, TextFilter.TEXT_LAYOUT_FORMAT);
var arTextLine: Array = new Array();
var oTextLineHandler: Function = function(oTextLine: TextLine) : void { arTextLine.push(oTextLine); }; TextLineFactory.createTextLinesFromTextFlow(oTextLineHandler, oTextFlow, new Rectangle(0, 0, 200, 200));
When u try this, AIR crash. (Flex Builder 3).
Ths code is just an exemple of the bug...I know its useless
Its very strange that if u do not create the TextFlow in the loop, it's ok...
var strTest: String = '<flow:TextFlow paddingTop="3" paddingLeft="3" whiteSpaceCollapse="preserve" xmlns:flow="http://ns.adobe.com/textLayout/2008"><flow:p><flow:span textDecoration="underline">a</flow:span><flow:span></flow:span></flow:p></flow:TextFlow>';
var oTextFlow: TextFlow = TextFilter.importToFlow(strTest, TextFilter.TEXT_LAYOUT_FORMAT);
for(var iIndex:int = 0; iIndex<10000; iIndex++){
var arTextLine: Array = new Array();
var oTextLineHandler: Function = function(oTextLine: TextLine) : void { arTextLine.push(oTextLine); };
TextLineFactory.createTextLinesFromTextFlow(oTextLineHandler, oTextFlow,
new Rectangle(0, 0, 200, 200));
What can i do ? just wait for a beta release or is there a synchro process i miss ?
PS: sorry for my english...More investigation:
First of all, i'm impressed for the reactive community ! Soo thx to all
I tried multiple project
-Gumbo (4.0.0.4021) with Web project (running in iexplorer) -> WORK WITHOUT CRASH
-Gumbo (same) with Air project -> CRASH
-Flex 3 (3.2) with TLF (november 2008 - 111808) with Web project (running in iexplorer) -> WORK WITHOUT CRASH
-Flex 3 (3.2) with TLF (november 2008 - 111808) with Air project -> CRASH
So it's seems to be a problem with AIR (Windows system...I'll try with linux later...I must installed it). -
System crash when using Quatech QSU-100, 4serial port to USB
I'm Using a Quatech QSU-100 4 port 232 to USB converter with a Gateway laptop running XP. When running my labview program to read the ports I get system crashes where the error message is the the USB drivers are at fault. Has anyone sloved this problem?
Have you contacted Quatech with this issue? They might have better answers.

System crashes when using Middle Values on a vertical progress Bar
I've been trying for several days to get a Vertical Slider/Vertical progress bar to work using middle values. Sometimes it'll work fine in the High and Low values mode but crashes when you choose the middle values mode. After many iterations I finally got one verticle slider bar with middle values to work but when I try to add a second slider it crashes again. I'm getting the error that memory cannot be read.
Hi Maureen,
Can you please tell us which version of Xcelsius you are running?
If it's Crystal Xcelsius 4.5, are you running a Hot Fix? If so, which version? This can checked by going to Help --> About Crystal Xcelsius, and then analyzing the Application Version field.
If it's Xcelsius 2008, which version (Present or Engage) are you using?
Are you using Service Pack 1? To check if you're running SP1, you can go to Help --> About Xcelsius. The Build Number field should end with 247 if you have it.
Thanks,

Solve Drive self-ejects and System Hangs when using MULTIPLE external drives!
I've discovered what I think is the underlying reason for many folks reporting similar problems. I bet that I can predict the GUIDs of the drives/docks/cases you're having trouble with! I bet that if you look in Disk Utility, if you click on the drives, you'll find "Connection ID 13757101839304263"!
Oh and if you look in System Profiler and click on 'FireWire' or 'USB' you'll find the GUID 0x30E002E0454647 !
What are the odds? I shouldn't be able to predict them; theyr'e supposed to be unique, after all, but google that number and you'll see that a great many devices all use that GUID. (13757101839304263 in decimal is the same thing as 30E002E0454647 in hex.)
Mac OS seems to rely on them to be unique, and has fits when they aren't. I haven't found a total solution yet, but in the meantime, running this in Terminal can help:
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleFWOHCI.k ext/
Sometimes it helps to run this first to unload before loading the kext (kernel extension):
sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleFWOHCI.k ext/
Enter your password if/when prompted, of course.
In most cases, if you contact your hard drive manufacturer, they'll provide a utility that will fix the drive so that it actually has a truly unique GUID.
I'm mad at Cavalry for hiding the problem and refusing to fix it, W.R.T. the two 1TB HDs I bought from them for around $500, when that was the going price.
I figured it'd be helpful to create a user tip off the discussion in this thread: Disk Drive ejecting itself - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2151621?start=615&tstart=0 This is my first attempt to create a tip. I'm not sure I'm doing it right, but here goes.Sorry but this is just a really bad idea.
1. The airport is ancient.. your speed will be terrible.
2. Hubs filled with USB drives are never reliable.. disks refuse to spin up.. become unavailable.
No.. don't do it.
Plug USB3 hub into the mini and use multiple decent hard drives .. that is fine.. use thunderbolt hub.. use thunderbolt drives if you can afford it.. but never use USB drives on the network.
3. Time Machine is not reliable to external drive on Airport Extreme.. Apple do not support it in any Extreme except the latest one.
If you want the material available to the network buy a NAS. You can buy a cheap NAS of 8TB or so and another 8TB of USB drives which you plug into the NAS for backup.. however.. iphoto is not supposed to ever be put on network drives..
Apple explicitly states you will corrupt it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32 it adds network drives.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
And I quote
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss. If you use both iPhoto and Aperture with the same library, using a Mac OS X Extended formatted volume is recommended. For more information, see Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library.
For backup of the drives.. use Carbon Copy Cloner.. it is much better than TM as you can setup different job.. TM is really a single function.. !! -
System crash when connecting Lacie FW drive
My 2.3Ghz dual G5 (5 months old) crashes EVERY time I plug in the Lacie 320GB external FireWire drive. The screen goes gray from top to bottom and a black window pops up telling me to hold down the power button to reboot.
The drive works PERFECTLY on my Powerbook (1.67Ghz G4).
The Lacie drive is formatted in Windows NT as I borrowed it from my friend.
I tried the FW400 and FW800 ports and got the same result both times.
Must be a nasty problem with 10.4.7?See the thread at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=542803&tstart=0 for somethings to try.

