System crashes when waking from sleep & repair disk permissions
Having trouble with MacPro locking when trying to wake from sleep. Tried to repair permissions using disk utility in OSX but get the following SUID warning:
"usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
"System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources/ DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
"System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Resou rces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
"System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner" has been modified and will not be repaired.
"System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/readconfi g" has been modified and will not be repaired.
"System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/writeconf ig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
"usr/libexec/authopen" has been modified and will not be repaired.
"System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired
How do I resolve system instability and correct these warning messages? I have Leopard running on other Macs (iMac and Macbook Pro) with no issues
Hi Joe,
I'm having the exact same issue - when my PB is going to sleep - because I have left the computer on - makes it somehow go into a DEEP SLEEP - and the system can only be brought back into a running state by pressing the START button - and then the system reboots and the system clock goes back to zero (or something..) Hope that an update soon will fix it.
The only fix I can suggest is to set the system NOT to sleep by itself - but that's somehow a waste of energy to me.

Crashing when waking from sleep
This has just recently started, but my mac pro now occasionally (increasingly) crashes when waken from sleep. I've verified disks, repaired permissions in safe mode, reset my preferences, all of that fun stuff but it continues. Attached are screenshots of my error reports. I would appreciate it if anyone could provide some feedback as to what appears to be the problem.

http://brandondavis.us/me/problem3.jpg
http://brandondavis.us/me/problem4.jpgCheck your BIOS revision. If it is below 5.10 get update here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-68611-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&...=
It should solve the issue with resuming from sleep mode.

System Crash after waking from sleep
Hi guys,
Running 10.9.2 on 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, GeForce GTX 775M, 3TB Fusion Drive. No extras added - everything fitted by Apple. Only thing attached is the CD drive via USB, the Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and the ethernet cable.
Today I have had 5 or 6 system crashes. What happens is that the spinning beach ball kicks off and nothing will work except holding the power to restart the machine.
I think that each time it has happened has been after the machine wakes from sleep and doesn't always happen immediately but after a few minutes or so.
I have run Disk Utility on startup to Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk. I have reset PRAM etc.
As far as I know nothing has been installed from before, other than the Epson Printer Drivers 2.1.7 update combo from the Apple Site to get an old scanner to work. Didn't have problems the day I installed that (yesterday).
One thing I have had probably more so since 10.9.2 is the internet speeds slow down (both WiFi and ethernet). But no problems with the modem / router that I know of and my ISP can find no problems. Interestingly I wonder whether this has also happened from sleep (eg broadband speeds getting slower).
I'm not quite sure where to find any possible error logs or which ones may be useful but any help is much appreciated. ThanksIf anyone else has this problem and maybe to help...
I found that the cause of my system crashes was somewhere within the Epson printer drivers and other associated drivers I downloaded from - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1398. (Epson Printer Drivers v2.17 for OSX).
As you're unable to 'show package contents' on right-click from this downloaded file, I installed the excellent Pacifist and looked at the files within the download listed above. I then manually removed every trace of every file except the one specific to my need (an Epson Perfection 1670 scanner). With those files gone, I haven't had any problems.
So I believe my system crashes were related to a file within the Epson Printer Drivers v2.17 for OSX. -
My Mac Pro 2x2.66 with 1GB of memory crashes when I try to awaken it.
I tried using control + eject (rather than the Apple menu sleep as the instruction book suggests) to put the machine to sleep as suggested here. For a while it worked. Now that’s quit working too.
I have tried different settings as I can think of on Energy Saver in Systems Preferences, including default. No difference.
When put to sleep or when it goes to sleep automatically, the LED on the front pulses as it’s supposed to. But when I try to awaken it by pushing the space bar of the keyboard, it reboots.
Have tried all the usual — unplugging all the USB devices etc — with no change.
The problem occurs whether the energy saver preference is locked or unlocked. But when the machines reboots, energy saver is always unlocked, even when it was locked when it was put to sleep. Is this normal?
Anyone have any idea what might be plaguing this otherwise great machine?
Mac Intel 2.66 Mac OS X (10.4.9)If you want to lock control panels, use the Security preference.
If you want a good book on OS X, The Missing Manual series are a good start.
I would look for 3rd party background startup items; repair the drive with Disk Utility and Disk Warrior - boot from your emergency drive, or at least from a backup clone.
I would not work with just 1GB. I did, and was always using 900MB all the time (or more).
At one point, my PCIe FW controller and Apple Display prevented sleep (freeze on wake) but 10.4.9 cured that (or disconnect ACD and use another display) or remove PCIe.
Run Apple Hardware Test just to be sure.
Deep clean your caches. Test your prefs for corruption. Do a clean install on another drive and then only carefully add one item every two days to see if it works.
I've seen old VGA displays cause problems too. Or video card.
My guess, your system's directory is getting clobbered and corrupt in the process only making for more symptoms. During shutdown or logout, the system writes to directory and backup directory. OS X is not immune from corruption and the journal filesystem is not going to protect a hard restart.
Don't rule out anything. Even the keyboard as the culprit.
Trying "all the usual" usually means doing a SMC reset for starters. -
Safari crashes when waking from sleep or screen saver
Since I upgraded to Safari 3.2.1, it's crashed on me almost every time I've woken the computer from sleep or from screen saver. I tried pulling out all input managers (Saft, etc.), but it made no difference. Here's the latest crash report. Any help would be terrific, thanks!

