Hi,
One of the staffs have accidentally deleted some files in my system, He do not know which they are but suspects it can be system32.But after this the system still runs and all services are functioning as usual.
But some applications does not open, for example Hyper-V Manager, Server Manager....When i open it says the mmc snap in might not have installed properly, though i can see all these applications still reside inside system32.
I need advise how to restore these deleted files either from the source cd, or any other.
Please advise.

  • System file deletion to boot in Lion?

What I would like to know is what system file can I delete from the system when booted from another partition so I can boot up in Lion.
Lion locked up when I had ten applications open with a multiple windows and I had to do a HARD SHUT DOWN.
Now every time i try to boot into Lion it tries to reopen all the apps and windows and locks up again.
There must be an "com.apple." file that has this information in it.
I'm now booting from my Snow Leopard partition and need to fix Lion from here.

  • Windows system files deleted on oracle host

    hi experts,
i have an issue regarding oracle database on windows XP... one of my client is using oracle 9.0.1.0
he used it for 5 years having no problem at all, but couple of days before, he installed internet connection on the oracle host, and soon after he start using internet, some OS files get corrupted with virus. he scan the machine with anti virus software, but his luck was really very bad, while scanning power goes off and server faces abnormal shutdown.
after restarting server, he found that oracle is not getting open and some programs also fails to run. no error stack was generated though. i think some files which are corrupted with virus might got deleted with anti virus scan.
these files don't belongs to oracle but to operating system (system 32) folder.now, when we are trying to access oracle we have to navigate to $ORACLE_HOME/ora90/BIN directory even to obtain LSNRCTL prompt and to perform any activity.
when we try to connect to database as sysdba it says "ORA- 12203: TNS unable to connect destination".
i tried listener.ora,tnsmnames.ora file but they are ok. all the oracle directory structure is intact and ORACLE_HOME is set to c:\oracle\ora90\
i even tried to recreate instance and tried starting database, but no luck...services in control panel are started.
what else i should be looking for????? can anyone suggest some solutions???
    it will be really appreciable..
    thanks and regards
    VD

    Hello,
+1. first time "ORA-12203 unable to connect destination:"+
Make sure you have correct entries for Host in listener.ora and tnsnames.ora. What is your machine name? Post your tnsnames.ora and listener.ora entries.
    What does your alert.log says?
    +2. second time invalid username/password+
+3. another time after entering username it dosent ask for password and hangs.....for long+
    Did you try following command
    C:>sqlplus "/as sysdba' --> OS authenticaiton.
    {code}
listener is up and oracle service<sid> is also up...
+it is not allowing me to start DBCA either.....do i need to reinstall oracle software, create instance, with existing pfile?? can we specisy pfile=<path> in oradim command???+
h4. If you have choice of re-install and recreate instance,  then I think you should go with it as this way it will be faster to get going.
h4. But if you just want to install software then shutdown instance and listener and re-install same version and try it to bring it up.

  • Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original location - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it

Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original locations - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it - also, when transferring large amounts of files it becomes a very large problem remembering which files were transferred and which not.

You're going to need to be more specific, as I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about.
If you're referring to copying from an external hard drive or flash drive, and you want to actually move files rather than copy them, you can hold down the option key to force it to do a "move" rather than a "copy." This is not new behavior, though... the Mac OS has worked this way as long as I can recall (and I've been using it since 1984).
If you're having a problem with trying to move files from one place to another on a single drive causing them to be copied instead, that is likely because of some permissions issue preventing you from actually being able to move them.

  • Won't boot from install discs after deleting some system files

I've been looking through the forum and haven't found an answer to my problem - maybe someone can help me out.
I have an aluminum Powerbook G4, 1.67, 1.5 RAM, 10.4.11. I was experiencing the problem with FCE capturing video for about 5 minutes and then freezing, and I read some threads here about how this can be fixed by returning to Quicktime 7.2 and installing it with Pacifist. I did this, but first tried to delete my previous Quicktime version files, and obviously I deleted some system files in the process. That's how my new problem started.
Programs now that do not open - Preview, iTunes, iMovie, FCE, Yahoo, Mail, and Microsoft Messenger. I no longer have my date/time/battery level/airport/bluetooth indicators in my toolbar. The Spotlight icon flashes, but will not open. Also, when opening the System Preferences pane, it opens just for a second or two and then crashes and closes. Safari, airport, and Word all work, though, and I still can access internet.
I tried to re-install OS 10.4 from my black install disc. The computer reads the disc, but after I click the installer icon and then "restart," the computer fails to completely reboot. The disc spins in the drive, I get the Apple, the indicator, and then the screen goes to blue and the disc soon stops spinning. Nothing happens after that. I've tried rebooting by holding down the C key but the same happens. When I hold down the option key, I get to the point where I can choose to boot from the install disc, and then the same thing happens - the blue screen and nothing more. Booting with the shift key held down doesn't work either.
I did just have a repair by Apple - my adaptor plug sparked when inserting it into the outlet, and I had to have the logic board replaced. But the computer seemed to be working fine when I got it back, except for the FCE issue first mentioned. Looks like my good intentions have done me in.
The install disc is about three years old, and is in good condition. It's been in the garage, so could heat or cold affect the readability of the disc?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can boot from my install disc and get a fresh install of my OS?

