System Disk Name Change - Restore Old Files?

The name of a friend's main system disk was accidentally changed some time ago. The backup sets from both the old name and new name are still in TM under the same computer name. When we look at the backup sets they appears as (the leading dots are just to show the folder hierarchy since consecutive spaces are deleted):
Backup.backupsdb
..computer_name
....2009-01-01-timecode
......Macintosh\ HD
....2009-06-01-timecode
......New\ Disk\ Name
When we go in to TM to restore, we can see the backup sets that match the current disk name but not the ones with the old disk name.
How can we go about restoring files that existed when the disk had the old name? Selecting "Browse Other TM Disks" does not show the backup sets with the old disk name.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Ed

OK, here is the whole story as I understand it (this is a friend's iMac).
The drive was originally named "Machintosh HD". There are backup sets going back to August, 2008 where the only folder under the date folder in Backups.backupdb is named "Machintosh HD".
In late August, 2008, the internal drive was renamed " `1| ". The only folder in the date folders in Backups.backupdb is named " `1| ".
Two weeks ago we installed a new, larger internal HD. At that time, we discovered the problem with the drive name and renamed it "Machintosh HD". We are now able to restore from any backup where the folder in the date folders in Backups.backupdb is named "Machintosh HD".
For the time period from late August, 2008 - August, 2009 TM greys out the dates for the backup sets. It will not allow us to restore from them.
Prior to renaming the " `1| " drive, we could restore from any backup set between late August, 2008 - August 2009. We were not able to restore from the backup sets prior to August, 2008 where the name was "Machintosh HD".
It appears that TM wants to see a directory that matches the internal drive name in order to allow a restore from it.
I'm sorry for the confusion on the names. I have been using Unix systems for years and automatically include a \ when I type a file or directory name that includes a space.

  • Harddrive (start up disk) name changed

Why would the harddrive (start up disk) name change (on desktop) to an unrecognizable number/letter combination? Is it a virus?

Extremely unlikely that you have any sort of malware causing this. (Malware affecting Macs does exist, but no known viruses do, & the rare, existing malware tries to be stealthy to avoid detection.)
More likely: you accidentally changed the startup disk name somehow. Try changing it back & see what happens.

  • Having trouble restoring old files from an external Time Machine back-up to a new internal hard drive...HELP!

O.k. So my main hard drive died on my iMac and I had to replace it. I have my old system backed up on my external with Time Machine. How do I access it to get my old files back on my new hard drive? I have read multiple forums and I have yet to find a solution. I was told that when I first turn the computer on and get to the third screen, it would ask me if I wanted to restore from a previous back-up. It did but it didn't show my external until I went through the set-up and got to my home screen. The drive showed then. It also asked to install updates...and I did. So everything is up to date. I have not turned time machine on yet because I'm affraid that if I do, it will erase my old back-up on my external. I tried using the Migration Assistant in Utilities and all I get is the spinning wheel when I tried to get that to work. So now I am here asking for help. I'm not very hopeful that I'm going to be able to get all of my old files back...  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the video link. I did it pretty much exactly the way the young man explained. The one thing I didn't do was click "customize" as he does and unclick the multiple language support and he also clicks "rosetta" to support older programs. I wonder if that's the issue? The guys at Macmall told me that I would need to update the o.s. before I restored. I did that originally but have since (as mentioned before) erased the main drive. I noticed that when he does his install, his external drive does not show up on the list in which you want to install the o.s. on... should I unplug my external? I'm just trying to look at ever detail. I know the recovery file is there. The one thing it (the external) did say before I started posting here was "in progress". I'm not sure what that means? I promise I'm not an idiot. I consider myself an above average user. I usually help other that have issues... but I've yet to restore from a Time Machine back-up and I'm looking forward to learning how to do it.... the right way. I appreciate all of the advice. I have some pretty important files on my external back-up. I am really hoping that this is possible. I'm beginning to think the external is where the issue lies. The "in progress" next to the file name concerns me. I know there's a lot of data on the drive because it's nearly half full. So there's stuff there....

  • Source System Logical Name change

    Hello,
We are refreshing our R3Qas system with a copy of our R3Prd system.  As part of this task our R3Qas logical name is changing from QASC230 to QASC200.
I am at the point in the refresh where I am beginning tasks on the existing BWQas system.
I Right Click on the source system representing the R3Qas system "QAS client 230" technical name: QASC230.  I choose 'Restore'  I then provide the logon information but the system it jumps to is the Old R3Qas not the new R3Qas.
I know that it is jumping based on the RFC, So I assume I can change that RFC to jump to the new system, what do you think?  Also what about the Source System name an technical name, will it always be QAS Client 230 and QASC230 or can that be changed to reflect the new name of QASC200?
Thanks for your advice and assistance!
    Nick

