System Freeze. SSD.TimeMachine. MBP retina 2013

A - Background / System Environment:
I got the new Macbook Pro retina 13" display 2013.
here is the configuration:
3Ghz I7
8Ghz 1600Mhz DDR3
OS X 10.8.4
SSD 500Gb
TRIM support: YES
I created 2 user sessions. 1 user session has been created on the regular basis while,
1 user session is the one I created through timemachine from my previous macbookPro:
     MacBookPro 13" (early 2011)
     Processor: I5Duo 2.3GHz
     Memory: 4Gb RAM
     HDD: 320Gb
     OS: Mountain Lion v10.7.3
B - Problem:
On the MBP2013 retina,
the first user session created under the OS 10.8.4 seems to work just fine,
whereas the user session created with the timeMachine present several issues.
- I alway get a freeze whenever I need to access to the SSD data, as simple as opening the Finder ( it usually takes up to 40seconds )
- If I need to copy/ paste files from external SD card, USB stick ...to the MBP, the beachBall appears, and I wait up to 40 seconds
I 've heard about TRIM that should be enabled or not...
Or is there any patch to download ?
Has anyone encountered the same situation while importing datas with timemachine (from HDD system to SSD system) ?
I 'll be glad if anyone knew what to fill out in the section "C" hereafter ;P
C - Solution :

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

My mbp retina 2013 display went black suddenly. Anyone else having this problem?

Hi, I have the same computer, same model and same problem with the same diagnosis, with no response from Apple for being out of warranty of 4 years, this is a shame!

  • WIFI drops every 1-2 minutes MBP Retina 2013

I've searching this forum for this issue but no solution helped me (deleting network login from keychain, etc)
I hope that I can find useful advice here.
    MBP Retina Early 2013, 2.7 i7, 16 GB, 512 GB.
I've bought it 1 week ago and 4 days after it started dropping connection every few minutes (sometimes it works fine for 0.5-2 hours).
It is so disturbing that I cant evenly use web.
Is it hardware issue or software? And how can I fix it?

Take it back to the store, you have like 90 days of free hand holding and they also check the machine for hardware issues.
Buy AppleCare and a couple of external powered drives, one for TimeMachine and one for a bootable clone.

  • Mavericks & MBP retina resolution change

    Hello
I did a search before writing this, and since I found no posts, I am posting this.
I upgraded my 2012 retina MBP to Mavericks as soon as it came available.
    No problems at all installing.
    But I just noticed this:
on system information, I read under display:
    Built-in Retina Display 3840 x 2400.
As long as I remember before the upgrade of OS X, I used to read 2880 x 1800...
(I set the display to "more space" under System preferences)
    So, is it only me?
I went to check Apple's site of MBP retina (2013's) and it also reads : 2880 x 1800 native resolution...

    Hello
I had a similar problem with Doom 3 and I've found a solution: it's due to the feature "Automatic graphics switching" being active. To prevent this from happening you need to disable it in System Preferences --> Energy Saver and uncheck this option. For further convenience you can install and use the application gfxCardStatus. Anyway, it's weird to have this happening in Doom 3 and have no issue for instance in Quake 4.
    Hope I can helped.

  • MBP Retina: menu bar icons smoothness problem

    Hello everyone,
I recently switched to MBP Retina 2013, this is my first Mac and despite some software problems, I am loving it!
Here's my question/problem: sometimes (did not notice any logic when it happens) my menu bar icons lose their retina smoothness and look bad. Screenshot below shows how it looks. Notifications icon on the right is good, but spotlight and the others very bad, including date & time. Menu bar text items on the left (non icons) look fine.
Does anyone know what's causing this problem and how to fix it?
    Thanks!

Hard to troubleshoot if it does it sometimes.
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • MacBook Pro system freezes - please help!

    Hi there,
I've been experiencing some system freezes with my MBP recently. I have all the most recent software updates installed and there's really no detectable pattern to the freezes. I usually notice it when the screen has been blanked out for a while -- I'll come back, swipe the trackpad, and the screen will turn on, but the screensaver will be stuck in a certain position, and although the cursor will move no applications will respond and I am forced to hard-reboot by holding the power button down. I've checked some of the logs in Console to see if anything has been noted but haven't had any joy so far. I can't think of anything specific to start looking -- any advice will be REALLY helpful. I've searched the forums but haven't found anything that helps.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
Thank your informative post, as it helps us to troubleshoot much quicker!
You didn't indicate that you had tried resetting the SMC, (System Management Controller) .. so go here, read the information first and follow the instructions... that could be the answer.
If after trying this applications still won't launch or respond, post back.

