System discs recovery and fully clean out a Lion install?

I just got an iMac, i7 - 27" 2.93GHz (used) - this box originally ships with Snow OS and Applications Install discs.  (but problems with the Apps disc and no Lion install included)
The seller had upgraded to Lion on it and wiped a lot of stuff clean but - didn't do a clean install so there's some residual stuff (keychain and other) I would like to wipe out.  (It ships with Snow and I have no Lion install currently).
1. Is there a way to fully uninstall *everything* from a past Lion user - including their Home -
a) without completely reformatting the drive
b) also - without a Lion installer of any kind - but wanting to keep the existing Lion OS in place
The box arrived and the System Discs were loose with the keyboard and trackpad flying around in the box causing damage to the Applications Install Disc.  Both Disk Utility and Toast11 fail to make backups or Image files due to read errors - (backups are the first thing I always do with System Discs).
2.  I have the Applications Install Disc from my 2010 MacBook Pro - will it work in place of the iMac's?  None with my 2011 Mini :-( and I sold the '09 Mini.
3.  Does Apple have any kind of replacement disc policy/program short of buying them all over again?  ($$$expensive?)
a)  This iMac has Applecare through most all of 2013 - would it help for replacement discs?
Thanks!

First off, copying the original discs is prohibited unless you own the correct discs and use the restore directions on http://www.macmaps.com/bootcd.html
I do not know if those directions work with the Snow Leopard installer.
However, once installed you can make a clone*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
If the discs don't boot with an Option key boot, he sent you the wrong discs.
Apple will replace the original discs typically at about $20 per disc.
Macs that shipped with Lion originally don't have 10.6 compatibility except a few listed at the bottom of:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
If they aren't compatible with those discs, if Lion was installed, there is a way to restore Lion from the installed Lion restore partition, as mentioned on my backup page above.   Macs that can't install Snow Leopard, but can install Lion do not ship with any discs, as the restore partition is already there.

  • Clean install of OSX while keeping settings and still cleaning out old junk

I there a way to do a clean install of Snow Leopard without having to completely reconfigure all my preferences, settings, and applications, but still clean out all the unnecessary and old unneeded junk that's hidden all over the computer?

Nope. The Mac OS X System and Library folder doesn't contain your unneeded and unnecessary junk all over your computer. Your Home folder and Library folder contained within, contain that junk you must be referring to. If you want to do some "Spring Cleaning", back up your data, reformat, and install fresh. Then you can install what you want, without your unneeded and unnecessary junk. Or, go through your Home/Library folder and delete the files for programs you no longer have installed. You can also go through your Applications and Utilities folder and delete programs you no longer use.

Are these purchases not in your iTunes library?  Content such as music, movies, apps, etc. are not included in the backup of your iPod.  These all need to be transferred to your iTunes library seperately by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases with your iPod Touch still connected.

  • My Macpro Intel Core Duo-running OS 10.6.8 has been crashing pretty much with everything I try to open.  I find the last resort will be to boot from Snow Leopard system disc. Has anyone experienced  this? I can only run Google Chrome.

In the last few days, it seems that my computer has all of a sudden caught a virus.  I have never had that happened to a computer, but I have surely heard about it.  I can't think of any other reason it is behaving like this.  I know that Macs have been pretty much impervious to viruses, but that was before they were the majority of users.
Anyway, what is happening is, my computer keeps crashing whenever I try to open a program, app, document, folder, file, etc.  I tried to boot from Drive Genius to establish the problem, but Drive Genius crashed too.  I know the last ditch effort (after cleaning and maintenance of disc verification and permissions and repairs, is to reboot from the system disc.
Before I go there I was hoping someone in the community would have a suggestion to help me avoid that ultimate last resort.  The tech support guy at Drive Genius told me that probably would have to be the way to go (as in reboot) and if that doesn't clear it up, it's repair time.
    Thank you for your consideration in advance;
    Lorain R

In the last few days, it seems that my computer has all of a sudden caught a virus.
As others have pointed out, this isn't malware. That should not be your first (or even fifty-first) thought when your Mac starts misbehaving. For more on this topic, see my Mac Malware Guide.
I know the last ditch effort (after cleaning and maintenance of disc verification and permissions and repairs, is to reboot from the system disc.
You mention "cleaning and maintenance." Have you been running utilities claiming to do those things? If so, you may be the victim of an overly-zealous cleaning job, which has removed important files and damaged your system.
If I'm understanding correctly, you're unable to open any applications at all... is that right? Do you have any backups? If you don't have backups, you're in a sticky situation, as it will be difficult to make backups in your current state, but you shouldn't try any kind of repairs without them. (Actually, you shouldn't do anything with your computer without backups, but this is especially important when something is going badly wrong.)
If you have backups, reboot from your Snow Leopard install disc. From there, first, repair the hard drive with Disk Utility. Once that is done, assuming repairs were successful, reinstall the system. You can simply reinstall it on top of your current system, and it will replace any damaged or lost system files with new copies. (You'll also need to update the system via Software Update after reinstalling.)
If you don't have backups, or if Disk Utility can't repair damage, or if the problem continues even after a reinstall, post back with those details.

  • Best way to clean out a hard drive.

I have a A505 S605 Satelite laptop with a hard drive full of junk. I would  like to start over by cleaning out the hard drive completely. After the hard drive is cleaned out, I will install everything using the recovery disks that I got from the Geek Squad when I bought the computer.
What is the best way to get the hard drive wiped out? Thank you for your help.

Just back up the data you need to keep onto a usb thumb drive or usb external hard drive then run the Recovery Disk to restore the system to it's factory out of box state.   IT will wipe the drive as part of the process leaving your system exactly as it came to from the factory.  You don't need to delete anything first.

