System Fonts Problem

I recently purchased a huge font library from Adobe and decided to delete all previous fonts in all locations (i know i shouldnt) I planned to replace them all with the main library i just bought.
But now i got problems booting up, the system loads but the top apple bar hides/unhides forever with corrupt fonts. I have tried networking from a pc but i can only access home directory not system. Im a bit stuck as i just moved out to Cyprus over Christmas and my desktop G4 is in UK and i just got my iBook G4 laptop. I cant format it because i dont have all the main software disks with me so my iBook would be useless.
Is there a way i can boot up from a cd? I know there is tech-tool pro etc but i dont have them. I tried re-installing system again with my original 10.3 cd's but it wont let me install over the previous system as i have updated it to 10.3.9 and i dont have enough HD space to install a clean copy.
Anyone please able to help? I think im pretty stuck without another mac to network to. Or is it possible to restore my trash within command line at boot? As all the fonts are still in my trash i just need to get them back into the system.

Wow,
You do have a problem. It is possible to do this from command line but way beyond what I could ever tell you how to do.
As the link that Ali posted, you now know what to put where but have no way to do it.
Place this post in the Unix section of the forum with a title like
"Need command line help. Desperate!!!"
Here is the forum

In the future, make a boot disk for such problems and always have it with you. A boot disk is a cd that allows boot of your computer and gives you a primitive but funcional finder. With it you could boot your laptop (it might take half an hour), move the fonts from the trash and put them back where you want.

  • Strange system font problem

    Hello,
I have the following problem for 2 days now:
    http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/1462/bild1.png
I did not install anything. I tried to delete font caches but it did not help.
I re-installed the system but that did not change anything. After resetting the PRAM the problem was solved. At least for some hours, but now the problem appeared again.
When I do a reboot, strange white lines appear over the grey background and the Apple Logo, then the screen turns blue, the cursor consists of white lines too and nothing more happens. After several tries to reboot the Mac is running again, but the font problem still exists.
First I thought of a graphic card problem, but it seems that this font problem only concerns system prefernces and system applications.
I have no idea what to do now, so please help me.

    Hi "Apfelkrautsalami"
Font caching information is stored on a per-user basis in
    /private/var/folders
I have no idea if it'll help, but you could try this:
    - Open a Terminal and do
    *sudo rm -rf -- /private/var/folders/??*
    - Restart your machine
(Note 1: The '--' prevents rm to think that folders like '-5' are options)
(Note 2: The '??' will match any two-letter directory. I didn't want to say '*')

  • Wine: system font problem

    Hello all,
I'm trying to use wine but the system font (e.g. the font used by the menu) is *very* ugly.
Is there a way I can change that?
    Thanks,

Copy a truetype font to the .../windows/fonts dir in ~/.wine, like arial.ttf, verdana or tahoma.

  • InDesign CS6 - fonts problems (Document fonts fight with system installed fonts, "font incomplete")

    hello
First, Indesign function to automatically open fonts from "Document fonts" folder is fantastic, quasy font manager. BUT, fonts is available ONLY for THAT indesign document, no other application can use it, even from CS6 suite. This is probably the most stupid decision about how this function must work. IDEALLY, fonts will be available for ALL application inside CS package until indd doc is closed. If I need some font for editing links in photoshop, illustrator I need to install them. This workflow have wrong concept.
We now have problem, sorry Indesign have problem. Example, I need type1 font mt-symbol for mathtype AND for Indesign. This font is installed in c:\windows\fonts folder. Everything work fine. When I make package from Indesign and reopen indesign indd document inside package, Indesign report that mt-symbol IS INCOMPLETE. WHY, BECAUSE CONCURENT FONTS from both C:\windows\fonts folder AND FROM "Document fonts" folder. If I rename "Document fonts" folder, Indesign open font only from system and everything work properly.
THIS IS BIG PROBLEM, fonts circles around workflow/folders and always will be duplicates in "document fonts" and system\fonts folder because different application need same fonts.
    Any solution?

Another problem with the Document Fonts folder that we just noticed: in CS5, you could place Windows Type 1 fonts (.pfm and .pfb) into the Document Fonts folder on a Mac and InDesign would activate them.
This no longer works in CS6. (Bug report filed.)
Huge bummer, as this was a great timesaver and workaround in a high-production prepress environment when working with old Windows files. Hopefully this was not an intentional change and will be restored in a later bugfix release, or at worst in CS7.

  • Problem with system font

Suddenly my InDesign "Control" menu is not showing the "degrees" sign (°) any more, but is showing the micron (µ) symbol instead. I wonder what I have done to make this happen? I have tried clearing the font cache, restarting, etc but it does not help. I'm wondering if I inadvertently removed a system font, but can't figure out which one it might be. Can anyone help?

