System extension cannot be used..why?

I get this message:
system extension cannot be used.
the system extension “/Library/Frameworks/PrivateTunnel.framework/Versions/Current/Extensions/tun.ke xt” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
What is wrong? How should fixt it?
O am very new with Mac and its OSX8.5
Thanks for help.
JJ

You really should contact the vendors technical support staff and have them assist you.
I note that you are using Lion.  Some modems can only work in 32 bit mode.  When you power up your MBP and hold the 2 and 3 keys down.  When the MBP finishes the boot, then install the modem software and see if it works.
Ciao.

  • "System extension cannot be used" after installing iTunes 11.4

Installing latest version of iTunes (11.4) today led to the following error message:
    System extension cannot be used
The system extension “//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.
I'm able to use my USB drive for Time Machine, and that appears to be functioning ok.  Why this error message?  Anyone else had it?  And what does it mean for the continued safe operation of my MacBook?  Would be reassuring to know if this is happening for anybody else, and if anyone else has found it affecting them. (Other than the distraction of getting a worrying error message that I take time out to report?)
    Thanks in advance.

the "//System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext can just be replaced to overcome the problem as indicated below. Mine was dated 2012 and after the latest iTunes update, stopped working. I noticed this as my personal hotspot connection between my MacBook Pro and my iPhone failed (I use the USB cable for this). To overcome the problem, first unlock the //System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext file, then drag it to the waste bin and empty the waste bin. Then download iTunes and reinstall-you don't have to remove anything-just reinstall. This will put back a newer //System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext file dated 2014. After this, restart your computer and it should now work. I checked the personal hotspot connection via my USB cable and this is what I'm using now writing and posting this. So Good luck. Hopefully Apple will fix this bug in the next update.

  • "System extension cannot be used".  And now..?

This is not an HP question...
I recently reinstalled a mini with 10.5.8 and then Snow Leopard.  After installing the HP driver for their ScanJet 3670 the installation proceeded to very near the end and then threw up the message:
    "System extension cannot be used
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/hpPlugInInit.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."
...and then the installation ending with "The installation was successful.", which it wasn't.  Following others' advice, I deleted the 'hpPlugInInit.kext' entity and reinstalled the software.  Same thing happened again.
I appreciate that this looks like HP's software failure, but would like some views on whether this is, perhaps, more related to the OS and its setup.  I don't know what the source of the offending kext is or whether it might be Rosetta-related - the 3670 is not supported under Lion (why it's installed on a SL machine and not my Lion box) and wonder whether this is just old code that is playing up.
    Any ideas or solutions, please?

That will happen if the kext is not owned by root and/or doesn't pass code signing verification. If an installer was interrupted then it probably didn't finish its job and you'll need to trash that bundle.

  • "System Extension cannot be used" problem...

Okay, so I have a brand new MacBook Pro, running the latest OS. Now, for some reason, I keep getting this error notice: "System Extension cannot be used."
I've been through DISK UTILITY, verified and repaired all "disk permissions," as well even "verified disk" (although nothing wrong or damaged have been found). I have even gone as far as ERASING my entire disk and RE-installing everything. However, no luck.
The thing is, verifying and repairing the disk permissions DO help, but there are still a number of extensions that do NOT get repaired. I don't know if this is significant, but I've had this problem 4 times in a row now, and after repairing the disk permission, the SAME EXACT extensions keep popping up as errors:
    "System Extension cannot be used"
    /System/libraryextensions/BJUSBLoad.kext
    /System/libraryextensions/EPSONUSBPrintClass
    /System/libraryextensions/hpdesignjetseries
    /System/libraryextensions/hpDeskjet_ioenabler
    /System/libraryextensions/hpfaxio

    /System/libraryextensions/hpPhotosmart_ioenabler
    /System/libraryextensions/hppsa640_ioenabler
    /System/libraryextensions/hpqc_ioenabler
FYI: my ipod touch doesn't synch with itunes after the above errors are displayed, and I have to re-download itunes.
What do I do? Why is this happening? Is there a way to fix these extensions? Is this happening possibly due to 3rd-party plug-ins being used (am using Spectrasonics Trillian and Omnisphere with Logic Pro 9 - although this is running perfectly on my iMac AND on another MacBook Pro)?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as I've got no more hair to pull out due to frustration! Thank you in advance!

But worse : all my new machines have been infected by the same error, because I did copy the oleder machine when installing them. Apple does not seem to care about this problem.
The solution should probably be that apple should make a fix, looking for old and uncompatible extensions and delete them or get the new ones from all the makers.
Apple! Who is going to face the problem ?

  • System extension cannot be used? (AppleAirport2.kext)

I rebooted my computer yesterday because it had started acting kindof slow for some reason. I figured that since quitting Safari, which had been open for several days, didn't do it- a reboot ought to.
When I logged in after rebooting, I got this message:
    "System extension cannot be used.
The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleAirPort2.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update."
I haven't installed or tinkered with my computer recently, and it's been rebooted several times since the last time I had, so I don't understand why it suddenly seemed to forget it had an Airport Extreme card.
I tried throwing the Airport Extreme updates on a USB drive and reinstalling it, but it didn't do the trick.
It's running OS X 10.4, I'm pretty sure it's the .6 release, but I don't have the machine in front of me at the moment to verify.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this may have happened, or how I can fix it? Thank you so much in advance!

