System froze when I plugged in ethernet cable, was this the cause?
I had wifi on when using the net, and then I plugged the ethernet adaptor into the thunderbolt port and plugged the ethernet cable into the adaptor, the system froze, the mouse or pad wouldnt work, so I forced shutdown,
was plugging in ethernet the cause of the system freeze? Should I have turned off wifi prior to plugging in ethernet?
Or should I not plug in ethernet while the laptop is on?
System.log -- I'm using Lion, not Mountain Lion, but for me, one opens the Console application (in the Utilities folder) and look along the left side panel for system.log.
Also in the Console application you can look at DIagnostic and Usage Messages and also at All Messages. You'll be looking for something that sounds like a problem at the exact time that your freeze occured.
I've been doing this "hot plugging and unplugging" of the ethernet cables for years with several Mac laptops going through 10.6 and 10.7 (probably have done this a few thousand times) and have never actually experienced any issues while doing it. The area where I have seen some issues is with the laptops sleeping and not waking up properly, once in a while this has happened, but that's not related to what you had happen. Again, I was using 10.6 and am now on Lion (10.7) [employer hasn't upgraded us all to Mountain Lion, although that will happen shortly], so 10.8 might be a little different.

Problem with earphone when plug in Ethernet cable!!!
Hi guys, I bought the macbook pro 15 couple days ago. And I realize that whenever I use my Ethernet cable, my earphone has strange sound, so I unplug the earphone and plug it back, it's ok, but after few minutes (when I play a song) I hear that sound again. It doesn't happen when I use wifi (ethernet cable isn't plug in) and I also check it with another earphones but it's just like the first one . I just wonder if anyone have the same problem? I do not understand. Without third-part programs, the iPod will show up as a camera for get photos and videos off the iPod and it will show in iTunes for file transfer/syncing.
For photos/videos, the iPod shows up in My Computer and you see the photos/videos in the DCIM folder -

My time capsule seemed to have given up so I have just got a net gear router, I have no problem connecting wirelessly but when I connect an Ethernet cable it says it's connected but pages will not load
Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility. -
I have purchased new iphone 3gs, its usb cable and charger not working.When I plugged in usb cable to my laptop it says"usb power hub exceeded". When I use another cable I have, it works fine.But the original one not working.Any help?

I have a Macbook Pro (2013) OS 10.8.1. Moved into a university house and need to use ethernet cable. Bought the Thunderbold connection but when I try to use the ethernet with it a webpage comes up saying Wireless Setup and Router Setup? I have previously used ethernets in similar situations and never had to input information like this?
I have tried to turn of the wi-fi but that doesn't work either. I think it could be a something to do with the internet provider because virginmedia comes up on the webpage. This is what comes up:

Running the bonjour wizard, I get an alert saying 'I don't have sufficient access to my computer to connect to the selected printer'.
The printer has 'sharing' turned on from the Mac end; this works with a Powerbook via the wireless connection. Sharing is also turned on in the Windows printer control panel for this printer (under properties). The Mac is a G5 running 10.5.8. When I try to print a page from the Windows machine it gets hung in the print queue.
Any advice how to proceed would be appreciated!

my memory card is not showing up on the home screen when i plug it in but it shows the computer found it in system preferences. when i plugged these into a imac back in school it showed up how come its not showing up on my less then 24hr old mac. sorry beginner mac user
Finder > Finder Menu > Finder Preferences (these are not in System Preferences)
The General pane has checkboxes for various devices to show on the Desktop. A memory card is considered an external drive. If you want to see it on the Desktop when it mounts, check the external drives checkbox. -
Help! I'm in UK and need to recharge but when I plug in (using a power converter) the square white unit is buzzing - what does it mean? I am using a power adaptor that works for other items - shaver, phone etc. and they don't buzz - it's coming from the square white unit before it's connected to the computer so I don't want to then connect my mac incase it means there's something wrong. If you're using a converter that changes the voltage from the UK ~230V to say 120V, rather than just a converter to different outlet/plug/socket sizes - then that's likely the problem.
All the Apple power units I've seen are rated from 100V to 240V & do not require any sort of voltage converter, just something to let you plug it into a UK outlet (or an Apple cable/connector set). Many cheap voltage converters can cause buzzing as you've described.
Many supermarkets & hardware/general stores will sell the right 'adaptor' for a couple of £UK - I'd find one rather than continue with the buzzing. -

I'm having trouble with my macbook pro, I have only had it for three months, when I plugged a camera sd card into the sd slot it isn't appearing anywhere on the computer and i can not access my photographs. can somebody please help me?

