System Freezes, Program Crashes, LockUps on PowerMac G4 125 Dual Processor

I've been trying to track down a problem on my PowerMac G4. Cannot run 2 gigs of ram. Machine either will not boot, freezes, or programs crash. When I go down to 1-1/2 gigs, it works better, but still crashes and freezes (just not as much). Today I went down to 1 gig, and haven't had a problem all day. I've changed out the ram, thinking maybe one was bad. Made sure they were all exactly the same. Apple says it's my software. I've spent weeks contacting all my software manufacturers, they say it's my computer. Adobe says they've fixed all their software to work with more ram, but I do have plug-in applications that I use in Photoshop CS2 and AfterEffects 6.5. I'm fixing to buy a New G5 and would really like to go up to at least 4 gigs of ram. Anyone have a clue as to how to find out what's causing this problem without reinstalling all my software, one program at a time?

I've run Tech Tool Pro. I run a maintenance program every Monday morning because of the high volume of work on my computer; usually switching between Tech Tool one week and Disk Warrior the next. I'm still running with 2 512 dimms and everythings still working great. Not one crash or freeze. After lunch today I'm going to change out the ram and use the other two dimms. If they work, I'll try adding 3 or 4 back in. If I start crashing again, I guess I'm just stuck with 1 gig of ram. Have heard from other people having the same problem when they use programs which access a large amount of ram.

    Hi,
After installing X-Fi XtremeMusic to my system a problem appeared. As I noticed It appears mostly when I?m connected to the Internet and downloading something. The system freezes but this freezing is related to explorer.exe. The low panel with Start button freezes, connection to Internet finishes. If some other programs are working at that moment they function further but it is not possible to run new programs. So the system freezes or blue screen apears or computer restarts.
I tried to install the OS Windows XP Professional to a new disk dri've Seagate ST36082AS. After installing the OS, original drivers to my MSI mother board the computer was functioning well and downloading well too. Then I installed original driver for Sound Blaster X-Fi, DR release 2.7.3 and tried to start downloading. Soon the system freezed.
    Please offer a solution.

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite my system freezes and crashes and gets panic messages

My 2009 13 in Mac freezes, beeps, crashes about 10 minutes after it comes on since I upgraded to Yosemite.  Help please.

Good advice from Linc Davis that should sort out your query i think...
However you dont want to set your MBP to never go to sleep...
    Adjust reasonable sleep settings...
And the download an APP called caffiene...
When you click it you can have your MBP never go to sleep with a single click of your menu bar... and with another click it can go to sleep normally to maintain the laptop...
Simply click the cup... To toggle never sleep/sleep

  • System or program crashes when converting from NEF to DNG

    Hello Adobe.
First off, I love your software.
Second, this is my concern. You guys are pushing DNG as the go to raw format. That would be great if it worked good, but it doesn't.
First, when I convert from my Nikon NEF format (Nikon D7100) it chugs along just fine, then suddenly crashes either the program or my system after converting 50-100 or so images.
I have tried everything from downloading your software again, to turning off everything other then what is needed to do the conversion.
Of course I have the latest DNG utility/plug in/drivers from your website.
Second, the DNG images open much slower then my NEF images. Plus when I view them in Windoze file system view and want to see the photos in extra large icons, it renders the images very slowly.
My system is Windoze 8.1 updated always, Photoshop CC latest and greatest (I'm in the rental program), Bridge and Lightroom.
I have tried to use bridge and lightroom to do the conversion, even a separate utility and the crashing still happens. All these are up to date.
My system has an i7 Intel processor, 16 gb of Kingston ram, an ASUS P8Z77 MPRO mother board and a good stable power supply.
No other software crashes my system like converting from NEF to DNG.
What I do notice is my CPU fan goes into high RPM's and I am wondering if the CPU is overheating causing this.
If that is the case, then it would seem to me the conversion software is taxing the system far more then it should since my system is no slouch and while it isn't the latest and greatest, I would consider it to be in the top 20%,
it should be able to handle the conversion with no problem.
Are you aware of problems with the DNG software and or file format?
Is their any information I could forward to you to help solve the problem?

