System crashes when put to sleep or restart

My system crashes when put to sleep or when I click re-start. This also happens when applications start and need to take over the entire screen. Once it crashes, I cannot start the computer for approx 5 minutes. I cannot re-start in safe mode because it also crashes. I cannot start with the application disc because the dvd drive pops open when I start the system. I have tried shutting the system down from the menu bar and the screen exits to the desktop window, but doesn't shut off. I have used disc utility to repair permissions and have re-set the pram, but the problem remains. I have a G4 gigabit/ethernet, running OSX 10.4.11, with an Apple Studio Display and ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card. This has been going on for a while - I am not sure if it started when I installed OSX tiger or when I added two new ram memory chips (I have four added, 2 512 SDRAMM and 2 128 SDRAMM). Please advise. Thank you.

I am not sure if it started when I installed OSX tiger or when I added two new ram memory chips (I have four added, 2 512 SDRAMM and 2 128 SDRAMM).
The absolute first step in troubleshooting is to remove the recently added RAM.
That will remove question regarding the RAM.
Have you tried a Safe Mode boot (hold Shift while booting)?
This will allow for automatic system repairs. While in safe mode, does the sleep function work?
From Safe mode, does the restart function work?
If after removing the RAM, and after Safe mode, the problem persists, a PMU reset may be worth trying.
The PMU controls all power functions, sleep and shut down and start. Corruption in the PMU will cause problems with these functions, and a reset will clear this up if the PMU is the root cause.

How do I resolve system instability and correct these warning messages? I have Leopard running on other Macs (iMac and Macbook Pro) with no issues

    Hi Joe,
I'm having the exact same issue - when my PB is going to sleep - because I have left the computer on - makes it somehow go into a DEEP SLEEP - and the system can only be brought back into a running state by pressing the START button - and then the system reboots and the system clock goes back to zero (or something..) Hope that an update soon will fix it.
The only fix I can suggest is to set the system NOT to sleep by itself - but that's somehow a waste of energy to me.

Keep freezing up when put to sleep, will not wake up. iMac G5, system 10.5.8, help. What version of Flash do I need?

Probably the intermittent problem that effects some users (including me at various times). It seems that Bluetooth fails to wake properly. The 'fix' that works for me is to go to System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

  • Crash when waking from sleep

My Mac Pro 2x2.66 with 1GB of memory crashes when I try to awaken it.
I tried using control + eject (rather than the Apple menu sleep as the instruction book suggests) to put the machine to sleep as suggested here. For a while it worked. Now that’s quit working too.
I have tried different settings as I can think of on Energy Saver in Systems Preferences, including default. No difference.
When put to sleep or when it goes to sleep automatically, the LED on the front pulses as it’s supposed to. But when I try to awaken it by pushing the space bar of the keyboard, it reboots.
Have tried all the usual — unplugging all the USB devices etc — with no change.
The problem occurs whether the energy saver preference is locked or unlocked. But when the machines reboots, energy saver is always unlocked, even when it was locked when it was put to sleep. Is this normal?
Anyone have any idea what might be plaguing this otherwise great machine?
    Mac Intel 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

If you want to lock control panels, use the Security preference.
If you want a good book on OS X, The Missing Manual series are a good start.
I would look for 3rd party background startup items; repair the drive with Disk Utility and Disk Warrior - boot from your emergency drive, or at least from a backup clone.
I would not work with just 1GB. I did, and was always using 900MB all the time (or more).
At one point, my PCIe FW controller and Apple Display prevented sleep (freeze on wake) but 10.4.9 cured that (or disconnect ACD and use another display) or remove PCIe.
Run Apple Hardware Test just to be sure.
Deep clean your caches. Test your prefs for corruption. Do a clean install on another drive and then only carefully add one item every two days to see if it works.
I've seen old VGA displays cause problems too. Or video card.
My guess, your system's directory is getting clobbered and corrupt in the process only making for more symptoms. During shutdown or logout, the system writes to directory and backup directory. OS X is not immune from corruption and the journal filesystem is not going to protect a hard restart.
Don't rule out anything. Even the keyboard as the culprit.
Trying "all the usual" usually means doing a SMC reset for starters.

Ignore the MacKeeper ad no matter what else you decide.
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Just sits there occupying very little space & never interfering, unless you need to invoke it in Single User Mode.

  • IOS 8.1 installed yesterday has spoilt my iPad 2! There are no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is now sluggish, juddery and strange, battery is draining fast and it no longer security locks when put to sleep.

I am so cross because iOS 8.1 installed yesterday has ruined my iPad 2! There are now no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is slow, juddery and strange, the battery is draining fast and the iPad no longer security locks when put to sleep.  I have checked all the settings, done a number of resets and really wish I hadn't bothered and stayed with iOS 7 when it all worked like a dream.  I thought that by waiting until 8.1, teething problems would have been fixed and I am just horrified that there is no going back!  I am not the only iPad owner that has this set of problems so why didn't you warn us Apple!  What are you going to do to help us?  I do not want to be forced into buying a newer version of iPad because you broke this one!

In spite of the fact that you said you checked the settings, I still believe that you have system sounds muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

AS for your other issues, have you done any other troubleshooting like resetting your iPad, resetting all settings or doing a complete factory reset?