Since the BWQ system was already an existing system that was attached to the previous R3Q system, this task was essentially busy work.
The change that occured was that the existing R3Q system (Physical Name: QAS01 Logical Name: R3QASC230) was being replaced with a new R3Q system (A copy of Production was used) (Physical Name: QAS02 Logical Name: R3QASC200).
The actions that I needed to take to connect BWQ to the new R3Q follow:
    1. On QAS02 visit TX SE37. and run RSAP_BIW_DISCONNECT, Choose 'Single Test'.  For I_BIW_LOGSYS: I provided BWP001 which corresponds to the logical name of our Production BW system. For I_OLTP_LOGSYS: I provided R3PRDC200 which corresponds to the logical name of the QAS02 system (this system).  I then Click 'Execute' and 10 seconds later this step is done.
    2. On QAS02 visit TX: BDLS.  For the 'Old Logical System Name' provide BWP001.  For the 'New Logical System Name' provide BWQ001.  Ensure the 1st radio button is selected, and deselect all checkboxes.  From the Program menu choose to 'Execute' in background (it took about 45 minutes). Confirm the 'Mapping System Name'.
    3. Again on QAS02 visit TX: BDLS.  For the 'Old Logical System Name' provide R3PRDC200.  For the 'New Logical System Name' provide R3QASC200.  Ensure the 1st radio button is selected, and deselect all checkboxes.  From the Program menu choose to 'Execute' in background (BASIS already did this step so a message appeared to that effect)
    4. On the BWQ box visit TX: BDLS.  For the 'Old Logical System Name' provide R3QASC230.  For the 'New Logical System Name' provide R3QASC200.  Ensure the 1st radio button is selected, and deselect all checkboxes.  From the Program menu choose to 'Execute' in background (it took about 45 minutes). Confirm the at the prompt and run.
    5. On BWQ create new RFC's based on the old ones to point at the new QAS02 system.  Modify the old ones with an X in the 'Target Host' so they do not function.
    6. Open up the BWQ client in SCC4.  (or perhaps try SM30 to modify the table in the next step)
    7. On BWQ visit TX: SE16.  Tablename: RSLOGSYSDEST.  Change the 'Old' reference to the QAS box to the 'New' information.  (ie: R3QASC230 became R3QASC200).
    8. On BWQ visit TX: WE20.  Expand 'Partner Type LS', Select 'R3QASC200', click the classification tabe, change the 'Partn.Status' from I to 'A' and save.
    9. On BWQ right click on the R3 Source system and choose 'Restore' Provide the passwords that are required.  When prompted to logon to the remote system use an ADMIN (BASIS) level Account.  Click 'Continue' when you get the 'User exists...' prompt.  Click 'Only Activate' when prompted.  you will then get a termination message regarding the port description.
    10. On BWQ Back at WE20: Expand 'Partner Type LS', Select R3QASC200, double click on RSRQST.  Under 'Outbound Options' click the drop down for 'Reciever port'  Select the 'new' correct system and 'Save'.
    11. On BWQ right click on the R3 Source system and choose 'Restore' Provide the passwords that are required.  When prompted to logon to the remote system use an ADMIN (BASIS) level Account.  Click 'Continue' when you get the 'User exists...' prompt.  You will get a prompt to Use or Check, choose 'Use'.  When prompted about 'Connection cannot be used' click 'Delete'. Logon again as ADMIN account, Click 'Continue' when you get the 'User exists...' prompt. Click 'Replicate as well' when prompted.  you will then get a termination message regarding the port description.
You should be all set now!

  • NAS disk name changed - HELP!

I use a NAS for backups and external storage.  At some time in the past week, my backup operations stopped working, and I think I have tracked down the source of the problem.  Somehow, an "extension" got added to the disk name (I did not do this and I am not sure how it happened).  The disk name (Cosmos) has not changed, but when right click and choose "get info", in the "Name and Extension" section, the disk shows up as Cosmos-1.  Unfortunately, the name is greyed out and I can't change it.  Does anybody know how I can remove the -1 extension and change the name back to Cosmos so that my backups see the disk again?  HELP!

Open up Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    Type in
    cd /Volumes/
    ("Change Directory to /Volumes/")
    and then
    ls -a
(list all the files in this directory)
and you will probably see Cosmos and Cosmos-1, among others. Eject the Cosmos volume if you haven't already, then go back to Terminal. Type in
    rm Cosmos
    ("remove the file called Cosmos")
Now mount the drive again and it should be able to take the name "Cosmos" without adding the '-1' suffix.
These phantom volumes can sometimes appear when a command tries to copy files to a volume without actually mounting it first. It is likely that wahtever you are using to make backups isn't properly waiting for the drive to mount before it tries to do a backup.

  • After system restore, old files taking up too much space on TM drive...

Time Machine just saved my *** this AM, some sort of a system error while I was repairing permissions, I used the System Restore on TM, and when it all came back, my TM drive is too full to continue using.
Is is safe to re-format the drive and start fresh?

