(System Extension) SymOSXKernelUtilities.kext problem

I am working on an imac 5.1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 Ghz. After the computer screen comes up a window says that System extension cannot be used
quote"The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/SymOSXKernelUtilities.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update. I updated the system software to 10.4.11. everything seems to function fine except maybe a little slow. I also repaired permissions and disc.
I found the extension, but do I need it? What do I do next? Help.

Your right I had the wrong one. I downloaded the correct update and that did not work either.
I went into the system/library/extensions and unlocked the file and physically removed it. that seemed to solve the problem for a while, but occasionally it would still pop up with the error message.
Safari browser does not work now so I put the extension back in the folder and safari still does not work. I have in internet connection as I can ping out and my network preferences say I am connected.
I believe this all started when the person I am fixing the computer for tried using "norton utilities"
I found use of it in a log file dated about when the problems started. I am almost to the point of a total reinstall of the software. I also ran disk repair. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • The system extension EyeOne.kext"

    Hi
I've seen this in 'lepoard' discussions related to Roxio software.
The system extension “/Library/Extensions/EyeOne.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
However, I get it when updating Parallells desktop. It doesn't seem to cause me any problems but maybe I just haven't used the feature this is part of.
Anyway I don't like error messages on my Mac so wondered if anyone had any idea what EyeOne.ktest was for and how I install it propally if I need to.
    Thanks

  • System extension hpPlugInInit.kext was installed improperly and printing won't work

Installing the software results in non funclltioning or poorly function printer on both of our macs. Each computer has a printer. I get a message that "System Extension cannot be used. "/System/Library/Extensions/hpPlugininit.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the products vender for an update.
An Apple repair shop 60 mi. away didn't seem to have much problem getting one computer fixed today. I reinstalled the software and the printer printed today. I started the set up with a cable connection and then the printer wanted to go wireless. It printed but only did one side of a page. I haven't had the printer for very many months and it did do two sided printing and everything else. I think the problem may have started after an Apple software update. I cannot delete the damaged software. It is protected from my messing up the software.
This computer will go to the shop Thursday morning if I can't fix it before that.

    Hi,
click the Finder icon, then click the Go menu and select Computer.
Select your active boot volume, will usually appear as Macintosh-HD.
Browse to System > Library/Extensions and type hpPlugininit into the search bar, select to search in the Exxtensions folder and move the hpPlugininit.kext file to the trash.
Empty the trash, then reinstall the latest driver below:

Maybe your looking in the wrong "Library". On my Mavericks; I open the HD to see a folder below the Library Folder called "Systems". Open the Systems Folder to see a "Library Folder". Open that library folder to see "Extensions folder". Open the extensions folder to find the "AppleUSBethernetHost.kext" and delete that extention. Following Lanny's post, do this:
    1st- Close iTunes.
2nd- Delete the system extension “AppleUSBethernetHost.kext” from here:
      //System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBethernetHost.kext
3rd- go to iTunes 11.4 download, here:  https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
click on the "Download Now" link.
4th- Find the downloaded iTunes11.4.dmg file, open it, now open the Install iTunes.pkg
After the re-install as above I got the successfully installed window and no “pop up”
    improperly installed AppleUSBMultitouch.kext warning window.

  • One Way to Fix the "System Extension Cannot Be Used, AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" Error...

