System freezes and then will not reboot

About two weeks ago I opened my MacBook Pro, just before a business trip only to find that it would not start, just a grey screen, if I left it long enough then the apple logo appeared and the loading circle, but that is as far as I got. As I was flying to Dubai and that is where I bought it I took it back to the MacStore there. They said that I would have to reinstall the operating system. After two hours attempting this they sent me away with the discs that I had to borrow from them and said I should do it myself. I flew on to Saudi ad attempted the reinstall there. It failed due to a software error. I attempted the process again, with the erase option, same result. A friend used the install disc utilities menu to check the hard drive when I was informed that the hard drive had failed.
I went to what I thought was an authorised Apple dealer CTS (Computer Technology Services of Jeddah and they replaced the hard drive. It worked for about 2 hours and then froze and refused to restart. The computer was quite hot. Once left to cool it would then restart but not until then, but each time I do this the time it runs is less and less. I have replacement batteries from the recall, so that is not the problem, but I only obtained them after the hard drive replacement.
I do not appear to be able to get any support from Apple as they say the computer is out of warranty - I don't understand why as I bought it in May from what I thought was an authorised retailer in Dubai. I live in Iran and there is virtually no support here, just other ex-pats with Macs.
The other problems that I have is that since the change of hard drive all of my music and programs have been de-authorised. The Mac also seems to corrupt programs I keep having to reload them from my back up LaCie hard drive (which fortunately I did a full back up to just before the thing failed.
I cannot even think where to go for help. I am actually thinking of buying a replacement and attempting to replace the original hard drive into it as what ever the problem was it does not appear to have been fixed by the replacement.

Hi Tim! Sorry that you're having so much trouble with your MBP.
I have not had this issue with my MBP but from your discription it sounds like what happened to my G4 - namely the RAM went bad. I installed 3rd party RAM and it worked OK for a few weeks, then the G4 started to balk at starting, not always but most of the time, then finally I could not get pass the grey screen, it just stopped there.
I contacted a friend of mine and he immediately asked if I had an extra RAM in it and told me to remove it then reboot. That proved to be the solution. I didn't think of it because I thought the RAM would be bad from the get-go not go bad over the course of a month or so. Let me know if this might be your case.

  • MSI P67A-G43 (MS-7673) System Freezes and then will NOT Restart

    Hello Everyone,
I was hoping someone out there might know what is going on with my system. My issue began about a week ago when my computer simply froze while in use. After realizing the system was not responding I hit the reset button and tried to restart, however the computer restarted to a black screen (NO words) and went no further. I turned off the power supply to force a shut down, turned it back on and then tried to restart again, only this time the computer went into a cycle where the lights flash, the fans run for 2-3 seconds, but the “all clear” beeps never sound and then everything turns off. The only way to stop the cycle is to cut the power. Because this cycle happened when I first built the computer (as a result of an improperly connected cable) I thought something inside the case might be lose, so I opened it up, removed everything  and then put it back together.
This time when I started the system I got a screen that said “Previous overclocking has failed…” Now I have never tried to overclock my computer, nor do I know how, so I do not understand WHY my computer would give such a message. After this message however, the computer did actually restart and take me to windows, however the computer inevitably freezes again after use, sometimes after only a few seconds, sometimes after a few hours.
Furthermore, once I shut down the computer and try to restart it, it almost always goes into the cycle of trying to restart, but failing. When it does get past the ‘all clear’ beeps I get the failed overclocking message again. I did just discover a “super-charger.exe” MSI application that was trying to run every time I started the computer and I uninstalled the application, I’m not sure if that had something to do with the overclocking or not. I also took out 3 of the 4 memory sticks and I am running on just 1. For the moment (while I write this post) the computer is working but could very well freeze again at any time, though just now it did start up withOUT the overclocking message and went right to windows.
Thanks for taking the time to read through my problem. This issue has been going on for more then a week, ANY help would be VERY much appreciated!

If it is fine with one stick RAM, add the second so that both blue slots are used. If ok, then remove the second stick & replace it with one of the other sticks. If ok, try the last stick. If any of the tests fail with any of the sticks in the second slot, you found the bad one.