This is because TM does a new full backup after a full restore.
Seems a bit weird, but you did replace everything on your disk, even though it was actually all the same stuff.
And yes, erase the TM drive/partition with Disk Utility (do NOT delete via the Finder), and start fresh.

  • Installing a new harddrive and using time machine to restore old files

I want to replace the old 250 gig harddrive on my Macbook pro with a new 750 gig one I just purchased. I have made backups with time machine and have heard that after you install Snow leopard on the new drive you can just create your old computer with all the files back in place with the time machine backup you made from the previous drive. Im sure plenty of you have done this I am just wondering how it went and some tips of how to not mess this up. One question I have is do I need to do all the Snow Leopard updates for the system (I think my disc is 10.6.4) , or iTunes, quicktime etc, or will that all be resolved with the time machine restore. Same goes with iLife, should I install iLife first or will that come over with the time machine restore. I think im thinking into this too much but just not sure how this all works. Thanks for your help!

    Prepare your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. You will have an option appear to restore from a TM backup. You can select that option or you can complete the installation of OS X. Upon completion of the Setup Assistant you can opt to restore from an external drive or a TM backup.
Be sure your TM backup drive is connected and powered up. If all else fails you can always finish the installation and the reboot, then restore from your TM backup using Migration Assistant.

  • Server name changed but old server name reflecting

    Hi Experts,
Issue is In the SQL server name is changed.
When the user is logging on SAP old server name is appearing and in SAP 8.8 there is no option of change like in SAP 2005B and 2007B  so no database is appearing on screen.
What should be done in such condition.
    Thanks & Regards -
    Mona.

In 8.8 you need to add and maintain servers through the license manager of the server tools. Open license manager settings and click the button on the bottom left (Configure Security). Enter your B1 site users details and then in the next screen you can define an additional server as well as remove the old one; I had the exact same issue a few days ago!

  • Restoring old files to bb z10

Is there a way to get my latest back up file onto my z10 if my bb id is different from when i backed it up to when i restored it to factory settings? if anybody can help i would deeply appreciate it. i am mostly concerned with restoring my documents.

    Reference http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-World/How-to-regain-access-to-your-BBID/m-p/254671...
See the paragraph concerning deleting a BBID using information in the original email you received when you created the BBID. If you followed those directions, then according to the post, you should be able to create a new ID with the same username and email address and everything would transfer to the new ID. I don't know if that would then allow you to restore the old backup if you signed in with the new ID created with the old credentials.  Maybe.  However, if you simply deleted the ID, then for certain you are out of luck.
If you just deleted the ID then it is gone, doesn't exist anymore. If you created a new ID with the same username and password it will effectively be a different ID.

  • Why did my startup disk name change after Lion installaion?

I recently upgraded my 2008 MacBook Pro to Lion. I noticed later that my hard drive (startup) name was changed to "240ik=-`o9". Has anyone else seen this before? Any idea what caused it? Do I need to be concerned? Thanks.

    goldbear,
I can't figure out how to rename the drive. You have any idea how? Thanks.
Just click on the HD icon and depres the "return" key. Then type Macintosh HD.
One way to prevent that from happening again, is to go to the Finder>Preferences...>General menu and deselect the "Hard disks" option.

  • Why is the tab name showing the old file type when I try to download a pdf from our wordpress sites?

We have two wordpress sites. On each site we have uploaded some pdf files that viewers can download. I noticed that when you try to download a pdf file the tab name that appears when you click "Download" is not the same as the filename. For instance: when I try to download a pdf file titled "Weekly Retail Skeptic". In firefox - the tab name will say "Microsoft Word - Note_2013_0523_Skeptic - Note_0523_Skeptic.pdf". It seems like the browser is reading what the file was before it was converted to a pdf.
I have tried both "print to pdf" in word as well as converting the word document to a pdf document using Acrobat.

  • Restoring OLD files from stolen laptop

    Hey,
I just got access to an old external hd, which contains a time machine backup I had of my laptop which got stolen. It has photos backed up from my iPhoto library I really want to get back.
The only details I can see online are for using time machine backups to install or set up your laptop, but I have been using mine for about 5 months now, and have new data I also want to preserve. Any advice on ripping photos from an old iPhoto library on time machine, and adding to the new one?

  • Imported source file name changed for the external table

    Hi,
I have external table from flat file. Now the source file name is changed. I can change the file location to point to the new file name, but I can't update the source for the flat file property(as seen under flat file properties, structure tab. the column "Sampled From"). Is there way to have this update without having to import the file using the new file name again?

In the Files section in the object navigator find the flat file you want to change the source of.
Double click on the actual file, and on the General tab change the old file name to the new one.
The fact that it has been sampled from a different file should not 'disturb' the working of the external table.
However, if the structure of the new file is different I'd suggest to resample.
    Good luck, Patrick
