"System extension cannot be used".  And now..?

This is not an HP question...
I recently reinstalled a mini with 10.5.8 and then Snow Leopard.  After installing the HP driver for their ScanJet 3670 the installation proceeded to very near the end and then threw up the message:
"System extension cannot be used
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/hpPlugInInit.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."
...and then the installation ending with "The installation was successful.", which it wasn't.  Following others' advice, I deleted the 'hpPlugInInit.kext' entity and reinstalled the software.  Same thing happened again.
I appreciate that this looks like HP's software failure, but would like some views on whether this is, perhaps, more related to the OS and its setup.  I don't know what the source of the offending kext is or whether it might be Rosetta-related - the 3670 is not supported under Lion (why it's installed on a SL machine and not my Lion box) and wonder whether this is just old code that is playing up.
Any ideas or solutions, please?

That will happen if the kext is not owned by root and/or doesn't pass code signing verification. If an installer was interrupted then it probably didn't finish its job and you'll need to trash that bundle.

  • 2questions: system extension cannot be used and reinstalling updates

My error message on start up says:
    *System extension cannot be used*
*The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/SeratoScratchDriver.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update*
It appeared after I was in the middle of downloading software updates and my wireless dropped out. I downloaded them again to see if the error message would disappear once they were installed and then I got the never ending loading screen. I tried restarting and now it just starts up as normal with the error message still appearing. I also tried reinstalling serato scratch live. Any advice??
If I archive and reinstall leopard..which seems to be the best solution for the blue screen, will I lose any files? Do you think this might get rid of my error message as well?

I have done permissions repair at least 10 times in a row and it still comes up with things to repair but is there another soloution?
Also, It says i have insufficient permissions to get onto my external HD now as well.
    Anything will help...

I had the same problem. Then due to another unrelated problem I did a file system check in single user mode and this problem too went away. I am not sure if it will also work for you but no harm to try.
Shutdown, restart by pressing power button. As soon as you hear the chime, press cmd-s. After a while lot of text will roll down the screen, leave the keys. At the prompt, type fsck -fy. Note the space. then hit return. If at the end of the run you get something was repaired, then run it again till you get 'OK'. After that type reboot and you will boot into regular OS X. Then do whatever you did to get this message and see if it goes away.

  • Changed Permission Settings: "System extension cannot be used"

I was having some weird problems with file sharing on my network recently, so I tried changing around some of the permissions on my drives to see if I could resolve it. For some reason I was getting messages saying I didn't have permission to copy files from one computer to another on my network. This seemed to come on randomly as we have been doing file transfers this way for quite some time now. I looked at our file sharing preferences in the System Preference's and added all 4 drives from my Mac Pro in there and made sure that my username had full read and write capabilities. I then tried logging into my Mac Pro from my iMac, just like I've done in the past, and I was still unable to copy the files. So I removed all the folders and turned off file sharing. I then clicked 'Get Info' for my main Macintosh HD and tried changing the permission settings there. I clicked the option to make my username the owner, and then I clicked 'Apply to enclosed items...' and this brought up a progress bar that I let go for about 10 minutes. Then I got a pop-up error message stating "System extension cannot be used" and had an extension path listed underneath, saying it was installed improperly and cannot be used. This happens an endless amount of times. It seems to be giving me this message for every single extension on the computer. If I hold down enter the pop-ups just keep coming with different extensions listed.
I hope someone with some insight on how permissions work in OS X Lion can give me some advice on how to resolve, and possible the correct way I should be setting up sharing if I've been doing wrong all this time. What strikes me as odd is that I never had any issues with sharing anything up until about a week or so ago, and I can't remember if there were any system updates that I installed that might have something to do with this.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

I had this problem recently in addition to my laptop getting stuck on the Apple logo and spinning icon. It took me a long to time to work through it so I thought I would share what I did to make it easier for others.
The best thing to do when having permission problems is to do a 'disk permissions repair'. You can do this using the disk utility app found in your applications/utilities folder. This will attempt to rewrite all the permissions that were incorrectly set. When it is doing this it is common to get a message saying 'ACL...found and not expected...' do not go and delete these files. Its normal for this correction process to take more than 30 minutes, for me it took an hour.
If this proccess doesnt work for you than you can also try a disk repair.
If you can't boot using the normal disk you can also access this program through the recovery boot (holding Command-R of Option at startup), through the safe mode (holding Shift on start up) or through a recovery CD. You can also boot in a terminal type mode but this is a last ditch effort as a misspelt command could do more damage. personally, because I do not know what the commands I am using actually mean, I would recommend talking to a person at apple then using this approach.
    Hope this helps

  • System extension cannot be used, now no AirPort Card Installed?!?!?!?!

