System fonts conflict

Hi there, I own an AD agency with a few of these leopards running... I had 2 major issues:
1. adobe virtual printer pausing and unable to distill a PDF file out of word.
2. a terrible font conflict due to the overlapping presence of the Helvetica Neue in the system folder and in Suitcase Fusion where the "System Font ovverride" option is checked...
Spent the whole day struggling would be great to share with someone.

I share your pain, but haven't found a solution.
I have a design firm. I’ve installed Leopard on my Macbook Pro 17 without incident, as a pretrial before installing it on my working studio machines.
It appears that Leopard now includes Helvetica Neue and Helvetica (not so Neue) in the primary system fonts folder. The addition of Helv Neue to this folder is new with Leopard.
These fonts are now triggering eleven conflict message windows (one for each flavor of font) when Font Agent Pro is used to fire up the Adobe versions of these fonts (upon which I rely heavily in my design business). These warnings have to be closed one by one. Once my Adobe fonts are loaded, there are all kinds of anomalies in the Apple apps that use these fonts, including Safari, Mail many widgets, iCal and so on.
Any attempt to remove these fonts from the system folder results in their automatically being replaced. It’s as though the computer is telling me that “resistance is futile”.
We have hundreds of documents where Helvetica Neue or Helvetica are part of the design. Leopard will be a non starter in the design shop if we can’t beat this. I thought Apple knew they had a strong presence in the design industry. This is bone-headed planning on their part!

  • System fonts deleted....whoops

I installed Suitcase to manage my fonts, and when I tried to activate the fonts, a window popped up with a message that said there was a conflict with fonts in my system fonts folder, suggesting I delete them and restart. Upon doing so and restarting, my computer no longer boots up past the initial blue screen. my mouse/curser is still active, but it's locked up. I'm positive it has to do with my deleting the fonts, the question is, what can i do to fix?

Take a look here - towards the bottom
    http://www.tcinternet.net/users/jklstudios/temp/osx4.html
If you can't get your own system up, you could start up as a target disk from another mac - using a firewire cable - your mac will show up as a hard drive - then run the font install from that mac as described in that document.
If you can't do this then I'm afraid you need to do an archive and install from the DVD - which should preserve everything but reinstall the OS.
    Best of luck.

  • System fonts not showing in Font Book

I am using Font Agent Pro as a font manager and am wondering if there's a conflict with it and Apple's Font Book. I cannot get the system fonts to show up in Font Book and, hence, those (System) fonts don't show in Apple apps, e.g., Safari, Grapher, Text Edit, etc., etc.
The only way I can get the system fonts to show in apple apps it to drag the System>Library>Fonts folder to the "Collection" column onto the "Computer" collection. This is fine, but it copies the System fonts to the ComputerName>Library>Fonts folder.
I've tried for hours to get the System fonts to show in Font Book and do it without the System fonts being copied to the Library or User folder, i.e., I want the System fonts to stay in the System fonts folder only.
If I boot into another partition and bring up Font Book everything works as I would expect, and Font Agent Pro is not installed on that partition...
    Any Ideas?

    Hi PS1,
I am using Font Agent Pro as a font manager and am wondering if there's a conflict with it and Apple's Font Book.
Yes, in a sense. If you always open and close your fonts through FAP's interface, then it's no problem leaving Font Book on your Mac. It will simply sit there and take up a small amount of disk space.
That said, it's still a nuisance having more than one font manager on your computer at a time. Say you disable all of the fonts in Font Book that you can. Assuming the fonts are still in the /Library/Fonts/ folder, you then turn them on and off with FAP. The problem then is which orders are the applications going to believe? Are the fonts active, according to FAP? Or inactive, according to Font Book?
Also, if you double click on any font to quick activate it, both FAP and Font Book will activate the font. So you will find yourself confused fairly often when you deactivate the font in FAP, but they still keep showing up in your applications as active. That would be because Font Book is still holding it open.
So if FAP is going to be your main font manager, then copy Font Book off to another disk for safe keeping (so you don't have to use Pacifist or an OS install to get it back on your system if you need, or want to), and then remove it from your hard drive.
Definitely don't remove the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder! If you remove Lucida Grande from its default location in any way, you will lose control of your desktop. The only way I can think that Taavi managed to accomplish this was moving files around booted to an external drive, or from another Mac via FireWire Target Mode. It's impossible to do on the same drive your booted to. You'll lose control of the desktop every time if you remove Lucida Grande. Although Taavi may have made his/her copy to the /Library/Fonts/ folder. That at least would still leave an active copy of Lucida Grande somewhere, but I highly recommend against that sort of handling of the system fonts.

