System Freeze after Waking from Sleep

Hi,
I have seen a few other posts out there with similar issues however mine is a little different. I have been noticing a few oddities since updating to Mac OS X.5, and finally X.5.1. The first challenge I noticed was that my machine does not go to sleep all of the time now, and it might be because I have a HD plugged in at night for Time Machine, but I am not sure because I seem to remember it doing this before.
Secondly I have noticed that when it would fall asleep, and then I would wake it up it would take some time before I gained control of the track pad and the keyboard. I chalked it up to the OS doing what it needed to do to get the machine ready. The times seemed to vary and it didn't happen all of the time.
However this last time I opened the machine and it gave me the desktop, and an iCal alert but the Finder was the fore most application. I waited but never gained control of the input devices and was forced to restart the machine.
I was wondering if anyone else had seen this or has any ideas of what might help.
Thanks
Patrick

A PMU reset might help.
Sounds like you should try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk also.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

  • After upgrading to Tiger, freeze after waking from sleep on PM G4

My experience with Tiger in the past week as not been great. The reason I upgraded was to get iSync 2.1, so that my Moto E815 phone could be sync'd with my OSX AddresBook and iCal. This wasn't possible with the latest version of Panther.
So, I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.3, and now my G4 freezes immediately after waking from sleep. After pressing the 'return' key to wake the computer, the G4 sends a signal to wake the monitor, but on top of the screen saver is a black text box which states there was a problem I must press (and hold) the power button to restart the Mac. It's written in four languages.
When I installed Tiger, I used the 'archive' option.
My computer is a bit of a FrankenMac: Originally a G4/350 with AGP, upgraded with a Sonnet 1GHz G4 processor card, 1.12GB RAM, a 160GB HDD, an nVidia GeForce3 64MB AGP video card, Samsung DVD/CR-RW drive (Patchburn3) and a Belkin PCI card with 2 additional Firewire ports and 3 additional USB 2.0 ports. When I performed the upgrade, I had the keyboard and mouse plugged into the case USB 1.1 ports, a Logitech Notebook Pro USB camera plugged into the other case USB 1.1 port, and a D-Link BT120 USB->BT adapter plugged into one of the three USB 2.0 ports on the Belkin PCI card.
When I check the Console logs after the rebooting, I see a kernal panic in the panic.log. Apple has received this a number of times from me in the past week as I keep sending them 'talkback' logs after the fact.
I also see an error in the system.log which may reveal what is going on:

I suspect the problem where the USB devices are started, because I had that Bluetooth adapter plugged in at the time of the upgrade. I'm speaking of the lines in the log which start with 'USBF'. The keyboard and mouse are useless when the black screen shows up after waking from sleep.
I've tried some of the suggestions I've found for the iBook 'wake from sleep' postings on macfixit.com and here - resetting NVRAM and removing a few of the .plist files. This didn't seem to help.
I would greatly appreciate help in resolving this issue. I've been a Mac owner since the original Macintosh (it's still in my house) and am frustrated that this is the first problem I've encountered.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks. In fact I had bought a new keyboard and mouse (Macally) and sure enough, if I unplug it before it reboots, the CD drive door stays closed and I can boot from a CD! I did not try any of the other stuff. Is there any way to get it to stop this? Why does a USB peripheral cause the CD to eject anyway? Would love to know!

  • Freeze after waking from sleep mode on MBP retina

After waking from sleep mode my MBP retina freezes for 3-5 seconds. Mouse and touchpad don't work. I wonder if it's mountain lion problem or hardware problem. Anyone faced this?

Just got a brand new model and OS X 10.8.2 (12C3012) and face the same issue, almost everytime it sleeps for too long. This is not a 3rd type SDD, this is a standard Apple SSD. I turned off the BT, I removed the almost every option from the battery saver mode. The current test is to disable the power nap - I will let you all know the result in a few hours.