Encore CS3 crashes when importing Blu-Ray timeline
In Premiere Pro CS3 I ad the chapter markers and then export to Encore. In an hour and a half Encore opens
says it is importing M2V file and crashes.
I tried to import into a new project and it failed also.
Sadly it worked perfectly once.
Any workaround solution to another Adobe bug?Try going to Support > Updates then select the drop-down for Premiere Pro. There should be a few update patches to download. After that, do the same for Encore. I remember seeing somewhere in the updates that it resolves that problem.

SQL Developer 3.2 crashes with java error when using OCI/Thick Driver
I just installed SQL Developer 3.2 on my linux desktop. SQL Developer crashes with a java error when I select a database from the object tree.
When I check Use OCI/Thick driver the application will crash when I navigate to the tree and open a database.
The app does not crash then I have Use OCI/Thick driver unchecked.
Here are some details of my environment:

My configuration is:
- Windows 64-bit
- Java 64-bit (1.6.0.34)
- SQL Developer 3.2.09 64-bit
- OCI Instant client 11.2.0.3 64-bit (without installation).
The thing that solved the problem was copying two files, ojdbc5.jar and ojdbc6.jar, from Instant client installation folder to JAVA_HOME/lib/ext folder+.
After that, I haven't had a single crash or error message.
The same trick that solved the problem on 64-bit installation also solved the problem on another windows computer with 32-bit SQL Developer installation. -
Use of Pioneer BDR-2208 blu-ray drive with MacPro
Any suggestions for getting a Pioneer BDR-2208 blu-ray drive to work with a Mac Pro running OSX 10.8.3.? The machine recognizes the drive with the system profiler, but I was able to access it only one time and never again. It's installed in second position beneath the factory DVD drive, and pressing Option-Eject brings up a message box suggesting, incorrectly, that I have loaded a blank DVD and requesting an action. Pioneer tech support says that it was intended for use for a Windows machine, but indicates that 3rd-party software might enable its use on a Mac.
Have you tried Roxio Toast 11 Titanium?
This should provide all the functions you require but.... will not provide "all" features associated with the 2208.
"All" features are software based and currently written for Windows only.
I currently use the BDR-208 as my secondary optical drive and with Toast,.... it works perfectly.
Toast 11 Titanium provides Mac drivers for BD and BDXL media not included in Mountian Lion.
I too am considering the 2208 (due to BDXL) but seeking feedback like yours before I purchase.
If my budget allows.... I will try the 2208 with Toast 11 at some point but cannot provide anything but suggestion at this point in time.
Please let me know if this solves your troubles. -

All of a sudden, my computer running on Windows XP doesn't recognize my iPod touch anymore. Changing the USB-Port and re-installing iTunes did not help. The actualization of the driver resulted in the system to recognize the iPod for a couple of seconds, but then the system crashed and a blue screen appeared, which made it necessary to restart the system. I had the same thing four times today now and have absoultely no idea what else I could do. Can anyone help?
Thank you in advance!