  • Setup OneKey recovery after clean Windows 8.1 install

    Hello,
I have Lenovo Z50-70 notebook. I bought a 32GB SSD to speed it up and installed it instead of optical drive as drive for system. I performed a clean Windows 8.1 install. Now I started looking for a way how to setup a one key recovery again. I found on some forums that you have to make some steps before installation itself or that you need some files which were preinstalled. I cannot reinstall system now and i have no backups of preinstalled tools. Is there any way to  set up one key recovery so the one key recovery button would work again and I would have a partition on my second drive (HDD) to backup my system (SSD) ? Is there a way to set it up so manually?
    Thanks

You might be the second person that aim to do it with Cyberlink, the maker of the program, being the first. Good luck.

  • System Image Recovery from Network Drive - not found

    Hello all!
I have been routinely backuping my OS and important files using Windows 7 backup on a NAS. It just so happened that I needed to re-image my OS drive and I got into the Windows 8 recovery boot sequence.
I booted from a windows 8 USB stick and Under the Advanced tools I selected the System Image Recovery and tried to look for the system image on the network path. Although the prompt said it was connecting to the network , the network share was
not found. the command prompt couldn't ping google.com and netsh wlan <SSID> command did not work in hopes of connecting to my local wifi.
Is there a way to connect to the wifi network where my NAS is connected to in order to re-image from the system image found on the NAS? Luckily , there was an older image on a separate local HDD that I could re-image from but I would prefer if
I could connect to the NAS during the recovery process.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
First, I have to say that in WinRE, http and wifi is not supported, that's why you cannot ping google and connect to wifi.
To access NAS, we have to make sure that your network connection is wired, and try to manually location the NAS via
    \\IP address\...
I will check if the Windows 7 image backup can be restored in WinRE of Windows 8, and update your soon.
    Edit:
I have tried this, and it appeared that to restore Windows 7 image backup on this computer from Windows 8 winRE is not supported.

  • Clean out start up disc I Mac g5

How can I clean out the start up disk. I do not have enough space to import video into I movie on my G5.

If your hard drive is getting full,
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • S12 Nano Product Recovery Discs (XP) and Warranty Upgrade (US)

I ordered an S12 system on the basis of its weight, marginally acceptable keyboard, and a 16:10 screen, more specifically, 800 pixels height, and XP.   Out of the box, all looks good other than some quirky behavior of the numlock setting and the cheap "Veriface" software blocking the normal XP logon box.  It isn't the fastest box in town, but compared to the other netbook options 95% of which force Windows 7 starter when coupled with the larger screen, it can't be beat.
But I've hit a dead end, trying to order a product recovery disc set - they exist for the S10 series, but seemingly not for the S12.  Is there a secret place to order them?
We're expecting this unit to survive through the remaining 3.3 years of high school.
But Lenovo doesn't seem to offer any extended warranty in the US.  Are they telling me I'm SOL after a year?

  • Very Confused over Reinstall Discs, Recovery Discs and how do I CREATE THEM!

I am the owner of a Lenova IdeaCenter K300 Computer with Windows 7 64Bit OS
The system has been running for just about a year now...no issues, very stable...however after a recent issue with another computer MFG system...I have questions:
First the Other MFG system - The computer was purchased in April of 2008 with Windows Vista, the computer was unplugged on November 1, 2008 and stored in a cool Dry place....In October of 2011 My Godson wanted a new computer and I told him I have a computer that was lightly used and would do what he wanted it to do.
I plugged in a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and turned on the unit when MUCH to my surprise the HD had failed...BADLY...so I went to a local store, purchased a new HD and installed it on the machine.
First let me explain that this computer MFG after several calls to them looking for help.. explained to me the following
1: Reinstall Discs were NOT avail
2: The System did not support creating Recovery discs since all the information that the system needed was stored on
the Hard Drive that was supplied with the system...and that the OEM Windows VISTA version was available to use for
        3 years
I said Okay, but I have a computer that had a HD failure so how do I go about reinstalling Windows Vista to get the computer up and running again?  They told me that I had to PURCHASE from a store a copy of Windows Vista.   I said that I had from two other computers from another MFG Windows Vista Reinstall Discs, can I use those, and use the Product Key code supplied by YOUR company to reintsall the OS?  They said NO...you need the orginal Hard Drive....I was like WHAT!
Needless to say you can imagine my EXTREME frustration over not being able to get the computer up and running again.  After several calls to the Presidents Office I was finally....after 6 weeks of battle able for a cost mind you of $19.99 to get physical DVD's to reintall Windows Vista onto the system - (they should arrive this week)
So now I am sitting in front of this LENOVA computer wondering ...Worse CaseScenerio...HD FAILURE...and lets face it it DOES HAPPEN.
    so here are my questions
1: What is the difference between Recovery Disc and Reinstall Dics?
2: If this Lenova System can only Create Recovery Discs ...and the HD needs to be replaced will the Recovery discs reintsall Windows 7 on this system?
3: How do I create these discs...I found an option on Lenova Rescue System to create Recovery Discs but it was 24  4.5 GB DVD's to do this?  Windows Vista only needed 2
Am I missing something here can some one Please help me
    thank you!

They should sell you recovery disc without any problems. If you call customer service and you feel that the conversation is going no ware you probably talking to wrong person. Disconnect and tray another time, you will never speak to the same person twice
OEM reinstall disc doesn’t need activation, retail windows disc needs but you have serial number on the sticker so just call Microsoft and activate it.
Recovery disc is a copy of your computer hard drive with windows, drivers, software included
Reinstall disc is the same for all computers with windows only, you have to install drivers and software separately
Reinstall OEM disc is only for Lenovo system but it is the same like retail windows disc with added pre-activation