    Hi bboross,
Tough without a Tiger Disk, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(space between fsck and -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

If you're on 10.7 or 10.8, try the recovery option:

  • Reinstalling Deleted System Files?

Hi, I accidentally deleted some of the system files... it's a long story. lol.
If I do an Archive and Install, will it reinstall all of the original system files? My fonts were also deleted. An Archive and Install will fix that as well, correct?
Thank you so much for your help!

Hello! An archive and istall should do what you want unless you added other fonts than what is normally installed. It does just what it says...it installs a new system leaving your apps and docs intact. Sometimes the preserve user settings etc. doesn't always work as expected. Tom

  • I accidentally deleted hidden system files! Please help!

    Hi guys.
Well after purchasing a mint MBP today running Mountain Lion, I wanted to "tidy up" the desktop and Finder. I saw many hidden files and thought it was very peculiar as my iMac hasn't got anything of the kind. I thought it could have been some files from a USB that were left there from previous usage. Anyway, I've ended up deleting key system files which now causes the MacBook to fail boot and keep restarting.
I've attempted the highly recommended "Command R" function which gave me a choice of Time Machine Restore (system comes up with no backups), re-installation of Lion (which won't work because the system is running Mountain Lion) and a Disk Utility repair (which does its job but makes no difference on start up). I feel really upset and annoyed. The system had great installations of key apps I needed. I'd be sad to loose them but would be happy to just get the system rebooted and running from scratch.
The system is a late 15" 2011 MACBOOK PRO with an i7 Quad 2.44 (or 2.66) processor, 4GB memory and a 750GB hard drive.
What can I do? Is it just a case of take it to Apple so they can reboot it for you? And if that's the case will I be charged?
    Many thanks for the advice.
Apologies if this is something you have heard before, it's a horrible feeling and I just want it fixed.
    Thanks.
    Hal.

To install Lion that belongs to you will require you to repartition the drive first. You cannot do a simple reinstall of Lion over a Mountain Lion system. You will need to follow this guide instead:
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This is the procedure you must go through because your hard drive does not have a Lion version of the Recovery HD.

  • I accidentally deleted the systems file on my macbook.

In preparation for upgrading from Leopard 5.8 to Snow Leopard I backed up my entire macbook system to an external hard drive.  Then I deleted some files prior to installing Snow Leopard but I accidentally deleted the systems files.  I can't boot the system now.  How do I resolve the situation?

    Thanks for the reply.
The backup was via Time Machine.
No, I have not tried booting from the SL 6.0 disc using the c key or Option/alt key.  When do I push the option/alt key?

  • Deleted system files, MBA doesn't operate anymore.

    Hello everyone,
I'm new to mac and i just installed some programs yesterday. Because I have a 64GB MBA I thought I should delete some stuff and I guess I accidentally deleted some system files. Now my MBA doens't operate proper and I can't open anything. Finder crashes all the time and I can't go trough my stuff. I need my schoolstuff back..
Is there anyone out there who can help me with this issue?
    Halit.

I is not my purpose to preach but every user that has valuable data should have a backup.  Based on your response I sense that you do not but I suspect you are coming to understand the value of backing up your data.
What you may have deleted in error is an unknown.  It may very well have included some/all of your data.  Theoretically and OSX installation will not delete any user data.
The choices that you have are as follows:
    1. Try the reinstall as described earlier.
    2. See if you can start the MBA in target disk mode and copy data off of the MBA SSD and then perform the reinstall.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10725
    3. Get data recovery software and try to get the data on another storage device.
    4. Employ a data recover firm to retrieve the data, but that will be very expensive with no guarantees of ANY success.
    Ciao.

  • Deleted a system file, now nothing works

    Hi,
I downloaded and used a 3rd party file that changes the login window UI, but decided yesterday I wanted it back to normal, I had a backup of the original file already in the directory, so I deleted the file and double clicked the zip file (thinking stupidly this was it done).
But it appears I've deleted the file and the file didn't unzip and now my mac won't boot up at all, it's stuck in an endless blue screen loop at the login window.
    The directory is - System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgentPlugins
and the file itself in that folder is - loginwindow.bundle
So I've completely screwed things up, here is the things I have tried and failed:
    - Holding 'C' with Snow Leopard Installation CD (the CD is a bit scratched, don't know if that's relevant to it not working)
    - Holding 'C' with Leopard Installation CD
    - Booting into safe mode
    - Booting into single user mode (successfully) and tried /sbin/fsck -fy (it repaired something but it still doesn't boot)
I was hoping I could archive and install from the OS DVD, but for some reason it doesn't seem responsive (blank white screen, or at one point just shutdown my macbook).
All because of one system file?
Is there anyway I can unzip the file back to where it should be? Is there anyway I can archive and install from single user mode? Is there anyway I can repair the system files to default from single user mode? Or do a OS DVD repair from single user mode? Better yet - is there anyway I can completely bypass the login GUI window?
I know the exact file, I have the default file in the correct directory, I know where the problem is - I just can't get to it.
I really don't want to loose everything on my HD.