  • Freeze after waking from sleep

hi, it's been happening only in the past 3 days.
my mac pro is less than a month old.
3 gig ram, dual 2.66mhz processor, 120G hd with more of a third free disk space.
this's what happens: if the computer is in sleep mode, and if after few hours i wake it back up, it freezes.
for the first 10 seconds, the computer apparently works fine, but after that the curson stops responding, as well as all apps.
i can't quit applications, or esc...
all i can do is to powerboot it again.
i've run disk utility and verified disk and repaired permissions.
as it is now all is in check.
can you please let me know what i can do?
on my other systems i used to run Cocktail, but i haven't installed it or run on this intel machine yet, not to screw things up.
can anyone tell me what i should do for this freeze issue, and what's the best system management utility for intel machines?
    thanks in advance
    milly

Cocktail is not a system management utility, but rather a troubleshooting only utility. Freezes can happen waking from sleep often if there is a third party USB device connected or a PCI adapter to USB that is not familiar with Apple's Energy Saver low power mode. Before proceeding with this experiment, it is important to backup your data*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Dismount (if a volume), and disconnect all third party USB devices and see if it freezes. If it does, make sure the hard disk is less than 85% full (an arbitrary number most have found to be safe for Mac OS X) using my http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html FAQ as a guide. And if it still freezes waking from sleep, repair the directory:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
Cocktail, and other cache cleaning utilities should be avoided unless an obvious cache problem exists. You can use Cocktail also to delete files no other programs will delete, but only after backing up your data, to ensure you don't delete the wrong file.

  • Wifi/System Preferences Freezes After Waking From Sleep Mode.

Every since I installed Mountain Lion, I've had the issue of my MacBook Pro freezing up while it checks for Wifi after waking up from sleep mode. I have to constantly restart my computer. I'm wondering if Apple is aware of this happening on other computers and not just mine.
Also, my laptop is considerably slower since installing the OS update, especially when I turn on my computer.
    - Rog

!!!!!!!!!!!So far only this has worked for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> and UNcheck the box that says "Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible on BOTH the Battery and Power Adaptor tabs.
I had this issue when I first installed Mountion Lion on my Aluminum MB 2008. Thought it was 10.8 so I down graded to 10.7 Lion, issue still happened. But after I applied this setting the issue seemed to go away. Before this I also deleted the old wifi settings in Network Utilities and added the Wifi device, ssid, and wep key again (not using WPA2). I will continue testing through the night and will update once I can determine the issue is gone.
Hopefully this works for others too.

  • 2009 Quad MP freezes after waking from sleep

    Hey again.
I've read numerous reports about the sleep/waking problem but mine seems to be different. I even created a new main admin account to see if some of my preferences (I migrated my user accounts from an iMac over to the new MP) and still having the same issues.
If I let the system go to sleep it will on its own but when I wake it up the keyboard and mouse don't do anything. I even unplugged the mouse/keyboard and plugged them back in and still nothing. I have to hold the power button down to shutdown. Upon restarting everything is fine again.
Now if I put the system to sleep manually it will sleep and wake perfectly!! I know I can work around this by not letting it go to sleep on it's own but why would be wake from sleep one way but not the other?
    Any help welcome.
PS. I have a OWC 1TB FW800 hooked up, Wacom tablet/pen, keyboard and that is it. I have the hard drives set to 'sleep', and only have istat menu bar running. I've tried it with that off and no programs running and still have the same results.

but after I bought this MP it's been headache after headache. (Sleep issues, monitor issues..)
Are you still under warranty? Can you have the machine replaced? I would try to do that... No reason for bad experiences from a brand new machine. No one deserves that and you may just have gotten a machine by nature that is a bit buggy. Granted the dust is still settling about these Macs and how they play out in the real world. But consistent problems like yours, are worth fixing. Getting the Mac replaced would be ideal.
JM is probably right about the driver, I forgot that too. One removes everything except the kernel of trouble in the first place. It's a shot anyway. There could be more going on.

  • Why does my computer keep freezing after waking from "sleeping"?

I'm running Lion (10.7.2) and frequently, not everytime, but often, the computer will freeze about 1-2 min after I've woken it from sleep – there are usually 1-2 applications open and then I can work for about a couple minutes and then it freezes and the only way to resolve it is to power it off w/ the power button and then restart.
I've got a late 2008 15" MacBook Pro, 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM – there is very little on the hard drive, but that seems irrelevant here anyway.
    Thanks for any tips/help!

