System crashing or no booting when battery is inserted

Today I've experienced a problem I've never seen on my machine.
It's a MacBook Pro, early 2008.
It freezed while I was using it, something never occured. So I rebooted it, and after 10 minutes it freezed again. When I rebooted it, it didn't reach the gray screen, the screen was basically off, but the power led in front was on. It was very scary because 6 months ago I suddenly had the same screen when waking up the machine and I had to replace the logic board.   I have to say that after the logic board replacement the machine has always worked as expected.
I've resetted the SMC and the PRAM, but the problem was still the same. I powered off/on the machine a couple of time, and I've reach the Apple screen once, but it crashed again while loading the system (basically the spinning wheel stopped and I had to power off the machine again).
I did the last test: removing the battery and testing it just with the AC current. And it worked. System is on and everything worked ok. Since the machine turned on I tried to repair the permission and verify the disk. The disk was not ok, I had to repair it via external drive.
So I thought it could be ok, I reinserted the battery and I powered on the machine. And it freezed again. I tried a couple of time and was always the same.
So I took off the battery, and now it's working.
My battery was in bad condition. It didn't last the 300 cycles-life "legend". Since I upgraded to snow leopard (180 cycles then), the status battery was changing from "service battery / replacing soon / replacing now". It was still providing an hour and so of power so I didn't care too much (my fault, I know).
My question is: could a bad battery be causing this behaviour?
Should I buy a new battery or the symptoms decribed could be something more? As I said, I already had to spend 600 euros for the logic board replacement (for a 3 years machine.....)
Thx a lot for your support, hope someone can help me

You clearly have a hardware problem of some sort, so take your machine in for service as soon as you can. An Apple Store or authorized service provider will have good batteries to use for testing purposes and proprietary diagnostic testing software that's not available to you or me.

  • Widget System crash -- no longer booting

About a week ago I used Disk Utility and Disk Warrior to clean up my Powerbook G4 (standard stuff), and everything has been working fine.
But today I was looking at my weather widget when I got a system error. If you're in the widgets when you get an error, the screen freezes waiting for input. I couldn't get out of the widgets so I couldn't click the system error dialog box to dismiss it. I couldn't even escape/crash out of the widgets and finally had to do a hard shut down (pressing on the power key).
Now my computer won't boot. I get a nice chime, but that blank grey apple logo screen and nothing. I got a similar screen about a month ago after installing the latest OS update, but once I just let it sit for awhile it corrected itself (I have no idea how or why). But that doesn't seeem to work now.
I can boot up fine off an external drive and see and use all my files. I can run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior but both give odd errors that basically the B-trees are destroyed and the system can't be booted or repaired. Disk Warrior can create a new system directory, but it can't save it to the damaged drive, so it's of no help.
Does anyone know of any other solutions rather than erasing the hard drive? I'd like to avoid that if possible.
    Thanks.
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Powerbook G4 15 inch w/ 1 gig RAM

Disk Warrior is good, if it can't repair the problem not much can be done.
if the files can be accessed when booted from external drive, you could try copying over user home folder from PowerBook to external drive, then "erase and install" OS.

  • System Crash after updating Boot Camp beta 1.3 to 1.4

After dowloading the latest BootCamp version 1.4, I double clicked on the icon and the Installation started. I have an option to upgrade the BootCamp currently installed in my system which is version 1.3. And so I clicked on the "Upgrade" button, I waited for about five minutes but then nothing happened. So clicked on the "Go Back" button and just cancelled the installation. I restarted the system and then the screen just went black and the BSD something prompt appeared. I restarted several times but the same Black screen with the BSD prompt happened. I called up support and was able to recover my system after reinstalling the entire OS. The support guy told me they already got several calls with the same system crash problem after updating the BootCamp. Just wondering what just happened?

I just bought the new Mac OS Leopard, it already comes with built-in Boot Camp.

  • Screen flashes and no boot when DVD is inserted!

I have a new (2 months old) iMac. My wife put in a SIMS3 DVD and weird things started happening after that - the screen would flash, and then eventually go black. I took it to the Apple Store; they found a bad hard drive and replaced it, unfortunately ignoring completely the things I told them about the display going wonky. They gave it back to me and when I brought it home it seemed fine. I then put in a 10.6.3 Install DVD (for the purpose of restoring my whole system off a Time Machine backup) and again - it won't boot (whether or not I'm holding C to boot off of it) and the screen is going wild - flashing on and off. I managed to pop the DVD out (holding down Eject key during boot) and then it booted fine. So: what does it mean that the thing won't boot when a DVD is in the drive? Are there heating problems of some sort perhaps? Why would both the hard drive and the video/DVD drive be bad? Am I missing something? Ideas welcome! thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Duh!!!!
Thanks Dave. I was converting some of my DVDs to .m4v files for iTunes/AppleTV and set it to Ignore. Changed it back to Open DVD Player and all is as it should be.
    Thanks again,
    Kirk