Photoshop Help | Digital Negative (DNG) - Adobe
    helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/digital-negative.html
DNG is a publicly available archival format for storing camera raw files. Adobe provides Adobe DNG Converter, a free utility that converts files from more than ...
That is off the net, therefore, Adobe looks at DNG as part of Adobe Photoshop, which it is if a person chooses to convert.
My issue has to do with it crashing, both my system and software.
I assume if people here are using it, then they can advise me if they are having similar problems.
I have also written Adobe directly several times over the last month and have yet to receive a response.
I apologize that I posted here, but since I consider DNG an integral part of Photoshop, then I think it is appropriate here.
I was also not aware of a DNG forum, if one exists.
    Thank you for your assistance.

  • Mac OS X system freeze and crash

I have a MacBook (est. 3 years old) with Mac OS X 10.6.8 installed.  Last night, my computer froze (the mouse wasn't functional, I couldn't use short keys, there was no spinning wheel, it was totally unresponsive).  I did a manual reboot by holding down the power key, it rebooted and everything seemed fine. Today, my computer crashed while I was editing a Word doc. It just shut off.  I thought maybe I hadn't noticed that the battery was dieing, so I plugged in the power cord when I rebooted but I still had 10% of my battery left which is usually good for another 30 minutes or so at least.  Any ideas how to discover the cause and fixes?

I ran the disk utility, repaired permissions, etc. and no errors/nothing fishy/etc. etc. came up.   About 157 GB left, and half of the used space is devoted to a partitioned Windows drive.  I don't have the install disk and I got a new battery about a year ago so it'll run for about 2.5-3 hours running MS office, Firefox, Email, and Itunes.  Hasn't let me down yet, but there's a first for everything.  Otherwise, besides the occasional software update, no other maintenance carried out recently.
I did a bit more research and wonder if maybe it could be an overheating problem...?  Both my computer and my power chord get scaldingly hot when they're plugged-in and using just the battery is minimally helpful in keeping it cool.  Back in the day, my old Toshiba acted like this when it overheated.  Reasonable possibility?  Possible fixes if so?

  • Saving or prewing calendars in iPhoto 9.1 causes program or system freeze

I really enjoyed the last iPhoto update which creates the possibility to make and order calendars among others. But it was a short time joy 'cause trying to preview the calendar (or to save as pdf) caused every time the program or even system freeze or crash.
Any solution or should we wait for another update to fix this problem?

at least you can get to that stage, I only get to creating one and it freezes or crashes.

  • System freezes/crashes

I've only had my new iMac for a couple of weeks but I have already experencied numerous kernal panics (which I think has been corrected by removing 3rd party memory) but also at least 6 system freezes/crashes.  There is no regularity to the problem.  I will simply go to use the machine any everything will be locked. The mouse will not more nor do the keys on the keyboard work.  My only option has been a hard restart.  I've spoken to tech support and gone to the apple store and am getting different answers to the possible problem.  Any ideas as to what might cause the system freeze?  I have since removed all usb devices (had an external hard drive and ipad connected) to see if this corrects the problem.  The Apple store told me the next option woudl be a complete software reinstall which I would prefer to avoid as I do not have access to install programs for a purchased version of office.

If you have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed, try installing the 10.6.8 combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 . Sometimes the operating system can develop some kinks, especially if Software Update has been used. Repair permissions first, apply the update, then repair permissions again. Then run Software Update to sweep up any other needed updates.  A combo update includes all prior updates for that version of the operating system.
If you have Lion, there isn't a combo update for it yet, as there is only one release at 10.7.1.  You can manually reapply that release from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1437

my itunes will not open at all. it occasionally will open but when i plug my iphone into it the program freezes and crashes. please help as soon as possible

i think i might have a solution... i have windows vista and after i installed to latest itunes update everytime i tried to open it it would freeze. I tried everything, including uninstalling itunes and all of its components and reinstalled it numerous times. So i went to the itunes folder in my folders, not on itunes, and i deleted my itunes library and playlists. After that it worked just fine, all of my music was deleted but luckily i had my files saved elsewhere.
I hope this helped! I know its frustrating and APPLE/ITUNES NEED TO FIX THE PROBLEM!!!!