If you're unable to boot from a Mac OS X install disk, there are a few possible reasons:
    1) The disk is damaged
    2) The disk is not appropriate for the computer
    3) The optical drive is damaged
    4) There's some other hardware problem
    5) The hard drive is so badly corrupted that you can't boot from anything (rare, I've only seen a confirmed case like this once)
    6) You have a peripheral connected that is interfering
If #1 is the case, there's not much you can do but replace the disk. In the case of #2, note that gray disks that shipped with a different machine won't work and that [you can't install an older system than what shipped on your machine|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186]. #3 is probably only diagnosable (is that a word?) if your system is working (so you can test other disks) or if Apple takes a look at it. #4 can be tested with [Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509], if you can manage to boot into that. And #5 can be difficult to fix, usually involving the assistance of another machine (for example, you could boot in [FireWire target mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661] and try repairing with something like [DiskWarrior|http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html] or just erase the drive). Finally, #6 is easy to test - just unplug everything but the keyboard and mouse and test again.
Since fsck reported errors on your drive that had to be repaired, #5 could be possible, but then I would think it wouldn't boot into single-user mode. Try going back to single-user mode and keep running fsck repeatedly until no problems are found (or until you're reasonably sure they won't be fixed).
Unfortunately, since we know your hard drive was damaged, you may have already lost everything on the drive if you didn't have backups.

  • I may have deleted some system files from my computer due to my antivirus and now my imac won't start. Actually it does, and then there is a blank screeen with the apple logo and it shuts down right away. is tehre a possibility of recovering my files?

    Hello
I was having some problems with my Imac, for a while it was slow and often disconneceted from my wifi, while this one worked perfectly (tested with other devices)
I thoug i might have a virus, so i downloaded an antivirus (mac keeper) and started checking.
I also did a scan of my computer using Console or something from the utilities, and then a folder popped witha  file I had canceled a while ago. I canceled the file and then my Imac continued to be slow.
i then restarted my Imac, but when it started, the usual grey logo of Apple appeared, and then it shut down suddently.
I tried to reboot it holding the command key and R but nothing, and then i tried holding the shift key and a bar appeared, and at half of the bar it sut itself down again.
I think it is probably a preoblem because I may have cancelled some of the system files from a folder called "private" in the "documents" folder.
Is there any way I can recover some of my files? maybe all of them? I hope so because I have some important files there
Is this a thing I can do myself or do Ineed to go to a MacStore to repair it? Will I need to change HD or just to format it and reinstall? also if there is any way i can recover some of my files that would be great.
    Thanks
    Ludo
P.S. problems appeared when i installed the Mavericks version.

If MacKeeper corrupted the Recovery partition then even I underestimated its potential for damage. Garbage "cleaning" apps will cause misery but I have not found that the Recovery partition to have been affected by using MacKeeper or anything like it. I doubt that it did so, but I have learned not to underestimate the potential for such things to result in system corruption.
Before concluding your Mac has a hardware failure, try booting OS X Internet Recovery by holding command option r on startup (three fingers). That will force your iMac to bypass the Recovery partition altogether, and convey the ability to create a new one.
An Internet connection will be required (wired or wireless).
At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
Assuming the HD remains usable you can then use Disk Utility to erase it. Reinstall OS X, restore your essential software and other files, and don't reinstall the junk.

  • Can time machine restore system language files deleted by "monolingual'?

I've removed some important language files while using monolingual (namely -English (American) -English (British) not realizing these are subset and required).
I should've read the FAQ first... now some programs are appearing in weird character formats.
Can I replace those files with my Time Machine back ups?
Which folder would I need to replace back with previous file?
Since I did this only late last night, I should be able to just replace a certain system file folder, without causing much headache, I'm hoping!

    kacmaz wrote:

    Yes.
Which folder would I need to replace back with previous file?
That's the problem; language files aren't in a central location; each application has it's own set of language files, containing the translations of the messages for that application.
Since I did this only late last night, I should be able to just replace a certain system file folder, without causing much headache, I'm hoping!
I don't know much about Monolingual; I don't know if it removes language files from your System folders, or only Applications. And if you've installed any apps anywhere else, I don't know if it got them, too.
If you're only having trouble with apps, you might be ok to restore only Applications, but to get everything back the way it was, you'd need to do a full system restore, per #14 in the Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