  • Font Conflict

I just installed Tiger (10.4.9) and am now having font conflicts. I purchased fonts from fontdiner.com and 8 of the 12 fonts are now "in conflict" with system fonts. Nothing else has changed but the installation of Tiger.
Hope someone can help me. The fonts in question were used in freelance work and I'll need them again soon.
    Thanks.

  • Font conflicts + fontbook

i've just installed OS X 4.6 and now have a huge number of fonts that will not load because they "conflict" with fonts in my system folder. i've removed excess fonts from the system font folder and deleted the cache folders as recommended on the extensis suitcase site but this does not help. is it my version of suitcase? (10.2.1) or is there something else i can do to resolve these conflicts?
also, is it possible to just use the fontbook that comes with OX X to manage my fonts? (i have a few hundred fonts - don't know if this system is robust enough)

    Thank you, Kappy and Tom:
I tried the Preview Repertoire command and it showed that the fonts did, indeed, have the full Latin complement of characters. It's just that only the Cyrillic/Hebrew/Arabic/Gujarati/Mandarin selections are showing up in some fonts' preview panes: particularly those fonts with the suffix "Pro" in the title (Myriad Pro, and so on).
    How strange.

  • MacBook Pro running slow if at all and font conflicts

My MacBook Pro is really not responding and I keep getting pop ups that say there is a conflict with a font file.  I was just on it on Sunday morning and it worked just fine.  Later that evening these font conflicts appeared, but I hadn't done anything crazy for them to pop up.  Please help..

    Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select
              File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

  • Problems With User Account? Try Resolving Font Conflicts!

After installing SL as an upgrade, one of my user accounts could not install software, switch to the other account, or do anything where the system would ask for the account password.
I tried resolving this by doing several things like remove all other language keyboards, deleting all files in the user/library/preferences folder, removing the user/lib/pref/byhost files, and the standard repair permisssions, etc.
I then remembered a message which said something about font conflict when first logging into that user account after the SL upgrade.
So, I went into Font Book and noticed that most of the fonts in the user category had the yellow triangle indicating duplicate copies of those fonts.
I resolved it by deleting all fonts in the user/library/font file. Those fonts were available in the computer anyway so I hope I'm not missing anything. Even still, a missing font is better than the alternative of not being able to install software and make other admin changes from the account.
    I hope this helps.

I have a similar issue with both my user accounts.
Spent about 3 hours with Apple customer support and still have the issue with installing updates and everything requiering authentication.
I noticed no conflict message as you did though...

  • Using Linotype Fonts Gold Makes system fonts showing improperly

    Hi Macomunity,
Sometimes I do graphic design, so I'm in the need of having thousand of fonts installed in my system but, when Linotype Fonts Gold Collection is installed, some of my system fonts are wrongly displayed. For example, the preview pane (where you can preview documents) shows symbols instead redeable fonts, also, some webpages are not properly displayed, the same when previewing PDF's. I found erasing all the Linotype Fonts solves the problem, but I need those fonts because I do graphic design. I can imagine there is some kind of conflict between system fonts and Linotype fonts. I install the new fonts in the USERS folder in order to avoid conflicts, or that's what I think at the least.
I would appreciate your help for this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ø3