Blue screen of death when building blu-ray in Encore CS6
I recently purchased a new laptop and installed Adobe Master Collection CS6. I purchased the laptop for video capture and editing, as well as for blu-ray authoring.
Unfortunately, although the computer and software works fine for video capture and editing, I am unable to author a blu-ray. For authoring, I am using Adobe’s Encore CS6. After checking and previewing my creation, I attempt to build to disc using Encore. About 2 seconds after clicking the build disc in Encore, I get the “blue screen of death” (BSOD). This happens every time I try to build to blu-ray (only blu-ray has this issue; I am able to build to a DVD). I am using an external blu-ray drive on USB 3.0.
I am using Encore version 6.0.0.492
Here are the blu-ray drive specs:

When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help -
Internal Blu-ray drive upgrade.
Hi, as the ongoing saga of desiring a Blu-ray Read & Write drive in a Macbook Pro 17" is still a painful bag of hurt for many people including myself, I still can't help try and track down a suitable possible solution and likely contender.
I previously had upgraded the MacBook Pro's internal 2.5" Hard Disk Drive after having learned at the time that the internal cleareance of my early 2009 unibody MBP 17" allowed a capacious maximum form-factor 'thickness' of 12.5mm instead of the usual 9.5mm for an internal HDD. This was an extremely rewarding piece of info and allowed me to grace the MBP with a 1TB HDD inside, which is absolutely fantastic especially when using space for Bootcamp and of course dealing with Hi Definition video files using FCS, in which you can 'never' have enough space for (transcoding into Apple Pro Res can turn out some seriously huge files). The now fitted internal 1TB drive has now enabled the MacBook Pro 17 to become mobile once again and not fully relying on external drives.
Except Blu-ray.
I'm personally not keen on attaching an external Blu-ray drive which is why I initially got a MBP for mobility and therefore still looking for an eventual compatible internal version. The irony is that Final Cut Studio can edit and process Hi Definition Media, albeit without proper large optical-disc storage media to store it on and FCS's Compressor will even transcode it to Blu-ray format and burn on output to Blu-ray disc (even has a Blu-ray New Batch template). Toast 10 & 11 Titanium deals with Blu-ray (via it's Blu-ray plugin). Therefore it continues to be a painful legacy that the MBP is devoid of one.
My question is this, if upgrading the internal Super-drive to another optical drive, what are the exact dimension restriction and therefore the allowed thickness form-factor for a slot-loading optical drive on it's 'own' and with it's securing bracket/bezel. Is the bracket/bezel a standard fixture that will de-assemble and be re-used with a new replacement, or would any replacement drive come with a new suitable on affixed.
Any thoughts on the following two likely contenders. The first drive by FastMac Reads & Writes Blu-ray, the second drive by Sony Reads Blu-ray only but both makes read & write DVD's (no doubt Sony has a writeable slot-loading version somewhere buried within one of their Web Site because I had a Sony Laptop about 4 or 5 years ago that burned Blu-ray). The FastMac drive looks promising if the company is legit:-

It doesn't matter if for at least the immediate time being, it may not be actually possible to play Blu-ray movies within OS X lacking the kernels for it. If a compatible drive was found, then the rewards are:-
Storing massive amounts of data (up to 50GB on one disc). Fantastic fro backups and archiving.
Being able to FINNALLY output edited Hi Def video/movies from Final Cut Studio onto a Blu-ray disc and then playing that on a dedicated external Blu-ray player elsewhere.
Booting-up in Bootcamp for attempting to play-back Blu-ray movies using windows drivers, software and built-in OS kernels. (I'm not a Windows person, but can't deny it can save the day where some things are concerned)
Future-proofing; if one day soon Apple smiles on us all and releases a system OS update that enables 'full' Blu-ray support (or some other upgrade)I have noted that on numerous wish lists for Mac enhancements has been Blue Ray capability. I looked at the Fast mac web site and the specifications were impressive. When I saw the price, I had to have the Heimlich maneuver performed. This is not to dissuade you or anyone else to purchase one. It simply is a reflection of my cheapness ex. for me SSD are overpriced for the value received but I take no issue for those who but them.
What I find to be very peculiar is the issue of apparent compatibility with only pre-unibody MBPs. We know that these MBP are slower than the subsequent generations. Blu-ray vidio files are huge. To load, tranferr, edit and compile these such files is best served with a fast processor. To install this on an older MBP seem like simultanously taking a step forward and a step backward.
Your list of virtues has merit but I have to take exception with your 'Future Proofing'. Apple has a habit of going down the road less traveled. If and when they integrate Blu-ray capability in their MBPs, it does not follow that the Fast Mac drive will be the same or have software compatibility.
I have both a pre-unibody MBP and a unibody MBP. I have changed the optical drive on the old machine and I have just looked inside the newer one (when I upgraded the HHD). They both APPEAR to be identical but I suspect there may be subtle physical differences. Hence this may be the reason why it can be installed only pre-unibody MBPs. (I can be bribed to take the both out and compare them!)
I would suggest to contact the technical department at OWC and find out if they are familiar with this product and what opinions they may have. I have dealt with them on several occasions and they seem knowledgeable.
Ciao.