  • System froze and now will not reboot

Today, after a fresh install of Windows XP Home and all drivers, I was moving some files on my Windows desktop when the system completely froze (curser would not move keyboard would not react).
I pressed the reset switch and then my system would not post. I only get the long steady beeps. My system does not have the D-bracket installed so I can't get information from that. I have tried clearing the CMOS (without power cord connected and also by removing the battery) but everytime I power up I get no post and the long steady beeps.
    Suggestions anyone?
My latest hardware change was the switch from a BFG 7950GT OC to the eVGA 8800GTS 640. I have been running the 8800GTS for about 6 weeks now and have had no problems other than the system freezing prior to driver install. after the VGA drivers were installed, I had absolutely no problems.
    System specs:
Windows XP Home Service Pack 2
    Cooler Master 600Watt PSU
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo
    3GB Corsair DDR 400
    MSI K8N Neo4 v3
    2x WD 7200 SATA 80GB HDs in RAID-0
    1x WD 7200 SATA 500GB HD
    Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
    eVGA 8800GTS 640Mb

    Found the problem.
Apparently a memory stick decided to die on me. tried the process of elimination starting with one stick of memory in DIMM slot 1 and adding 1 back to the system and rebooting. when I got the error again, I removed all of the sticks and tried the last one that was added in DIMM slot 1. I got the error again with that stick. Luckily the memory I was using was under a lifetime warranty and I should have no issue returning to the vendor.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

  • I can not upgrade the iOS on my phone, nor sync the phone because the process starts with backing up the phone which always hangs up at the backing up stage and then will not allow further progress.

I can not upgrade the iOS on my phone, nor sync the phone because the process starts with backing up the phone which always hangs up at the backing up stage and then will not allow further progress.
And for this I guess that it is the backing up of my Podcasts - which are free downloads that causes the hang up. These are items that I have played and synced before without issues. I am thinking this way because these are Podcasts that I used to play but sundenly would not play on my iPhone. Each time I try to play anyone of them it generates the message - this movie could not be played.
I am scared of atempting a system restore because I guess I may lose my SMS for the past two months. Please approach the solution from this point of view.
    Thanks

It may have something to do with one of your backup files that has been corrupted before.

  • My 27" iMac displays vertical green lines when turned on and then will not boot up

Can anyone tell me why my 27" iMac displays vertical green lines when it is turned on and then will not boot up?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The display or graphic card are damaged. The only thing you can do is to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller to get your computer repaired.
If you use an external display with your Mac, connect it to your computer and see if these lines appear on the external display. If so, it's a graphic card problem

I use 10.3.9 and I have no idea why yahoo mail stopped working today. I have firefox installed on my machine. BTW - firefox is able to serf the web without issues on all of my sites. I often wonder why apple wanted to build a browser, why not just use firefox and contribute to it's development for the mac environment?

  • Firefox will not open a new window for a website when it is supposed to and then will not close properly. I have un-installed and re-installed and problem persists, why? How is it solved?

When I go on to some websites and click on certain things it wants to open a new window to display the information etc.
I.E. On an agency job search site I click to do a detailed job search which should open in a new window, but this will not happen now on my Firefox.
Firefox was working perfectly ok on Saturday 11th September but for some unknown reason has acted up since Sunday.
There have been no Windows updates which could effect this and the laptop is otherwise working perfectly ok.
Nothing has changed from Saturday Night to Sunday Night that I can see.
I have even tried to do a system restore to solve the problem but with no success.

