System frozen solid when copying files across HDDs

I have got a very odd problem. When I copy files from one HDD to another (both are Western Digital 80GB ones) on the same IDE channel, the system just freezes solid. Warm boot doesn't work, only the reset button does. I updated the BIOS to the newest version (1.5), didn't help. The IDE driver is the newest nVidia one. I even ran Memtest86 on my memory, it's fine. The CPU temperature was hovering around 40C, so that can't be caused by overheating. I am stumped, what can it be?
The files I have been trying to copy came from an older machine. They are in a folder and are around 5G in size total. For what its worth, the other HDD also has a copy of Windows XP Professional on it.
Please help.

Hi Omega Blue.
Tip from fafner is very important, make sure the jumpers are set properly and not set to cable select and...If advice from fafner does not work...
Check with another IDE cable and if this do not fix the issue...
Please do not install nVidia SW IDE drivers if you have problems. I think the nVidia drivers are still a few unstable at this moment. Remove nVidia drivers for your IDE controller and install IDE Windows XP standard ones instead. Left untouched the SATA drivers and RAID drivers. You can do this from Device Manager->IDE Controller->Properties->Update Driver (And select the IDE Windows XP ones).
I think doing the last one will fix your problems. ( if those are not related to hardware, of course ).
Good luck and like fafner said, Welcome here.

  • External Hard drive getting errors when copying files?

    When I'm copying files to my hard drive I keep getting errors that the file is in use.  It was originally stopping at around the 167.8MB mark everytime when I try copying files over and giving me that error.  As this is a 1TB HDD I have no way of backing it up until I get to the US (currently studying in Australia).  So just wondering if anyone had ideas.
    Things I've done:
    - Tried using HDD over Firewire/USB and with other Macs still same errors
    - Tried Disk Utility and sometimes it I get no errors with the disk when I do Repair/Verify Disk or I get an error where the disk can't be unmounted
         - I get that error of unmounting when I normally unmount them and I have to unplug the HDD for it to be readable again.
    - I try copying files from it or to it, and sometimes files copy to my Computer entirely even 2GB ones, but other times it stops at random intervals, and it always   stops when copying files to the HDD that never works, usually stops at random times.  :\
    Any suggestions, help, or programs I can use for HDD repair would be great!
    Thanks a lot,

    Wondering if I could bump this up a bit, still having problems with it.

  • Portege M400: cannot copy files on HDD - cannot see any of my files in Word

    I purchased the M400 a few weeks ago. There are a number of problems. Adobe reader gives "an internal error occurred", installing manual from download gives "error has occurred in zip file", downloading or copying files to hdd gives error "there is no space" when only 8 gig used from 60GB. Now I cannot see any of my files in Word.
    I cannot also copy files from cd or dvds. I am in canada mississauga on hols, normally reside in the UK so I am in a precarious situation because I cannot get into my desktop to sort matters out.
    Can someone please advise me why all these problems are occurring, do I have to use the recovery disk? baz

    Thank you Eldorado for your clear advice. As I said I am on hols here and have left my USB external drive at home so it??s impossible to do what you say. Before I embark on your 2nd instruction I would like to say that the warning from the recovery disk is so frightening. It says if the HDD is reformatted I will lose everything including any additional\ software installed which to me means such additional software will not be made good.
    But your advice seems quite good because you say everything will be reinstalled when the OS is reinstalled. Can I have your assurance that I go ahead as you say?
    Thank you. Baz

    Hi Sandeep
    Standard R/3 does not allow backflush without any operation. You need to have an operation to do a backflush.Error message CR 085 is issued because there is no operation in the routing of the material backflushed. System should issue an error when no operations are found in routing. Although, error message CR 085 is not correct, more appropriate message RM 824 for this a program correction is requried check note (691161).

  • Error when copying files from SSD to HD

    Build 9926 (clean install  not upgrade)
    When copying file (drag & drop) from either an SSD>> HD or HD>>SSD I get the below error.  This is definetly build specific and not hardware related.  I have re-installed 9926 from an MSDN ISO 3x with the same results.
    Both drives are local.  Both drives have been checked and are ok.
    Any ideas?