Hi Shootist. I would be interested in hearing some reasoning on this. I almost always use a USB cable to connect my camera to the MBP for transferring pictures, and have moved about 30,000 this way over the last 6 years since my photography went digital. Recently, on the rare occassions when I have only a few to transfer and I was too lazy to go for the cable, I have used the card reader; about half those times I have difficulty getting the MBP to recognise the card. I find I have to press the card very hard into the slot for it to be recognised.
My rationale is quite possibly wrong, but I feel that the USB connectors are more robust and hard-wearing than the flimsy connectors on an SD card. Also, I haven't measured it, but I think the data transfer is faster with the cable. (I just came across this test, which reports noticeably faster transfer for cable than built-in card reader, but the computer was a PC)

Time capsule not found by airport but ethernet cable was working
So I turned time machine off some time ago,( got fed up with it constantly saving whilst recording music and slowing down stuff), now although i was happy (ish) as it was before, i can no longer find in preferences a drive to use as backup.
the alert box tells me that airport cannot locate, when i previously, and still do, have ethernet cabling connected .
The time capsule green light shows, but not backing up.
Can i find back up drives without airport utility being used?Thanks for th response, i have upgraded to lion some time back and as i recall i've had this prob before and had to do a verification of some kind using the clean up disc utility.

the verification again without success, I did a repair disc permission on the Mac HDD,i did a restart of TC by unplugging and replugging without success.
I use TC for backup only, using ethernet and my router is wireless.
i'm reluctant to reset although I would if I could be sure.
What is the 5.6 utility?
My version 11.5.2, should i install the 5.6? if this is indeed an upgrade?

Net connection trouble: "No Ethernet cable connected or the device is not responding"

I have been plagued by a dropping Net connection for a couple of months, and as it has been getting worse lately I have tried to sort out the problem.
I have simplyfied my connection between the computers and the VSDL fiber modem by bypassing my AirPort Express and Ethernet hub and connecting the three computers directly to the built in ports on the modem.
Since I did that a new error message has started appearing on my Mac Mini, saying that I have no Ethernet cable connected to the modem, or the device is not responding. At the moment I have two of the machines connected, and the Mac Book Air seems to work without problems. There are lights on the Ethernet ports on the modem, and they are lighting up for the iBook even when the Mac Mini connection drops. When the Mac Mini connection drops the lights go off on its Ethernet port on the modem.
This seems to point to some sort of trouble with the Mac Mini. Is there a way to monitor what's going on? Can I use Terminal, for instace? It can't be the settings, and it cant' be the cable, so it must be related to the hardware I suppose. I am using DHCP to connect to the modem.
The connection drops arbitrarily, sometimes for long periods of time, and then comes back up again by itself.
Any ideas for trouble shooting etc?

Thanks again. Unfortunately, the problems are back again. Had a stable connection and connected the AirPort again. Everything was working fine. Then all of a sudden the connection dropped again today.h
Connected a LAN cable directly to my MacBook Air and got the connection to work immediately.
Took that cable and connected to my MacMini, again, connection came back immediately.
The AirPort (in Brigde Mode) is also connected, but gives me a blinking orange light, and the same "no cable or (modem) is not responding" message again.
I guess this must rule out hardware problems in the computers.
Ligth for the LAN cable port on the modem connected to AirPort is dead. Moved the cable to another port, light still dead.
Shut down AirPort Express, still same orange blinking light when I switched it on.
I now suspect there is something going on with the AirPort Express. Just bought it, and I had the same problem with it's predecessor, but...
Is there any way to trouble shoot the AirPort Express?
I can connect to it Wirelessly, But AirPort Utility says it has been removed from the Network. In the Network Preferences it says it has a self-assigned IP. For Network Settings I get green lights for everything except Network Settings, which gives me a yellow light. It also says the Internet connetcion is working correctly.
Indeed, when I made the direct Ethernet connection inactive I still get a working connection over WiFi, in spite of the blinking orange light on the AirPort and a yellow light for Network settings in Prefereces....
In the console things look normal:

My iPod Nano 7th Generation couldn't be detected by iTunes when I plugged in. I tried resolving the issue by uninstalling the iTunes and then install it back again but yet still the same problem exist. Can you please help me to solve this issue?
