System.exit() causes Firefox to close

Hi.
I have a strange problem - I have an app which can be both an applet and a standalone application. At some point is calls System.exit() and it can happen in an applet too. (It's easy to redesign the code but that;s not my question)
Strange enough (for me at least) the call causes the whole browser to close! (Observed in FF 1.5.x and 2.0, reported in IE7). Is this supposed to happen?

No, this isn�t a bug. You should not call System.exit from an applet, instead use the life cycle methods of the Applet class.

If you are using AVG...disable the link scanner from the main page...this will stop the errors. It isn't a problem with internet explorer from what I can see but just with firefox. I was having the problem forever it seems until I did this. AVG must be clashing with firefox with this option enabled. It basically sees most web pages as malicious when they really aren't. I couldn't get into Yahoo or a lot of other sites because of this error.

System.exit(0)   will not close the program

uh, for some reason when the conditions inside the processInputString are met, the program fails to shutdown. The msg to console is posted and program hangs when it should close.

Probably because it's blocked reading the process output and this might be an operation that can't be interrupted.

What causes Firefox to close down my computer and restarts it?It had done this several times today.

When I am on the computer or even when I am not.The computer will shut down and restart.I installed Firefox 2 days ago.

The one thing that is locking up fire fox is the plug ins. You have to check to see if a plug in is locking up firefox first of all.
To see the processes press : CTRL+ALT+DEL. then click the tab marked "Processes" Then look for Fire Fox and click on it. Click the Yes button when the warning box show up.
Then do the say for "Plug-in Container" I believe that is called.
this is because all ads are now flash ads or video ads. They lock my computer up all the time.
When the CTRL+ALT+DEL are pressed. Keep this minimized and you can see if your computer is running at 100% memory near the clock. If the box is totally green, you are running a lot of programs on your system. Check the processes and find out what is not needed. Also watch your virtual memory. Rule of thumb is 1.5x total memory.
Then now it would be able to shut down the computer the right way.

I am running windows 8, and have Avast! for antivirus. I am running FF ver26, and is up to date. This problem just started about 2 weeks ago.

Closing a JFrame without using System.exit(0)

Hello all,
I'm writting an application at the moment that uses a JFrame as an "about box" invoked when a menu item from another JFrame is selected . The about box is set to undecorated, and I have set up an Thread to handle an animation of the credits that move up slowly. I have also added into it code to play a sound file while the credits are running.
I wanted to have it so that the user can just click once anywhere on the Panel area of the about box, and that would close the about box window and stop the sound.
I can get it to stop the sound on click no problem, what I'm having issues with is closing just the about box Frame. I've used System.exit(0) but this closes the original application, which I dont want it to do. I've been looking at online example code and I've found that dispose() might work... Problem is my JFrame for the about box is initiated in the main applications JFrame under an eventListener for the menuItem 'about'. The sound file is played inside the JPanel of the about box. And the listener to close it is located in the same place ( about box JPanel ).. does anyone know how to get this frame ( initiated in main applications JFrame ) and dispose of this frame through code located in the JPanel of the about box.
I hope this is descriptive enough for you.

It seems you are asking how to find the parent frame of a Component that you know is within a frame?
You can getParent() of the component. If it is a frame (instanceof) - dispose, else check for the getParent()...
If you don't want to code it yourself use SwingUtilities.getWindowAncestor(Component) to get the Window in which the panel is.

System.exit(0) closes wrong window

I use a web browser to display an applet.
In the applet I have the possibility to start a new webbrowser window with myapplet.getAppletContext().showDocument(url, "_blank");In the new webpage I also start a new applet.
To close this new web page I call System.exit(0); from the applet in the new page.
The strang thing that happens than is that the parent window is closed and the newly opened web page is still active.
If I open these windows myself in the browser, I can close them from the applet.
Can anybody help.

System.exit is not permitted by an applet for the above mentioned reason.
Multiple browser windows with applets share the same jvm so exiting the
jvm makes the other applets crash.
When you give the applet permission (sign or policy) system.exit will crash
the browser.
It is possible to close a popup window, since I don't beleve in the JSObject
anymore (crashed too many times with too many bugs in mozilla).