  • System Crash after waking from sleep

    Hi guys,
Running 10.9.2 on 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, GeForce GTX 775M, 3TB Fusion Drive. No extras added - everything fitted by Apple. Only thing attached is the CD drive via USB, the Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and the ethernet cable.
Today I have had 5 or 6 system crashes. What happens is that the spinning beach ball kicks off and nothing will work except holding the power to restart the machine.
I think that each time it has happened has been after the machine wakes from sleep and doesn't always happen immediately but after a few minutes or so.
I have run Disk Utility on startup to Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk. I have reset PRAM etc.
As far as I know nothing has been installed from before, other than the Epson Printer Drivers 2.1.7 update combo from the Apple Site to get an old scanner to work. Didn't have problems the day I installed that (yesterday).
One thing I have had probably more so since 10.9.2 is the internet speeds slow down (both WiFi and ethernet). But no problems with the modem / router that I know of and my ISP can find no problems. Interestingly I wonder whether this has also happened from sleep (eg broadband speeds getting slower).
I'm not quite sure where to find any possible error logs or which ones may be useful but any help is much appreciated. Thanks

If anyone else has this problem and maybe to help...
I found that the cause of my system crashes was somewhere within the Epson printer drivers and other associated drivers I downloaded from - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1398. (Epson Printer Drivers v2.17 for OSX).
As you're unable to 'show package contents' on right-click from this downloaded file, I installed the excellent Pacifist and looked at the files within the download listed above. I then manually removed every trace of every file except the one specific to my need (an Epson Perfection 1670 scanner). With those files gone, I haven't had any problems.
So I believe my system crashes were related to a file within the Epson Printer Drivers v2.17 for OSX.

  • Programs freeze after waking from sleep mode

For some reason if I put my MBP into sleep mode (10.6.3), any programs I try to start up will freeze (I would to force quit since nothing opens). Any programs that were open prior to going into sleep mode working fine, unless quit it and then try to restart the program same problem (so if firefox open before sleep placed my laptop in sleep mode then I wake the laptop, firefox works fine. Now if I were to quit firefox after my laptop was turned on from sleep mode then I quit firefox and try to reopen it, then firefox icon just bounces up and down and nothing happens and it freeze and I have to force quit). The only way is for me restart the laptop, but even then its a temp fix.

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

  • Macbook freezing after waking from sleep

My 4 GB RAM macbook freezes for 30 seconds after I wake it from sleep mode. Sometimes it is unresponsive and sometimes the beachball comes up. I have 200 gigs of free space and no login items. The bluetooth wake is also turned off. What is the problem?

I have noticed similar behaviour.  I think it depends on the network activity being carried out when I closed the lid, and maybe it has to wait for something to time out. I don't really know, I'm just guessing.
I have noticed that when it happens, I have to close the lid and watch the light on the front. This will be solidly lit. When it starts "breathing" I can open my MacBook again and it will work ok.

  • System unresponsive after waking from sleep

I've been looking at G4 dual 1.25ghz MDD, which for ages has been impossible to wake from sleep without a hard restart.
Anyway, we've done a complete erase, reformat, re-install 10.4.11 which has cured the problem almost, but not entirely.
The computer now merrily goes to and wakes from sleep, with the display reappearing and the cursor visible and active, but the system is completely unresponsive for about 20 seconds, then it is back to normal. Any attempt to click on a dock icon in that period leads to a bouncing icon, but the application will not launch. After about 10 seconds of this the system will completely stop, except that the cursor will still freely move around the screen.
Checked the ram, zapped PRAM, NVRAM, PRAM battery is not that old and should be ok, but I haven't yet tried with a fresh one, no other USB or FW devices attached, monitor attached by VGA.
    Anyone got any other ideas?

Reset PMU ? Although from what you say, it's doesn't look like a PMU problem.
Could be AppleTalk restarting, or something else that stops when you put the Mac to sleep.
Many MDD users had a similar issue when wakin g from sleep, usually with an ADC monitor, rather than VGA or DVI, requiring the PMU reset as the MDD had to power up the monitor too (not on it's own power supply as it is with DVI / VGA) and it would have trouble doing so.

  • My iMAC often freezes after waking from sleep, or occasionally freezes at random. How do I stop this?