  • Black screen when battery is inserted

Hi everyone. Suddenly my 2009 white macbook goes to black screen when the battery is inserted. From startup with the battery in place [and power cord in or out] the computer starts but goes to black screen after the grey apple logo and little grey spinning thing. If i look very closely i can see the images on the screen. If i remove the battery with the power cord in, the computer behaves normally. If i put the battery back in again it goes dark again. Therefore i can only run it using the power cord. The battery is fully charged, the computer charges the battery ok and I've tried a few different batteries. Have zapped the PRAM and reset the charging thing. I'm out of ideas folks ! Thanks

OK so I have a 2008 white macbook and it will work just fine if i have the power cord plugged to it but with the batte out so with no battery placed in it now when I try to place in the battery my screen dimmes down to the lowest point it can so the screen looks black but if u look closely you can barly see the the windows on the screen

  • Pavilion p6130y: System crash (w/memory dump) when transferring files

Someone told me it's my nVIDIA card that is the problem but I wanted to post here to see what others say.
    I am running Windows 7 64-bit.
When I transfer large photos (JPEG)/video (MOV) files and large amounts of those files from a flash memory card to my portable hard drive or regular hard drive, my computer crashes (bluescreen with memory dump text), restarts, then cannot find a "solution" to the problem.
If it is a graphics card problem, what other kind should I consider getting that is compatible with my model?  Is it easy to install?  According to the nVIDIA website, I have the latest driver.  I read that nVIDIA graphics cards are junk and that ATI is better.  My p6130y is about 4-5 months old.
Is there more information that is needed to troubleshoot my problem?

    @monareaves.
My husband has this model as well, it's a computer that we've owned since August of '09, it did this in September.  2 years old, and probably 40 hours of usage on it and it just completely won't boot up.  Today it gave me a "insert boot disc, etc" but now I can't get it to do it again.  That was after I'd had it unplugged for a month.  I feel like this is a common occurance.  I will be checking the other forums.  But regardless, it's BS.

  • PowerBook G4 17" 1.67 GHz willnot boot unless battery is inserted

    I have a PowerBook G4 17" 1.67 GHz.
It will not boot unless I have a battery inserted.
It will boot just from a battery.
But it will not boot from an AC adapter unless a battery is installed.
This is a fresh OS installation so I don't believe it is software related.
If I remove the battery while booted, I can successfully restart.
But if I do a full shutdown, then I am not able to reboot.
    Anyone seen this?
    Is it normal?
    If not any explanation?
I hope it is not indicative of a logic board problem.
Otherwise there are no other issues I am aware of.
    Thanks

This could also be connected to a weak backup battery.  You might try an overnight force charge on that item by leaving the unit on AC adapter while removing the main battery.  You are getting about to the machine age where that Panasonic Li-Ion cell will be punking out.
How you can test its charge is relatively simple: have the machine on battery, booted but asleep, no AC power connected, then remove the main battery for a few seconds and then replace it.  If the machine has not powered down, then the backup is probably OK.  If it clunks off, then you should consider replacing the backup battery.  One such replacement is sold by iFixit.  Some disassembly/assembly and soldering required.

  • System crashes when i use any input field after installing Maverick

    Hello all.
I have a 2010 macbook air, and have just installed Maverick OS.
Now every time i go to any input field to type in a web address or apple id, the system crashes
and re-boots. Tried to alter keyboard properties nothing works.
I presume i will have to do a factory re-set, because i can not load any updates because I am asked
for apple ID, which i cant enter because computer crashes... Oh right i mentioned that already ;)
    Help advice welcome!
    Rgds from frustrated in Sweden!!!!

There was an issue similar to this that was resolved with DAQmx 9.3 update. If you haven't done so already, update the driver to 9.3 and try again. If not, try opening an example (like, say, Hardware I/O->DAQmx->Analog Meas->Voltage->Cont Acq&Graph Voltage-Int Clk-Analog Start.vi), and try running that standard example. If the example works and you still have difficulty with your application, could you post information about your project and what navigational steps you take to make the error occur? Try also opening the VI inside and outside of a project (this would diagnose a symptom of the issue resolved by DAQmx 9.3).

  • RMAN-07527 After System Crash

We recently had a system crash (hardware issue).  When the system came back up I noticed an error in the event log (ORA-19816) that instructed me to use CATALOG RECOVERY AREA in RMAN.  When I did this I received an RMAN-07527 error indicating that the copies of the redo logs and archivelog files that are duplexed there were not created using the DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST initialization parameter.  Can I just delete these files?  Will Oracle recreate them if necessary?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    RMAN-07527:
Reason: File was not created using DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST initialization parameter
Cause: This message should be accompanied by other message(s) indicating the name of file that was not created using DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST initialization parameter. One of the following scenarios caused this error: 1) This is an archived log file and was created when the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n initialization parameter was set explicitly to flash recovery area location. For example, LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_1="location=+FRA" where "+FRA" was also your DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST value. 2) This is an RMAN backup file and was created in a flash recovery area using the FORMAT option of the BACKUP command. 3) This is an online log file or current control file and was created prior to setting the flash recovery area. 4) This file fits none of the above scnearios and is not supported by the flash recovery area.
Action: All of following actions will resolve future occurences of this error: 1) To create archived logs in flash recovery area, set the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n initialization parameter to "location=USE_DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST". Do not explicitly set the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n initialization parameter to a flash recovery area location. 2) To create RMAN backups in flash recovery area, do not use the FORMAT option of the BACKUP command. All of following actions will resolve current problem: 1) If this is an archived log file or an RMAN backup file, use the CATALOG command to re-catalog the files. 2) If this is an online log file or a current control file to be managed by the flash recovery area, re-create the file using the DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST initialization parameter.