    I have had my MBP for some time now and the other day it went into a kernel panic and after having to go through all the processes to recover it including restoring from the time capsule so that it doesn't take over 10 mins to start up an error message came up saying;
    "*System extension cannot be used*"
"the system extension '/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAirPortBrc m4311.kext' was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update"
Now i cant use my airport card at all, it says that there is no airport card installed and I have spent hours on the phone to apple, done the option + command + r + p thing and had to restore my whole system off my TC with the backup disks and all.
Plz plz plz plz help, i just want it back the way it was, this is so annoying

I had the same problem. It happened to me after I updated to 10.5.6. I didn't notice the problem until I rebooted a few days later. I reinstalled the system from disk and then realized that even though it took almost an hour it didn't really install anything. So I deleted the whole /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext and reinstalled the system again. This time it worked

I do not have a copy of the OS X 10.6.8 software. It is second hand so I have no product vendor to contact.
    What can I do?

You recently updated iTunes to v.11.4? This message has popped up on many a Mac screen when this version was first made available, because this kext was obviously faulty.
You should try to download iTunes 11.4 again from Apple's website: the new version bears the same name, but this kernel extension has been updated, and the issues it was causing are now a thing of the past.
    Should solve your problem, too...

  • Now what when i'm told: "System extension cannot be used"

I was installing Propellerheads Record ( package installation ) when this message pops up near the end of installation:
System extension cannot be used: The system extension "/System/Libraryu/Extensions/CmUSBMassStorage.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.
And then the installer went on and said installation was a success giving it the green check mark.
I have no clue who the vendor was.
    How do fix it?
Is it related somehow to my iMac 306 and it TB harddrive?

Sounds like a typo was made by the installer.
There is /System/Library/Extensions/ but no /System/Libraryu/Extensions/
The 'u' after Library may either indicate an accented symbol
The mass storage kernele extention for USB would be for devices that store data that are connected to your USB port. Now, I don't have a registration for their support website, however, they do have a Snow Leopard comaptibility statement if you do register. I would register, and see what it has to say, before you attempt any further installs.
Aside from my typing mistake i should have said that this was a demo version to give me a taste before i buy.
I've sent propellerheads a question thru their web page.

Interesting ... thank you! Actually I had that external drive, Western Digital, a while back on my second last? or third last? laptop ... the external drive died with a slew of pictures I had carefully uploaded to it  :-(
    I won't worry about it anymore  :-)
sorry you got only 5 points, can't figure how to give you 10 points.

  • Message displayed: System extension cannot be used  The system extension "//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

Received following message during installation of an iTunes update today (9/16/14):  System extension cannot be used. The system extension “//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.  What is to be done about it?

Thanks for the reply.  I'm not experienced in the inner workings of the iMac system and its programs, so please follow my train of thought as I try to find and understand your reply.
You wrote that I should check out "Please see - AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext error on installing iTunes update" and I did so.
There I found your reply of 9/1014 7:06 PM to j'ski stating: "There is a larger thread here which you may want to follow - system extension cannot be used AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext ."
And an earlier Post by Greg Earle of 9/10/14 5:57 PM stating: " You would have been better off doing open /System/Library/Extensions and then finding the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext kernel extension icon in the Finder window that came up and moving it to the Trash."
And a subsequent Post on 9/15/14 at 2:59 PM by Rob Maurer stating: "This method worked perfectly for me.  I am on a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion. Dragged the kext file to trash (I use EasyFind. Found the file, Revealed in Finder, dragged to Trash, entered admin password when requested). Downloaded iTunes 11.4 from the website. Installed from that download. Checked for that kext file in EasyFind again and found it had a creation date of 7/29/14 (the trashed one had a creation date from 2009). No more error messages.  ITunes opens fine.  Everything good. Will not update on my MacBook Pro until they fix this issue.
All of which leave me wondering - what is your answer/recommendation?  Do I drag the kext file to trash, download iTunes 11.4 from the website and install it from that download, check for that kext file again to see if it has a later date than the initial one?  And, if so, seed if iTunes opens okay or not?  And if so, do not update iTunes again until Apple fixes whatever is wrong?

    Please help!
After installing iTunes 11.0.1 I got a splash screen that appears after all updates.  The screen reads:
    System extension cannot be used
"The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/PulseDriver.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."
Question: How do I re-install or replace this file?

I submitted the above question, later finding that it has been answered by Buller already.  No one need reply as Buller's answer seems to solve the problem for others, and I'll try that.

I need to install update on Quicktime. I have version 7.6.6. Updates are supposed to be installed automatically. Macbook Pro 10.6.8 can't update to current version? I am told:

You can use Pacifist to just  install that kext if you want from that update file...

What's up with this?  The drive in question is an 80gb IDE external drive, USB connected.
    System extension cannot be used
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOStorageFamily.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used.  Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your  Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

Can somebody help me resolve this error message. Would this error affect my ability to run FaceTime ?

Seems pretty clear to me. Here's what you can try:
Open Terminal in your Utilities folder. Paste the following at the prompt:
         sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext
Press RETURN. Enter admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed so type carefully. Press RETURN again.
    Restart the computer.