I found (one) way to fix this error...well, at least it worked for me (see below):
There seem to be various threads addressing this issue and no "one" way is the right way for everyone. I'm running my Macbook on OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Once I installed the iTunes update, two things happened: my iPhone became corrupted when I sync'd via USB and then my iTunes stopped recognizing the iPhone as a "sync-able" device -- meaning it would show up on iTunes but when you went to click sync, the sync button was unavailable.
I tried locating the .kext file, deleting it, repairing it, replacing with an older version, entered different commands in terminal but I kept getting the same error. Ultimately, I fixed the problem fairly simply, but it may not be something everyone is willing to do. If you have an external hard-drive and had your computer hooked up to Time Machine, this is what you should do:
Hopefully you'd been backing your computer up automatically fairly recently, and you have some this stored on an external hard drive via Time Machine from before iTunes 11.4 was downloaded onto your computer.
If you haven't done so already, and your iTunes library isn't corrupt, Backup your entire iTunes library to an external hard-drive (if you don't care about your library, ignore this step...this procedure might not work, however, if your first backup of your iTunes library is via version 11.4. If you go through all of these steps and you encounter the same problem, restore your itunes to an older version via Time Machine, then redo steps)
To do this, create a new Folder on your hard drive and call it "iTunes"
Go into your iTunes preferences > Advanced > under "iTunes Media folder location" we want it to say /Volumes/(Your Hard Drive Name)/iTunesNext to the "iTunes Media folder location" dialogue box, it should read CHANGE or RESET. Click CHANGE, navigate to your external hard drive and locate the newly created iTunes folder...your computer should automatically start to transfer your library to the new destination.
Backup and "new files" on your computer that you create since updating your iTunes to version 11.4 (i.e. new iCal entries, documents)
Backup your important files (I have mine in dropbox but chose to be safe and backed them up on an external hard drive as well)
Once you have everything saved, you're going to want to go through the process of completely restoring your entire computer (essentially wiping it clean).
To do this on Snow Leopard, you need to have the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installing disc.
Insert disc > when the Install screen pops up, select Utilities... > it will then prompt you to Restart your computer
After your computer restarts, it will prompt you to reinstall Snow Leopard or select a different option from Utilities which can now be found at the top of your screen on the toolbar. From there, select the option that is along the lines of Restore from Backup Using Time Machine and then select which backup you want to restore your computer to ... since iTunes 11.4 went live on Sept. 10th, I would restore to any date before that.
When your computer restores itself to your chosen backup, your computer should be exactly as it was on that date, iTunes included. It's as if nothing ever happened.
To do this on any later OS X, I believe you have to restart your computer and then hold COMMAND+R before the grey screen appears. From here, I believe it will prompt you similarly to the Snow Leopard procedures 1-3 as listed just above this bullet point.
When your computer prompts you to update iTunes to version 11.4 from whatever version you reverted back to, DO NOT UPDATE. Keep your old iTunes version and wait for this thing to be addressed by Apple.
This procedure worked for me and although it's a bit tedious, it fixed both my iTunes and iPhone errors. Note: I did have to erase and restore my iPhone through an old backup via iTunes once iTunes was working again. Try it out. See if it works for you. MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR FILES BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY FULL SYSTEM RESTORE.

There's more to it than this IMHO.  Here is my explanation:
If I go back in my Time Machine backups and restore the previous version before I installed iTunes 11.4, the version of that same kext was also listed as being "7.0" despite being older and twice the size (120400 bytes vs. 63024 bytes in the 11.4-installed version).
(The older version is "BuildVersion 305" and "SourceVersion 122000000000000"; the new 11.4 version is "BuildVersion 417" and "SourceVersion 113000000000000".)
    The real problem is this:
    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents/_CodeSignature used to contain
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  172 Jan 31  2014 CodeDirectory
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel    92 Jan 31  2014 CodeRequirements
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  1745 Jan 31  2014 CodeResources
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  4064 Jan 31  2014 CodeSignature
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents used to contain symbolic links down into there:
    lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    28 Jun 12  2012 CodeDirectory@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeDirectory
    lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    31 Jun 12  2012 CodeRequirements@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeRequirements
    lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    28 Jun 12  2012 CodeSignature@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeSignature
When iTunes 11.4 was installed via Software Update/App Store, it removed CodeDirectory/CodeRequirements/CodeSignature but it did not remove the corresponding symbolic links.  Presumably that is what triggered the "cannot be used" pop-up message.
Trashing the kext and installing it from the downloaded 11.4 .dmg does not create the symbolic links, thus avoiding the problem.
Obviously rolling back to the previous (Jan 2014) kext will fix the problem as well as the symbolic links point to files that exist.
(I'm really curious to know what happened between BuildVersion 305 and BuildVersion 417 that caused it to shrink nearly by half.  It looks to me like the Code Signing stuff got ripped out - Lord knows why.)

  • //System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext

I got a message saying that this:  //System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext was not installed properly and needed to be reinstalled.  How do I do that?