I also have this problem. I cannot open links from a discussion board I frequent nor can I open links from my email. Also after opening my email, I cannot go to any other sites except my home page. I can then go no where else.
When I close Firefox and try to reopen it, it does nothing! I have to bring up the Task Manager and end the Firefox process before I can get back in.
To the best of my knowledge, this problem started with the new update to Ver. 3.6.9. I am running Windows XP Media Center 2005

  • Solaris 10 - system hung, and now will not boot

I have a SunFire V240 with 2 73 SCSI disks running Solaris 10. Only the first disk has been formatted. The box was newly installed last week.
It had 2 zones set up on it and one of them was running a service out of it (called knowledgetree). I came in this morning (monday), and although I could ping the main server and the zone, I could not ssh to the box. I hooked up a console cable to the box, and there was nothing.
I then went to the OK prompt and typed boot.
    It said
    1} ok boot disk2
Boot device: /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2/disk@0,0:a File and args:
    Can't open boot device
    {1} ok
    I then typed
    {1} ok setenv auto-boot? false
    auto-boot? = false
    {1} ok reset-all
    followed by
    {1}ok probe-scsi
    Target 1
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST373207LSUN72G 045A
If I type the following I get the results below.
    {1} ok show-disks
    a) /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2,1/disk
    b) /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2/disk
    c) /pci@1e,600000/ide@d/cdrom
    d) /pci@1e,600000/ide@d/disk
    q) NO SELECTION
Enter Selection, q to quit: a
    /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2,1/disk has been selected.
Type ^Y ( Control-Y ) to insert it in the command line.
    e.g. ok nvalias mydev ^Y
for creating devalias mydev for /pci@1c,600000/scsi@2,1/disk
Does anyone have any ideas on what happened, or what I have to do to get the OS to boot again. I am a bit of a nubie when it comes to Solaris .... I am not sure what happened, or why all of the sudden the server will not boot.
    Thanks for the help
    Peter

Usually you can just do a "boot disk" or "boot disk1"
devalias will show you what actually devices the short alias map too.
It might be a faulty drive bay.
Try pulling it out of one and plugging it into another.
    The do the probe-scsi again.
Then put it back into the first to confirm....

  • Flash crashes all the time, firefox crashes too and then will not work period, or my computer will say it is open when it is not, and I cannot open it. When I get on firefox it will not load anything! Explorer still works but not firefox!

I keep getting the error message, problem loading page, even for firefox home! I need help, I hate explorer, I want my firefox back!

Certainly disable FlashPlayer in your plugins by using
    * Firefox Button -> Add-ons -> | Plug-ins
You need to get Firefox working again before you are going to be able to do anything with Firefox.
See if you can get Firefox to open in [[safe mode]] noting that when you get a window with a list of options just click on continue.
Also have a look at the articles
    * [[firefox hangs]]
    * [[firefox is already running but is not responding]]
    *[[managing the flash plugin]]
Sorry but at present there are many possible causes of your problem and you will need to try Firefox's SafeMode &/or some of the suggestions in those linked articles in order to narrow it down a bit.

  • Why does my mac book pro screen go black when it goes to sleep and then will not light up again unless I unplug the power cord

When I either leave my mac book pro open, but idle long enough for it to go to sleep or close the top and put it to sleep, the only way to light up the screen again is to diconnect the mag. connect power cord. Any ideas why and/or how to  correct this problem?

So this is what I got when I took my computer into the apple store to have it diagnosed.
After the apple technician performced several tests, the only thing that fixed the issue was an SMC reset. Based on this he figures it is probably a software or firmware issue that is going on. He is a little concerend how ever that the fans of the comupter don't reach maximal rpm when the computer is displaying the issue. So he recorded the problem, and told me to just perform the SMC reset as needed for the next couple months and wait for a new update from apple. If the issue persists I am to go back to the apple store and they will take the appropriate steps.
He said an SMC reset doesn't hurt the computer in any way, so its safe to do. I am gonna contact blizzard and let them know about the issue as well because if it is software, it could be their game (Diablo 3) that is causing the issue as well. If I hear of anything new i will let you know. So get on the blizzard form and let them know of the issue to fix the problem faster.

Do you have at least 4 GBs of RAM installed and at least 20 GBs of free space on your hard drive.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Use sc command to put Windows Module Installer to disabled in your script after Enabling Hyper-v Role. When the system completely restarts, change it to Manual or Automatic.
Note: I have not tested it, it is just my thought, if it does not work or something unexpected happens, it means your issue cannot be fixed this way.