Email links when clicked causes Firefox to open many multiple tabs, unable to close any of them, in other words, crashes. Anyone else having this problem?

I cannot click on any email links on any pages. It causes Firefox to open many, many multiple tabs, which I cannot close. My only recourse is to quit Firefox and relaunch. It happens most of the time, so that in order to click an email link I must open another browser altogether.

You can look at the network.protocol-handler.external.mailto prefs on the about:config page. 
If network.protocol-handler.external.mailto prefs are user set (bold) then right-click and Reset them to the default value. 
You can open about: pages via the location bar like you open a website.
Did you try to delete the file mimeTypes.rdf in the Firefox Profile Folder?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

Firefox will close when i close the window but the process doesn't shutdown ever since i had updated to FF25

I am running Win. 8.1 and had no issues with FF 24. Since upgrading to FF 25, firefox will appear closed when i close the window but the process doesn't shutdown. I have to go into Task Manager to end the process. I can then launch it again.

Hi all. I had this problem as well. I currently run FF26. A week or so ago, out of nowhere FF wouldn't exit - the window would close but firefox.exe process would keep running in the background using about 50% of CPU. Not sure if it's connected, but just prior to that I clicked on a link on Facebook that looked like spam website, nothing happened, site loaded (sort of, all I saw was a msg - Please Wait...) but nothing happened, I have Eset antivirus and it monitors network traffic and files for viruses, so maybe it prevented my PC getting infected...
So, I had this problem for a few days, was searching the net for solutions, but nothing seem to help. Then, just out of luck I did something that WORKED!
Here's what I did. I noticed that svchost.exe was using a lot of CPU alongside with FF. I ran ProcessExplorer to see what might be connected to this process, the list was long and I didn't have any idea where to start, so what I did was - Right click on svchost process, choose Debug and dismiss the warning. In a few seconds svchost process quit and after that FF started closing properly.
I had to re-enable all my plugins and themes I disabled prior, I also lost my history and preferences which I trashed in the process of searching for solution. But heck, it worked, hopefully for good. Now if someone could point out the real cause of this and fix it for everyone - that would be great. Cheers!

System.exit() didn't kill all the threads it spawned in Linux

Facing problem while doing System.exit(0);
Even though it is happening inconsistently but this how it is-------.
The main application has spawned some threads.
On receiving a particular event it interrupts all the threads and calls system.exit(0).
Each thread after catching interrupted exception sends a interrupt to itself.
What I'm observing is, once in a while the spwned threads are still hanging even though the application has exited.
I'm having
1) java version "1.4.2_04" and
2) Linux 2.4.21-27.EL

After writing Java code for 6 or 7 years, then having a years break and writing C++
and D code. I came back to Java and am having the same problem as you.
The cause of my problem was that I was writing the wrong code lol I was
trying to use an ActionEvent instead of a WindowEvent ie:
Im on Slackware btw. (nothing but the best )
PS. I have also noticed that MPlayer does the same thing when you close it down.
you can see it in the System processes still running. I havent looked at their
code though.

Is Java 10.15.2.3 causing Firefox to crash?

Firefox keeps crashing when trying to open a Java applet. We have uninstalled and re-installed Java, tried older versions of java, uninstalled and re-installed Firefox, tried older version of Firefox, updated plug-ins, enables and disabled different plug-ins, and tried every other troubleshooting suggestion we could find, but we have yet to be able to open a Java applet without Firefox crashing. This problem is only with Firefox, it does not happen with Chrome or IE.

I cannot use Unicode alt codes as they cause Firefox's menus to pop up.

Whenever I try to use alphanumeric alt codes that conflict with existing menu shortcuts, (for example Alt+03BC), Firefox's menu keeps popping up (in this case, Bookmarks menu). This does not happen with codes without menu shortcuts, for eg. Alt+263A, or Alt+0024.
How can I get Firefox to ignore shortcuts while I am using alt codes? I would prefer not to disable menu shortcuts entirely.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