    It is, indeed, running 10.4.6.
It was 10.4.5's combo update that had the file.
I tried installing and replacing the version of AppleAirport2.kext and rebooting and it didn't give that message when I logged in anymore. It still wasn't seeing that there was an AirportExtreme card present, though.
I deleted the file, as well as the two cache files as I had seen to try doing before I posted here, rebooted, installed the file with Pacifist.
I was using my PowerBook to check my settings here while the G5 started up. iChat on the PowerBook logged off, and I heard it log in on the G5!
    Thank you both so much!

  • HP Laser Printer message saying "System Extension Cannot Be Used"

I am trying to install a laserjet printer but while it was installing, a message came up which read, "'System Extension Cannot Be Used'   The system extension, "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext' was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update." We tried the printer out and it seems to work, however, the scanner does not work.
When I got this Mac Book Pro, 4 or 5 years ago, I had a HP inkjet printer which I can never use the scanning feature because it did not work. I don't remember what the error message was, but it never worked when I tried to use it. I wonder if the problems with scanning have to do with this particular file that is supposedly installed wrongly.
We tested the printer out and it worked fine. But no scanning. It can't find the scanner.
My computer is Mac OS X - 10.6.8. The printer is HP Laserjet  Pro 200 color MFP.
Anyone have any idea what I should do to fix this error? Thanks.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder, copy and paste the entire following line into it, and press the Run button:
do shell script "chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" with administrator privileges
If it doesn’t work, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /System/Library/Extensions/ as the path, throw the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext item away, and reinstall iTunes.

  • System extension cannot be used  --can anyone help ?

so i spotted that the system library as well as the home library had permissions blocked for the administrator, so i unlocked all enclosed items permissions.
i already had issues being brought to senior advisor attention over 1,5 years now, about hangs and freezes. mostly hangs.
no one so far has been able to fix them.
well now spotting these warnings, after i allowed all permissions inside both libraries, have warnings show up.
i gather these are not prepperly installed softwares, but i cant figure out what softwares they could be, so i can take care of it.
so 4 warnings shows up :
    System extension cannot be used
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/System.kext/PlugIns/Unsupported.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.

The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/System.kext/PlugIns/Private.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
    System extension cannot be used
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOPCIFamily.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
    System extension cannot be used
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.

There isn't an "administrator" so who did you add and what permissions did you set.
In Get Info, they should be
    system    read & write
    wheel       read Only
    everyone  read only
The posix permissions, owner, and group should be
    rwxr-xr-x  root wheel
    with ACE "group:everyone deny delete"
You may be able to recover by repairing permissions in Disk Utility, but you may have to reinstall the OS.

  • System extension cannot be used, now no AirPort Card Installed?!?!?!?!

    I have had my MBP for some time now and the other day it went into a kernel panic and after having to go through all the processes to recover it including restoring from the time capsule so that it doesn't take over 10 mins to start up an error message came up saying;

"the system extension '/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAirPortBrc m4311.kext' was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update"
Now i cant use my airport card at all, it says that there is no airport card installed and I have spent hours on the phone to apple, done the option + command + r + p thing and had to restore my whole system off my TC with the backup disks and all.

I had the same problem. It happened to me after I updated to 10.5.6. I didn't notice the problem until I rebooted a few days later. I reinstalled the system from disk and then realized that even though it took almost an hour it didn't really install anything. So I deleted the whole /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext and reinstalled the system again. This time it worked

I have done permissions repair at least 10 times in a row and it still comes up with things to repair but is there another soloution?
Also, It says i have insufficient permissions to get onto my external HD now as well.
    Anything will help...

I had the same problem. Then due to another unrelated problem I did a file system check in single user mode and this problem too went away. I am not sure if it will also work for you but no harm to try.
Shutdown, restart by pressing power button. As soon as you hear the chime, press cmd-s. After a while lot of text will roll down the screen, leave the keys. At the prompt, type fsck -fy. Note the space. then hit return. If at the end of the run you get something was repaired, then run it again till you get 'OK'. After that type reboot and you will boot into regular OS X. Then do whatever you did to get this message and see if it goes away.

  • "System extension cannot be used" when updating iTunes

Every time I update iTunes through the standard Software Update, I get multiple messages towards the end of the installation saying:

This only happens when updating iTunes. Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

You both may want to read this article before proceeding. It does give you an idea about kext files and how to handle them.

But the update appeared to complete successfully.

That appears to be some (antiquated?) third party driver for an external USB device.

You recently updated iTunes to v.11.4? This message has popped up on many a Mac screen when this version was first made available, because this kext was obviously faulty.
You should try to download iTunes 11.4 again from Apple's website: the new version bears the same name, but this kernel extension has been updated, and the issues it was causing are now a thing of the past.
    Should solve your problem, too...