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select
              File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

  • MAJOR FONT PROBLEM - GREEK FONTS - GREEK SYSTEM

    Dear All
I own a G4 purchased from a local Apple Authorized reseller for greece Rainbow computers in order to be able to use Greek fonts. Recently upgraded to OSX Version 10.4.3
However I'm facing major font problems in applications such as Adobe Software i.e CS2
Greek fonts that actually work are very limited. For example in Illustrator only Myriad Pro and Lucida Grande function properly.
In Macromedia Freehand although a few more greek fonts work, they either disappear or become scrambled when I attempt to "Convert them to curves"!
This only applies to OSX Tiger. Panther seemed to be working fine for this, in Freehand.
I work as a graphic designer and it is very frustrating when I'm only limited to very few greek fonts even on a GREEK SYSTEM!!!
By the way: I tried all suggested methods on the forum such as: Greek keyboard layouts, verifying permissions, switching to System Greek Language, reinstalling Illustrator etc..
Is there anything else that i can do?
    Pls help.. !

I own a G4 purchased from a local Apple Authorized
reseller for greece Rainbow computers in order to be
    able to use Greek fonts.
Generally speaking, for problems with Rainbow's stuff you need to consult Rainbow. Apple itself does not produce a localized Greek system or the special add-ons that Rainbow provides to let you use non-Unicode Greek with older apps.
However I'm facing major font problems in
applications such as Adobe Software i.e CS2
Greek fonts that actually work are very limited. For
example in Illustrator only Myriad Pro and Lucida
    Grande function properly.
For an app like this you probably need to use Unicode Greek fonts. Those that come with Tiger are Lucida Grande, Helvetica, and Times. If you have MS Office 2004, you can also use Arial and Times New Roman and maybe Verdana from that app. Plus modern Adobe fonts like Myriad or Minion Pro. I suspect that legacy non-Unicode fonts will not work.
In Macromedia Freehand although a few more greek
fonts work, they either disappear or become scrambled
when I attempt to "Convert them to curves"!
I think Freehand is non-Uncode and probably needs the older fonts.
For problems with Adobe and Macromedia apps, you might also want to ask in their forums:

  • Problems with installing system fonts on the PC version of Muse?

I have created a site in Muse and everything is fine when the file is opened on my mac where it was created.
My customer has brought a muse subscription as they wanted to maintain it in house, but they are on a PC. Muse was purchased and installed on the PC ok.
I have now given them the Muse file and it opens up ok in the PC Muse version apart from copy in Myriad Pro Bold (I assume as it's not a standard system font, it uses a substitute). The body copy displays ok as it's just Myriad Pro and that seems to be installed as system font already.
The customer purchased Myriad Pro Bold font and installed the font to their fonts library on the PC (WINDOWS 7), but Muse will still not recognise it when the Muse file opens and it also doesn't appear in the systems fonts list in Muse?
It appears in Word, which is why we couldn't figure out why it wouldn't at least appear in the system fonts section in Muse?

With the current release of Muse fonts are listed differently on Mac and Windows (due to the fact the underlying operating systems enumerate fonts differently).
On the Mac Myriad Pro Bold is listed as such in the font menu. On Windows Myriad Pro Bold is accessed by selecting "Myriad Pro" from the menu then using the "Bold" icon button in the Control panel or Text panel to apply bold. This is something we're actively working on changing, but for now it means a Muse site file that's taken from Mac to Windows (or vice versa) is likely to need to have the bold and italic versions of the fonts re-applied. The easiest way to do this is to use Paragraph styles and or Character styles to format the text in your site, then redefine the individual styles to accomplish the font change.
A major inconvenience in a cross platform workflow and not the way it should work, I agree. We're actively working on it.

  • After removing system fonts and reinstalling fonts, FireFox will not start

After removing system fonts and reinstalling fonts, FireFox will not start! When I start FireFox the "Mozilla Crash Reporter" opens as if FF just crashed??? I don't see any records in event viewer. I am using FF v3.6.3 on a Windows 7 box. I tried uninstalling 3.6.3 and installing 3.0.18 and had the same problem!
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== After a uninstalled all fonts including system fonts and then reinstalling system fonts. ==
    == User Agent ==
    Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/4.0; GTB6.4; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; AskTB5.5)

The files with submitted crash report ids are inside the ''submitted '' directory, from the directory you found the LastCrash.txt timestamp file.
The file names will begin with '''bp-'''
There might be more information from the crash report, but it might just tell us you are crashing the first time Firefox tries to use a font.
One thing I suppose you could do is select only those fonts you've got in Tools -> Options -> Content -> Fonts and Colors -> Advanced and then uncheck the '''Allow pages to use their own fonts''' option.
    See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Options+window+-+Content+panel#Fonts_Dialog
To be honest, I can't find anything on this Netscape Font Navigator and it sounds highly dubious.