  • Error when copying files to NAS

    Since upgrading to Mavericks, I frequently get errors in the Finder when copying files to my NAS.
    This never happened under Mountain Lion. The error says "The operation can’t be completed because the item “filename” is in use."
    Most of the time, it does copy over after several attempts. I'd like to know if there is a fix for this, or an update in the works.
    I'm currently on 10.9.
    Thanks!

    ...Just FYI my problem occured even though I had updated to 10.9.2.
    Through trial and error I eventually got my files copied. I detailed what I ended up doing in my post which I referred to above: ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5944278 )

  • Lion: What happened to "Dont Replace" when copying files?

    Lion: What happened to "Dont Replace" when copying files?
    That is such a MANDATORY option when copying files.
    Ex: I want to copy my TV shows to a directory. Half of the TV shows are already in that directory. If I select REPLACE, then I have to WAIT for the duplicate files to overwrite. If I select KEEP BOTH, I end up with copies and it takes the same amount of time.
    What gives?

    Apple removed it and the users here can't tell you why. Your best option is to send Apple feedback.

  • How to display the file name & status when copying files.

    I write a program to backup/copy data from one directory to other directory, and I'm using File List and Runtime.getRuntime().exec("xcopy "+dir1+"\\"+name+" "+dir2+" /y");
    to copy the files, so it will copy the file one by one, and everytime one file is copied, I want to display the result to the screen, but guess what has happened, the screen just display a blank screen, and wait until all the copying processes finish, then it will display all files that has been copied.

    How can I pass a string to the command line(DOS) ? Also i want to capture the output given by the command line in a string.
    Answer: Try this out:
    // works for DOS
    String cmds[] = new String[2];
    cmds[0] = "dir"; // replace with "ls" on UNIX
    cmds[1] = "c:"; // replace with "/" on UNIX
    // execute the command
    Process pro = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmds);
    // wait until it's done executing
    pro.waitFor();
    // what did the process output from the Input pipe back to
    // this process (okay, who named this stuff)?
    InputStream out = pro.getInputStream();
    // output it (really slowly)
    int i;
    while ((i = out.read()) != -1) System.out.println((char) i);==============
    Although I don't think this example will do exactly what you want... you might have to delete the waitFor() call and just check to see when there's nothing else to read from the InputStream. It's a start, though, and the web page has a lot of similar examples of this sort of thing.

  • Error-36 and Error-42 when copying files from SD card

    Hello!
    I recently switched from a PC user to a mac user! Everything is great, but ever since I got the computer (refurbished 15in macbook pro) ive had problems with copying files from my SD card to my computer!! It so frustrating! Ive tried everything! I even called apple support, and after 30 minutes of calling came to no solution! I keep getting error-36 error-43 and sometimes error-8058 !!! I tried formatting with no success, because my computer cant read the disk! It is a PNY professtional 32gb sd card. Im not sure if this problem is happening due to the fact that I previousley used this same SD on my PC, but im going to return this computer if it doesnt fix! Ive also tried doing to terminal commands but it doesn't work! Please help!!
    - from a distressed youtuber

    I'm having similar problems and I'm using a 1Tb HDD ( USB connection) which has 3 partitions. I have discovered that after some time (not clear what triggers it) I start being unable to use one partition for backups. When I checked further I discovered that I cannot write any file no matter what size to it. The problem has normally disappeared for a while when I restart my computer. I've done disk verifies and things are fine. The other two partitions are Ok ... I use one for TimeMachine and the other for SuperDuper. This partition is primarily used for ChronoSync backups so I suspect that the problem is related to how ChronoSync backs up but I have yet to convince their tech support of that.

  • Error code 36 when copying files to external hard drive!

    I keep getting this error when I try to copy files to my external hard drives. It is the same error no matter what drive I use. It says it cannot perform the operation because the data cannot be written - like there is a permissions problem, but I checked all the files, and there is no permission problems. The file sizes are small .iff and .jpg --- There is not more than 10 characters in the naming, so what is going on? I have folders inside of folders, and it will not copy - but if I go into the folders and copy each file one at a time, by itself, it works. I don't get it? Anybody have any thoughts?