Wow mate, your reply seems to be the master key of the problem. I don't tink putting an outgoing link should bother the Macommunity, I mean, the goal is supporting people, not making tribes lol Which in fact, I don't like the Mac Ads because it feels superiority over the others faliure and that's not genuine superiority, nor something beyond materialism. Apple should be even more spiritual and transcend. Also, laughing of others OS faliures is like laughing at people with mental problems. However, I laugh of Windows too. Anyway, quite btw today haha...
Well... Here is a reply of a guy which says: "I run my system with ALL the fonts in the System folder, because I want all
users on this box to be able to use all the fonts. I have nothing in the
User font folders, because I do not want my documents changing appearance
depending on who opens them". This explains quite a bit the problem. And this app solves exactly the problem I'm having: http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/fontfinagler/ There is an image file where you can see the problem I'm, having. I also tryed deleting the font cache, but the problem still active. Will see what happens now.
    Very helpful!!!
    Thanks!!!

  • Font conflict with Mac OS

    Hi there
I hope this is relevant to this forum…
I'm having trouble with a version of Helvetica that seems to be conflicting with the Mac system fonts. So, the client sent us a packaged document with the fonts and all but we can't get them activated and recognised in InDesign. I suspect it's to do with a Suitcase / Mac OS conflict and not an InDesign problem, but I'm not sure where to look for help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Sorry, things are pretty chaotic so I'll need a little more time to work through and figure it out, but that link looks like it'll be well worth reading through. The problem is happening on a colleagues computer, so I'm not 100 percent sure about software versions etc., but I can see how knowing that would be helpful.
So, the saga continues on Monday…
    I appreciate your help!

  • HT2509 system fonts only showing up

I have no idea what's happening - my system fonts are the only thing that shows up in my CS5 applications.  All my fonts are sitting in the library/users folder and appear just fine in fontbook.  I've now been unable to work for hours and near tears...please help!

  • Turn Off options "Rely on system fonts only;"

I'm trying to figure out why PageMaker keeps running into a wall when trying to export a pdf.  I continue to get the error message: "Adobe PDF Settings" turn off the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts."  I've searched through all the settings I can find in PageMaker and I don't see a single one called "Rely on system fonts...".  I've tried going into Devices and Printers in Windows 7 and there is no Adobe PDF printer listed despite the fact that the latest Adobe Masters Collection is installed along with Acrobat Reader.  Therefore I don't get where this setting is suppose to be.  Can anyone help me out here?

Re: the million complaints, no--I'm sure there aren't a million lodged. But I'm sure we could document 50,000 complaints about failed plugins, bloated software, too frequent updates, strange error messages on load, features that switch on/off. Just with Acrobat. Probably just on the Adobe board alone. Like polling, I think you could project out to a million from that--because "I haven't heard a million suggestions" doesn't mean there aren't a million customers grinding their teeth with a billion instances of failure.
Re: the upgrade cycle, of course companies like you to upgrade. But that doesn't excuse them from adding new features/tweaks while grandfathering in bugs. Like the bug discussed here, which actually has nothing to do with PageMaker. Because it's the same one discussed here in 2009: http://forums.adobe.com/message/1880784. And it's the same one I'm experiencing now with Adobe Acrobat XI Pro.
And the issue for me (and in the 2009 post) is a conflict between Acrobat and the Calibri font--which is the default font for Word since 2007. (All Ben needed to do was Google the error message posted by this poor ******* who's stuck using PageMaker--he may have even found this post: http://blog.rockymountaintraining.com/?p=2551.)
Six years later, here this bug still is. A bug that is pure Adobe--based on how Adobe products interact with the operating system. I cringe at how many PDFs I've sent out to clients that included unusable links (it would be nice to be as confident as you are that not hearing complaints means there haven't been any).
And a person cannot upgrade out of this kind of bug without upgrading out of Adobe.