2G Macbook air crashes when waking from sleep
My MBA 13" is near perfect, the only problem is, 50% of the time when I wake the computer from sleep, the grey curtain comes down and i'm prompted to reboot.
Happening quite a lot, it's still under warranty, is there a fix?http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742

Macbook crashing when waking from sleep
I have 10.6.8 on a Macbook. Whenever I wake it from sleep, there is a chance where it will completely crash. I open it up, a quick flash of light, and then dead. I've lost notes and papers due to this and would love to know what's going on.
Wrong forum.

10.8.4 consistent nvidia crash when waking from sleep
On a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro I am getting a crash every time the nvidia card is engaged and the laptop goes to sleep. This only started occuring after ugprading to 10.8.4 and I have since zeroed, formatted and reinstalled with a minimal set of applications. The crash is easily reproducible and I can also verify that it only occurs if the computer goes to sleep while the nvidia card has been activated (using gfxCardStatus) not if it sleeps while the Intel onboard is engaged. Unfortunately I only use OSX to use music software like Ableton Live. Whenever I start Ableton Live 9 the nvidia GPU is engaged (why I have no idea) then if I walk away from the computer for 20 minutes I've crashed.

Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Trusteer software has caused many issues for Mac users with Safari as noted from the results of an ASC Trusteer / Rapport search here > Community Search: Apple Support Communities
Uninstall Rapport (Trusteer) >> Uninstalling Rapport on Mac OS X | Support
Restart your Mac after the Trusteer software is uninstalled.
If the Mac generaes another kernel panic, McAfee is problematic and has also caused kernel panics for Mac users. Check the McAfee site for uninstall instructions.
The ab.k.engine, botht spsys.drivers, logmein, and BlackBerryUSB are problematic, but I'd start with removing Trusteer first.
If you want to have aniti virus sofware installed, download and install ClamXav but best to not install any software at all until the kernel panics stop.
ClamXav is free and Mountain Lion v10.8 compatible.

Keychain is read-only when waking from sleep
So, when waking from sleep my keychain becomes read-only and I'm forced to restart since many of the applications I tend to use (itunes, safari, skype. messages and disk utility) start giving me error messages or are unresponsive. I've tried repairing the keychain, deleting and creating a new keychain, reinstalling the OS (10.8), resetting the ACLs using the recovery partition, repairing permissions using the recovery partition. The only thing I haven't tried is wiping out the drive and installing the OS anew which I would like to avoid . I am on a 2010 13" macbook pro using 10.8.3. I don't think it started after an update. I did recently install a new hard drive since the previous hard drive died. I used time machine to restore my apps and user account. Advice anyone? Thanks
Hello-
Well I spoke to soon. The problem started a few weeks later. Since then I have installed the OS on to a new hard drive. I did import my user account from a time machine backup but did not import the Apps and System settings. I created a new account and moved my media and documents from my old account to the new account. I then deleted the old account. After all that I am still getting the read-only problem with Keychain. It now happens while I am using my laptop, not just when it wakes from sleep. As I mentioned before the issue is intermittent, about once or twice a week. The last occurrence happened a few minutes after I booted up. I have pasted the log below. I have taken it in to Apple and they ran a check-up and everything came back ok. I'm concerned because my apple care ends in about a week. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