The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
You cant do what you want without removing the internal SSD
Officially, it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage in any Retina Display MacBook Pro model after purchase

  • SSD in MBP 13" Retina Late 2013 doesn't work - Can't boot at all

I have a new MacBook Pro 13" Retina which works flawlessly. It has a factory installed 512 GB SSD, which also works flawlessly. Then I bought basically the same type of 512 GB SSD, 2nd hand but new, which I intended to install in another MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013.
The seller told me it is compatible with the MBP Retina Late 2013, but when installed, the known to be good MBPR doesn't boot. Not from that SSD, not from an attached USD HDD which has two perfectly bootable Mavericks partitions. When pressing the alt-Key on booting, I can however see two partitions on that SSD (Mac OS X 10.8.4 and a Recovery Partition), yet it is not booting at all, thus also doesn't allow me to inspect or treat this SSD with Disk Utility or other tools.
All I get is the grey screen with the striked through circle sign (see attached image). I've tried both, PRAM reset and SMC reset, no change.
Here comes the interesting part: Although both SSD look identical, they have slightly different model and part numbers (see attached image).
Working, factory installed SSD: Model MZ-JPUS512T/0A6. Part No. 665-1805D
    Non-booting, 2nd hand SSD: Model MZ-JPUS512T/0A2. Part No. 665-1805A
Any ideas what’s going on here and how to solve this?

    Excellent point! Mac OS X 10.9.1 doesn’t equal Mac OS X 10.9.1!
Back in the bad old days of Mac OS X Install DVDs, I was aware of the fact that there were different versions of the OS X Installer testing against the Mac ID to make sure that bundled versions get only installed on those Macs which the DVD came with. And the DVD where clearly labeled in that sense.
Now in the days of Internet download and installation from USB sticks, SSD and HDD, one completely forgets about this. On the other hand, with Mavericks being free, I don’t understand the need for such limitations, and not at least the recovery partition allows booting any Mac which supports Mavericks.
When you boot with the alt-Key pressed and you see at least one partition with Mac OS X 10.9.1, one just doesn’t understand why the heck the Mac doesn’t boot. Now I do. Apple would be well advised to simply add a short info line, like „This version of Mac OS X is missing components to boot this Mac. Please re-install from the AppStore using this computer“. It would take out A LOT of guesswork.
Anyhow… I booted the MBPR using the working SSD, installed Mavericks from the AppStore on the external USB HDD, switched the SSDs, booted from the external USD HDD’s now bootable 10.9.1 Recovery Partition, wiped the suspicious non-booting SSD and installed Mavericks. No further problems. (Completely forgot about the CMD-OPT-R Internet Recover Mode keg55 has mentioned…)
    Thanks for the hint!

  • Can I upgrade memory/SSD on late 2013 MBP retina?

I have late 2013 MBP retina, 2.4 ghz, 11,1., basic 4GB and 125GB. I checked with OWC and they yet to have any solutions to upgrade. Am I stuck with this? Wanting to do some video editing and afraid I'll be bogged down.

No. Neither are user-upgradeable in that model. What makes you feel you will be bogged down? If you need more disk space just add an external USB drive. You should have sufficient RAM if you don't try to run far too many applications concurrently for the memory installed.

  • MBP retina + Yosemite + MAGSAFE CONNECTED = freeze and spinning ball!!

    I'm really losing my mind...
Friday I finally installed Yosemite 10.10 on my mbp retina. At the beginning everything was perfect, then new updates like iphoto and imovie started to pop up so I decided to download them. At some point of the download the spinning ball appeared but didn't want to go away, even after 5 minutes. I couldn't use my macbook so I decided to force shut down.
After restarting I could log in, but as soon as I moved the cursor to the dock and clicked on the apps I needed to open (Mail and Chorme) everything froze and the spinning ball appeared again.
    Force shut down again.
The magsafe was connected at all time.
Then I decided to go to the Apple Store to solve the problem. Once I explained the problem to the guy and turned on the macbook in front of him, everything started to work again perfectly.
I looked like a freaking idiot.
He had no explanation, he just told me to use time machine to backup my data and bring the macbook there in case the issue would appear again.
Yes I tried all the possible procedures pressing the keys when the macbook is turned on. (I kept for last the pram reset and smc reset)
    Nothing.
Then this morning I realized the freezing at startup would occur only if the magsafe was connected!!! This is also why at the Apple store there was no problem at startup....no magsafe connected. I tried a few times to use the macbook normally with the battery (even now that I'm writing), and it's working perfectly!! But as soon as I connect the magsafe, go to the dock to open apps or simply click on the google chrome tabs to type in a website, everything starts to freeze again and the spinning ball stays there indefinitely.
I also tried the utility disc (in normal and safe mode). It says everything is ok.
I even tried to delete completely iphoto, imovie and caffeine and to reinstall Yosemite.
I don't want to go to the Apple Store now because it's full of people (iphone 6 just got released here in China).
Could someone help me understand what is the problem??
Thank you for all the help you can provide

Yesterday it started to do the same even with the battery! So it was impossible for me to use it. I went to the apple store...they didn't know what to tell me since the system just got released.
They ran a few tests on my macbook and it showed that it wasn't an hardware issue, it was the software. So they wanted to do a backup of my data (from one of their macbooks) but couldn't because somehow there was a password for Firevault. I never put it!! And it's not the same I always choose for my system.
Result? They had to erase everything (I'm angry because I lost a lot of my work files) and now I'm back to Mavericks 10.9.5 and I have no idea when I'll decide to update again to Yosemite.
Since Steve Jobs passed away Apple is not the same.
My girlfriend has an iphone 5, she installed IOS 8 and everything is slow as ****. Seriously.
It's really disappointing and I (we) don't trust Apple anymore.