  • Trouble paring down my system fonts

I'm trying to take the Helvetica dfont out of System/Library/Fonts, since it conflicts with other Helveticas in my user folder. When I do this, I get an alert that it's a font necessary to display onscreen text, and that it has been restored. Can anyone tell me a workaround for this "feature"? I'm actually following an old CreativePro help sheet in pruning down my system fonts, but as it's from '07, it may be an obsolete, unworkable procedure.
Thanks to any helpful smart people.
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
You can pare the fonts on your system down my article, Font Management in OS X.
As you've already discovered, you can't just remove certain fonts. They are duplicated in the deeply buried ProtectedFonts folder. That's where the restored font(s) come from.
However, you are also in the situation where your work requires you to use Type 1 PostScript fonts, which the Apple supplied .dfonts conflict with. The only solution is to remove the Apple versions so you can activate your preferred fonts since you cannot in any way override them. See section 5 of the article linked to above.
The article does state this, but it's worth repeating. Copy the Apple fonts to another location before removing them from the two System folder locations. Use your font manager then to control which Helvetica fonts are on.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • After removing system fonts and reinstalling fonts, FireFox will not start

After removing system fonts and reinstalling fonts, FireFox will not start! When I start FireFox the "Mozilla Crash Reporter" opens as if FF just crashed??? I don't see any records in event viewer. I am using FF v3.6.3 on a Windows 7 box. I tried uninstalling 3.6.3 and installing 3.0.18 and had the same problem!
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== After a uninstalled all fonts including system fonts and then reinstalling system fonts. ==

    Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/4.0; GTB6.4; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; AskTB5.5)

The files with submitted crash report ids are inside the ''submitted '' directory, from the directory you found the LastCrash.txt timestamp file.
The file names will begin with '''bp-'''
There might be more information from the crash report, but it might just tell us you are crashing the first time Firefox tries to use a font.
One thing I suppose you could do is select only those fonts you've got in Tools -> Options -> Content -> Fonts and Colors -> Advanced and then uncheck the '''Allow pages to use their own fonts''' option.
    See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Options+window+-+Content+panel#Fonts_Dialog
To be honest, I can't find anything on this Netscape Font Navigator and it sounds highly dubious.

  • How do i make system fonts look better?

i am attempting to use univers, which is a system font and so exports as an image. i am using it at a larger size. when i preview in browser, it looks choppy. is there a way to make these system fonts less so, closer to the regular look of web safe fonts? thank you.

The short answer is set an opaque background fill on the text frame (it can be a solid color, gradient or background image).
When the browser or OS is drawing live text, it has the benefit of knowing the exact color of every pixel that will be behind the edges of the text and it uses this knowledge to adjust the colors of the edges of the text to smooth the appearance—a process called anti-aliasing.
When Muse is creating an image for a System Font in a text frame with a no fill (or a semi-transparent fill), Muse can't know with certainty exactly what colors will be behind the text. Therefore Muse uses a "grayscale" version of anti-aliasing. Grayscale anti-aliasing provides a better appearance than the hard stair steps of no anti-aliasing, but the end result is inferior to the color anti-aliasing that's possible when the background pixel colors are known and opaque.

  • Setting for "Rely on system fonts" does not work

    Hello,
Some time ago I wrote a VBA function that would print a worksheet to pdf. It worked great. I reformatted my system, and now the code no longer works. When I run the routine, I receive the error message, "When you create a PostScript file, you must reply on system fonts and use document fonts. Please go to the printer properties, 'Adobe PDF Settings' page and turn OFF the option 'Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts."
I have changed this setting within the Adobe printer setting in Excel, I have changed it in both the 'Printing Preferences" and "Printer Properties" with the Devices and Printers Windows dialog, and I have confirmed that it is turned off in the binary registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\DevModePerUser\Adobe PDF". Also, I have applied the Acrobat 9.4.2 patch. Yet still I get the message when my code is executed....
There were a few changes between my system from before my reformatting. The common items were Windows7 64-bit, Adobe Acrobat 9. The changes were that I went from Microsoft Office 2010 64-bit to Office 2010 32-bit. Windows 7 SP1 is now installed. Also, both Acrobat and Office are installed on my internal "Data" drive, rather than the "C" drive where my operating system is installed.
Although I do not see an issue with code, since it worked for months, I have included it below (the printing code is at the end). Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee834871(office.11).aspx for details. Basically, I am now using the VBA ExportAsFixedFormat method, rather than Distiller. Hope this helps.