I have 10.6.8 on my iMAC. I have been shutting down my iMAC partly because I often get freezes a few seconds after the mac wakes. The freezes also occur at random. There is seldom any way to shut down the MAC except by pulling the power cord, though very rarely I am able to finally achieve a normal shutdown. I have tried fixing permissions as well starting in Safe Mode, and while these seemed to help at first, they no longer seem to have any affect.
I thought that maybe I got some kind of virus/trojan/etc., but from what I have read here that very likely is not the case.
I have also read here that the issue could be  "hardware."  Does this mean things like my printer or external speaker, or external hardrive? or does it mean the hardware of the computer itself? I have read about a "Hardware Test." Does this "Apple Hardware Test" have a benefit here in figuring out the problem?
Does anyone have any suggestions? I certainly can't keep 'pulling the plug,' and I know now from these discussions that shutting down (vs. sleep) on a regular basis is not best either for the imac. (I am loathe to upgrade to LION until I get this problem resolved, though, interestingly, I seem to see that a number of LION folks have the same or similar problem.)

    FussGus,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
What periherals, especially USB ones, do you have attached to your Mac? Does the problem persist with everything other than the Apple keyboard and mouse disconnected?
Does the problem persist if you Start Up in Safe Mode? If so, check what items are in /Library/StartupItems and /Library/PreferencePanes.
As generic advice for sleep-related issues:
For a Mac OS X with sleep problems (file names and locations are for 10.4.x):
    -- trash /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    -- trash /Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
-- reboot while resetting PRAM (restaqrt while holding down command-option-p-r until you hear three sets of chimes, then release the keys)
While not directly related, since your wakes before freezing, also refer to Computer Will Not Wake From Sleep

  • System clock fails to update after waking from sleep

I've noticed that my new PowerMac G5 Dual-Core 2GHz (running Mac OS X 10.4.3) doesn't update its system clock to the current time after waking from sleep.
When I put it to sleep and then wake it some time later, the Clock in the upper right-hand corner doesn't update to the current time. It still ticks on (second for second) but remains out of sync.
Opening the Date & Time preferences pane will restore the time to the correct setting.
This problem only occurs with sleep and then wake-from-sleep. It doesn't happen when I shut down the machine and then restart it.
Does anybody know if I've got a malfunctioning machine? It's only 1 day old...
Or better still, how do I solve this problem?
    PowerMac G5 Dual-Core 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

No, my Mac is not having trouble contacting the time server. I checked the console log and found no messages related to this.
I am on a broadband always-on connection (recently switched from DSL to cable modem, and the problem occurred under both connections). However, my original post states that the computer loses time only when it is asleep, and I didn't think that my computer could contact the time server when it is asleep. It also loses time when it is off, which I neglected to mention previously. Am I mistaken in thinking that the computer communicates over the network only when it is awake? Since it keeps accurate time when awake (once I've reset it by opening the Date & Time control panel), it seems to me like it IS communicating with the time server without issue.
[And I apologize for misinterpreting your question as a suggestion. I was trying to be polite by thanking you for taking an interest in my issue. I'll watch my semantics more carefully next time.]
    Cheers,
    Katy

  • "Photoshop transparent background" after waking from sleep

Anyone experienced this problem? Photoshop users will be familiar with the terms I'm using to describe this issue...
After waking from sleep, my iMac will display the screen saver -- in this case, "Beach" -- in a frozen state (not moving at all). The photo has a lower opacity, with a checkered background similar to what you'd see in Photoshop when the background is Transparent rather than opague. Clicking on the mouse or keyboard has no effect, but when I turn the power off and then on again, all is back to normal, with the Leopard desktop and Dock back in their normal places.
Is this the system freeze that folks have been talking about?

Ok I am not that fmrealer with Photoshop. But this is what I would do.
    1. Resart my computer.
    2. Call apple or Photoshop.
    3. Re install Photoshop.

Sorry for the huge post.  The lightspeed kext shouldn't be causing problem as we use this program for all mac machines, I also did extensive troubleshooting with it.  I did ask her to stop using the logitech USB device but she said it didn't make a difference, it was a plug and play device, would it still cause this issue without having it plugged in?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