  • Setting for "Rely on system fonts" does not work

    Hello,
Some time ago I wrote a VBA function that would print a worksheet to pdf. It worked great. I reformatted my system, and now the code no longer works. When I run the routine, I receive the error message, "When you create a PostScript file, you must reply on system fonts and use document fonts. Please go to the printer properties, 'Adobe PDF Settings' page and turn OFF the option 'Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts."
I have changed this setting within the Adobe printer setting in Excel, I have changed it in both the 'Printing Preferences" and "Printer Properties" with the Devices and Printers Windows dialog, and I have confirmed that it is turned off in the binary registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\DevModePerUser\Adobe PDF". Also, I have applied the Acrobat 9.4.2 patch. Yet still I get the message when my code is executed....
There were a few changes between my system from before my reformatting. The common items were Windows7 64-bit, Adobe Acrobat 9. The changes were that I went from Microsoft Office 2010 64-bit to Office 2010 32-bit. Windows 7 SP1 is now installed. Also, both Acrobat and Office are installed on my internal "Data" drive, rather than the "C" drive where my operating system is installed.
Although I do not see an issue with code, since it worked for months, I have included it below (the printing code is at the end). Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

  • How do I remove dozens of "protected system" fonts from my computer?

There are dozens of foreign language fonts installed on my system, (how they got there, I don't know, but I suspect the Cloud programs installed them at some time or another) and all they do is clutter up the selection list when I try to select a font to use. (No, the "hide foreign language" tool in Windows doesn't fix the problem.) I went to my Windows 7 control panel Fonts page and selected all the fonts I wanted to remove and hit Delete. Fine for some, but I kept getting a warning that the font I was trying to remove was a "protected system" font and could not be removed. Horse manure! I don't need them, I don't want them, and I want them removed from my system. So, how do I get these fonts "un-protected" so I can delete them forever from my computer??

Thanks for the link. It appears that the problem is with Windows, and not something the Cloud did to my computer after all. From what I can tell, people have been upset about this since sometime in 2009, and the only way to remedy it is to edit the registry and/or change the ownership of the files and grant administrator permissions to myself (somehow even more than I already have). It WOULD be nice if Adobe at least found a way to comply with MS's file hiding scheme so Photoshop and Dreamweaver and InDesign would not show all of the unneeded, unwanted, and unnecessary foreign language fonts that MS won't let us mere users delete. Thanks for the help, anyway.

  • HT1338 Font Problems with Snow Leopard

I'm having font problems after updating to Snow Leopard.  It seems to have problems with spacing the fonts properly and reading some fonts properly in Page and Keynote.  Any suggestions of how to fix it?

    Dear Kurt,
in bigger companies thinks come slow :-)  Actually we are switching from 10.4.11 with Quark 6.52 and FontReserve to 10.6.8 with Adobe CS5 and FontBook.
And as you may guess we're running directly into the HelveticaNeue problem.
We cleaned up the system fonts so that only the absolutly needed are in /Sys/Lib/Fonts/ and all other fonts (from MacOS and our own) are in /Lib/Fonts/ where they are in folders for better handling.
The number of additional fonts were radically stripped down to the REALLY needed (about 70 fonts with their families).
We removed the protected fonts and replaced Helvetica, HelveticaNeue, Times, Symbol and ZapfDingbats with PS Type1 fonts.
Our goal was to have no font conflicts to keep our users save. In addition we put fonts in predefinded collections to switch them on/off with an AppleScript that picks the collection name.
And from here it went fancy: The Apple apps are working fine but external app like Adobe CS5 and MS Office only see the fonts in /Sys/Lib/Fonts/.
When we put the HelveticaNeue.dfont back (no matter if it's in the system or at ~/Lib/Fonts/) the other apps also get all installed fonts. We found out that this works even if the HelveticaNeue.dfont is deactivated.
Unfortunately this brings up two problems:
The HelveticaNeue.dfont can't be put to a font collection without taking the corresponding font from the Type1 font with it, so it's more difficult to handle with the AppleScript (we have to pick the exact single name).
The second is that if something goes wrong and all fonts are switched to active we have a font conflict and the possibility that the dfont is used in documents.
I think I have read all (ok, many :-) of your posts about the Helvetica problem in 10.6 as well as your really great document about font handling in OS X.
But I wasn't able to get it to work.
Do you have the one big hint for me???
    Thanks and best regards...      Udo

  • Acrobat X Pro does not recognize system font

I scanned a document to pdf, opened it in Acrobat X Pro and then applies OCR to the image by clicking Edit in the OCR dialogue and chose ClearScan. I then went to edit the text, but when I clicked on a selection, a TouchUp dialogue box popped up stating, “All or part of the selection has no available system font. You cannot add or delete text using the currently selected font.”  The font used in the document was Arial 10 pt. Does Acrobat not recognize that font? Is there any way to edit this pdf's text?