IBook no longer asking for a password when waking from sleep or screensaver
My iBook was fine until I installed the Security Update 2006-002 via software update. After the "required" reboot (reboot #1) everything functioned as normal.
On a subsequent reboot (#2) and several other reboots trying to correct the problem (#3-#5) I've found that my iBook no longer asks for a password when coming out of the screensaver, or when waking from sleep.
Yes, I have checked the security pref panel every time and have ensured the checkbox is checked. I even Sudo'd the panel just to be sure.
I downloaded the aforementioned security update and re-applied it. It corrected the problem during the same "required" reboot (#1), but after rebooting the computer a 2nd and 3rd time the problem has came up again.
I wish my iBook wasn't sick! Thanks, I tried searching as best as I could to see if this is a repost.
iBook G4 1.2 Mac OS X (10.4.5) All updates via Software Update
iBook G4 1.2 Mac OS X (10.4.5)I don't have a specific fix but this generalized fix seems to take care of most problems for me. Download Cocktail, Onyx or MainMenu then run Rebuild Launch Services database, the maintenance (cron) scripts, clean all caches then Repair Permissions and restart.
To test it don't keep restarting, that's extra wear and tear on the computer, just put it to sleep and wake it or log out then back in.
If that doesn't work get Disk Warrior and rebuild the directory.
And if that doesn't work do an archive and install then one big upgrade.
But don't go past running one of those three utilities until you see if someone has a better fix for you. It might be as simple as trashing a preferences file. -
Kernel panic when waking from sleep
My eMac (1Ghz, 256 Mb RAM, dual boot OS 9.2.2/OS X 10.2.8(upgraded from 10.2.4)) has a recurring but intermittent issue where it suffers from a kernel panic when waking from sleep.
In the past I managed to fix the issue by resetting PRAM and NVRAM, but this doesn't seem to work anymore.
Things I've found out until now:
- Apple Hardware Test and Techtool Deluxe can't find anything wrong (all tests are passed).
- No kernel panic log is written - apparently the kernel panic occurs before the log can be written.
- Crash appears to be network-related. My IP address and network card address are shown at the bottom of the panic window.
- After restarting, Finder windows revert to a state from two or three days ago...
- Login items aren't the problem. I removed them all - this doesn't make any difference.
- no weird things in the startup items folders, AFAIK.
I'm on the verge of reinstalling OS X, but I think I already did this a couple of years ago, and it didn't help.
Please help.
ThomasNominally, you'd download the OS X Update Combo 10.2.8 after reinstalling 10.2.4, then use Software Update to identify any additional security and other software updates. There was an issue with early builds of 10.2 failing the 10.2.8 udate if done directly, but working fine if one first updated to an intermediate version such as 10.2.6; I think that problem affected 10.2 through 10.2.3 and your 10.2.4 should be good to go directly to 10.2.8, but if there are any problems, you can go back to 10.2.4, then search the Apple Downloads link for 10.2.6, then 10.2.8
With 10.2.x, it's prudent to run Repair Permissions after each OS and security update before moving on to the next. -
Spinning ball when waking from sleep
I'm running Leopard (10.5.7) on a PPC and over the last 2 days it's been freezing when waking from sleep.
On waking cursor moves, and Spaces works but as I click on each open application they lock up. iStat also freezes.
The panic log has a reference to com.apple.iokit.IOATAFamily - does this point to hard drive issue??