  • G4 mirror/when put to sleep computer shuts down, power up problems

I'm having some strange problems here, and I've looked through the topics and I can't find one that exactly fits my issues.
Recently my mac shut off when I put it to sleep and It would not turn back on, also the button would not light up when pressed. I unplugged it, checked the power source and when I plugged it back in the button light would come on when immediately touched and then go out, again not starting(note: my external hard drive comes on and after a few seconds shuts off). After trying it several times I gave up. About 4 hours later I tried it again and it started.
This has happened every time I've either shut down or put it to sleep. I feel very uncomfortable leaving my computer on all the time.
I tried the PMU reset my mac immediately started up, I thought problem solved until I put it to sleep again. Shut down wouldn't start up.
Exchanged batteries with the exact same computer from work, did a PMU reset, the Mac started right up. Put it to sleep same deal.
I am buying a new battery today.
I find it strange that when the mac is immediately shut down either by me or when it goes to sleep, the button light won't come on unless I unplug it from the back and replug it in. Then the button light will come on but not necessarily start up. I sometimes have to wait hours or it will come back on immediately.
right now its a crap shoot.
    please help if you can.

Yuk. I don't even like to discuss this, but depending on the service, the filter caps in the psu and many other places in the system wear out and start causing problems. I would start monitoring voltages coming from the psu to the mother board using a digital multimeter. You can probe the white connector from the psu to the mother board from the top of the connector using a paper clip or dental pick on the connector pins. I believe this diagram is applicable to most of the ppc Macs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58561
Also consider that your drive may be at fault here. My DA does not like to be put to sleep. It does strange things when put to sleep.

  • Installed E3000 now system crashes when online

Soon after installing the E3000 I began to experience frequent system crashes when online.  Installation seemed to progress without any issues.  PC, Windows XP Pro SP3, is wired though router, also able to access net with netbook, Windows 7 Starter, without issues.  After several crashed I pulled up the event log and here is what I found.  Tried to use Linksys online chat for assistance but they said the problem was with my computer and that I needed to contact my vendor.  Since I built this pc I'm on my own and would appreciate any guidance on how to serolve this.
    Thank you for your time.

    To assign permissions
Using Regedit, navigate to the following registry value
    HKCR\Clsid\clsid value\localserver32
The clsid value is the information displayed in the message.
In the right pane, double-click Default. The Edit String dialog box is displayed. Leave this dialog box open.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Component Services.
In the Component Services snap-in, expand Computers, expand My Computer, and double-click DCOM Config.
In the right pane, locate the program by using its friendly name.
Right-click the program name, and then select Properties.
On the Security tab, in the Launch and Activation Permissions group box, select Customize, and then click Edit.
When I get to #6 I do not know which program/friendly name to select.  How do I know which one is the issue?
    Thanks for the assistance.

  • Crashing when waking from sleep

Are you using the onboard audio, or you have an additional sound card installed on your system. If you are using the onboard audio, check if you have a proper installation of the Realtek HD audio drivers, and if you are using another sound card, you have to disable the onboard audio controller in BIOS.

  • G5 WON'T WAKE FROM SLEEP AND RESTARTS WHEN PUT TO SLEEP

My apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong category. I am having some major problems with my iMac G5 running Tiger. The first problem was that when I put the computer to sleep it would not wake up from sleep.
I took it to the Apple store and they found nothing wrong with it. Now when I try to put the computer to sleep it restarts. I thought maybe I had just pressed the restart rather than sleep mode by mistake but when I attempted to put it to sleep a second time it restarted just like before.
It's a bizarre problem I know but I'm wondering if you have any ideas as Apple says if they can't get the computer to recreate the error they won't do anything to fix it

Do you have any USB devices connected (other than keyboard and mouse)? If the display has an USB cable, disconnect that too.

  • Laptop Crashes when resuming from sleep

    Hi
I am running a Macbook Pro with retina display. OS X 10.8.3 - Mountain Lion.

      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro10,1

      L3 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          8 GB
Peripherals: Magic Mouse, Thunderbolt to gigabyte Ethernet connector
I use this machine while connecting to a network using an Ethernet cable at work. During the day, I leave the machine and it automatically goes to sleep and when I resume from sleep there does not seem to be any problems.
The problem is when I put the machine off to sleep before going home, and then when I resume the next day; the system crashes.
I have been searching high and dry for a solution. Some forums talk about the OS' bluetooth management having a bug, others talk about network unable to reconnect and even read something that talks about a wifi issue.
I cant pin point the root cause of the problem nor do I have a workaround. I have to shutdown every night.
It seems that this problem has been around for a while and it scares me that Apple has not released a fix for this issue.
What should I do to resolve this issue?

  • 10.5.2 Kernel Panic When Put To Sleep

After upgrading to 10.5.2 yesterday, my rig has experienced a kernel panic four of the six times I have put it to sleep.
If anyone else has had this problem, were you able to resolve it?
And can anyone help me analyze this panic report? Thanks, if I can't solve this, I will visit the La Cantera genius bar and report back in a few days.

Final update on this (unfortunately)...after ten days of troubleshooting 10.5.2, I have reverted back to 10.5.1.
I tried a clean install of 10.5 and a combo upgrade to 10.5.2 on both an internal and external hard drive...with and without the graphics update; I zapped my PRAM; I replaced my battery; I cannot run an Apple Hardware test due to the processor upgrade that I have installed, but no problems were indicated by TechTool Pro, DiskWarrior or Disk Utility. The bottom line is that 10.5.2 and the hard drive connected to my ATA bus will not coexist. My last gasp was installing 10.5.2 on the internal hard drive on the ATA bus and using it as the startup disk; install and restart were uneventful, but I was unable to open any application or folder without the system crashing/freezing. Again, I have not had any problems with this drive using any other system.
Part of me hopes this is a bug that gets resolved in 10.5.3, because this G4 has been a great
computer for over seven years now. But then, so was my Mac Plus...and I only fire that up once or twice a year now...
