I recently purchased a Compaq Presario V5000 online. It came with a copy of Windows 7 that was not genuine. I then installed my own copy of XP. I can't seem to find any drivers for this laptop anywhere. Please help.

There are 22 models in the V5000 series. You should have a Service Tag attached to bottom with full model number.

System Recovery Problem - Compaq Presario F767NR model

I've just installed a brand-new hard drive in my laptop, which I got in the mail today from HP. However, when I press the F11 button to start system recovery, nothing happens. It takes me nowhere. The screen is black, except for an "Operating System Not Found" message.
I've put in the first disk of my two-part recovery disk process in the DVD drive. Nothing comes up saying that the recovery process has even started. My DVD drive was working fine before my laptop crashed, so why isn't my system recovery doing anything?! I checked the "troubleshooting" section of the HP website, but there was no Q&A part for what is happening to me. Help! Thank you.

The message means that your internal hard has been damaged. This message always comes up when the file system is corrupted. I suggest to remove it, connect the hard drive into a different computer as an external drive (use usb caddy), perform a backup if possible and the format the hard drive and restore the factory settings. I'm afraid that you have to reformat the hard drive, a checkdisk scan won't help..
The error message means that the Boot Sector is corrupt or has been damaged. It does not mean that the hard disk is damaged.
This is a fixable issue. There are a few command line tools that can be used.
You will need to make an appropriate version (32-bit / 64-bit) of the Windows 7 repair disc from a working Windows 7 installation. You will need either a USB or CD to create your rapair CD/USB. Follow the instructions on this video to create the repair installation of your choice..You will will be using the manual boot sector repair that is described in this video to repair your Windows 7 Boot sector. Use the Windows 7 repair disc or repair USB thumb drive that you created earlier to accomplish the repair.

Compaq Presario V5000 sounds and video on line and at windows start up, also having issue with SM Bu

Sound skips ald there is a skip on video but not as prevalent I also have a yellow Question mark under my device manager for a SM Bus device that shows up every time I start the computer under found New Hardware then it goes to the install wizard that cannot locate the device. Did you follow through both documents from start to finish? If you have and it does not resolve the issue, you can consider a factory restore. If that fails you may have hardware failure.

Presario v5000 and SSD?

What is the best SSD that I can put in my Compaq Presario V5000?

When windows cannot copy files to the hard disk it's one of three things, your hard drive, the memory modules or the Windows Setup Disk. What I personally would do is try another copy of Windows even if you make a verbatim copy of the Windows disk itself it's still ok to use because you have the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) on the underside of the laptop. Failing that, download yourself Memtest86+ and run at least 5 passes on your memory to verify if your memory is faulty or not. By the way to make sure that it doesn't shut off during the test take the hard drive out, Of course being very careful not to damage anything. One other thing is the shutting off always the same time ? or is it random ?

Presario v5000 802.11n

I recently acquired an HP Compaq Presario V5000 CTO that has no wireless adapter installed. I know that when this notebook was manufactured the only mini-PCI wireless adapters made for it were 802.11a/b/g, and I see that these are readily available from many sources. However, I'm wondering if a mini-PCI 802.11b/g/n adapter would function properly in this notebook.
Also, I'd like to know if the antenna is factory installed in all of these or if it would have no antenna if it was originally configured without wireless capability.

You have to find and install one of the wireless cards supplied as original equipment on the laptop. HP implements a BIOS block for non-supported wireless cards. You need to go on eBay or otherwise and find a wireless card with an HP part number from that era. As far as the antenna, it has been a long time since laptops did not have wireless antennae. The V5000 is new enough that I am sure the factory installed antennae in every one. To be sure just open the memory bay (the middle bay on the bottom) and look for antenna leads. So in a nutshell, sorry no "n" wireless is possible. If there are antennae there will only be two anyway and you need three for "n" wireless in most cases.

Compaq Presario CQ57 Laptop System Bios recovery problem

A customer of mine has a Compaq Presario CQ57 that has developed a BIOS problem.
I am unsure if it had had a BIOS update through HP Support Assistant or if it just decided to start for no reason but it now intermittently decides to recover the System BIOS at start up.
It is all very random. It may not do it for a while - working fine every time it is switched on - but then just decides to go into this recovery. Sometimes the recovery sorts it first time, sometimes it has to go through the recovery mode several times before it sorts it out. Once sorted, Windows and the laptop work fine.
I have tried to remedy it by installing BIOS updates. There are 4 available on the HP website. I have installed all four at various points - sometimes they install, sometimes they fail. Sometimes the recovery mode kicks in straight after - usually after a fail which makes sense. Other times it will work OK for many start ups and then just go back to it's old tricks.
Any suggestions would be very helpful.

I understand your Compaq Presario CQ57-212NR gives you an error after running the system recovery.
Can you tell me if this error loads within Windows or if it prevents you from starting up.
I would suggest you acquire an ISO image of Windows 7 and burn it to a DVD. Use this to install Windows and then run the recovery after. This should remedy the problem.

When I've turned it on, it comes up with the bios screen message "Enter Administrator or Power on Password".