The machine has 1 HD installed that's partitioned in 2 - OS on one volume, data on the other.
In Disk Utility the boot volume's name is disk0s10 rather that the name I gave it (the other volume name is OK). Could this have anything to do with the problem? -
IMac G5 Dies When Waking From Sleep
I have a Rev A iMac G5 I bought in 2004. Recently it started doing some weird stuff when waking from sleep. After looking at some of the other posts, I think this is going to be repetitive, but I thought I would see if anyone had any suggestions
After either putting the computer to sleep or letting it go to sleep, it will frequently die after the mouse has been clicked to wake it up. I have tried resetting both the SMU and PRAM as well as repairing disk permissions and repairing the disk. None of this has seemed to help. Occasionally, I get lucky and am able to wake it from sleep normally, but this doesn't happen often. After it dies following the mouse click, I can unplug it and then plug it back in and it will start up normally. Interestingly, it will start up from shutdown normally as well as restart normally. Additionally, as long as it doesn't go to sleep, I think you can typically use it as long as you want and it won't quit.
Today, I took the back cover off and messed around with it for awhile. The diagnostic LED behavior seems odd to me. LED #1 comes on when it is plugged into the outlet. When following Apple's instructions for troubleshooting a computer that won't start up, mine does fine because as I said it will start up normally if you unplug it and then plug it back in. Because of this, I set my computer to go to sleep quickly with inactivity. Although it did wake normally at least once, it died numerous times. The irregularity seems to occur with LED #2. One time it "died", I believe LED #2 actually remained lit and something seemed to still be working based on noise. However, the green light for the "caps lock" button wouldn't come on. Other times LED #2 would go out when it died after pushing the mouse with it asleep. During these times, I could push the internal power button and LED #2 would briefly light up, but nothing more than that would happen. On more than one occasion I would then push the SMU reset button and then push the internal power button again at which point LED #2 would fail to come on at all. After pushing the power button (and occasionally pushing the SMU button again) what seemed to be a random number of times, the computer would all the sudden start up normally again.
My top 3 guesses are a failed power supply, failed logic board, or exhausted PRAM battery (I have never changed it). The first two may be a bit to pricey for me to consider replacing. If they are the problem, I may just settle for setting the computer to never sleep. Does this sound like it could be caused by the PRAM battery going out?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Message was edited by: Joshua213My bad on not reporting back sooner. Indeed, replacing the PRAM battery did not fix the problem. The situation seems odd to me as I was able to sometimes wake the computer from sleep without it quitting while others times it dies. It does fine as long as it doesn't go to sleep. I can start it up and shut it down with no problems; additionally, it appears to do fine even when left on for long periods of time as long as it doesn't go to sleep. To be correct it doesn't seem to so much be the state of "sleeping", but the act of trying to wake it up from sleep. I don't think ventilation is a problem.
What I have done is just set it to not sleep. We just shut it down once in awhile. Rather than forking out the money, I think I will just use this work around as long as it continues to work. -
System crashes when put to sleep or restart
My system crashes when put to sleep or when I click re-start. This also happens when applications start and need to take over the entire screen. Once it crashes, I cannot start the computer for approx 5 minutes. I cannot re-start in safe mode because it also crashes. I cannot start with the application disc because the dvd drive pops open when I start the system. I have tried shutting the system down from the menu bar and the screen exits to the desktop window, but doesn't shut off. I have used disc utility to repair permissions and have re-set the pram, but the problem remains. I have a G4 gigabit/ethernet, running OSX 10.4.11, with an Apple Studio Display and ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card. This has been going on for a while - I am not sure if it started when I installed OSX tiger or when I added two new ram memory chips (I have four added, 2 512 SDRAMM and 2 128 SDRAMM). Please advise. Thank you.
I am not sure if it started when I installed OSX tiger or when I added two new ram memory chips (I have four added, 2 512 SDRAMM and 2 128 SDRAMM).
The absolute first step in troubleshooting is to remove the recently added RAM.
That will remove question regarding the RAM.
Have you tried a Safe Mode boot (hold Shift while booting)?
This will allow for automatic system repairs. While in safe mode, does the sleep function work?
From Safe mode, does the restart function work?
If after removing the RAM, and after Safe mode, the problem persists, a PMU reset may be worth trying.
The PMU controls all power functions, sleep and shut down and start. Corruption in the PMU will cause problems with these functions, and a reset will clear this up if the PMU is the root cause.