Error message: "Warning: unresponsive script". Afterward, the system freezes and will then crash. Crash reports have been submitted many, many times without response. I have tried the fore-mentioned solutions with either no results or very bad results which I filed a report but did not receive an answer. The application to block scripts actually worsened the problem and I could not correct the situation for a while (no response from Firefox, at all). I have also been through this procedure without any one contacting me, AT ALL.

There does appear to be any support whatsoever from mighty "non caring" FIREFOX & people are getting fed up. We may as well try another system, if they can't be bothered to provide any support for their system, we can't be bothered to use their system.

  • Solved\ Random lockups/system freezes AMD 6850 crossfire mode

    Hello all,
I have come to these forums because i have a problem for 4 months now and i cant seem to figure out.
    First my systemspecs:
Asrock X79 extreme 4 slot 2011 (Bios version 2.0 (latest))
    Intel i7 3820
    16 Gig Geil 1600 DDR 3 memory (4 dimms)
2 x MSI R6850 Cyclone Power Edition/OC (crossfire mode with bridge)
    1 x OCZ agility 3 SATA III 2.5" SSD 120GB (System drive)
    2 x Samsung HDD 500GB 7200rpm
    TG600-BZ 600 Watt maxx 24 amps
    Running Windows 7 64bit
    Catalyst 12.6
    12.7 CAP1
    So my problem:
When i have 2 cards inserted in crossfire mode my system goes true random lock ups and freezes. Up to several times a day.
While heavy load and gaming i sometime hear the system hang for a few seconds (sounds hangs system freezez) and then it continues to run.. usually that happens about 5-6 times before the system hangs locks up and does not respond anymore.. (i can hear the sounds hanging) and have to do a reset.
I had a few BSOD's getting the well know ATIKMPAG.sys error but that happen only twice.
Funny thing is that it does not always does this while under heavy load but also while doing YouTube video's.. even had one while cooking dinner.. (computer not in use).
    Seems to be completely random.
So what have i done to fix the problem:
I have done a complete clean install of windows 7 only running basic drivers and hardware.. problem persists
Check system event log on any problems but since it does sudden lockups there are no logs of these hardware events.
Did a check on my power saving options in windows.. made sure all were on performance.
I have run true Catalyst 12.1 to 12.6 and all kinds of cap's.. problem persists
Checked temp, does not come above 70 degrees Celsius.  (case temp not above 30)
Made sure i run the latest BIOS version of my motherboard.
Run a 24 hours memory test with memtest86+ no errors.
Did a heavy load and MSI burn in test on the single cards separately from each other continues to run perfectly.
I have run both cards separately from each other in my system (single card mode) for 2 weeks...(both PCIE slots) system runs like a charm.. no lockups no random freezes.
So i hope anyone can help me, i have some experience troubleshooting computer problems but this one has me baffled.

This is indeed the Tagan piperock 600 watt. Problem is that i have no idea how much amp my cards are pulling from 1 rail.. are they trying to pull it all from 1 rail? or are they getting power from 2 different rails. If my crossfire setup is pulling al his power from 1 rail i still have a problem..
Also i read in the review (my german is rusty but ok, tnx xmad) that when turbo mode is enabled that all rails work as one rail.. so 80 amp is available? Is this even possibly?
My new PSU will arrive today so i will report tomorrow if it has solved the issue or not.
No, as noted in my last reply for your PSU: "48A combined total for +12V rails". Max for any individual 12V rail is 20A. If three of the rails are loaded to total of 48A then the 4th is useless. You can't just add up 20+20+20+20 & come up with 80, it doesn't work that way on PSU although Antec seems to think so.