Thanks to you both, this fix worked for me too, after long ignoring the error message and vainly waiting for Apple to get around to an update.
Then last night I lost my Internet cable connection, which uses Ethernet between the modem and my iMac (Max OS X 10.6.8). At first, I blamed my ISP because the modem played up for a while, but after I rebooted it a few times, it returned to normal, but I still couldn't get online. I suspected, rightly or wrongly, that this faulty kernel extension might be the culprit. It took me 90 minutes' fiddling to obtain a slow Internet link, but that enabled me to download iTunes 11.4 from Apple.
I cautiously created a "Pre-trash" folder in which I dumped the non-functioning AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext and a back-up of iTunes library files before using the iTunes installer, with an eye on the open //System/Library/Extensions finder window. When the new kernel extension popped up in it towards the end of the installation, I noticed that it bore the date July 29, 2014! Its predecessor dated from mid-2009. This is not the first time in many years that an iTunes upgrade via Software Update has caused problems, usually corrected by downloading directly from the Apple site.
I fixed permissions for good measure and have found that my Internet connection is also nice and fast again, but I have no idea whether that's pure coincidence.

  • N-Mon.kext system extension cannot be used

        Hi all!
    I bought a macbook pro md318.
In some point, after I used for a couple of days, an error message began to show on a window from time to time
    The message says:
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/N-Mon.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
Do you know how can I resolve this issue?
    My MacOSX version is 10.7.4
    Thanks a lot!

The problem is that I go to finder/applications and I don't see any VUZE app installed.
The only torrent program that I installed is utorrent, wich I uninstalled by dragging the application on finder/applications to the trash.
Do you think that this might be causing the error?
    thanks for your answers!

Some exteral FireWire optical DVD/RW+CD/RW drives work fine, but
may have an issue on attempting to boot the original or third party
OSX bootable install/restore disc or one otherwise made to boot the Mac.
This is where it's nice to have a decent return policy at the place of purchase.
Also, a Mac-Friendly reseller should have someone on their staff, perhaps
in the service department or an Apple sales specialist who uses Macs,
who can suggest such an external optical drive to suit your needs for now.
There are several generally good brands; but I am not sure what ones
are most likely to do this critical function. For other features that may
or may not work (such as burning various disc formats, etc) you could
use shareware or freeware disk burning utilities. I found a few free ones.
You should be able to possibly use another computer's optical
drive to attempt a reinstall (archive & install may not fix it) of
the dysfunctional Mac's OSX to get the suspect extension back.
[I'm still wondering if the extension itself is the problem. Some of
the items that show up in a System Log as being bad can be
worked around by the system, or were items by-passed in a
system upgrade at some time in the past. A full reinstall may work.]
There may be another route to take, and suggestions outside
of these few would be entertained. It would be a BYOB sorta deal.

I'm still with you, just having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that you reinstalled OS X, which is like shooting a mosquito with a cruise missile, yet the problem remains.
Here is the KB article for your review: Reinstalling Mac OS X
Admittedly there is not much to it, but it should have eradicated the problem.
I would guess that the 17 "hp_" messages have something to do with Hewlett-Packard and in fact I do use an HP printer with the computer.  I uninstalled the printer software and reinstalled it.  The printer seems to work fine, but the kernel extension error messages still keep appearing.  I'm inclined just to delete these 17 kernel extensions and then, if the printer doesn't work correctly, unintall and reinstall the printer software again.  Sound sensible?
It certainly does. The only thing I can think of is that the OS reinstallation did not recognize those kernel extensions and left them untouched, AND the HP uninstaller did not remove them, AND the HP installer did not perform correctly. Having suffered through several HP botched software attempts I tend to believe that remains a posssibility.
If you are so inclined, I would remove the troublesome .kext files as you say, then reboot. Be prepared for the printer to stop working, but once you remove them try the printer again anyway. The vast majority of printers do not require any specific downloads since their drivers are already built into OS X.
As a last resort try reinstalling OS X again (I know...) and run Software Update to bring everything up to date. Apple released some new printer drivers a few weeks ago.
Finally, if this doesn't work post the same question as a new topic since I am out of ideas. A new topic will get more attention than unresolved questions with responses.