  • Startup Disk not there when reinstalling OSX (Early 2013 MBP retina)

I had reinstalled the OSX on my MBP a few times so I am not unfamiliar with the process of rebooting from the boot menu, formatting via the disk utility and then reinstalling either via a backup or from the internet backup (as the retina does not have a dvd drive).
Doing it this time and I did nothing different, however upon entering the disk utility screen, the main disk image simply wasn't there. I was conducting a reinstall of OSX from the internet and had already downloaded the new software, as you have to do when installing from the internet. I then came to the disk utility screen, ready to reformat the hard drive and it simply wasn't there at all. The only image there was the one I had just downloaded ready to install.
Thinking this extremely strange, I reboot the computer and it takes ages, then comes to a screen with a continually flashing folder symbol with a question mark in it. I have left it like this for 30 mins with no change.
So now, I cannot boot normally, and I cannot reinstall a downloaded image on the main SSD because it is not showing at all in the disk utility.
I have plugged in an external hard drive and am currently installing a new image on this to try to check where the main hard drive is once it is up and running, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
As mentioned, it is an early 2013 MBP retina, the warranty is up so cannot take it back to apple.

  • My late 2013 MBP Retina battery gets only about 4 hrs. What might be wrong?

My late 2013 MBP Retina battery gets only about 4 hrs. What might be wrong?

    I found a solution!
Perhaps this is just temporary, but I have my display up and working again.
Although the symptoms are different were a bit different, the solution here worked:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120259/grey-screen-after-login-blue-scr een-of-death-from-cmdr
As I was able to connect to my HD via an external monitor, in the finder, I went to:
    1. Macintosh HD --> System --> Library --> Extensions
    2. From there I moved all of the files that started with ADM and ATI (19 in total for me) to a folder on my desktop. (You will need to enter your admin password for this)
    3. Next was a restart.
    4. Then my display started working again.
    5. After that, I transferred the files back into my Extensions folder.
    6. I then did another restart with my fingers crossed and breath held. It worked.
Also... During the last few days of trying to find a fix, I restored a Mavericks backup to my computer away from Yosemite.
I'm very sure this problem occurred when I put my MBP to sleep, disconnected the power in its sleep, while something was connected to a USB port and unplugging the USB device (for me an iPhone charger) while the MBP was closed.
I hope this helps the next person.

  • How to carbon copy an old hard disk with mountain lion on MBP-retina's SSD

Well the title says it all.
My idea is: Thunderbolt externally my old HDD and boot from it with target disk mode. Here's the first question: shall I first boot normally to initialize the OSX on the new MBPR or it doesn't matter since I am going to overwrite the whole SSD later?
So yeah, let's say i booted using thunderbolt on with my externalized old HDD. Can I use Carbon copy cloner to copy everything exactly to the MBP-retina's SSD?
Are there any risks in this procedure?
    Is it possible even?
Any better and/or tested strategy to do the same thing?
There must be a better way to transfer not only your user files and apps (see migration assistant), but also all drivers, system mods, 3rd-party system preference panes, etc.
    Thanks

This is the closest thing to my query that I have been able to find. I recently installed ML on my late 2011 MBP. I have tons of backups from Lion and I want to continue backing up ML. I have hesitated to do so as I fear that I will not be able to recover my data and settings in the event that I decide to downgrade to Lion. If I was to downgrade back doe Lion; could I use a ML TM backup to recover my files and settings?

  • Freeze after waking from sleep mode on MBP retina

After waking from sleep mode my MBP retina freezes for 3-5 seconds. Mouse and touchpad don't work. I wonder if it's mountain lion problem or hardware problem. Anyone faced this?

Just got a brand new model and OS X 10.8.2 (12C3012) and face the same issue, almost everytime it sleeps for too long. This is not a 3rd type SDD, this is a standard Apple SSD. I turned off the BT, I removed the almost every option from the battery saver mode. The current test is to disable the power nap - I will let you all know the result in a few hours.

  • Difference between late-2012 and early-2013 mbp retina 13"?

I just bought the early-2013 mbp retina from the refurbished section of the mac site.
It seems to be v. difficult to get detailed info on this model. Most web queries about aspects of this model bring up info on the late-2012 model.
Is this some sort of freak model that was a limited run?
One of the main reasons I ask is that I have a 512gb SSD, and I'm looking to replace it with the 768gb SSD module. The SSD module I am looking to buy advertises itself as being compatible with the late-2012, but no mention of early-2013.
The late-2012 and early-2013 share the same model number (A1425), should I assume they carry the same architecture under the hood?
    **Before you reply**
    - Yes, I know I'm not supposed to open the computer, might void the warranty etc.
    - No, I didn't have the option of the 768gb SSD when I bought it, it was already assembled. I got it cheap.
    - Yes, I am aware that SSD upgrade is an expensive option.
    - Yes, I am aware I can store additional data on an external HDD.
    - Yes, I am aware I can boot from a higher capacity external HDD.
    - No, I don't want to know about alternative options, just the one outlined in the original query.
    Thanks.