  • Permissions problem when copying files from external hard drive

    Hi.
    I have recently reinstalled leopard (wiped the hard drive clean) on my macbook pro. (10.5.4). I had used Time Machine so I have a complete backup. But I only wanted a few of the files so I didn't do a backup restore. I went into the file directory of the backup on my external hard drive and dragged the folders I wanted back over to my laptop.
    But I'm in permissions **** though! When I want to copy them over I get an alert saying you may not have privilege to do this and asks for my password. I enter my password and it copies fine. But every time I want to do anything with those files (like move them, or delete them) I have to re enter a password.
    So, inside of the terminal I do a "ls -al" command to see whats going on and find that everything is the same as a natively created folder except for a '@' on the permissions column. I do a "ls -al@' to see more details and I get this:
    drwxr-xr-x@ 6 xenition staff 204 Jul 20 17:08 Assets
    com.apple.metadata:_kTimeMachineNewestSnapshot 50
    com.apple.metadata:_kTimeMachineOldestSnapshot 50
    I did run repair permissions from Disk Utility and it didn't solve it. How can I resolve the permissions on these files?

    run ls -aleO on the copied files and see if there are any ACLs or flags.
    BTW, another (and possibly better) way to restore files from an old TM drive is via TM interface. control-click on TM in the dock and choose "browse other TM disks" select a disk to browse and go at it. when you try to restore something you'll be prompted for a location to restore it to and maybe a password.

  • Error when copying files using WebDav web folder

    When copying a large group of files/folder to a 10gAS portal page we are randomly seeing the error: "An error occurred while copying some or all of the selected files" in Windows Explorer. Clicking "ok" will resume the file copy process.
    The only error I see in the Apache log is:
    [Mon Aug  2 18:00:06 2004] [error] OraDAV: Apache/OCI Error -9999/0: ORADAV: LOB was closed with active write operation
    Any suggestions? I couldn't find anything on metalink, though i have logged an iTAR as well.

    My AirPort Extreme card was replaced on my MacBook by Apple. Prior to this, I was getting odd errors like the one outlined above. I do not receive this issue anymore, and I think I can attribute it to the hardware issue with the card.

  • Error code -36 when copying files to certain drives

    I want to back up my Aperture Library. I have two external fire wire drives that give me this error:
    The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in Aperture Library could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
    I don't get the error when copying to my Drobo, so I believe this problem is only related to my two fire wire drives. I reformatted one of them using Disk Utility, same problem.

    Today I had the same thing happen. I was copying some large (2gb+) video files from a USB2 FAT32 external drive to my other Mac formatted external drives, first time to a firewire 400 and then tried to a USB2. At about 750mb, the transfer stopped and the EXACT same dialog box appeared.
    I ran Disk Utility on the source drive USB2 FAT32 to fix drive errors. No improvement.
    As I've had issues under SL with my optical FW DVD drives (see that thread for details), I thought may be my FW drives don't like FAT32. So I tried the Mac USB2 drive. Not working either.
    Finally, I realized I was routing the FAT32 drive into a cheap unpowered 4 port USB hub (Genesys Logic, Inc. chipset). So I unplugged the hub from the Mac Mini and inserted the FAT32 drive directly into the Mac Mini. Tada! Success was at hand. No problems transferring to either FW or USB drives.
    So this tells me there is something flaky about some devices and how they are hooked up. That is the drives and files are OK. It is Snow Leopard that has the bug.
    Mike, if you are still having problems and are comfortable using Unix CL, you may be able to use the DD command (so called "Data Dump") to transfer. This is a very robust method to transfer files and permits resumption if a transfer has died midstream. It can even transfer real corrupt files off of damaged disk drives regardless of drive format. I used DD successfully to move files off an eMac that had random hardware crashes (due to faulty counterfeit capacitors) that were interrupting the transfer.