  • Macbook shutdown when battery in place.

My macbook pro work great when connected to the power supply and no battery inserted. When battery is inserted and power supply connected it shuts down within minutes of restart. Help.

It might be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
    Perform a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
Open System Profiler>Power and post this from your MBP:
(make certain that the charger is connected)
Try to run an Apple hardware Test:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
You can use the original installation disk that has the instructions on it.  Note that an error free AHT is not drfinitive.
I suspect that there may be something wrong with your battery.
    Ciao.

  • System crashes when put to sleep or restart

My system crashes when put to sleep or when I click re-start. This also happens when applications start and need to take over the entire screen. Once it crashes, I cannot start the computer for approx 5 minutes. I cannot re-start in safe mode because it also crashes. I cannot start with the application disc because the dvd drive pops open when I start the system. I have tried shutting the system down from the menu bar and the screen exits to the desktop window, but doesn't shut off. I have used disc utility to repair permissions and have re-set the pram, but the problem remains. I have a G4 gigabit/ethernet, running OSX 10.4.11, with an Apple Studio Display and ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card. This has been going on for a while - I am not sure if it started when I installed OSX tiger or when I added two new ram memory chips (I have four added, 2 512 SDRAMM and 2 128 SDRAMM). Please advise. Thank you.

I am not sure if it started when I installed OSX tiger or when I added two new ram memory chips (I have four added, 2 512 SDRAMM and 2 128 SDRAMM).
The absolute first step in troubleshooting is to remove the recently added RAM.
That will remove question regarding the RAM.
Have you tried a Safe Mode boot (hold Shift while booting)?
This will allow for automatic system repairs. While in safe mode, does the sleep function work?
From Safe mode, does the restart function work?
If after removing the RAM, and after Safe mode, the problem persists, a PMU reset may be worth trying.
The PMU controls all power functions, sleep and shut down and start. Corruption in the PMU will cause problems with these functions, and a reset will clear this up if the PMU is the root cause.

  • IMovie has frozen up on me. I've tried rebooting and reinstalling the apps- no help. I can play some of the files- but I can't get into the libraries.Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a few minutes. What can I do?

I desperately need your help. I was working on iMovie last night when the thing froze up on me. I've tried rebooting. I've tried reinstalling the apps. No change. I can play some of the files- although I can't tell which ones will play until they magically appear. I can't get into the project library or the event library. The bar that lets me scroll through the clips is gone. Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a couple of minutes and generates a "problem report" that says "iMovie Quit Unexpectedly". This all started when I was adding cutaways- and one clip just would not load. After I tried several times everything froze up. Have you ever heard of something like this? Maybe I pushed a button or somehow changed a setting? Maybe some of the video is corrupt? What do you recommend?
Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I have tried all the above and nothing seems to work. Any other suggestions?

  • Yosemite System Crashes on Boot with Dell U2713HM

Previously under Mavericks I had no issue with a Dell U2713HM monitor and my 'non-stock' NVidia card.  (The reason I'm using the video card I am is because the stock ATI card (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT) is known do fry itself which I discovered after replacing it with an identical card and having the 2nd one fry itself after a year.  I did a lot of research and settle don the card I now have because others had reported success with it.  It worked fine for nearly a year until updating to Yosemite.)
After upgrading to Yosemite my system went into an infinite reboot loop on startup.  On a hunch, I swapped out my U2713HM for an old 17" monitor and was able to boot.  I can't even have the U2713HM plugged in/turned off using the second port on the card without the system crashing.  If I get the system booted using the 17", I can then plug in/turn on the U2713HM and set the resolution - at that point I can (sometimes) boot but it will then crash on shutdown triggering an automatic restart.
Is anyone having any success with a U2713HM, and especially with an NVidia card?  The only option I haven't tried is a completely fresh, clean install.  Once the system boots, I get the dialog that it was restarted because of an issue and can view part of the dump info that will be sent to Apple -> that clearly indicates the issue is with the kernel/NVidia driver somewhere.
System specs:  Mac Pro (Early 2008) with an NVidia GeForce GTX 650 1024MB card installed running Yosemite (OS X 10.10)

My mac mini (late 2012, Yosemite installed) doesn't start with Dell U2713HM if the USB cable of the monitor is connected.
No problems if I connect the usb-cable after successful startup. Also the usb-hub of the Dell is working fine then.