  • Satellite Pro M10 freeze and crash with some programs

    Hi
    I have a Satellite Pro M10...
a few weeks ago it's freeze and crash with some programs like wmpayer, messenger... I delivered it in the authorized agent and they had not detected no problem.
Already I formatted it some times, but the problem continues.
Some ideia of what it can be?
    Thanks

    Hello,
Sounds to me like you could have a Motherboard problem. Formatting it takes away the chances of it being a software issue. Try taking out 1 stick of ram and testing it with that. If it continues to crash, take out that stick and try the other one. If it does it with both RAM then those are ok. HDD is not the culprit, so now it could either be processor or MB. Find a program to measure the heat of the notebook and run some heavy programs to make it overheat. If the temperature goes up and then it crashes, it could just be overheating. If it continues without overheating you either have a problematic CPU or MB. Hope this helps.

  • Organizer in elements 3 freezes program/system

Problem: Program/System freezes up after I select the organizer (or My Catalog, or the photo browser) from the start-up menu. Only a fraction of the organizer page loads onto the monitor before it freezes. To unlock I close the program which doesnt respond until I click END NOW and wait about 10 seconds.
    My system:
    AMD Athlon 3200+
    XP Home sp2
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0
    Ram: 1024
Free Disk Space 118.71 GB (160 GB total)
    Video Card: Radeon 9600
Virus/Spyware: Spy Sweeper, AVG Free and Ad-Aware
Narrative: I have been using Photoshop Elements 3 since it first became available and have enjoyed it immensely over the years. This problem began overnight and without warning. Fortunately I backed up all my photos on three DVDs a few weeks ago. I have tried everything, I think & am considering re-loading XP and wiping my hard drive clean to solve this but I would much rather find a solution here than go through all that. I have tried the Elements 3.0.1 update and another solution posted for PE5 which instructed to deselect Adobe Active File Monitor on the services tb in msconfig, to no avail.

    Bob,
I'm still in a state of disbelief so after finishing my work tonight I couldn't help click on PE3 just to confirm it was still there and working - it was!
Yes, I know the format of the hard drive thing would have worked but it would have caused too much inconvenience and taken so much time. ARGH! And of course as you said, I would have never known why. Well, I guess ignorance is bliss because I sure don't know how a lot of things work on computers so I'm a pretty happy camper just to be able to do as much as I do.
Besides an earlier Microsoft XP update which disallowed me from using the send command from the organizer (to e-mail a photo to someone) and which Microsoft later came out with a fix for, the only on-going glitch I have encountered with PE3 is that after I have edited and saved a photo in the organizer/catalog/photo browser, it used to send me back to that particular photo's location in the organizer. Now after I have completed an edit it sends me back to the most recent photo in the editor, which is only an inconvenience when working with older photos therefore causing me to find my place back in the organizer after each edit before I can resume. BTW, I backed up my organizer again last night just to be on the safe side.
When you say, "Be sure to make a copy when you have everything set up the way you like it" do you mean to copy the PE3 folder from the set-up disk? Sorry, I'm geting brain dead this time of night. Spent most of it downloading XP Service Pack 3.

You can get a first-gen Mac Pro on eBay for around $300. It can run OS 10.4 through 10.7. Something to consider, depending on the cost of a logic board and the hassle of replacing it. You transfer your existing drives, as long as you have a spare external drive. You would clone your G5 drives to the external drive as disk images, then move the G5 drives to the Mac Pro, re-format them GUID, and clone back the contents from the disk images on the external. I did this recently when I retired my G5.

If you have the Neo2 then I assume it is AGP 8x ?  If so then your 6600GT must have a power connector for a 4 pin molex on the end (only the PCI-e cards do not have an extra power connector).  You need to plug in a lead from your PSU (same type as the hard drives / optical drive - 4 pin but try to use one on a separate line if possible) - these cards need more power than the AGP slot can provide.