I still haven't got a sense of what exactly you are after, since you are not only talking about settings with visible OCRd text. But my results partly support yours, partly not. My tests were with Acrobat X, your mileage may vary.
OCR with searchable image... the image contained standard fonts, which I could freely edit. No problem, except of course that the results didn't change on screen. I could also correct OCR suspects, which is the editing Adobe are expecting you to do.
OCR with cleartext... the image contained generated fonts, which I couldn't change. I don't see this as a security thing, rather that Acrobat has generated synthetic fonts which match the exact appearance of the scan, and has no idea what the original font was. I can't edit these, because I don't have the font. (If it let me edit them I suspect it would fail horribly, because the generated font will only contain the letters it believes to be there, not other ones you might need). I can, however, select the text and change the font, then edit the results. There were no OCR suspects, which I find a little odd for the same original, but the OCR was indeed more accurate.
By the way, I may not have made this comment: editing PDFs is sometimes possible, but it should always be thought of as a desperate last resort. Just be happy the few times you can use it, don't expect much or anything, and you won't be disappointed. If you want to edit scanned text (as opposed to correct OCR) don't scan to PDF.

  • Typographic & Font Problem on Pdf's

    Hello
Im a amateur writer and am kinda writing stuff of fiction. Im very much in to this stuff and i collect lots of medias. Recently i learned that my favorite publisher - white wolf - does provide books online. So i went and bought couple of them and saw what they have done with pdfs.
I was amazed to see all those visuals that you go through on paperbacks can be brought to pdf format and still ,text can be choosen out of them.
So i was trying to do the same. I downloaded Acrobat and Photoshop from here while back and tried some pdfing myself.
Im creating a visual on photoshop. And Add text on it. And after that i save it as pdf.
When i open it, i find some text are choosable by mouse while some are simply merged to the back ground. And i have to say, this even happens on fonts such as Arial and Verdena. I did try to merge all visiuals except of texts to see if , too much layers were making this , but alas, i still had the same problem.
Also, in photoshops text tool, there are many ,very good options. You can strike them you can small cap them and stuff. But when they are converted to pdf , all these effects dissapear and a regular font appears.
Why this might be the case as well as is Photoshop is the wrong way to achieve those pdfs thats like Whitewolfs.
When i looked through it, i came to realize there are few "possible" reasons why this is happening.
    So bottom line is this
    1) is Photoshop is a sufficient tool to create good pdfs (if not, which program would you suggest)
    2) Typographic effects cannot be imported to Pdfs? if so how?
    3) Why some fonts get to be merged while some fonts simply would not?
    4) last but not least, would all these be because my photoshop is on trial
    period?!
    ---Edit---
I gotto add these infos. Win Xp Sp3 Photoshop cs4 Acrobat 9 (both trial)
    ---Edit---

I have never used QuickBooks (I use an accountant because I really don't understand "accounting" and tax returns and could get myself into huge trouble VERY quickly!) but I believe that there have been conflicts reported between QB (or was it Quicken?) and Adobe apps. in the past.
Which font were you trying to use?
Perhaps you have to stick with regular "System" fonts that are common to both platforms (such as Arial) when using QB?
And do you have to set your choice of a language in QB's prefs.?

I have found this reference on a search of oracle:
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/bi.1012/b14048/pbr_trouble.htm
Section D1.11 says this is a know problem and to copy one registry entry to another, however, this entry does not exist on the Windows 2003 server this is running on.
    Any ideas?
D.1.11 Printing and Font Errors When Using In-process Server
The in-process server does not recognize the default printer of a user currently logged on to Windows. This is because the service that runs the in-process server is logged on as the Local System.
    Problem
    Any of the following:
    * Printing to default printer fails with the REP_3002 error. For example, the following command:
    http://myrepsrvr.us.oracle.com:7777/reports/rwservlet?report=myrep.rdf&destype=printer&desformat=html
results in the following error: Error:"REP-3002: Error initializing printer. Please make sure a printer is installed."
    * Deploying reports containing Oracle6i Graphics (OGD) graphics causes Reports Server to stop responding.
    * Font alignment problems in a PDF file output from an in-process server.
    Solution
To work around all these issues:
    1. Open the Windows registry using a registry editor (for example, regedit.exe). Create a backup of the registry before you edit it.
    2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Windows
    3. Copy the string value of Device for this key. For example: \\MOWGLI\sierra,winspool,Ne02:
    4. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Windows
    5. Paste the Device value copied from HKEY_CURRENT_USER (the string value of Device for this key will be empty).
